In this Kinda Murdery Classic the discovery of the child's body, lying frozen in a cornfield, on Christmas Eve, in Chester, Nebraska, turned a the solitary hunter from a mere witness to an urgent harbinger of a dark mystery that needed unraveling. His pulse quickening, he retraced his steps out of the cornfield, each footfall a heavy note in the otherwise silent expanse. He sought help with the weight of his grim find pressing down upon him, a burden he could not bear alone. The police officers, upon their prompt arrival, plunged into the investigative fray, their professional detachment strained by the young age of the victim. They were driven by the conviction that somewhere, perhaps within the quiet homes dotted across the sleepy town or beyond its borders, there was a void where this child once existed—a family missing their little one. Someone must be missing, "Little Boy Blue." Kim Kavin is an award-winning freelance writer who is also passionate about better understanding where dogs come from in the United States. Her book, The Dog Merchants, is a fascinating read for anyone who wants a look at places few of us are able to go, such as a dog auction or a high volume kennel-based breeding operation. Kim and I talked about the ins and outs of the complex industry that has grown up around puppy production, including large scale breeding and rescue operations. In this interview, the two of us are describing a system that is absolutely sub-optimal with regard to canine welfare. While we did discuss how some parts of the system may not be as abhorrent as they've been described elsewhere, I want to be clear that one of the goals of the Functional Dog Collaborative is to make change in exactly this area. So please do not confuse our descriptions of what is existing for our approval of it. You can find Kim at kimkavin.com. In addition to her book The Dog Merchants, you may also enjoy checking out her book Little Boy Blue (also discussed briefly in this interview).
It was a mission which started just like any other: but it ended when the B-17 Flying Fortress "Little Boy Blue" crashed into a farmer's field in Suffolk, England.Eight of the ten air crew were killed that day – and 80 years on, we join their families in that very same field to honour their memory. We speak to Brian Cracknell – one of the last remaining eye-witnesses of the Little Boy Blue air crash just outside the village of Thurston, near Bury St Edmunds. We're also joined by archaeologists who have been excavating the crash site and local farmer Stephen Honeywood to unveil a memorial to those who served. Please like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.Visit the Mighty Eighth Podcast website: mighty8thpodcast.comTo contact Johann and Mike, email johann@ruralcity.co.ukFollow the Mighty Eighth Podcast on X - @mighty8thpodFollow the Mighty Eighth Podcast on Facebook - @mighty8thpodFollow the Mighty Eighth Podcast on Instagram - @mighty8thpodFollow Mike on X - @mikehistorianFollow Johann on X - @johanntasker Hosted on Acast. When Ida Stutzman perished in a barn fire on a warm summer night in 1977, her husband Eli's side of the story didn't add up from the start. But the Stutzmans were part of the Amish community. The very nature of their insular world meant the suspicious nature of Ida's death went unspoken for many years. They rarely talk to outsiders, which is why author Greg Olsen had his work cut out for him when penning his latest book The Amish Wife. But slowly, with the help of his researcher Robin Lassen, a story of cover-up, lies and an investigation that never stood a chance started to reveal itself. Bill Rosamond of San Antonio and Walter Jarutowicz of Sutherland Springs visit June 1 in the air-conditioned comfort of the Sutherland Springs Historical Museum. As they were introduced by museum docent Tambria Read, Jarutowicz recalled working with someone named Rosamond at Kelly Field in San Antonio in the 1960s. Turns out, it was Bill! The two reminisced about working together, and about Bill's early “fame” as nursery rhyme character “Little Boy Blue,” leading the first-ever Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee Parade in 1937. Look for Bill again in this year's parade, set for Saturday, June 22 — but not as “Little Boy...Article Link

In his 1990 true crime classic, Abandoned Prayers, Olsen delivered “a riveting and deeply disturbing chronicle” (Cleveland Plain Dealer) of “Little Boy Blue”—nine-year-old Danny, found dead in a Nebraska cornfield, whose errant father, former Amish man Eli Stutzman, had a racked up a wild history of sexual profligacy, pornography, and drugs. Years before, Stutzman's pregnant wife, Ida, had died under bizarre and suspicious circumstances. Yet Eli, shrouded by the encircling privacy of the Amish and small-town law enforcement negligence, was never charged, or even an official suspect in her death.Gregg Olsen has long been haunted by Ida Stutzman's shady death and the role Eli must have played in it. In THE AMISH WIFE: Unraveling the Lies, Secrets, and Conspiracy That Let a Killer Go Free (Thomas and Mercer; January 1, 2024), Olsen returns to the Ohio Amish community where the young woman perished in a barn fire, her death deemed “natural causes.” Eli would sell up and leave town soon after, launched on the sexual odyssey that would eventually lead to Danny's death, as well as Eli's conviction for his roommate's murder.Determined to discover the truth and seek justice for Ida—and urged on by Ida's brother—Olsen reopens the door into Eli Stutzman's dark life of debauchery and deception. He revisits many of the witnesses that he first met and interviewed when researching Abandoned Prayers, as well as numerous new voices, discovering many facts and suspicions long held secret by the pious, closed-mouth Amish community. Olson tracks down Ida and Eli's relatives and friends, as well as Eli's lovers and sex partners. He finds that many in this world where families and associations are inextricably intertwined have quietly believed that Eli killed Ida, yet few are willing to publicly judge.Returning to the investigation around Ida's death, Olsen pokes holes in the medical postmortem. Perhaps most significantly, he delves into the questionable work of Sheriff Jim Frost, a charismatic, opportunistic lawman who lived a closeted homosexual life and may have, for a time, been Eli Stutzman's lover. How much did Jim Frost cover up, either intentionally or subconsciously, to shield the truth about Eli and their shared sexuality at a time when small town life for gay men was confining and even dangerous? How complicit does that make Frost in the numerous deaths Eli left in his wake? Did the conspiracy of silence among the members of the Amish community indirectly allow Ida's and the other deaths to occur?Leaving no stone unturned and unfolding with one chilling revelation after another, THE AMISH WIFE is vintage reportage from the writer New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother calls, “one of today's true-crime masters."

