In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we speak with Roy Thibodeau, a student of Kriya Yoga teacher, Oliver Black. https://www.yogacharyaoliver.com/ Ryan Kurczak and Roy Thibodeau talk about the book "My Dear Oliver", a limited edition book, which is a collection of the letters that Paramahansa Yogananda sent to Oliver Black. About our guest Roy Thibodeau Golden Lotus Yoga for Spiritual Awareness (GLYSA) was founded by Roy E. Thibodeau & Mary Ann Thibodeau in 2011.  We have been disciples of Yogacharya J. Oliver Black for over 45 years and GLYSA was founded to assure the continuation our lineage, legacy, and heritage through Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar, Paramahansa Yogananda, and Yogacharya Oliver.   Yogacharya Oliver was one of Paramahansa Yogananda's most advanced direct disciples, establishing the Detroit, Michigan Self Realization Fellowship (SRF) Center which he ran as an SRF minister from 1951 until 1980's.  He also established Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat in Northern Michigan which he ran until his MahaSamadhi September 16, 1989.  He remained an SRF Minister, Authorized by Paramahansa Yogananda & SRF to give Kriya Yoga Initiation to qualified candidates until his MahaSamadhi.  You can find out more about Yogacharya Oliver at www.yogacharyaoliver.com.  Because of Yogacharya's relationship and loyalty to Paramahansa Yogananda & SRF he was never able to authorize any of his disciples to Initiate candidates into Kriya Yoga. Because of this situation and knowing our destiny to continue our Linage through Yogacharya Oliver we pursued authorization to perform Kriya Yoga Initiations through the help of Roy Eugene Davis another direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda and brother disciple to Yogacharya Oliver.  We asked him to ordain us authorizing us to give Kriya Yoga Initiation under Yogacharya Oliver's authority.  Roy graciously agreed and ordained us under Yogacharya Oliver's authority.  Because of that we incorporated two names into the name of our organization. - If you would like to participate in future live sessions consider becoming a member of The Kriya Yoga Online Patreon Community or applying to the Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program. For continued inspiration and instruction, please read my new book, An Essential Guide to Kriya Yoga Practice. — “You were taught how to think, what to think, how to be and act, etc. This programming concealed your real identity. Inevitably, over time, one layer, after another, of your "make-up", in the form of thoughts, concepts and imagination, succeeded in obscuring your true identity. In time, you forgot about your innocent and spontaneous nature; you forgot about your Essence. Becoming aware of the add-ons or superimpositions to one's original nature is the first step. Undoing and freeing oneself from all the add-ons is the next step. We are not separate individuals, but formless, Spontaneous Presence, all part of the same Essence. The crux of the subject matter is that we are essentially Spirit Beings. We have always existed, and we will always exist. Our identification with the body-form has kept us ignorant, deluding us into thinking that we are unique individuals. We perceive ourselves as different from each other when it is only the body-form and pseudo-identity that differ.”  Valeria interviews  Ann Shaw  — The author of “Who Am I ?” Ann has been fascinated with the ultimate questions of “Who am I?” “Where have I come from?” for as long as she can remember. She spent many periods in solitude and reflection, looking for answers. She practiced meditation, Self-enquiry, contemplation and also attended various solitary retreats. Finding out the meaning of life became the most crucial topic. Driven by a fiery determination and in hot pursuit of answers, Ann immersed herself in a wide variety of spiritual literature from east and west. This included the mystics, teachers and masters of varied traditions, including Ramana Maharshi, Paramahansa Yogananda, Joel Goldsmith, Buddhism, Taoism, Rumi and Sufism, etc. Her interest and passion led her to the academic study of the subjects close to her heart, namely, psychology, theology, mysticism, comparative religion, etc. Armed with intellectual knowledge and graced with several spiritual/mystical experiences, the search continued with a vengeance. The journey had its highs and lows - with long periods “in the desert”, until, at last, further down the illusory road, what she was looking for, found her! The teachings of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and his Master, Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, freed Ann from the illusory “I”, thus bringing her search to an end. In 2013-2014, she spent nearly six months in Nashik, India, with her husband, in the presence of Nisargadatta's successor, Shri Ramakant Maharaj, absorbing the teachings and undergoing the various simple, yet, powerful, practices. She had reached her destination! They remained in close contact with Maharaj over the years, while continuing to spread the teachings across the globe and enabling seekers to visit Maharaj in Nashik. Auspiciously, Ann returned to Nashik for a few more months in 2018, to be with her Master. Shri Ramakant Maharaj attained Mahasamadhi in August 31st. Ann is the editor of Selfless Self, (hailed as a spiritual classic), on the teachings of Shri Ramakant Maharaj, which was published in 2015, and has since been translated into six languages. She also edited Maharaj's books, Be With You, (2016) and Ultimate Truth, (2018). Her book Timeless Years with Shri Ramakant Mahararj 2012 – 2022 by Ann & Charles Shaw was published on March 1st 2022. It is a fascinating story of their time in India with their Master and offers a unique and profound insight into Maharaj's life and the Guru-disciple or Teacher-student relationship. Who Am I? published on April 11 2022, offers answers to anyone searching for a greater understanding of who we are and why we are here. And not only that, its uplifting, vibrational wisdom enables a true experience of the Self. This self-help book contains practical guidance and techniques on how to know yourself, put an end to suffering and find lasting happiness and peace. Who Am I? is a refreshing read that crosses all barriers. Not limited by any belief system, philosophy, religion, spirituality, or genre, it speaks to us all. As well as continuing to write books, she teaches Naam Mantra meditation, as she was instructed to do, by Shri Ramakant Maharaj To learn more about Ann Shaw and her work, please visit: whoamibook.co.uk and annshaw.space         — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

