The crew tackles long cross-country cockpit organization after Ted's epic 5,400-mile journey reveals that going "pants-free" provides a "4% gain" in performance (wheel pants, people!). From the critical importance of blue shop towels to strategic snack placement and lumbar support, Ben, Brian, and Ted share hard-earned tips for setting up your cockpit for extended flights. Ben also achieves peak self-awareness by making "the quantum leap of berating myself behind my own back" on frequency, proving that even our radio calls need better cockpit organization.Mentioned on the show:Midlife Pilot Podcast: https://midlifepilotpodcast.comSupport the show on Patreon: https://patreon.com/midlifepilotpodcastWatch live on YouTube: Mondays 8 PM Eastern - https://youtube.com/@MidlifePilotPodcastManzanita Oregon: https://visittheoregoncoast.com/cities/manzanita/PlanePlaces' second T82 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVlRgni9ynwWilhelm scream: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_screamOWB - Owensboro Kentucky: https://www.airnav.com/airport/OWBGarmin 430, yellow "NO GPS" warning: https://vansairforce.net/threads/garmin-430-message-no-gps.49119/Twin Oaks airpark, Oregon: https://www.flytwinoaks.com/Chris Moran, Midlife Pilot, "I'm Back" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIDq2sCmxsUEP100, live in West Virginia with OG Chris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc5acX35DKEGeorge Costanza's wallet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TYuGe7JaX4Checkmate Aviation (Barry's custom checklists): https://checkmateav.comFlying Eyes Eyewear (discount code: SISKIND): https://flyingeyes.comTed's 3D printed holder/flying eyes organizer: https://www.printables.com/model/1316551-flying-eyes-airplane-organizerBlackstone Labs (oil analysis): https://www.blackstone-labs.com/Bordo sandwiches, Marfa, Texas: https://www.instagram.com/bordo.tx/West Virginia pepperoni rolls: https://wvtourism.com/state-food-pepperoni-roll/Freedom Aviation Network (anti-human trafficking): https://freedomaviation.networkAirports Mentioned:John Tune Airport (JWN) - Nashville, TNOwensboro-Daviess County Airport (OWB) - Owensboro, KYIndependence State Airport (S36) - Independence, ORTwin Oaks Airpark (7S3) - Hillsboro, ORFairmont Regional Airport (4G7) - Fairmont, WVT82 (Gillespie County Airport) - Fredericksburg, TXEquipment Mentioned:Garmin 530 GPSGoPro camerasFlight Design CTLS aircraftCessna 180/182 aircraftCherokee 180 aircraft10% of our monthly Patreon pledge total goes directly to support the Freedom Aviation Network

Bartolino's is a family affair, a generational restaurant group for not just it's owners but it's diners. It all started with a pizza joint on the hill and then the Saracino's opened the first Bartolino's in 1969. Since then they've opened several additional locations including their newest restaurant in Twin Oaks. We sat down with the second generation on this week's podcast, Mike, Bart and Chris, three of the four brothers who help run one of St. Louis' favorite Italian restaurants. While the third generation helps ensure they are keeping things new and fresh, there are several menu items that stood the test of time and date back to the original restaurant. We've finally arrived at the long-awaited Hippie Years episode in the 3-part series on Melody's father Justin Starkweather. (Part 1 is Episode 44 and Part 2 is Episode 55.) Justin gives us the scoop on life in the late 60s/early 70s at Twin Oaks, a commune in rural Virginia, USA. He discusses commune life, the division of labor and how people lived. We talk sex, drugs and rock n roll, and a number of interesting accompanying characters. Of course, as in Justin's other episodes, we encounter celebrities too - Patch Adams and Glenn Frey, to name a couple. There are also cockroaches, skinny dipping, giant snakes, yummy yeast, parties, and a lot of hard, hard work. Oh! And we finally learn the story of why Justin changed his name from John. What a guy; what a legend! Jonathan Kline, MSNA, CRNA, and Director of Education at Twin Oaks Anesthesia speaks with Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy Podcast about creating a successful education-based business for CRNAs. In this episode, Jonathan shares how to develop the required expertise needed to teach others, as well as strategies for hiring effective instructors and hosting successful seminars.   Episode Highlights: Where did Jonathan grow up and how did he enter into healthcare? What were the challenges of trying to launch a staffing business and how did he transition away from the staffing arena? Why did Jonathan choose to focus on CRNA continuing education? How did Jonathan initially develop his area of expertise? What was his first class? How did he get his first students? What are Jonathan's tips for someone who is looking to improve their speaking or presentation skills? What are some strategies he’s used to negotiate with hotels for his regional seminars? Is there any benefit to working with the same hotel brand across the country?  