In this episode, Savannah finds out minutes before recording the podcast episode that their father is terminally ill in the hospital without any chance to recover. What bubbles up to the surface is a frank conversation with Julie about Savannah's childhood as the little boy his parents' assumed them to be, how Savannah dealt with their upbringing, the things they felt they missed out on, their ongoing twenty-something anger against their father, and the thirty-something forgiveness finally released from Savannah's heart for the man who has just done the best he knew how to do. Savannah now will never have a chance to tell their father about all that his child has accomplished... but maybe that is good enough. ----- SAVANNAH HAUK is the author of “Living with Crossdressing: Defining a New Normal” and “Living with Crossdressing: Discovering your True Identity“. Kim Kavin began her journalism career at a newspaper nearly 25 years ago. While many local newspapers have either been bought out, consolidated or shut-down, Kim Kavin made a move to yachting journalism before many of those changes began to proliferate. Her initial move to yachting was well, to Yachting Magazine.Kim walks us through those early days, explaining how she wound up at Yachting and the many other publications with which she's played a major role. Those other publications include: Soundings, Passagemaker, Cruising World, Soundings Trade Only, Yachts International, and Boatsetter. Part of that discussion includes how she successfully navigated a world occupied predominately by men.Kim introduces me to the practice of “enthusiast oriented journalism”. Unlike in the world of Woodward & Bernstein, the approach to covering a story about a yacht or charter is a different, yet valued pursuit. There exists a delicate dance between the yachting businesses and the journalists that cover them. She also walks us through some of the structural changes that have taken place at magazines, and how she now works as a freelance journalist and writer.Beyond Kim's work in the world of yachting journalism, she also has a love and passion for dogs that runs deep. That passion runs so deep, her curiosity about the history of her adopted dog led her on a personal journey to discover the origin of her beloved pet. This was documented in her book, Little Boy Blue, released in 2012. CNN did a story on the book that ultimately resulted in a kill shelter being closed down. Most of our talk is about boats, yachts and the behind the scenes of yachting journalism. The last 10 minutes or so are about our mutual love of dogs and her work in that field. You can learn more about Kim, her writing history, accolades and links to her writings and advocacy for freelancers at her web site: http://www.kimkavin.com/And next time you pick up a copy of Yachting, be sure to look for her name and you'll be able to put a voice to the words. In episode 168 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Sicarius McGrath. Sicarius McGrath is a former gang member and street-level arms dealer from Merseyside. He became involved in gangs when he was 15 years old and went to prison when he was 21 for the attempted murder of a man in Birkenhead. Whilst in prison, Sicarius watched an ITV drama series called ‘Little Boy Blue' which was based on the real life story of the murder of Rhys Jones, an 11-year-old boy who was caught in the crossfire of a gang-related shootout whilst going about his day. Sicarius marks this moment as the turning point for his life and when the penny dropped for him to want to turn his life around and stop young boys and men from going down the path he did. When he came out of prison, he started OCG Solutions UK, an organisation which runs youth rehabilitation programmes to tackle organised crime, young boys caught up in county line drug operations and the victims of grooming by older men into these gangs. In this episode we discuss his journey into criminality, prison, redemption and how he's turned his life around. Eli Stutzman era un Amish a cui andava stretta la sua comunità. Ha provato ad affrancarsi, ma la sua vita è scivolata in un gorgo da cui è difficile uscire e si è trascinato dietro un po' di persone, tra cui Danny suo figlio che ha sempre dichiarato: "Lo preferisco morto che Amish". Una sentenza che ha portato alla storia del Little Boy Blue. Libro Clara: https://www.edizioniunderground.it/no...