The documentary only hints at Yogananda's experience of Sri Yukteswar's resurrection, we fill in the gaps and also reflect on our experiences of death within our own families. A minute to stop, think deeply and savour our journey of life. 0:00 Preamble; 1:37 Summary of minute; 3:54 Sri Yukteswar gives Yogananda signs; 10:20 God's to help us to deal with death; 23:50 Scenes from the minute and handing of Sri Yukteswar's body; 32:03 Guruji's vision and images of him conducting the ancient Hindu rites; 41:20 The resurrection as depicted in the film; 45:05 The priceless pearls from resurrection chapter in the Autobiography of a Yogi.

Cosmic delusion would have been a difficult hurdle to overcome for Gandhi (in the Indian Independence) and equally so for Martin Luthar King Jr. (in the American Civil Rights movement). Although the latter had great admiration and took inspiration from the former, they both relied on Ahimsa, non-violence to achieve their glorious aims. We discuss all of this in the context of the Paramahansa Yogananda's teaching and especially his famous commentary on Bhagavad Gita: God Talks with Arjuna. 0:00 Hatha Yoga Preamble; 8:24 Minute Summary; 11:25 Gandhi and the Indian Independence movement; 29:12 Martin Luthar King Jr.; 35:07 Ahimsa, vegetarianism and the path; 56:15 Guruji lecturing at Harvard on Gandhi and happiness; 01:07:51 Guruji at lunch. Lord Siva had directed her to obtain a Lingam for her to enter samadhi, to leave her body. Nandhiji had gone through his near death experience with the grace blessings of his first Guru, Bhairavasekarswamy. He initiated Nandhiji in Sri Kalahasti while awakening the spiritual Light of the Lingam. Nandhiji journeyed as a yogi with the Lingam his object of worship. Soon he was blessed with timelessness and consciousness. Saddhu Krishnaveni Amma appeared in his meditation asking for the Lingam. Nandhiji drove 700 km from Chennai to Pavannasam to hand over the Lingam to her. Amma asked where the Lingam was from. When she heard it was from Sri Kalahasti, she realized it was Lord Siva fulfilling his promise of giving her the Lingam. She accepted Nandhiji as her disciple. She introduced Nandhiji to Annai Siddha Rajakumar Rajaswamy Guruji who opened the doors of the ancient Siddha pathway for him. Saddhu Krishnaveni Amma left her body in 2011 with the Lingam serving her Presence in Mahasamadhi.  Nandhiji  https://linktr.ee/Nandhiji

On the occasion of Sri Aurobindo’s Mahasamadhi day we discuss an aspect of His vast yoga which baffles many. It is this possibility of physical immortality. Though Sri Aurobindo made it abundantly clear that this was to be the crown, the last inevitable step of the Yoga, there are many who emphasize on this aspect, as if the Yoga stands or falls by this. The traditionalists argue against the very possibility. All this is obviously a narrow and limited reading of the tradition where also we find ample evidence of efforts towards physical immortality, albeit incomplete, because the crucial key was missing. This talk focuses upon this hitherto much misunderstood aspect of the Integral yoga.

