Hey guys, today I have a story for you that's very special to me. Lost Abbey is a brewery out of San Diego that needs no introduction. Tomme and the team over there have inspired breweries all over the world to push beyond the ordinary and intentionally create new and exciting beers of circumstance. They were a fundamental part of what created my perception of the expectations I wanted my brewery to live up to and I know I'm not alone in that.  We've talked repeatedly on this show about how specialization is dead. Niches get stitches as I've started saying. 14% abv beers aged in multiple barrels for multiple years, obscure, even historical styles and yes, even mixed culture sour beers have been shrinking in popularity and, subsequently, profitability.  The Lost Abbey was one of the pioneers in the American speciality brewery category. So when I heard that they reduced their square footage, equipment and staff I knew that it was a story I needed to dig into and share with y'all.  Tomme was nice enough to sit with me for two hours, answer my probing questions and share what he'd found out the hard way. There is backstory, pain, business lessons, hope for the future and of course, insights into How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery.  Reach out to Tomme at Tomme@lostabbey.com Lost Abbey Website Lost Abbey Facebook Lost Abbey Instagram Lost Abbey Twitter Story about their growing down Episode Sponsored by: Accubrew Brewery Direct Simpson Motorcycle Helmets BrewBids Made To Measure Communications Somnifix (use DAMNBREWERY at checkout for 10% off) Where to get my book --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/damnbrewery/support

2022 has been rough on craft beer. From the macroeconomic forces hitting the entire economy—rising rents, rampant inflation in raw materials and logistics costs, shortages, rising labor costs—to the industry-specific challenges like changing consumer interest in packaging formats, shifting beer styles, distributor focuses, changing draft beer landscape, and more, it's become increasingly difficult to operate brewing businesses successfully. For Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey cofounder Tomme Arthur, the solution is to "grow down," or get comfortable being smaller. For so many breweries, planning for future growth has always informed every decision, from branding to brewhouse, but after 17 years of constant reinvestment into future growth that now looks like an unreachable horizon, Arthur is having second thoughts. In this episode, recorded initially for a written Q&A in the latest issue of our Brewing Industry Guide, Arthur shares his perspective on topics like: dealing with brewery square footage that isn't generating revenue challenges in shallow and wide distribution distributor consolidation and changing priorities the hidden cost increases in triple net commercial leases rising raw materials costs the shift in consumer interest in sour beer revamping the existing brewhouse to be more attuned to proper inventory levels the hidden costs of operating more taproom locations And more. Jackie O's Brewery doesn't seem to be interested in bringing back malt liquor We started out our talk with Jackie O's Pub & Brewery founder Art Oestrike by talking on a topic we're passionate about - 40s of malt liquor.  The brewery has brewed malt liquor in the past and we asked Art if it was time to do another one, and make it available in 40-oz bottles.  "Who wants that?" he replied.  We do, Art.  We do. After gathering ourselves, we carried on with co-Directors of Brewing Operations Seth Morton and Alan Gordon.  We learned about the origins of Jackie O's brewery and how Art's mother inspired the name,  Oestrike shared his passion for sustainability in his business, they brew with 40% solar power and return what they don't use to the grid.  They also have a farm where they grow some of the ingredients for their beer and food, and a bake shop to supply pastries and breads. Morton and Gordon tell us about a few of their new beers and we get into a discussion on CO2 recapture and the costs and benefits to a brewery.  Finally, we learn about their upcoming Columbus, OH expansion.  Our friend in the area tells us they've got a huge patio coming up.  Good times all around.   The Beer List Jackie O's Brewery Dark Apparition BBA Imperial Stout Hank's Premium Pilsner Thread Count BBA Imperial Stout brewed with honey and lactose and conditioned on cacao nibs, vanilla beans, and orange zest  Under a Cloud NEIPA Craft Beer News St. Bernardus is Turning 75, and They’re Doing Some Fun Stuff To Celebrate Brits Are Drinking More Beer Than Brewers Can Make States Are Beginning to Roll Back Meal Requirements with Drinks Service Don't miss these other great episodes... Colby, Tom and Chris reflect on the early years of their friendship and chat about what makes San Diego such a strong brewing community. Flash backs to the days of sharing recipes and learning through books before the internet existed abound! Tom and Chris delve deeper into the beginnings of their businesses, the effects of different yeasts in beers and how brewing has shaped their lives. Later, Tom uses his medieval studies degree to dissect the true meaning of Lord Chandler’s newest titles and the four talk about Colby’s career over his 23 years with Ballast Point. Chris White: Chris White lives in San Diego, CA, where he serves as President and CEO of White Labs Inc. Chris founded White Labs in 1995 to manufacture yeast cultures and provide fermentation services to the brewing, wine, and distilling industries. Chris has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California San Diego and a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California Davis. While at Davis, Chris did a summer internship at Genentech Inc, the world's first biotechnology company. White is coauthor of Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation, co-designer of BrewMaster: The Craft Beer Game, and has published numerous articles on yeast, beer, and fermentation. Chris White was a lecturer in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at UC San Diego from 1999-2007 and is currently teaching in Brewing Certificate Program at UC San Diego Extension. Chris was awarded the 2013 Recognition award from the American Homebrewers Association. Tom Nickel: Tom started homebrewing at the age of 18, shopping at Home Brew Mart, before he could legally buy a beer. He ended up working there for nearly three years during the time that Ballast Point Brewing was opened. In 1997 he went to work for Pizza Port with Tomme Arthur and later become the head brewer at Oggi's Pizza where he won the 2004 World Beer Cup Small Brewing Company of the Year with Jeff Bagby. Tom bought O'Brien's from founder Jim O'Brien in 2003 and has now partnered with Tyson Blake to run the pub. Realizing a dream that began in 1995, he opened Nickel Beer Company in Julian in 2013. Tom spends most of his time in Julian enjoying life above 4000 feet. Colby's favorite fact about Tom is that he earned a degree in Medieval History from Yale University (and yes, he studied monks who made beer).

