"Looking back to look forward" could be the motto of this playlist. It kicks off with a blaxploitation tinged scorcher of a song from an upcoming Charles Kynard re-release, followed by a live performance in which Enemy (Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren) marks a decade of music making by playing some of their key tunes. Also included an unearthed gem featuring a 2009 session by Russ Johnson, Christian Weber, Dieter Ulrich, and albums that mark new directions in the work of Matt Ulery, Ches Smith and Dan Weiss, respectively. The playlist features Charles Kynard; Enemy, Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren; Matt Ulery; Russ Johnson, Christian Weber, Dieter Ulrich; Ches Smith [pictured]; Dan Weiss. We all know "smooth jazz" is a forbidden genre among hard-core jazzbos, but sometimes you run across albums that have no interest in pandering to the listener, but also don't display any rough edges or dirty elbows. Call it "polished," "refined," "plush," or "mellow" - but don't file it next to Kenny G - or Albert Ayler, for that matter. Noah Haidu – STANDARDS; Javier Nero – KEMET, THE BLACK LAND; Brad Turner – THE MAGNIFICENT; Matt Ulery – MANNERIST.
The Maroon's William Kimani and Gregory Caesar interview saxophonist, composer, and educator Arman Sangalang, who performed live at the 2023 Hyde Park Jazz Festival with the Arman Sangalang Trio. He has studied with distinguished jazz artists such as Geof Bradfield, Walter Smith III, Greg Ward, Jon Irabagon, and Matt Ulery, and had the honor of sharing the stage with notable jazz artists such as Bobby Broom, Clark Sommers, Ted Sirota, Lenard Simpson, and Camila Mennitte. "Sangalang's debut album Quartet, featuring original compositions, is set to release in the Fall of 2023." His latest release "Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill" — just out this month — was recorded during the pandemic, and deftly captures the ambiance and atmosphere of this moment in time.

For the second part of this week's exploration of new and upcoming releases we "Focus". As in... we compare and contrast the music from that iconic 'saxophone & strings' album by Stan Getz with the two more recent CDs-both entitled "Re Focus"-by Tim Garland and Silvayn Rifflet which Getz's 1961 masterpiece inspired. The latter was orchestrated by the great French bass player and arranger Fred Pallem who is about to release a fascinating project dedicated to fairy tales in the key of jazz, which sounds... fabulous, of course, just like the prohibition era fairy tales narrated by another bass player (this time he's back on sousaphone) that is writing fundamental new pages in the Chicago jazz book, Matt Ulery [pictured] This and much more in this edition of Mondo Jazz. Happy listening! The playlist features also Jesse Fischer; Takuya Kuroda; Darrifourq, Hermia, Ceccaldi; Tigran Hamasyan. Sometimes the boys just can't agree. This is one of those times. Two new selections split them down the middle (though they at least "like" both selections), while one of the two oldies drives poor Mike (and Mike's family) up the proverbial wall (or is that escalator?) Carla Bley (and poet Paul Haines) – ESCALATOR OVER THE HILL; Matt Ulery – POLLINATOR; Mathis Sound Orchestra – WORLD UNITY; George Adams – AMERICA. Odd crooner Scott Walker and the Giles Martin remix of Abbey Road are the focus of pop matters.

In this episode, we talk with world-class Julliard-trained violinist Tricia Park about her experiences as a child prodigy. We discuss how learning to play the violin and perform for world-class audiences at a very young age made her feel special all the while contributing to a limited sense of identity. She shares her unique insights into what it’s like to live a big life as a quiet and painfully shy child and she discusses simple ways that educators can help their exceptional students rise about the pressures associated with achievement and perfectionism. For more information about Tricia, including links to some of her amazing work with the Solera Quartet, the Music IC Organization or her other projects, visit triciapark.com or check out the shownotes at smallactbigimpact.com for all of the related links to her performances and work. Praised by critics for her "astounding virtuosic gifts" (Boston Herald) and "achingly pure sound” (The Toronto Star), concert violinist TRICIA PARK enjoys a diverse and eclectic career as soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster, educator, and festival curator. Tricia is a recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and was selected as one of "Korea's World Leaders of Tomorrow" by the Korean Daily Central newspaper. An appearance with the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra at Jordan Hall garnered a glowing review from the Boston Herald that stated, "If you see the name Tricia Park in any future programs, buy a ticket." Recent season highlights include a performance of Lalo Symphonie Espagnole with the South Bend Symphony; a recital at Carnegie Hall with Ensemble Peripherie; a performance of the Brahms Double Concerto with the Notre Dame Symphony; a collaborative performance with violist Daniel Avshalomov; and a recording of works by Per Bloland on the TZADIK label with the ECCE Ensemble. When I think of Jazz, the violin is not usually the first instrument that comes to mind, but today’s guest has set me straight. Zach Brock is the real deal and I’m so glad we found a break in his schedule to have him on the show. He’s been a member of Snarky Puppy going back to the early days of the band and has played with the likes of Matt Ulery, Bill Laurence, Wycliffe Gordon, Stanley Clarke, Phil Markowitz and Dave Liebman.