How does he work with other industry partners to utilize the needed equipment for the courses How did Twin Oaks grow its faculty? How did he find his first hire and expand? What happens to the CE industry during economic downturns? Does he have any additional advice for healthcare entrepreneurs?   3 Key Points: There’s room for CRNAs to grow and gain expertise when they spot needs within their practice and add value to their group.  Anyone can be a content expert but you need to learn how to negotiate with the other businesses that your business relies on to succeed. If your course or presentation relies on the use of specialized equipment, avoid shipping the equipment and travel with it whenever possible.     Tweetable Quotes: “I sought out opportunities when they presented themselves and was ready.” – Jonathan Kline “I want to make sure that people have a warm, supportive, enthusiastic instructor that puts their needs ahead of their own." – Jonathan Kline   Resources Mentioned: Twin Oaks Anesthesia Website: https://www.twinoaksanesthesia.com/ Peripheral Nerve Blocks and Ultrasound Guidance for Anesthesia Providers: https://books.apple.com/us/book/peripheral-nerve-blocks-ultrasound-guidance-for-anesthesia/id560397207 Jonathan Kline LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-kline-57238b70 #HealthcareEntrepreneurAcademy #HealthcareBoss #healthcare #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #anesthesia #CRNA #continuinged

In the first half of this interview I spoke with Pam Dawling, the author of “The Year-Round Hoop House'' about the most important information about siting, building, irrigating and soil care for extending crop growing in hoop houses. I tap in to Pam's extensive knowledge of feeding 100 people in the Twin Oaks Intentional Community in Virginia, mostly from her 30' by 100' hoop house and the details of that particular setup.  In the second half of the interview we turn to a topic that so many of you listeners have written to me about, and that's communal living. These days there's a renewed interest in ecovillages, intentional communities, and various configurations of communities like that. Many of you who've been listening for a while know that I've been fascinated by these dynamics and community configurations for a long time too.  Pam gives great insights about her personal motivations for moving to a communal living situation as well as the decision making structure, and many other dynamics that have kept Twin Oaks together since its creation in 1967. Though we recorded this interview a while ago, there's a lot of relevant information to the current world pandemic situation in that we talk a lot about the resilience and security inherent to land based and semi autonomous living.  I want to also send a quick message of solidarity to all of you around the world who have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak and economic impact of the response. As I'm recording this we're in the second day of a nationwide quarantine here in Spain where all but essential services and businesses are closed for a two week minimum in order to halt the infection rates. Now more than ever we have an opportunity to rethink the way our communities and lifestyles are configured and how they interact with the environments immediately around us and around the world. In times like these it's impossible not to see how every part of the planet is connected and how all of our actions, habits, lifestyles and consumption affect everyone else, more directly than ever. To prevent tragedies like this from becoming the new norm we urgently need to restore our damaged environment and work to create earth-wide resilience by regenerating the foundations of our food chains in the form of soil and water resources from which all other life is derived. We must find a way to create societies and cultures based on the care and creation of life in all its forms, not just our own. This unfortunate epidemic can serve as a positive event if it becomes the wake-up-call that inspires massive action on a global scale to completely reinvent the way our economies are structured from those based on resource extraction to those based on resource creation and stewardship. Many of us who have benefitted from the sequestration of wealth from around the world to afford us our comfort and relative abundance, including myself, have the choice to use this privilege to lift other people and other forms of life up, even though it means we compromise our own comfort and ease of living.  On a more personal note, I truly hope that this message finds all of you in good health and in good company. We need each other. We need community. You're not in this alone. If any of you feel like reaching out through the comments on the website or by email, I would love to hear what you find inspiring and uplifting in these difficult times.  Resources: https://www.sustainablemarketfarming.com/ https://newsociety.com/books/y/the-year-round-hoophouse https://newsociety.com/books/s/sustainable-market-farming https://www.twinoaks.org/