Episode 260 - Tomme Arthur, The Lost Abbey & Port Brewing (COVID-19 Quarantine Edition) Happy Monday, Thieves! We hope you are all taking care, staying safe and healthy at home. Before the quarantines really got strict, John drove down to Augie's house for an afternoon of cellar raiding and phone calls. We called up Mr. Tomme Arthur, founder of the Lost Abbey and a brewer of fine quality sour ales to find out how Covid-19 was impacting his brewery, California in general, and to get a handle on what he was drinking. In between deliveries (because the man is committed like that) he shared some thoughts on the beer business, the future, and gave us just a little bit of hope. Phone shows like this are going to be the new normal for a while. For our big 250, we bring together a show that’s been over four years in the making about beers that take at least three years to produce. It’s all American-style gueuzes - er, Méthode Traditionnelle, in some cases - from six sour beer makers. We’re joined by Doug Veliky of Revolution Brewing, just because we wanted a friend to share these with. But Doug shares with us a bunch of Revolution updates, and spoils our dreams on why we’ll likely never see a canned Gueuze. If that weren’t enough, this show also features brief drop-in interviews from James Howat of Black Project (and one of three board members for Méthode Traditionnelle Society), Jason Pellett of Orpheus Brewing, and Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey. Thank you for your listenership at any point along the way of these 250 episodes, and thank you more sincerely for tolerating our terrible Gueuze puns. This week's guest is the stuff of legend—Tomme Arthur, the founder and brewmaster of Lost Abbey. He's a brewer associated with both San Diego’s hop-forward dominance in craft beer, but also the world of barrel-aged Saison and Belgian-inspired farmhouse beers that continue to carve out a niche amongst the geekiest of beer drinkers in the U.S. And Tomme continues to impress both of these highly critical audiences. But Tomme's also a big part of the future. His voice carries weight. His opinions matter to the next generation. And his expectations only seem to get higher for others, not to mention himself. I first met Tomme when we helped judge the Brewbound Start-up Brewery Challenge in San Diego. Later, we'd meet up again, this time in Belgium at Brasserie Dupont when GBH was there filming our mini-documentary about Saison Dupont. We also were lucky enough to document the historic collaboration between Tomme and Olivier Dedeycker, Dupont’s fourth-generation owner, that occurred that day. On the site, we described that collaboration as "punching a hole in time." As hyperbolic as that might seem, to the people involved that day, it barely served to capture the feeling.  So when Tomme came to town for the Windy City Expo, an annual showcase with his distributor parter here, we decided to get together at the Hopleaf, a place that’s supported Lost Abbey from its early days, and have a conversation with a small group of fans in the upstairs bar. We also had some bottles from the cellar that Michael Roper was kind enough to share —and drink—with us.  Here, we dig into Tomme’s origin story, San Diego then and now, brand, portfolio, and barrel-management, and at least a dozen other things. Plus, we had a great Q+A at the end with the folks in the room.

Season 3, Episode 30 – This week, we’re discussing hoppy brew, Saison, and brewery collaborations with Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey / Port Brewing. The Lost Abbey is probably one of the best Belgian-style breweries in the world, creating some of the best saison, wild ale, and barrel-aged beer that money can buy. Today on the show, we’re joined by The Lost Abbey’s (also, Port Brewing Company and The Hop Concept) Head of Brewery Operations, Tomme Arthur. The beers on the show this week represent some of the best qualities of the craft beer movement, from the two collaboration beers that The Lost Abbey brewed with Wicked Weed Brewing and Brasserie Dupont, to the experimental fresh and hoppy Mosaic & Eureka IPA from The Hop Concept.  This Week’s Beers The Lost Abbey, Port Brewing Company, and The Hop Concept beers all come from the brewhouse within The Lost Abbey. It can be a bit confusing when referring to three different breweries that are technically located under the same roof, but there’s a reason why it’s done this way, which Tomme gets into during the show. The beers that come from these three brands allow the brewery to experiment in different ways without confusing or overloading the consumer. Wouldn’t it be weird if The Lost Abbey made a dank-bomb IPA? Yes, it would be. You can’t really find a bad beer from any of these three brands. Their diversity exemplifies the knowledge and creativity of everyone involved with producing their beer. Four Brewers with Tomme Arthur Recording an episode at Port / Lost Abbey / THC was one of the raddest things we’ve ever been able to do as a show. Much thanks to Tomme and the team for putting this show together! More photos from our visit to Port Brewing / The Lost Abbey can be seen here. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
