Two new nonfiction books explore the impact of cultural forces in the world of music. First, a number of musicians, including B.B. King, Ed Sheeran, Jewel and Tracy Chapman, began their careers as street musicians. Cary Baker's new book Down on the Corner explores the history and influence of busking through interviews with performers of all kinds. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's A Martinez about some lesser-known musical street legends, like oil drum player Bongo Joe and neo-Dixieland band Tuba Skinny. They also discuss the early historical origins of busking and the way technology has changed the practice. Then, a new book on De La Soul contextualizes the hip-hop group within the modern musical canon. In High and Rising, Marcus Moore discusses how the band created a space for Black alternative culture, appealing to fans of rap, but also of jazz and punk. In today's episode, Moore speaks with Martinez about how De La Soul's popularity has persisted, despite the group's difficult trajectory. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

NYC Winter Jazzfest kicks of its 20th season today, with shows across New York City slated over the next week. This weekend, the festival will put on two events dedicated to the historic Brooklyn Black cultural center, The East. On Saturday, a panel will discuss The East's musical legacy. On Sunday, the Crown Hill Theatre will host "A Night at the East," a concert featuring veteran musicians like Gary Bartz and Billy Hart, as well as later generation musicians like Shabaka, Moor Mother, and Luke Stewart. We discuss the events with Basir Mchawi, a former magazine editor for The East, and Marcus Moore, who co-curated the concert with Jazzfest founder Brice Rosenbloom. Stewart and his Irreversible Entanglements bandmates Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes also join to perform live in the studio.
As September arrives and Anne Arundel County residents of all ages adjust to new routines - from returning to school or college to watching football throughout their weekends - a perennial question arises: What can I (or my kids) snack on? With that question in mind, we're excited to publish our next My ArundelBiz Podcast featuring Moore Crunch: a new but VERY fast-growing business offering sweet and savory gourmet pretzels. We sat down with Marcus Moore, the Crofton-based business's owner - and one of just ten individuals with autism in the country who owns 100% of his business! - and his mom, Kathy Watson, aka "Mama Crunch," to discuss: How Marcus found his peace, and his "missing puzzle piece," in pretzels, and what made him think that the business could work. How it felt for Marcus to make his first sale and, less than one year after launching the business at the Crofton Farmers' Market, how it feels to now be selling at big-name businesses including Graul's Market, The Maryland Inn, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mount Washington Hospital, Jimmy's Famous Seafood, AND most recently Camden Yards - PLUS shipping to every single state in the U.S. AND representing Anne Arundel County at the MACo 2023 Taste of Maryland Reception! Why Mama Crunch thinks we can and should celebrate autism-owned businesses, just like we celebrate minority-owned, woman-owned, and Veteran-owned businesses, and why Marcus's autism helps him succeed. Why Marcus says "If you're happy with yourself, you'll be happy with your business." Why Mama Crunch says "Anne Arundel County has so many resources that can catapult your business beyond." AND much more! So sit back, turn on your snack-a-vision, and discover why “The world needs Moore Crunch!”
Based on an immersive, interactive presentation experience at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE), today's episode features co-presenters Krishanna Roberson and Marcus Moore as they talk with Heather Shea about the concept “How to Not” as a counter strategy for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. We explore this unconventional approach, learning about the work that inspired the session, their unique facilitation methods, and the contexts in which DEI work currently exists that led to the establishment of this counter-strategy to conventional “out of the box” DEI efforts. If you're interested in not just “being” but actually “becoming” you should tune into How to Not!
It wasn't meant to be for Pete Alonso to win a third Home Run Derby title and tie Ken Griffey Jr. in the house that Griffey built. And while Julio Rodríguez eliminated Alonso with that SoDo Mojo, it was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who got revenge for Rodríguez breaking his single-round record by winning the final. So, let's do Vladito's home run chain.* Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first home run off Nick Vincent, 5/14/19* Nick Vincent gave up his first home run to Jason Kubel, 7/3/12* Jason Kubel hit his first home run off Jon Garland, 9/21/04* Jon Garland gave up his first home run to Jermaine Dye, 7/4/00* Jermaine Dye hit his first home run off Marcus Moore, 5/17/96* Marcus Moore gave up his first home run to David Justice, 7/26/93* David Justice hit his first home run off Mike Scott, 9/19/89Mike Scott connects to the Domingo Germán (derogatory) home run chain, which in turn brings us back to the Francisco Álvarez home run chain. Now we understand the bad Mets vibes that much better. And if you're wondering, Iván Nova did give up home runs to both Vladimirs Guerrero, getting tagged twice by Senior in 2011 — the fifth-to-last and second-to-last of the Hall of Famer's career — and for Junior's third, in Chicago, three days after he took both Vincent and Reyes Moronta deep in San Francisco. I've known Marcus Moore for years. I remember seeing him racing the tracks in Minnesota and saying who in the world is that kid! Right now he's one of the top 16 experts in the country while riding for Black Widow. Marcus' season has started out well with wins at several nationals. I recently spoke with him by phone. We talked about Minnesota BMX, his favorite tracks, and preparing to move to the very competitive class of 17-20 expert. I think you'll enjoy this interview because it shows at 16 years old Marcus is thoughtful, hardworking , and likes to have fun.

Happy Asian Pacific American Heritage Month~ hope you all take time to celebrate the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) folks in your universe, including yourself if that applies. While May calls for honoring the Asian diaspora, it has been a painful and scary year for the AAPI community, with surges in anti-Asian brutality, hatred, and xenophobia. In the midst of all the ongoing racial tensions in the US and around the world, many have resorted to lashing out or just resigning to apathy. Some, however, have taken the opportunity to dive into complicated and sensitive conversations about race relations in hopes to build bridges and create much-needed healing. In this episode, Minji sits down with entertainment industry veterans and podcast co-hosts Marcus Moore and Ben Tubuo (or BT). They host Culture Score podcast, which discusses the impact of black culture on entertainment and entertainment on black culture. Together they continue a frank and sincere conversation on the tension between the Asian and black communities, including the history of hostility, misinformation, pain, and shared humanity. This conversation is an invitation to folks to create more points of connection, to listen and relate, to practice and build empathy, and to move out of fear into respect and love. Show: Heat Rocks Guest: Marcus Moore The Album: Mos Def's Black on Both Sides (1999) Writer Marcus Moore, currently a senior editor at Bandcamp, happened to be coming through to Los Angeles for his first time ever and we took advantage by inviting him to join us to talk about Mos Def's debut album, Black on Both Sides. Coming out just a year after Mos and Talib Kweli created a new generation of conscious hip-hop fans with their Black Star collaboration, Black on Both Sides was also the culmination of a coming-out party for the Brooklyn rapper/actor that began earlier in the decade as he began racking up all manners of outstanding cameo spots. During our convo with Marcus, we got into Mos' portrait of Brooklyn, how his singing took everyone for a (pleasant) surprise, why "Ms. Fat Booty" wasn't necessarily representative of the album as a whole and whether or not Mos ever was able to exceed the excellence of his debut.
