Can You Actually Have It All In A Stepfamily? Today I'm sharing an interview I did for this year's Stepmom Summit because it's the kind of story that we don't get to hear enough of as stepmoms: a stepmom and mom who not only get along, but are real-life friends, work together, and have made co-parenting virtually seamless for their kids. I'm talking with Emmy Award-winning journalist Catt Sadler and Digital Dept. CEO Sarah Boyd. These women are each superstars professionally, and both vowed to put the kids in the stepfamily first. It's a wonderful story of how the dynamics can come together in a loving and positive way. About Catt: Catt Sadler is a three time-Emmy winning journalist, renowned for her work on E! Entertainment, where she spent more than a decade contributing to E! News, E! News Weekend, Daily Pop, Live From E! and hosting various network specials. She's also been a fixture on the red carpet covering high-caliber events and interviewing celebrities during awards season. She has been co-host of the Vanity Fair Oscars Party show for the last several years. Today, she is the host and EP of her weekly podcast: CATT SADLER Now. Catt has appeared on The View, The Talk, The Tamron Hall Show, and many other programs. After choosing to leave E! over a wage gap issue and receiving an outpouring of support, Catt became a prominent voice for the equal pay movement. She has spent much of her time contributing to the cause by taking part in the LA Women's March, speaking at the Equal Pay Day rally at City Hall in New York, and starring in LUNA Bar's Equal Pay Day campaign. Catt was also selected for the NYDJ Denim campaign highlighting women leading change. She starred in the SECRET deodorant “I'd Rather Get Paid” initiative and MM.Le.Fleur's “What Are You Made Of?” fashion campaign. In 2021 she was featured with a diverse group of women in Summersalt's swimwear campaign celebrating an eclectic group of confident and successful women who love their bodies – in all forms, at any age. Championing women has always been her passion. About Sarah: Sarah Boyd is the co-CEO of The Digital Dept., which represents the most sought-after celebrity influencers. Her current/past clients roster includes Alessandra Ambrosio, Jamie Chung, Olivia Culpo, Julianne Hough, Lauren Bushnell Lane, Jana Kramer, and many more who look to Sarah to help them capitalize on their influential status in the entertainment industry to make their mark in the influencer world. Sarah started her career in Fashion PR and in 2012, she decided to channel her expert industry know-how, her extensive list of contacts, and relationships into starting her own business, SIMPLY, a collective with one goal in mind: connecting. The SIMPLY ‘Do What You Love' event is an annual Fashion and Beauty Conference in cities such as LA, NY, Chicago, and Dubai. Since 2012, SIMPLY has hosted tens of thousands of attendees. Sarah has secured partnerships with prestigious brands like CITI, Topshop, Barney's NY and many more. She's been featured in Marie Claire, People Style Watch, Fox News, E!, LA Business Journal, to name a few. She was named a “Female Founder to Watch” by Forbes and is now a Forbes Fashion and Beauty contributor. In 2017, Sarah completed a successful acquisition for SIMPLY with Socialyte (under the NYLON LLC parent company) and Sarah held the position of President of Socialyte. In 2018, Sarah co-founded the Moms + Babes Box with partner Jana Kramer which is a quarterly subscription box filled with 6+ full sized products for moms and their babes. In 2020, Sarah and Jana sold the business. In 2022, Socialyte was acquired by Dolphin Entertainment, and in 2023, Socialyte and Be Social merged to become The Digital Dept. where Sarah was installed as co-CEO. Adam Daigle, Business Editor of the Acadiana Advocate, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss the biggest business news of 2023. The #1 story of the year is the incredible strides made in 2023 insofar as job creation is concerned. Iberia Parish is on fire with the recent announcement of First Solar's $1.1 Billion investment to take place on thirty acres at the Acadiana Regional Airport. First Solar will produce high-performance photovoltaic (PV) solar modules. The project is expected to be complete in the first half of 2026 and up to 700 high-paying jobs are anticipated to be created. This enterprise is unique in Louisiana in that it is tied to a new solar training program at UL-Lafayette where students will be educated on designing solar panels. First Solar was founded in 1999 and is among the top 10 solar panel manufacturers in the world. Along with this major announcement, other large regional employers include Amazon at 1300 employees and Stuller at 1500 employees, who have both exceeded projections for local employees. The #2 