Tolgay Arslan is German footballer who currently plays for Melbourne City. Over his 360+ game professional career, he has played for Borussia Dortmand, Hamburger, Besiktas, Fenerbahce & Udinese.  It was an honour for us to sit down with Tolgay and what a truly humble guy he is!  Yes, you'll hear some of the highlights of his career like scoring the winner against Liverpool in the Europa League, swapping shirts with Cristiano Ronaldo, playing alongside Son Heung-Min and Mario Gotze and the places in the world football has taken him.  But you'll also hear a brutally honest side of football that does exist in some European countries.  Like lights mysteriously going out in stadiums to stop momentum, violent pitch invaders and some interesting tactics and incentives to try and sign players.  Plus, there's some really interesting aspects of this podcast that focusses more on European and Turkish culture, rather than football.  Tolgay shares his experiences in having to do military service for Turkey even as an international football superstar!  Sit back, relax and enjoy the superstar himself, Tolgay Arslan.    Follow Tolgay on Instagram @tarslan18    This episode is brought to you by Fleet Plant Hire Solutions. Starting out at the famous Borussia Dortmund, Tolgay played alongside Mario Gotze and Antonio Rudiger for the u19s and was coached by Peter Hyballa who happened to be in Melbourne when we shot the show so he also joined this incredible football discussion. Tolgay has been teammates with Heung Min Son at Hamburg, scored against Liverpool for Besiktas and has won many titles. This was a powerful football discussion that honestly felt like an education even for me which I truly loved. We were also joined by the Assistant Coach of Beijing Guan, Jason Vermeer. If history is anything to go by, Bayern Munich is without a doubt, the biggest club in Germany. Perhaps this is why they have so much pull when it comes to signing players. We all know that Bayern has the funds, and the demand to essentially, bring on anyone who they please, but many clubs are now getting frustrated with the Bavarian giants, as they have now been accused of ‘poaching' the hottest talent in the league. For years, Bayern dismantled Borrusia Dortmund's team, by signing players such as Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski, and Mario Gotze. They even went as far as signing Serge Gantry from Hoffenheim. But the latest player to join Bayern is one Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig. Laimer becomes the second player to leave ‘Die Roten Bullen,' after Joshua Kimmich made the move back in 2015. Many are calling this poaching, but the Bayer faithful will tell you that it is good business. Bayern do not like to feel threatened and considering how close Leipzig finished to them in the league table, perhaps this will go down as just good business. Recent reports even suggest that Bayern went after Borrusia Dortmund's very own Raphael Guerreiro, which if it is true, proves that Bayern will continue to poach as they see fit. In what is perhaps the biggest signing of the transfer window so far, and perhaps the most anticipated; is Jude Bellingham leaving Borrusia Dortmund for Real Madrid. The 19 year has put pen to paper with ‘Los Blancos' which will see him earn around €10 million per year. Dortmund sold the 2022/23 Bundesliga player of the season for a staggering €103 million, but this could increase to €134 million with the agreed terms for the add-ons. One can argue that these numbers are getting out of control, but unfortunately, it is what it is and this is what the market is demanding. This transfer does prove one thing; Dortmund are experts in nurturing young talent into world-class stars - with the likes of Erling Haaland too.  On the latest episode of the Bundesliga connection, DW Sports correspondent Kres Harrington breaks down the latest transfer news coming out of German. Jude Bellingham makes his move to Real Madrid, Naby Keita returns to the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich is accused of ‘poaching' the best talent in the Bundesliga!

Over the past 25 years, football has enhanced its status as the world's leading game, reaching into other branches of society, commerce and politics. Football, more than any other factor, has enveloped whole regions, people and nations. And the sport is represented by the best sporting event in the world which is the FIFA World Cup. The first competition for the cup was organized in 1930 and was won by Uruguay. The trophy cup awarded from 1930 to 1970 was the Jules Rimet Trophy named for the Frenchman who proposed the tournament. This cup was permanently awarded in 1970 to then three-time winner Brazil(1958, 1962, and 1970), and a new trophy called the FIFA World Cup was put up for competition. The latest cup was won by Germany in 2014 by beating Argentina in the extra time with a single goal scored by Mario Gotze. The 2018 World Cup has been full of surprises as goals and controversies were rampant during the group stages as well as the knock-out stage. The VAR system which has been introduced in FIFA World Cup for the first time has been full of controversies, yet successful. But the most shocking fact has been the fall of World Champions Germany in the group stage itself! The 2014 champions were swiftly followed by the 2010 champions Spain. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who share a mind-boggling 10 Ballon d'Or between themselves have also flown from Russia following their teams Portugal and Argentina's departure from the World Cup. The most-crowned champions Brazil were also shown a way out by underdogs Belgium leaving Brazilian star Neymar teary-eyed. With the semis on its way, check out the some of the craziest FIFA World Cup facts that you probably did not know!

The history of globalization is found in more than international political organizations and multinational corporations, free-trade agreements and foreign direct investments, satellite communications and special export zones. When looking at the forces that have driven globalization over the last decades, we must also look to football and especially the World Cup. Indeed, there is no greater proof of globalization than the fact that a large part of the world’s population cheered or groaned at exactly the same moment, as Mario Gotze scored to put Germany ahead of Argentina in this year’s final. Globalization is an important theme in the volume of essays on the history of football’s premiere tournament, The FIFA World Cup 1930-2010: Politics, Commerce, Spectacle and Identities (Wallstein, 2014). Coming out of a 2013 conference held at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, the volume boasts an impressive squad of football scholars, coming from universities and research institutes in nine different countries. After opening essays from David Goldblatt and Alan Tomlinson, the contributors give an in-depth look at each of the World Cup tournaments, from 1930 in Uruguay to 2010 in South Africa. Credit goes to the volume’s editors, Kay Schiller and Stefan Rinke, for putting together a cohesive, comprehensive, and readable collection of essays, one that can be recommended for students of sports history and curious fans of global football. In the podcast, we hear from both Kay and Stefan about their colleagues’ findings, the persistent themes in World Cup history, and their expectations for World Cups of the future.
