Scott and Ida discuss the nature of "alignment" throughout the last hundred years. Did older texts talk about alignment? When did it become important, and how did that change the way we practice yoga? Is alignment a good idea? They cover early pioneers such as Krishnamacharya, Shivananda and Yogendra, as well as Iyengar and Jois, all the way into the modernity of Birch. This episode is the first of two about alignment, covering the first three "buckets" of what it means.

“When your name is mentioned, what are the characteristics that people implicitly jump to in a millisecond?” This week's show peels back the curtain on leadership, authenticity, and the role of a CTO. Sri Shivananda, CTO and EVP of Product and Platform Engineering at PayPal, joins Etienne de Bruin to discuss a variety of topics all centering around his experience as CTO. Sri explores building effective teams, the intricate inner workings of a company, and the impact of a brand. Some ideas you'll hear them explore are: At the end of the day, leadership is really about building great teams. It's not an act of one - it's the act of many passionate people that come together. Communication channels are critical in leadership. The CTO is the pulse for the customer. Their role allows organizations to continuously evolve the experiences both consumers and merchants have. Authenticity is foundational for creating trust in any relationship. It's about ensuring that the way you express yourself and the way you interact with people is in harmony with your core value system. Leadership is about serving people, but it often gets clouded by worrying about what other people think. Concerns like, “Did I sound stupid?' are common, but they ultimately don't improve your leadership. It's important that you give yourself permission to not be perfect. You become much more productive collaboratively when you learn to stop judging things and people around you on a continuous basis. People who have a habit of reflecting during the weekend have an advantage in going into a new week with new learning. Within a company, the primary operating system involves the reporting relationships such as manager to employee, but the real information and work actually gets done through a secondary operating system of experts connecting with each other. Networking is very important for both personal and professional growth. Resources Sri Shivananda on the Web | LinkedIn | Twitter PayPal

He is also a retired drug and alcohol counsellor and one of the founding members of NNADAP. He has supported many youth in moving through their trauma by showing them the way of integrity, kindness, and love. He has also given them a reality check by taking them to prisons to see where they could end up if they don't course correct at an early age. He is regularly called in as a guest speaker at various organizations, like UBC, to give talks on Indigenous culture, carving, and spirituality. He also speaks about the commonalities and the differences in culture and tradition between the variety of Indigenous nations throughout Turtle Island (North America). On Robert's totem in Stanley Park, his mother is represented at the base of the totem. The most important person is usually represented at the base of the totem.

Today I have the distinct pleasure to bring you my new friend Ashley Waters of Ashley Waters Yoga. I was introduced to Ashley through another new friend, Shay Bellas of Navitour -- which is awesome enough for someone who loves the whole women-supporting-women thing. And then when I started talking to Ashley and she copped to failing out of Jazzercise, I knew she was my people!Ashley's based in South Portland, but she was doing fully-remote yoga long before COVID made that everyone's business model. Ashley Flowers Yoga fuses Ashley's passions for nature and movement, taking her practice onto the water, as well as out into parks and fields (once in a while even sharing space with some four-legged friends!)Ashley's training and experience as an educator shines through in this conversation, as she gives me a much needed primer on yoga styles, and provides a somewhat plausible explanation for the charms of goat yoga.If you're like me and are in desperate need of some flexibility, but get intimidated by all the Sanskrit and woo-infused class descriptions and just decide to stay on the couch, this conversation is definitely for you. And who knows, somewhere in her explanation of Vinyasa vs. Shivananda, maybe you'll pick up some tips to help you cure your awkwardly placed poison ivy...You can check out all of Ashley's goodness through her website, or 'Om Demand' on her YouTube channel (yup, she did that!), or if you really just want to see lots of pictures of cute goat frolic, find her on Facebook, or @youcancallmeflowers on Instagram. And of course, she's one of the guides profiled over at Navitour.com - Shay's startup travel company has hit the ground running this spring, and has lots of fantastic trip and tour leaders featuring their fun offerings on the Navitour platform, so I hope you'll check it out as you're making your summer-in-Maine plans!A few more links from this hilarious conversation:Ashley Flowers Yoga on NavitourHabitat for Humanity Portland PaddleMadeline L'EngleWhat is the Sun Salutation?Smiling Hill FarmNubian goatsShay Bellas of Navitour on Guides Gone Wild

Tantra has offered an effective meditation technique to go deeper in meditation. It says that when we make a conscious effort to recognize the burden - the weight of our body and mind, there is a chance for us to also recognize the weightlessness of the empty space within. One can enter into silence, into meditation by immersing into the weightless space. In this space, there is no content in consciousness. Subjecting oneself long enough into this weightlessness is not only an immensely relaxing experience but also leads to realizing one's true nature beyond the body and mind. ====== WHO AM I: I am Dhyanse, a Meditation Master with a contemporary approach to Yoga, Zen and Tantra. A Guru is a guide that shows you the way. In many aspects of your life, you may need a guide to help you decide what to do, what not to do, which path to choose, and which to avoid. Your parents can be your Guru, your teachers can be your Guru, your friends can be your Guru. Anyone who shows you the way can be your Guru. There are all external Guru's. What I would like to introduce you to is your internal Guru. A Guru inside of you.
