This week, I have a playlist for you that stretches across continents and moods, a rich tapestry of sound that celebrates both discovery and the familiar warmth of timeless artistry. I open with a gem from Russia — "Case" by the Ilugdin Trio, a striking piece that caught me completely off guard in the best way. Dmitry Ilugdin and his trio lay down something deeply melodic, harmonically rich, and full of understated elegance. A real find. Next, I tip my hat to one of my all-time favourite voices in jazz, the ever-cool Patricia Barber. Her track "This Town" is a reminder of why she remains a singular force — cerebral, sultry, and effortlessly hip. Further into the mix, you'll find some fresh and fiery ensemble work from Clélya Abraham and company, the hypnotic grooves of Sean Khan with jazz legend Peter King and the luminous Heidi Vogel, and a cinematic journey courtesy of the Espen Berg Trio, joined by the haunting trumpet of Mathias Eick on "Vintermørke." And then there's "Eberhard" — a poignant, sprawling tribute by the late, great Lyle Mays. For those who, like me, hold the Pat Metheny Group close to the heart, this is a moving reminder of Lyle's genius. His musical voice was — and remains — one of the most emotionally intelligent in modern jazz. I close with some adventurous sounds: the genre-bending "El Momento" by Sly5thAve & Roberto Verastegui, the dreamy textures of Rahill's "Futbol," and an experimental nugget from Drift Lab that plays like a sonic science project in the best sense. This playlist is full of surprises, beauty, groove, and soul — the kind of mix that makes you feel like the world's a little more connected through sound. So wherever you're tuning in — just press play and let the music take you. Thanks for listening. Impex Records has been releasing stellar audiophile recordings since Abey Fonn founded the small label in 2009. Impex's offerings have included 33 and 45 rpm LPs (including Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucía's Friday Night in San Francisco and Saturday Night in San Francisco) as well as deluxe 1Step releases such as Getz/Gilberto, Patricia Barber's Companion and, coming June 14, Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra. Here Fonn pulls back the curtain on how Impex chooses and makes deals for its titles, what the competition is like with the larger audiophile labels, how Impex decides which format is best for an album, whether original master tapes have become harder to obtain, whether a one-to-one analog transfer is superior to a high-res digital copy, which act has been Fonn's white whale and which one she was happiest to land.

A broadly acclaimed engineer and producer, Ulrike Schwarz is a trailblazing audio innovator with more than two decades of experience across the film, television, radio, and recording industries. Born and raised in Germany, Schwarz discovered she had perfect pitch at an early age, and as a teenager, she became one of only three students to be accepted into the exclusive Tonmeister program at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. After earning her degree, Schwarz worked with German public radio and spent more than ten years serving as the senior sound engineer for large orchestral and jazz productions at the famed Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich, where she broke the mold as a woman in a male-dominated field and garnered numerous honors for her recordings and broadcasts, including multiple Echo Klassik, Diamant D'Opera, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenindustrie, and Diapason d'Or awards.  In 2015, Schwarz moved to New York full time to team up with her now-husband and production partner Jim Anderson, with whom she's created a groundbreaking body of work in the field of immersive audio. As creative technically as she is artistically, Schwarz designed and built her own custom portable recording setup from scratch, and in just the last few years alone, she's garnered multiple Grammy nominations for her work with artists as diverse as American jazz stalwart Patricia Barber, contemporary Norwegian composer Gisle Kverndokk, and soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom.  In 2022, Schwarz was named Vice President of the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister (The Association of German Sound Professionals) and received a prestigious grant from the Women's Fund of the New York Foundation of the Arts for her work on Jane Ira Bloom's Grammy nominated album (2023) Picturing The Invisible – Focus 1. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Getting into the world of orchestral recording Why it's a good idea to join audio associations such as the AES Mic positions for orchestral recordings Taking an ambience-first approach to recording Preparing a game-plan for your sessions Being selective of the microphones you use to avoid “coloration” How the German vs American orchestral seating can impact the balance of your mixes Recording strings to work in a rock music context Working with reverbs to avoid muddy mixes Why you shouldn't have to use EQ or compression in a mix How sample rates impact the clarity of your recordings How something as small as a power cable can drastically alter the quality of your recordings Mixing for stereo vs immersive audio To learn more about Ulrike Schwarz, visit: http://andersonaudiony.com/ To learn more tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of the #1 Amazon bestselling book, The Mixing Mindset – The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Join the FREE MasterYourMix Facebook community: https://links.masteryourmix.com/community To make sure that you don't miss an episode, make sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or on Android. Jim Anderson: Working with Reverbs

For nearly 50 years, Jim Anderson has set the standard for acoustic audio engineering and production, capturing pristine, high definition stereo and surround sound recordings that have garnered thirteen Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, two Peabodys, and a pair of Emmy nominations among countless other accolades.  Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Anderson attended Duquesne University on a musical performance scholarship, and it was there that his passion for sound and technology first collided in the music school's on-campus recording studio.  After graduation, he took work at the local public radio station, WDUQ-FM, and one year later, he made the leap to NPR in Washington, DC, where he engineered broadcast sessions for everything from news and documentaries to performances by jazz icons, classical orchestras, folk singers, and contemporary composers.  In 1980, Anderson moved to New York to launch his career as a freelance engineer and producer, and over the next several decades, he would go on to record studio albums, live concerts, and film scores across a diverse array of genres with the likes of McCoy Tyner, Christian McBride, Arturo Sandoval, Petula Clark, Patricia Barber, John Zorn, and hundreds more.  In 2003, he became a professor at the prestigious Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. In 2008, he was elected President of the Audio Engineering Society.  Today, Anderson and his wife/production partner Ulrike Schwarz are widely hailed as industry leaders operating at the cutting edge of the immersive audio field, and their world-class recordings are regular fixtures at the Grammy Awards and on critics' annual Best Of lists. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Recording with limitations How to handle high stakes pressure when you're working with the best of the best Helping artists achieve their vision for their albums Adapting to new recording environments Adding reverb to your mixes Using pink noise to calibrate your reverb levels How to create and use Impulse Responses Tips for starting your day with a fresh perspective How to record piano, horns, upright bass, and jazz drums Being intentional with mic placement and selection Using mics to create depth How the impedance of your DI can drastically change the sound quality To learn more about Jim Anderson, visit: http://andersonaudiony.com/ To learn more tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of the #1 Amazon bestselling book, The Mixing Mindset – The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Join the FREE MasterYourMix Facebook community: https://links.masteryourmix.com/community To make sure that you don't miss an episode, make sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or on Android. My guest today is Ross Pederson. Ross is a gifted drummer, producer, composer and arranger. Ross has been described as: “an explosive, yet sensitive, dynamic and compelling voice on the drum set”, which also fits his personality...except for maybe the explosive part! He shares his early musical influences from his parents, his Mom was a piano teacher, his Dad taught him to play trumpet at 5 years old, the lure of his older brother’s drum set, and the incredible experiences he had at UNT, playing with the One O’Clock Lab Band. Ross has lived in NYC, for the past 9 years, performed and/or toured with Lew Soloff, Kenny Werner, Patti Austin, Chris Potter, Jean Michele Pilc, Francois Mouton, Richard Bona, Rufus Reid, Mark Egan, Oz Noy, Marc Johnson, Patricia Barber, The Manhattan Transfer, and Grace Kelly, to name a few. I am blessed to have Ross as my son-in-law, and in our conversation, I encouraged him to share the sweet, romantic story of his first date with my daughter, Julia. Ross has traveled the world, has been dedicated and disciplined about fitness, nutrition and health, and wholeheartedly, enthusiastically says YES to life! Enjoy the podcast!