"Keep an ear out for a fresh idea that seems like it’s you." In Shat Talk Episode 003 I spoke with award-winning bassist and composer Matt Ulery who has just released his seventh record, Festival, on Woolgathering Records. Known for his sweeping lyricism, unconventional phrase structures, and expressionistic emotionalism, Ulery’s music is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, and folk – specifically American, South American, Balkan, and other European folk styles. Matt and I definitely talked some shat as we discussed his compositional process, the importance of developing one's inner musical voice, working as both a writer and sideman, and his continuing collaboration with Grammy Award winners Eighth Blackbird. A tour de force of the Chicago music scene, Hood Smoke has been making lasting impressions on listeners all over the world since the release of their debut album, 2012’s Laid Up In Ordinary. The Chicago Sun-Times calls the band a “must-see act.” WBEZ’s Vocalo touts them as “a kind of soul-pop fusion that is truly captivating.” With their second album, 2014’s Regular Neurotic, the band gained critical notoriety. American Songwriter Magazine featured the song, “Never Suffering,” written by band leader, bassist and composer Bryan Doherty. Rough Around The Hedges, the band’s third album, was released in March of 2016. String and brass trios, a small vocal choir, award-winning trumpeter Marquis Hill and Chicago legend Matt Ulery, help to make The Hedges their most anticipated release to date.
Program: Robert Schumann: Adagio and Allegro, op.70 Arvo Part: Fratres Luigi Boccherini (arr. Katims): Sonata No. 6 in A Major, G4 Robert Schumann: Märchenbilder, Op.113 Henri Vieuxtemps: Élégie, Op.30 Aurelien Pederzoli, viola Chicago-based violist Aurelian Pederzoli trained from a young age on the violin and his talent and skill earned him wide acclaim from critics and the public alike. But something was missing. Artistic frustrations with the violin led him to pick up the viola and, to his surprise, his authentic musical voice emerged. “The sonority of the viola just seems to resonate with the fibers of my being,” Pederzoli says, “and I love the viola’s repertoire and the very communal role it plays in ensembles.” A finalist in the 2015 International Hugo Kauder Competition for Viola at Yale University, Pederzoli merges a deep reservoir of musicality with wide-eyed curiosity about his instrument as a soloist and chamber ensemble player, and as a teacher at the New Music School in Chicago. He is a member of the innovative Black Oak Ensemble which pairs classical works with music from around the world, a frequent collaborator with the Lincoln Trio, and he has toured internationally with blues harmonica virtuoso Corky Siegel. A deft collaborator, Pederzoli works with other musicians of many stripes, including members of eighth black bird, bassist Matt Ulery, composer/pianist Fernando Otero, members of the Vermeer Quartet, pianist H.J Lim, accordionist Julien Labro, violinist Rachel Kolly d'Alba, pianist Christian Chamorel, violinist Daniel Rowland, violist David Aaron Carpenter, and composer/saxophonist Miguel Zenon. He also works with many of the leading composers of our time, Recent project have included Lee Hyla, Hans Thomalla, Gunter Schuller, and Robert Dillon, and he has premiered and recorded works by Augusta Read Thomas, Bernard Rands, Mason Bates, Shulamit Ran, Sarah Ritch, Jennifer Higdon, Marc Mellitts, Nico Muhly and others. Aurelian Pederzoli was born in France and graduated from the Paris Conservatory before moving to Chicago. He studies viola with Frank Babbitt and Li Kuo Chang. His violin teachers included Jean Lenert, Shmuel Ashkenasi, and Veda Reynolds. In 2008, Pederzoli cofounded Anaphora Ensemble to explore and present adventurous music in Chicago. Pederzoli was a founding member of the Spektral Quartet in 2010 and played with the ensemble until 2014. His work appears on recordings from Azica, Parlour Tapes+, Cedille, Southport, and Aparte labels. A new string trio recording with Desirée Ruhstrat, violin, and David Cunliffe, cello, of music by Conrad Tao, Jennifer Higdon, David Ludwig, and Marc Mellits, is forthcoming in 2016. Matthew Hagle, piano Pianist Matthew Hagle is a musician of great versatility and depth, whose performances are a rare mixture of musical understanding, imaginative programming, pianistic mastery and beauty of sound. In solo recitals he often explores the boundaries of the piano repertoire, using thoughtful programming and committed performance to integrate newer repertoire and lesser-known older works with the traditional canon. At the moment, he is working on a more conventional project: performing the 32 Beethoven Sonatas in a series of live radio recitals. Mr.
Matt Ulery, the Chicago-based composer and jazz bassist, appeared with his group on December 21, 2012. The program, “By a Little Light: A Winter Solstice Concert,” featured mostly original works from Matt’s newest CD, By a Little Light. Matt was joined by some of Chicago’s finest jazz players: Rob Clearfield, piano; Jon Deitemyer, drums; Zach Brock and Chihsuan Yang, violins; Nicholas Photinos, cello; Michael Maccaferri, clarinets; and James Davis, trumpet.
Ernie Hendrickson joined us for an afternoon of shear pleasure. This man is, without a doubt, scaling up from regional to national level. His performances are uniformly perfect.Ernie brought Matt Ulery on Upright Bass and Chicagoand#39;s amazing pedalsteel master Mr. Brian Wilkie. As you can tell it was, yet again, a magical afternoon.