I am so happy today to share an interview I did with my very own uncle, Keenan Dakota. For about 35 years, Keenan has lived on Twin Oaks Intentional Community in Louisa, Virginia. Founded in 1967, Twin Oaks one of the oldest and most well-established income-sharing communities in the United States. Keenan is one of the longest-serving members there, and has been interviewed about Twin Oaks for CNN, the Washington Post, and ABC News. In our interview, Keenan shares what life is like at Twin Oaks. He dispels some common misperceptions about intentional communities like Twin Oaks, and shares his perspective on how Twin Oaks members have created a utopian, alternative lifestyle that is a dream for many. For many people who are seeking a better way of living, away from our consumer-driven capitalistic society, sharing resources, food and livelihoods like this might be an ideal solution. I hope you find this interview, as I did, to be illuminating, thought-provoking and inspiring. Technology is a form of material culture and is a human activity. The way in which humans view technology is a social construction in which people use social processes of interpretation and negotiation. The dependence and isolation that result from technology use is invisible and seems natural to membership groups that use it. In our interview, we discuss the way in which people at The Farm, Twin Oaks, Dancing Rabbits, and Earthship Biotecture lived their daily lives by sharing some technology and living without most of it. Chelsea Schelly, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. Dr. Schelly is also the author of Crafting Collectivity: American Rainbow Gatherings and Alternative Forms of Community. She is currently developing a project to further research the economy of these four communities. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He earned his doctoral degree in Public Policy and Public Administration from Walden University. His most recent paper, to be presented at the upcoming American Society for Environmental History conference, is titled Down Lovers Lane: A Brief History of Necking in Cars. Keegan and adder are joined by fellow commune dad Ezra Freeman to talk about raising siblings on the farm. We tend to say that age peers at Twin Oaks are much like siblings, but is this really the case? What advantages and challenges above those of friendships do kids experience? We are also joined by commune kid Lily to chat a bit about her experience as a sibling-less child. This episode was sponsored by Sinasoid. They just hit 10k followers on Instagram and are promoting their new Sliver Series plugs with a giveaway. Go here to learn more! In this episode Ryan and Steve tell you how they'd like you to tell your favorite manufacturers about them. I mean, it couldn't hurt right? We get into our ads pretty quickly this week. First up, Steve tells you about a bass that he wants to buy because it's unique and cool. Next we look at an Epiphone rockabilly guitar before wrapping up with a custom built (and painted) Telecaster. Oh boy! This week's topic, in case you missed the episode title, is the Fender Mod Shop. Fender recently sent out an email announcing their Mod Shop, which allows for limited custom ordering for four of their models. This week's music was sent in by Ryan Tupta for his band, Greyflood. The song is called "Twin Oaks".

More Info Here! 7S3 Stark's Twin Oaks Nestled in the rolling farmland of the fertile Willamette Valley near Portland, Oregon, Stark's Twin Oaks Airpark is ideally located for sightseeing in the Pacific Northwest. The rural location makes for less traffic and a relaxed atmosphere, while providing an easy jumping-off point for flights to either the coast to the west, or the rugged peaks of the Cascade range to the east. The scenery includes a large area of 30cm/pixel aerial photoreal terrain, featuring the various orchards, Alpaca ranches, and small farms in the area. One special point of interest in the area is the massive Glacier rock quarry, located a few miles to the southeast of the field. And what is possibly a first for an FS airport: multiple elevations. Twin Oaks is carved from the side of a gentle slope, and as a result, the Starks' house, garage, and two of the hangars are on a hill overlooking the rest of the field. Lead developer Bill Womack has obsessively researched and photographed the airport over the last few years, with the enthusiastic support of owners Bob and Betty Stark. We're proud to offer the definitive sim rendition of one of Oregon's aviation jewels.
