New Orleans is a place where virtuosity is always deployed with a celebratory spirit, and Crescent City Jewels is like a Gratitude Journal in song, a rollicking collection that expresses NEA Jazz Master, Grammy-winning producer, trombonist and bandleader, Delfeayo Marsalis, appreciation for the good things in life at a time when so much attention seems to focus on doom and gloom.  In this latest album, Delfeayo set out to celebrate the undersung heroes in his own hometown. To accomplish that, he's brought together a host of veteran and rising New Orleans musicians, as well as a number of guest stars, including big brother Branford Marsalis for a pair of jaw-dropping sax showcases, Rebirth Brass Band co-founder and Big Easy ambassador Kermit Ruffins, “Piano Prince of New Orleans” Davell Crawford, drummer extraordinaire Herlin Riley, and trombonist Maurice “Miracle Meaux” Trosclair. “One of our goals is to show the breadth and the dynamic possibilities of New Orleans music. Our philosophy is to take the important ingredients from past generations and use them in the gumbo that we're creating today.”  That's where our conversation begins.

Lawrence Fields, born and bred in St. Louis, has earned a spot at the forefront of young jazz pianists, thanks to his blending of vintage ideals with a contemporary mindset. For the last five years, in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019, Downbeat Magazine has placed him close to the top of the keyboardist category in their “Rising Stars” critics poll. Fields showcase his dynamic blend of composition and playing in his trio and quartet, and his music is currently being featured internationally. His debut album featuring his trio and solo playing, “To the Surface”, was released to critical acclaim on February 2, 2024. Veteran saxophone icon Joe Lovano – with his unerring ear for youthful talent – has become one of the pianist's biggest fans. Fields is a member of several bands led or co-led by Lovano: his Classic Quartet (originally featuring Lewis Nash and George Mraz in the rhythm section); the Sax Supreme Quartet (with Chris Potter); and his Sound Prints quintet with trumpeter Dave Douglas. The Wall Street Journal praised Fields' “elegant, probing” solos with Sound Prints, while The New York Times noted that he is “integral to the band's plunging, changeable style.” A modern-minded bandleader from the younger generation also relies on Fields, as he mans the piano and keyboards for the Christian Scott Group. Referencing his role on acoustic and electric pianos in the trumpeter's band, NextBop said: “Fields remains a constant lyrical presence on the keys – innovative, expressive, supportive, able to soar like a bird in his solos. He never fails to impress.” Fields has collaborated with Christian Scott on several albums — including co-writing and co-producing 3 songs on the Grammy-nominated The Emancipation Procrastination (Ropeadope, 2017), as part of his work on Christian's Centennial Trilogy with releases Diaspora and Ruler Rebel. He features prominently in the piano and keyboard chairs on Christian's Grammy-nominated live recording Axiom (2020), as well as the Grammy-nominated Ancestral Recall (2019), and the Stretch Music (Ropeadope, 2015) and Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah (Concord, 2012) albums. With Lovano and Douglas, the pianist features on Sound Prints' two critically-acclaimed studio releases: Other Worlds (2021), and Scandal (2018, Greanleaf) — selected by The Guardian as their #1 jazz album of 2018, as well as one of Rolling Stone's top 20 jazz albums of the year. Fields also plays on the live album Sound Prints: Live at Monterey Jazz Festival (Blue Note, 2015), which featured two brand-new compositions written for the ensemble by the legendary Wayne Shorter. He appears on the album Marsalis Music Honors Alvin Batiste (2007) alongside Branford Marsalis, Herlin Riley and Russell Malone, as well as on drummer Terri Lyne Carrington's More to Say (a 2009 disc for which he served as a pianist, keyboardist, and composer-producer). Fields also appears on releases by drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and saxophonists Jaleel Shaw and Steve Slagle. The pianist has been a member of the Watts band, as well as that of trumpeter Nicholas Payton. In addition to performing onstage with the likes of Payton, Watts, Marsalis, and Carrington, Fields has appeared with star bassist Christian McBride, drummer Nate Smith, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, and bassist Robert Hurst, among others. Lawrence's playing is also featured on Christopher North's score for the new Sam Pollard documentary "Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes", which premiered in Fall 2023 on PBS' American Masters television series.

©️ 2023 Troubadour Jass Records Recorded at Esplanade Studios & the EMC for Music - October 14-15 & November 10, 2022 Recorded & Edited in Pro-Tools 24 HD Mixed at White Desk Studios, Los Angeles, CA Edited by King Jalmi #bigband #swing --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

Renowned instrumentalist, Branford Marsalis, has spent four decades in the international spotlight touring the globe and perfecting his skillsets as the standard-bearer of modern jazz. The Louisiana native also comes from a musical family, with brothers—Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason—becoming acclaimed jazz musicians; and his father, the patriarch Ellis Marsalis, Jr., a jazz pianist and educator himself. But how does a three-time Grammy Award-winner maintain his longevity in a recording industry submerged in a world that continues to grapple with notions of social unrest and injustice? How is he able to sustain such an artistic excellence in musicianship despite the racial tension and political polarization happening in this country? Stay tuned as I SEE U Host Eddie Robinson speaks unguarded with legendary composer and bandleader, Branford Marsalis. He talks candidly about the motivation behind his music; how his father, who died in 2020 from COVID-19 complications, helped inspire his approach to confronting racism; and what he really thinks about the future of American democracy.

Cameron Tinklenberg aka ALLIN. is releasing his second EP – “Lossy Matte” – a record that's lush, effusive, chaotic, and introspective in equal measure. The record finds ALLIN. carving out a unique space amongst the litany of jazz- inflected electronic producers. “Lossy Matte” juxtaposes the textures and emptiness one encounters on a blank canvas with the playful distortions of digital compression; inviting us to explore our own self-image in the spaces in-between.ALLIN's last EP, “Ambedo Sessions”, was self-released in the Spring of 2018. The album was said to incorporate the rich synth textures of Flume with slouching Dilla-esque beats. Hailing from the wetlands of North Carolina, Tinklenberg has opened up for hip-hop artists such as Lupe Fiasco, CeeLo Green, Nappy Roots, J-Swiss, Wordsworth, and others. He has also played alongside prominent jazz musicians such as Herman Burney, Delfeayo Marsalis, and Joe Chambers. He was the co-founder of The Coastal Collective, Temple5, the Valedictorians, all which are well known NC-based jazz/hip-hop groups. He also co-founded the Beats & Coffee record label, which produces a steady flow of blissed-out study beats.Tinklenberg now resides in Toronto, Ontario, where he's been studying music technology and digital media development. The fast-passed mashup of scenes and ideas has quietly transformed his music practice. As he continues to immerse himself into the ever changing musical environment that is Toronto, his compositional sense seems to have shifted into a more diverse and broad palette. Tinklenberg's newest work is itself a testament to his ongoing change and growth.J O U R N A L  P R O M P T : What do you practice?   This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! We feature interviews with Dr. Clarence Benjamin Jones Sr., a former speechwriter, attorney, and advisor to the late Martin Luther King Jr., on the occasion of Dr. King's 86th birthday. Our second guest is Delfeayo Marsalis, awardwinning musician and arranger about his latest work: The Last Southern Gentlemen which features his father Mr. Ellis Marsalis on piano. This collaboration is a first for the two men. Music: Linda Tillery & the Freedom Band's Celebrate the King and selections from Marsalis's TLSG.
