That's a wrap for 2024. We hope you enjoyed the episodes as much as we enjoyed making them. We'll end the year on with a couple of beers from two of our favorite breweries. Martin brought 3 Fonteinen Prium Mirabelle blend no 25. This geuze has Mirabelle plums added and was added to Olorosso barrels. This is one of our favorite blends that 3F makes. Stefan brought Lervig Silent Exchange by Rackhourse. The Rackhouse series is an outstanding line from Lervig. They always bring a high level of quality and flavor. Silent Exchange is a collaboration with Pohjala. They take the imperial stout and blend Finnish rye, maple syrup and put it in bourbon barrels. Have a happy holidays every and we'll see you in 2025. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #geuze #lambic #imperialstout #barrelaged
Advent 2024 Day 02 is here and with it comes 3 Fonteinen Cuvee Armand and Gaston Vintage 2017. We getting fancy this episode and drink our beer with our pinkies out, and not because we have syphillis. We're fancy. It's got all the tart notes of green apple and citrus that we love from a 3F geuze. If can sustain this level of quality, this will really be a great calendar this year. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #adven2024 #adventcalendar #geuze
We don't normally go to the same place in the same year, let alone in the same summer. Something special happened and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to review a beer. 3 Fonteinen has decided to finally release their beers on tap. You know we love 3F beers and getting it by the glass is a huge bonus. Mikkeller Moriskan somehow got kegs. Might be the first in Sweden. Certainlly the first in the region. 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriekenlambik is full of sour cherries which gives it a tart cherry juice flavor. It's incredible. If you missed this and love gueuze, they have Oude Lambic 2019 on tap as well. We follow that up with Pomona Island Crimson & Clover 2023. This English barleywine was aged in an apricot brandy barrels. This is incredible and makes you wonder why more beers aren't aged on apricot brandy barrels. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #barleywine #kriek #gueze
We made it out to Metro in Malmö. They have an interesting tap list but where they excel is their bottle list. They have a wide selection of bottles and cans to choose from. We started with an Orval. This Belgian pale ale is a true classic and just hits right every time you have it. It always makes you wonder why you don't drink it more often. Then we found a real diamond, a 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek 2016. It's not everyday you see a 7 year-old lambic on a list that isn't crazy expensive. This has aged beautifully. Tart, sweet with notes of cinnamon and cherry. We couldn't have been happier. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #lambic #kriek #belgianpaleale #orval #3fonteinen
First episode of 2024 - Tom and Dan talk about the new NJ brewery bill, Forgotten Boardwalk announcing their closing, Equilibrium's private barrel experience, and 3 Fonteinen announcing changes. They talk about local releases including Noble Savage reaching number one on Top Beer Drops. Chase from Top Beer Drops joins as well to go over the rest of the list and to talk about the upcoming list which is sure to include a particular local brewery for the first time. He also previews the TBD awards for the year that was 2023.
It's the end of year and of course we have one last episode to give you. Drinking tasty beers takes no breaks and neither do the episodes. As always, Martin brings his best to the episode with an outstanding 3 Fonteinen. Zenne Frontera Blend No 94 is a blend of five lambics aged in nine Oloroso barrels and one Amontillando barrel. Stefan didn't want to be out done so he brings one of the stellar Lervig Off the Rack imperial stout. Off the Rack Port is a collab beer with Basqueland Brewing. The 13.4% ABV imperial stout is aged in tawny port barrels for 9 months. 2023 is over now and we're really excited about 2024...because that means more beers! Have a Happy New Year! #beer #craftbeer #drinks #3fonteinen #lambic #gueuze #imperialstout #lervig

Spontaneous fermentation may be the most unique brewing technique in the world and the beers they produce are just as interesting, with many flavors not seen outside these styles. But “spontaneous” doesn't really tell you anything about what goes into making lambic, gueuze and American made versions from insane boiling hours to months and years waiting to see if the beer is actually any good to sell. Today we talk to two producers: one a classic lambic house from the Senne River Valley and the brewery that defined American sour brewing.Werner Van Obberghen is one of the owners of Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen. In 2013, Armand Debelder and Michaël Blancquaert called upon Werner to help shaping the futureof 3 Fonteinen. With his experience in strategy and with masters in finance and business economics,he is now responsible with Michaël for managing 3 Fonteinen and its team of twenty. Michaël takescare of the creative & operational side (brewing, blending, bottling, labelling) while Werner managesthe business side (administration, sales, marketing, tasting room).Michaël and Werner continue the life-long craftmanship of Armand and – inspired by his values andwishes – took 3 Fonteinen a step further. Longer barrel ageing, a local cereal and hop collective withfarmers, a network of families with Schaarbeekse sour cherries, a direct relation with some of themost progressive biodynamic wine makers are just a few examples.Jeffrey Stuffings grew up on the gulf coast of Florida. He studied government at Notre Dame and law at Boston College. While in law school, he discovered homebrewing and craft beer. He and his wife Amber moved to Texas 2007. Shortly thereafter, Jeff began working on starting Jester King with Amber (co-founder) and brother Michael Steffing (co-founder). Today, Jeffrey focuses on beer making and Jester King's operations. He and Amber live in the Dripping Springs, Texas area and have two children Laura and George. Academy Award® nominated Filmmaker Jerry Franck pops in to fill us in on the film he's just released entitled ‘Bottle Conditioned' where he explores the small Belgian community of lambic beer. He's documented and traveled to learn where brewers and blenders of different generations wrestle with tradition and the increased demand for their rare beers after decades of doubting anyone would drink it. He was intrigued by the niche following of lambics and we highlight Cantillon (!), 3 Fonteinen, and Bokke breweries. We talk tradition, history, what he saw, how he felt and the adventures of filmmaking as well as Jerry's favorite movie and what inspires him. He also delivers his message to those striving to make in the film industry, but also any industry. Enjoy! Hill Farmstead, as no one should be surprised, has one here. Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen brewery also has one at the top of this list. At the very top - if you like sour beer - you already know this name. Raf Meert is actually an architect, but in his chest also beats a heart for history, especially the history of beer. Over years of painstaking work, he has developed a completely new view of the history of Faro, Lambic and Geuze. In the process, he uncovered many secrets and demystified myths and legends surrounding this fascinating beverage. Of course, you don't just make friends with that, but Raf has a broad back and a huge amount of expertise, which he lets us share in today's BierTalk...
Passionate people tend to have exacting ideas of how to do things, and Pierre Tilquin is no exception. The founder of Gueuzerie Tilquin (https://gueuzerietilquin.be/en/) has spent over a decade now purchasing lambic from classic houses like 3 Fonteinen, Cantillon, Boon, Lindemann's, and Girardin then aging this lambic in his own facility before finally blending it in carefully considered ratios. A perfect lambic blend is not solely based on taste—making sure the blend has the perfect amount of residual sugar to re-ferment in the bottle to the appropriate carbonation is of utmost importance. But some of the myths about lambic—like the idea that young lambic provides the fermentable sugar for bottle conditioning—has not proven true in Tilquin's experience. Certain producers tend to produce lambic that finishes at higher or lower gravities. Some years, weather and culture conditions may completely alter the expected fermentation arc. That leaves Tilquin to do what blenders have done for centuries—use the tools at their disposal to build blends that are both artful and inspired, but also functional. In this episode, Tilquin discusses: The characters of each of the brewers' lambics he uses Using specific barrel sizes for lambics with different aging goals Maintaining the terroir of the producer with a strict barrel-cleaning regimen Temperature control in the barrel facility Developing a signature Tilquin style of gueuze blend Using trace amounts of certain “off” flavors in blends Trialing fruit for addition to lambic Brewing his own lambic for the first time And more. Groomed by retired master blender Armand Debelder, a new generation has assumed the stewardship of the 3 Fonteinen lambic brewery and blendery in Beersel and Lot, Belgium. Their focus is on preserving their mentor's approach to brewing, blending, and passion for the lambic tradition, while also looking for ways to root that product more deeply in its history and in its region. Led by managing director Werner Van Obberghen and brewer Michaël Blancquaert, the 3 Fonteinen team has been navigating the rough seas of the pandemic, looking ahead to ambitious plans for expansion while working to maintain the reputation of 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze. One project, now under way, is to brew lambic using heirloom wheat and barley varieties grown in the region by Pajottenland farmers. In this episode recorded amongst the barrels of the famed lambic cellar, Van Obberghen and Lukas Van den Abeele—who has done extensive research on the grains—discuss that program as well as how it fits into Debelder's vision for the future of 3 Fonteinen. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): For nearly 30 years, G&D Chillers has set the mark for quality equipment you can rely on. On this episode we go all in on Lambic. John and Mr. Steve sample some Lindemans, Gueuze Tilquin and 3 Fonteinen. We hang out with Jerry, the Director of the documentary Bottle Conditioned. He schools us on all things Lambic, we watch the trailer for the documentary and we talk about what went into making the film. Please subscribe, rate and share! Thank you!