A Meeting with John Sherman in Ojai, California on April 14, 2007. Ramana Maharshi was born in 1879 and when he died, on April 14, 1950, he was 71 years old. Ramana brought to us an incredible, simple insight. Many saw him as a saint, an ethereal being who somehow came down from heaven to transmit and bestow upon us the experience of silence, peace and the vastness of being. But, as far as I know, this is not the way Ramana saw himself.

Buddha Purnima is the full moon day that commemorates the birth, enlightenment and attainment of Mahasamadhi by Gautama the Buddha. Buddha Purnima, is seen as Buddha's day of enlightenment. After almost eight years of very body-destroying efforts, Gautama had become very weak. For four years he had been a Samana. The main sadhana for a Samana was to walk and never seek food – just walking and fasting. This destroyed his body almost to a point of death. At this time, he came to the river Niranjana, which as many other rivers in India today, has dried up and disappeared. This river was actually just a large stream with knee-high water flowing swiftly. He tried to cross the river but half-way across, his body was so physically weak that he could not take one more step. But he is not the kind to give up so he just held on to a dead branch that was there and just stood. So it was just that one moment. He became fully enlightened as the full-moon was just rising. He sat there for a few hours and then he got up. Seeing the intensity of his sadhana as a Samana, over the years, five co-travelers had gathered around him who looked up to him. The first thing Buddha said when he got up was, “Let's have dinner.” These five were aghast. They thought he had fallen. They felt totally disappointed. Gautama said, “You are missing the whole point. It is not about fasting, it is about realizing. The full moon has risen within me. Look at me. Look at the change in me. Just be here.” But they went away. Out of his compassion, after a few years, he went in search of these five people one by one and put them on the path of enlightenment. So there have been many, but this incredible human being, in many ways has changed the face of this planet and still continues to do so. 2500 years is not a small amount of time. - SadhGuru https://isha.sadhguru.org/yoga/history-of-yoga/buddha-pournami/