business story of the year is the large number of local restaurants which closed in early 2023, including the iconic Cafe Vermilionville, Lotus Garden, Grub Burger, The Point Seafood and Steakhouse, BJ's Pizza, and Luna Bar & Grill. By July 2023, the number of closings had settled down. The #3 story of the year is the shake-up at the news desk at KATC, seeing the departure of longtime and popular news anchors Marcelle Fontenot and Jim Hummel who will be joining KADN in January 2024. The move is one being conducted nationally by KATC's owner, E. W. Scripps Co., as a cost-cutting measure. While there will no longer be live news read by anchors at the 5 pm, 6 pm or 10 pm news slots, the company will invest in more reporters to cover breaking news stories throughout the day. Marcelle Fontenot and Jim Hummel recently announced they had resigned from KATC News and will be joining the news desk at KADN in Lafayette. The #4 story is the recently announced departure of Anita Begnaud, CEO of the Lafayette Downtown Development Authority, whose last day will be on December 20, 2023. Anita will be moving on to work with her former boss at One Acadiana, Jason El Koubi, as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. Under Anita's leadership, the DDA was instrumental in seeing the completion of a myriad of commercial projects in Downtown Lafayette which had languished for years. She brought energy and excitement to her role as CEO and will be sorely missed. Anita Begnaud, CEO of the Lafayette Downtown Development Authority since 2018, recently announce that she will be leaving to work with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership as VP of Marketing and Communications. The #5 business story is the explosive growth occuring in the corridor at Kaliste Saloom Road and Ambassador Caffery Parkway, including the opening this year of Topgolf on December 15 and Dave & Busters which opened November 27. Adam says attracting these type of entertainment venues "brings Lafayette up a class, akin to going from a Double-A to a Triple-A baseball club" as it causes investors to take a closer look at our market and reexamine what is possible in the commercial realm. Other important commercial additions include the recently opened Chimes Restaurant and the development of the Camellia Blvd corridor near Verot School Road which is filling in with medical offices and a new Rouse's, expected to open in early winter. This whole corridor is now serving as the commercial core of Lafayette Parish, is easily accessible by other towns in the parish, and is the economic powerhouse of the Lafayette community generating tax dollars that would have seemed impossible just a few short years ago. As Adam says, "Costco is a sales tax machine!" Discover Lafayette is proud to name attorney Chris Granger as the recipient of our third annual Business Catalyst of the...

In Ep. #28, hear Brooke Donberg, the Sports Marketing Manager at Clif Bar & Company, tell the story behind featuring six women athletes on CLIF BAR packaging for the first time ever.Back in 2020, for the first time in the brand's 28-year history, CLIF BAR replaced the iconic male climber on the packaging with real-life trailblazers - six women athletes. The six athletes included Venus Williams, Megan Rapinoe, Ashima Shirashi, Jordyn Barratt, Lakey Peterson, and Katerina Nash - representing six different sports ranging from traditional events like cycling, tennis and soccer, to newer sports like skateboarding, surfing, and climbing. This decision was made to celebrate the incredible athletes who require sustained energy to push boundaries and go farther in their discipline. Clif Bar & Company has been a vocal advocate for women and women athletes since its founding days in the mid-1990s. At the headquarters office, the company provides many benefits to support women and parents including a robust parental leave policy, extensive health and wellness programs including an onsite gym, subsidized onsite daycare, a lactation room with hospital grade pumps, and the choice to work a reduced work schedule upon returning from maternity leave. When LUNA Bar was created in 1999 as the first nutrition bar for women, the brand naturally focused on supporting causes that women care about, like equal pay and women in film. In 2019, LUNA Bar closed the World Cup roster bonus gender pay gap for the 23 women on the US Women's National Soccer Team, paying each of them $31,250 to ensure their equal pay for equal work. Clif Bar is adding to this legacy of supporting women by highlighting these six athletes and their contributions to their sports. In this episode, hear Brooke Donberg - a long time Clif Bar team member and advocate for women's sports - tell the story behind how & why women athletes ended up on your Clif Bars back in 2020.