As the year comes to a close, we gather together once more to celebrate life and enjoy friendship. We each looked for something special to share. Martin brought out a 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Vintage 2016. What makes this a vintage over a regular geuze release? It's cellared for up to 3-5 years before it's released instead of 6 months. The result is no two bottles are exactly the same and each promises a delightful experience. Stefan brought Moersleutel Indulgence Three from The Guild box. This Indulgence was aged in Mount Fuji rum barrels. It's got a rich dark sugar and raisin combo that is perfect for sipping and reflecting the past year.
Advent 2021 Day 16 is an extra special treat. It's a lambic from our favorite brewery 3 Fonteinen. Golden Dosjel might be called a defect or it might be called a blessing. Originally intended to be a Golden Blend release, fermentation stopped in the bottle so it doesn't ferment. Golden Blend is a blend of one-, two-, three-, and at least 25% four-year-old lambics and matured on oak barrels before being added to the bottles to further develop. We're having blend 41.

"The downside is I can't read anything else on this bottle" Beer: Oude Kriek 3 Fonteinen (Belgium) Poetry: Calling a Wolf a Wolf by Kaveh Akbar Girl Crush: Rett Madison Another episode, another struggle to get our outro just right. But you're going to have to listen to the whole thing to hear that for yourself. This week, we enjoy as Erica struggles to properly pronounce Belgian words, interpret non-American date notation, and find a synonym for "earthy" as she enjoys the Oude Kriek Belgian Lambic from 3 Fonteinen. We also read poems that are both beautiful and unsettling from Kaveh Akbar's Calling a Wolf a Wolf - a book of poems that are about recovery from addiction without being too voyeristic. We hope you enjoy this week's episode and make sure to give girl crush Rett Madison a listen (or a thousand) on Spotify. Cheers!
The 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze from Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen just might be the best beer we've ever tasted on the show. Our memory was a little fuzzy as to how we acquired this beer and Adam drops some knowledge on how to properly pour a bottle conditioned beer. Hope you enjoy the show! Tweet Us: @overflowtaps
Martin was excited to try these two beers. Of course we love 3 Fonteinen gueuze and lambics, but what about a collab with Brouwerij Loterbol? Does a blend of strong Belgian tripel blond mix well with a lambic? It's interesting to be sure. After that he brings out a collab between US Cascade Brewing and Danish Mikkeller called Bean to Barrel Triple. This is a sour triple ale made by Cascade with chocolate provided by Mikkellers' Bean Geeks Craft Chocolate.

We’re celebrating our big 300 by treating ourselves to the exquisite (and expensive) beers from one of Belgium’s longest-running gueuze producers, Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen. Despite the occasion, we just do it like we have for the last 300 by reviewing carefully crafted beers as sloppily as possible, only diverting to mini-tangents about Craig’s assassin dog, horse accoutrements, Goozzwords, vacation mouth, forced floors, nighttime TinglersⓇ, and Mosher’s leveled-up skill set. Thanks for listening at any point during our 300 episodes - we hope it’s been entertaining (and just a little informative). They said it couldn't be done... but we did it. A full year of shows! Tasting 52 was a mix of beers that we drank and loved this year, sprinkled in with some specialties we've been holding on to. This last show of the season was a great one and we were even joined by a friend who's living in the Netherlands, Jess! Thank you for listening to us through these 52 shows. Beer Line-up: Iris - Cantillon, Hommage - 3 Fonteinen, Tart of Darkness with Cherries and Vanilla - Bruery Terreux, Hazlenut Imperial Stout - Untitled Art, and As Good As It Gets Imperial Stout - Põhjala. Local Spotlight was from Second Street Brewing Company. Break music is a little bit of Avril. Intro and Exit Music provided by bensound.com
On this weeks episode of The Last Drop, JB & Khody are back for beer week with some Belgian Ales. Khody brings in 4 Belgian Ales starting things off with a St. Bernardus & working our way up to a 3 Fonteinen. As always sit back, turn your headphones up & don't stop, keep pouring.
Eoghan is the writer for the blog Brussels Beer City and we were excited to have him join us for a conversation of all things Belgium. Bryan joined Evan stateside and we talked with Eoghan and Chad, who were in Brussels, for a dive into the beers that excite their drinking culture. We simultaneous sampled beers from Brasserie de la Senne, Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen, and Westvleteren. Eoghan talked about the brewer mentality of Belgian brewers and why the taproom model isn't like it is in the states. What excites Belgians about American beers? What's the drinker's culture in Brussels? What do brewers think of American Lambic style beers (hint: they laugh)? Tune in to this honest and thoughtful discussion with our fiends in Brussels, it was definitely a fun time!!