In Chapter 2, Dabholkar witnesses Baba grinding wheat, and the villagers tell him that Baba thus prevented the cholera epidemic from entering the village. He is intrigued, and decides to write the Shri Sai Satcharita so that it will be instructive for the devotees, and spiritually uplift them. However, he is plagued with doubts about his ability to write the life of a magnanimous saint like Sai Baba, whose life is as deep as the ocean, and all-pervasive as the sky itself. To write the life of a saint, one should become a saint. Nonetheless, he feels that if this sacred work is accomplished, the readers, especially those who have not seen Baba, would be greatly benefited, and they would progress on their spiritual journey to attain their goal of self-realisation. Dabholkar had utmost faith in Baba, and he is sure that, with Baba's blessings, Baba himself will get this work done through him. So, he seeks Shama's help to get permission from Baba, and Baba gives him His consent and blessings. On the very first day of his arrival in Shirdi, he and Bala Bhate had a heated discussion about the necessity of having a guru. Bhate said that it was absolutely necessary to have a guru, while Dabholkar believed that everyone should advance spiritually by doing Sadhana. The next day, Baba asks them about it, "And what did this Hemadpant have to say?" Thus, Baba gives Dabholkar the name of Hemadripant, or Hemadpant. Hemadripant was a man of many virtues. He was the minister of the king of the Yadava Dynasty, and was a prolific writer. So, the name suited Dabholkar, but it was also a dart at his arrogance, as he thought that he had won the discussion with Bala Bhate, so this was the first lesson in humility for him. Dabholkar then surrenders his ego at Baba's feet, and starts collecting material for Baba's Gatha. I will now seize this opportunity to talk about the life and transformation of two skeptics, Balasaheb Bhate and Annasaheb Dabholkar. The transformation of Balasaheb Bhate The story of Balasaheb Bhate is mind-boggling. He was a Mamledar in Kopergaon, and a friend of Chandorkar. The two had known each other since their college days. While Chandorkar was well versed in religious scriptures, Bhate was just the opposite. His motto in life seemed to be smoke, drink, eat, and be merry. Chandorkar was an ardent devotee of Baba, and Bala was a skeptic. Whenever they met, Bala ridiculed the very idea of a well-educated person like Chandorkar paying obeisance to a human. Often, he tried to convince the devotees from not making the pilgrimage to Shirdi. It seemed as if his mission in life was to sabotage the pilgrimage of any devotee going to see Baba. Later in 1894, he was transferred to Sakori, where he heard a Kirtan about Kabir and Kamal by Sant Bhau Maharaj. Somehow, he was drawn to the Kirtan and listened to it attentively. He then came to Shirdi and took Baba's Darshan. The very sight of Baba filled him with peace and bliss. He just sat and stared at Baba, oblivious of his surroundings. After a while, his companions asked him to accompany them back to Sakori. He said, "Wait, wait a bit." They waited, but he continued sitting and the hours rolled by, so they left. So changed was he that he decided to stay on in Shirdi, and make it his home. The once responsible person seemed to have forgotten all about his job, his family, and his home. He stayed on and served Baba until Baba's Mahasamadhi. This dramatic change caused concern amongst the other devotees. Dikshit, Chandorkar and Shama asked Baba to intervene. Baba asked him to apply for six months of leave. This application he did write and send, but his mind was made up. Even his superiors, co-workers and friends came to advise him and take him back. He just said, "Once a person finds his goal, he should not leave it." His employer, knowing that he was a good employee, gave him a pension of 25 rupees per month on a compassionate basis, as his mind was gripped by the Fakir of Shirdi and Bala had religious melancholia. Balasaheb progressed spiritually under the compassionate Fakir, and stayed on in Shirdi until his death. Mention is made of him in the Sai Satcharita, chapters 1 and 44. After Baba's Mahasamadhi, the 13th day's ceremony was conducted by Bala, when he performed Til Anjali, Til Tarpanam and Pind Pran. Dikshit was very fond of Bhate because after his transformation, Bala Bhate spent all his time doing Seva, reading and studying spiritual books. He had a wonderful lustre on his face. Dikshit arranged for his family to come and stay with him. He also took care of Bhate's son, Babu, who was the same age as his own son, Ramkrishna. So he got them admitted into a Marathi school and treated them like twins. He paid for their education, and both the kids got new clothes, uniforms and stationery at the same time. After completing their education in Shirdi, they went to Mumbai for further education. Ramkrishna chose to do B.Sc., while Babu Bhate ...

However, there are many forms of service one can render, provided a genuine feeling or bhav arises within one's heart.   In this interview, we cover the following topics: - Living the Teaching is a form of service - Volunteering in Shirdi or in local temples - Doing Annadaan and helping the community with your resources - Organising groups, using the power of social media - Having the attitude of "What can I do?" than "What can I get?" - Helping spread Baba's Teachings is a form of seva - Not having to feel obliged to do seva if it does not arise naturally Gurujee's temple called Bade mandir we visit together was in Gurgaon. Listen to Nityaananda (Clint Thompson MD) read Sri Kaleshwar's retelling of the story of Shirdi Sai Baba's mahasamadhi, from the book 'Shirdi Sai Baba: The Universal Master.' As Monika Penukonda put it in her introduction to book, "When we listen to stories of Baba’s life, we are turning towards him and he turns towards us immediately in response and we know that he is here. He has always been, but now we see more clearly how he orchestrates the dramas that fill this lifetime. We experience the reality and living truth of his presence. He is real. He is here. And he is most definitely with us. Knowing this is the blessing we receive from Sri Kaleshwar in this book."

Did you know the Hindu word for death means “great bliss”? In that phrase we can hear our theme, “the call to become friends with death.” Of course! If death is the great bliss, surely we want to befriend her. When Swami Dhumavati was managing an AIDS hospice in Los Angeles, Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati came to visit and invited Dhumavati to join her at Kashi Ashram, where AIDS sufferers were gathering to end their days.