Business Insider reported that women earn 80.7 cents for every dollar that her male counterpart earns. Statistics also show that college educated females now outnumber males in the work force, but are still not fairly compensated. Tiffany and Ashley have firsthand experience with this, and this is an important dialogue for us to have. We want to see women advance, not at the expense of men, but because equal pay for equal work should be our baseline. Recently, Luna Bar, having fallen in love with the US Women's Soccer Team, like the rest of us, decided to close a pay gap. For their team bonuses, the USWNT was short a little more than 31,000 per person, and Luna Bar gifted that amount to every single player on the Women's Team! So basically, we shall be eating the Luna bars until Jesus comes home, to show our full support of this female empowering company! From negotiating pay, to bonuses, to work load versus wages, women often get the short end of the stick. There's hope for change, and we can see it over the decades, through the voices of women and men who want to continue to close the pay gap. On this episode of Bay Area Ventures we speak with Sheryl O’Loughlin, Co-Founder and CEO of www.REBBL.CO, and author of the new book “Killing It: An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Keeping Your Head Without Losing Your Heart”. Sheryl is a serial entrepreneur, professor, mentor and author. She was CEO of Clif-Bar for 10 years where she launched the successful Luna Bar line and doubled the company’s revenue under her tenure. She then founded and built Plum Organics to $100M in sales and successfully sold the company to Campbells Soup Company. Sheryl was the Director of the Center for Innovation at Stanford University and, just prior to becoming CEO of REBBL, was a faculty member at Sonoma State University, teaching Lean Startup Methodologies to aspiring entrepreneurs. This is Sheryl’s second appearance on Bay Area Ventures. We begin the interview by catching up on the changes that led to her joining REBBL as their CEO, then we discuss her new book in detail.Sheryl practices what she preaches and teaches. She advises entrepreneurs to create “purpose driven organizations” and that’s just what she is doing at REBBL, a registered Benefit Corporation. REBBL is the offshoot of the non-profit organization Not For Sale which is working to stop human trafficking around the world. Specifically, Not For Sale is striving to improve the lives or women and girls in developing countries who are most at risk for exploitation of human traffickers. 2.5 percent of REBBL’s net sales goes to Not For Sale and Sheryl talks about how she has chosen investors and co-workers who support the fact that REBBL is about more than just the bottom line.Sheryl, is open and passionate about sharing her experiences as an entrepreneur. She has lived through the ups and downs of building a company and suffered the tolls that it takes on one’s health and relationships. After coming close to personal bankruptcy, Sheryl spiraled into a personal health crisis but, managed to pull herself through with counseling and the support of her family, friends and colleagues. To help other entrepreneurs avoid the problems and challenges she has gone through, she authored her new book, Killing It. Unlike a typical book or business school course on strategy, financing, marketing and all the other nuts and bolts of building a startup, Killing It talks about the personal decisions and actions one must take to maintain a healthy outlook and physical well-being needed to launch a company. In Killing It, Sheryl walks entrepreneurs through the various stages of building a company from the decisions around founding a company, to choosing partners, teams and investors, to the ongoing stages of growth that a typical startup goes through. At each stage she offers personal advice about how to stay true to one’s personal beliefs and how to avoid the mistake of going from a healthy passionate pursuit to a destructive obsession. Sheryl openly discusses her own personal experience of going down the “dark path” and how difficult it was to see it while it was happening and how she ultimately came to put her work and life in balance.Today she is back, her company is thriving and she is happy and fully connected with her relationships. She has dedicated time for family. Her team at REBBL is fully aligned, feel they are on an epic journey and share the dedication and fun of work with each other in order to help each other stay connected and in balance. This