The summer has been keeping us all busy but we are back with an amazing new episode with our friends Michael and Jenna. Jenna hosts her own YouTube channel (ieatallthechips) to showcase her enthusiasm for all things chips. We paired some amazing beers, such as 3 Floyds Brewing's 'Rrari Crochet, Perennial Artisan Ales' Blue Ridge, and Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen's Oude Geuze Golden Blend with some complimentary spuds to highlight each offering. It was an entertaining time sipping great beers, crunching great chips and not to mention a drop in from Bryan, Trey barking, and a broken glass. We also had the privilege of sampling a bottle of Mook Meadery's "The Big Montana", a strawberry vanilla milkshake style mead which was a big hit with the crowd...thanks to DJ!! Tune in to hear from Jenna tell us about her YouTube channel, how she became such a chip enthusiast and if she thinks cheese puffs are chips or not! This was a fun one for sure, cheers from P+P!!!

Mark, Evan, and Ryan are joined by Andy (and other friends!) to dig in to the Abbott Annual Christmas Share. We start off by a couple of vanilla bombs by 3 Floyds Brewing and Forager Brewery. We are sure to test our palates with a couple of blind tastings but also wreck our palates on one of the more interesting beers of the night. Lots of other big beers from Perennial Artisian Ales, Toppling Goliath Brewery, Side Project Brewing, Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen, J Wakefield Brewing, Funk Factory Geuzeria, and Shared Brewing. No great beer was left untested as we enjoyed this special holiday gathering to share our best beers, cheers!!!
Dziś ponownie wracamy do Belgii, z podwójną mocą! Ile lat doświadczenia potrzeba, by warzyć ten styl i w jakim wieku należałoby zacząć? We celebrate the big one-five-oh with the most valuable lineup of beers we’ve ever put to our lips - and the bottles practically pop themselves in revelry. Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen made these four special gueuzes to save itself after a terrible mishap and released them in very limited quantities back in 2011, and we’re lucky to have them all here. We also commemorate the occasion by resurrecting everyone’s favorite beer podcast reviewing game: Beers Against Humanity. So while we try to wrap our brains around the deliciousness of these world-class beers, we talk about what Billy Corgan smells like and other matters of equal import. Craig introduces a successful new segment, and we duck for cover from flying corks. (It says corks, just to be clear.) Cheers to another 150! Season 3, Episode 40 – This week, we’re blind ranking 13 different gueuze-style beers. The gueuze showdown was inevitable, really. I mean, IPA, stout, and pilsner showdowns are all good and well, but a gueuze showdown is really hard to pull off. Since “sour beers” have been all the rage for the last ten years or so (at least from our limited perspective), it seemed natural to put on our big-boy pants and get to the real deal: gueuze-style beer and lambic. The Gueuze Showdown As always, this showdown is by no means a definitive list or ranking. Many beers were left out of this showdown simply because we couldn’t get them. Gueuze is a tough style to nail for many breweries and blenderies, as is evident in this showdown. Making a great gueuze is tough, and they’re equally hard to acquire. We tried to get as many quality gueuze-style beers as we could find, so don’t get butt-hurt because we didn’t include your favorite. It should also be noted that John was the proctor for this showdown. He served up the beers and participated in the ranking, but the final scores on this showdown do not take his scores into account, since he knew what the beers were upon evaluation. Here are the beers that we sampled in the showdown, listed in the order they were served: Beer #1 – Brouwerij Lindemans – Oude Gueuze Cuvée René Beer #2 – Brouwerij Boon – Oude Geuze Boon Black Label Beer #3 – Gueuzerie Tilquin – Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L’Ancienne Beer #4 – Brewery John Martin & Brewery Timmermans – Timmermans Oude Gueuze Beer #5 – Brasserie Cantillon – Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio Beer #6 – Hanssens Artisanaal – Oude Gueuze Beer #7 – The Bruery – Rueuze Beer #8 – Brouwerij Boon – Oude Geuze Beer #9 – Mikkeller – Hues Beer #10 – Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen – Oude Geuze Beer #11 – Brouwerij Girardin – Gueuze 1882 (Black Label) Beer #12 – Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck – St. Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition Beer #13 – The Lost Abbey – Duck Duck Gooze (2016) Results and rankings: #13 Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck – St. Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition Average Score: 31.67 Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck – St. Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition This is a gueuze that seems to be readily available in most mid to high-end bottle shops. For myself (John), it’s one of the first of the style that I got my hands on. Unfortunately, we thought this beer was the worst of the group, with very prominent notes of acetone. #12 Mikkeller – Hues Average Score: 40.67 Mikkeller – Hues This beer was weird. It was the darkest of the group. It came off with really big caramel notes, similar to something like an amber ale or stout, but it was also sour. While sour stouts and amber ales are totally a thing, this beer just came off, well, gross. Overall, it was an awkward experience for all but Greg, who gave it a 70 for some reason… #11 Brasserie Cantillon – Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio Average Score: 41.67 Brasserie Cantillon – Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio It goes without saying that it’s both surprising and disappointing that Cantillon ranked so low. The acetone notes were really distracting and the beer came off as very one-note. It also displayed acetic characteristics on the nose that John picked up. We truly think that this was either a bad bottle or bad batch because Cantillon usually never fails to deliver quality gueuze. #10 Hanssens Artisanaal – Oude Gueuze Average Score: 61.00 Hanssens Artisanaal – Oude Gueuze This is one of the more recognizable brands of gueuze that one can find. While Hanssens hit the target with this beer’s acidic notes, the solvent-like nose and lack of a funky backbone drove this beer to the bottom half of the list. #9 Brewery John Martin & Brewery Timmermans – Timmermans Oude Gueuze Average Score: 64.33 Brewery John Martin & Brewery Timmermans – Timmermans Oude Gueuze This beer was super-tart, and was described by Nagel as a “funky, Sour Warhead [candy]”. Notes of honey and soil were prominent, and while everyone else gave this beer lower scores, John really seemed to like it and gave it a 78. #8 Gueuzerie Tilquin – Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L’Ancienne Average Score: 70.67 Gueuzerie Tilquin – Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L’Ancienne For us, Tilquin Gueuze is one of the harder to find beers of the group. While the beer was fairly complex, displaying notes of hay, grass, funk, and oak, it was also a bit aggressive in those areas. Matt noted that it smelled like acetone, and Jason though it smelled like an old log. It brought the sour and funk, but the other aspects of the beer were too distracting. #7 Brouwerij Boon – Oude Geuze Boon Black Label Average Score: 73.00 Brouwerij Boon – Oude Geuze Boon Black Label Middle of the road. That’s what this beer is. While it was a bit watery and underwhelming, it wasn’t a total let down. Jason didn’t want to take points away for its subtleness, but in the end it just didn’t hit all the right notes. #6 The Bruery – Rueuze Average Score: 75.67 The Bruery – Rueuze This beer was immediately pointed out as an American interpretation of gueuze. Notes of vanilla and oak were prominent. There was a lovely sour bite to it, with fruit and citrus notes backing it up. While it wasn’t necessarily true to the gueuze style, Rueuze stood out as a unique and ambitious beer that was both delicious and interesting. #5 Brouwerij Lindemans – Oude Gueuze Cuvée René Average Score: 80.00 Brouwerij Lindemans – Oude Gueuze Cuvée René This was the first beer served in the showdown, and that was on purpose. Lindemans gueuze is a great example of the style that is widely available, even at big box stores like Total Wine and More, and BevMo. The beer had an aggressive, funky nose and a nice tart acidic flavor to back it up. It ultimately lost points for being a bit skunked, but hey, it’s in a green bottle so, it’s to be expected. Overall, it’s a great example of the style and definitely worth picking up. #4 Brouwerij Boon – Oude Geuze Average Score: 85.33 Brouwerij Boon – Oude Geuze Overall, this beer was great. Notes of sesame seed, and funky bread were prominent, and the flavor was bright and tart with a touch of tannin. A classic gueuze and again, well worth the buy. #3 The Lost Abbey – Duck Duck Gooze (2016) Average Score: 88.00 The Lost Abbey – Duck Duck Gooze (2016) Duck Duck Gooze was the most pale in color of the group. Notes of fruit, hibiscus, and acidity were quite lovely on the nose, and the beer had a big fluffy head. The acidity on the palate was subdued and balanced. While we thought it may not be 100% true the style, it was definitely one of the best, even at $40+ per bottle. #2 Brouwerij Girardin – Gueuze 1882 (Black Label) Average Score: 90.33 Brouwerij Girardin – Gueuze 1882 (Black Label) Notes of cheese (yum), funk, and earthiness were prominent in Gueuze 1882. The beer had a nice clarity, a subtle funk backbone, and a pleasant, tart bite. It was an overall well balanced and delicious beer and its high ranking was not a surprise at all. #1 Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen – Oude Geuze Average Score: 93.33 Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen – Oude Geuze 3 Fonteinen ranking number one in the showdown came as no surprise to any of us. Matt constantly gushes over the quality lambic blends that this blendery produces, and Oude Geuze was no exception. This was a stellar beer. The grassy, barnyard notes were balanced with a refreshing sour-citrus flavor and funky base that was nothing short of spectacular. If you see this beer, buy it.