is a highly personal story and fantastic advice for any entrepreneur. UPDATED LINK! Protein! #002 Michelle and Steve Introduce the topic and take listener questions! Michelle gives a little perspective on our use of protein. Meal replacement shakes that we're both using that have about 16g of protein each. Michelle explains what Protein is, why it's important and what "essential" amino acids are. We discus why choosing the best source of protein for your needs is important, all sources are not equal. Can vegetarians get complete nutrition if they don't eat any meat products? My Odeo Channel (odeo/9e2d24aa997fa6a0) Audio question from Amaro -- San Diego, CA "...How much protein should I get each day? And what are some good choices?" - Thanks Amaro! Most people are going to need 50-60 grams of protein. You should talk to your doctor and find out for sure. Some people have specific protein intake needs. What is the "Grand-daddy Supreme" source of protein? Soy Isolate. Good Sources of Protein: - 6 ½ oz can tuna, packed in water (44 g) - 1 cup of tofu (20g) - 6-8 oz of fish (42-56g) - 1 ½ cup of nonfat yogurt (16g) - 4-6 oz chicken or turkey (28-42g) - 1 cup of beans (14g) - 1 cup low-fat cottage cheese (28g) - 2-5 oz soy "veggie" burger(13g) - 4 oz of lean pork or ham (28g) - 4 oz carton of egg substitute (12g) - 4 oz lean ground beef, 90% fat free (24g) - 4 egg whites (12g) Try Fish - Without frying Steve complains about his lack of fish-cooking skill Michelle offers up the following suggestion: - Nice cut of 'whitefish' on tin foil - Light mist of your favorite low-calorie butter spray - Some oregano - Some lemon slices - Wrap it all up so the steam doesn't escape too much - Stick it on the grill for about 10 minutes Steve remains less than optimistic but resigns to his need for more fish in his diet. Eggs for good protein? Try an egg substitute or egg whites. Beans! Beware of the sodium and exercise some portion control. Dairy Sources such as cheese may not be good options but used sparingly, everything is better with cheese! Tofu, Tempeh and other soy foods are great! Michelle really likes the Morning Star Farms brand chicken nuggets. Other products? White fish, salmon, unprocessed poultry, Morning Star Farms soy products, any yogurt w/o added sugars, canned beans w/o added salt or fat. Check the Label! Food labels also can be helpful if you're trying to moderate your sugar intake. The nutrition panel lists the amount of sugars in grams (4 grams is equivalent to 1 teaspoon) in a serving of the food. Note that this amount includes sugars that are present naturally in the food (such as lactose in milk and fructose in fruit), as well as sugars added to the food during processing. If you're interested in finding out whether a sweetener has been added to a food, check the ingredient listing. Terms such as "sugar (sucrose)," "fructose," "maltose," "lactose," "honey," "syrup," "corn syrup," "high-fructose corn syrup," "molasses," and "fruit juice concentrate" are used to describe sweeteners added to foods. If one of these terms appears first or second in the list of ingredients, or if several of them appear, the food is likely to be high in added sugars. E-mail question from Kim -- New York "Can you please explain [or] talk about ketone metabolism [and how] low carb diets aim to achieve it. How long does it take the average person to convert to ketone metabolism and how does it burn fat? What kinds of foods have carbs but can be healthy and beificial in a low carb diet?" - Thanks Kim! Ketosis information. Also: Definitions found here. What kinds of foods have carbs but are still healthy? Whole Grains and Fruits and Veggies! You know you should get 5-a-day but, "Knowing does not equal doing." Suffering from Veggie-phobia? French Fries and ketchup don't count as veggies! Be careful how you eat/prepare your veggies. Sometimes it's not that you're eating veggies that needs attention, it's what you're eating them with. Protein bars and supplements are intended for weight gain, mainly for building muscle mass. Beware of the bars that are high calorie or taste like a candy bar. Protein bars are not great meal replacements, you're going to be hungry again soon. Try the CLIF Luna Bar! IN THE NEWS Year of Free Pizza Wittenberg College is offering up a year of pizza to the winner of an essay contest to celebrate Constitution Day. Meat and Poultry producer Expo Meat and Poultry Workshop World Wide Food Expo .We still can't remember what food product has listed 1g of trans fat. If you know, send us some email.
