In Trinway, Ohio, sits the stately Prospect Place Estate—a 29-room mansion built in 1856 by abolitionist George Willison Adams. While originally constructed as a symbol of freedom and progress, today Prospect Place stands as one of Ohio's most haunted locations. Amy Green of the G.W. Adams Educational Center shares the fascinating—and chilling—history of the estate, from its role in the Underground Railroad to the whispers of lingering spirits. Visitors report everything from shadow figures, disembodied voices, and ghostly laughter, to the lingering scent of cigar smoke from the parlor where George Adams himself is still said to roam. Could the ghost of a bounty hunter still haunt the barn? And who is the little girl seen wandering the servants' quarters? Whether you come for the history or the haunts, one thing's for certain: Prospect Place leaves a lasting impression on the living and the dead. This is Part Two of our conversation. In this episode, we're uncovering ten of Ohio's most haunted locations, where history meets the supernatural. From eerie prisons to ghostly mansions, the Buckeye State has plenty of haunted tales to keep you up at night. So grab a cozy seat, turn down the lights, and join me as we explore the haunted side of Ohio. Featured Locations: Ohio State Reformatory 100 Reformatory Rd, Mansfield, OH 44905 The Ohio State Reformatory is also rumored to be haunted by a guard who once worked in the East Cell Block, where he was reportedly murdered by an inmate. The guard's ghost has been seen wandering the upper levels, and some visitors have experienced sudden cold spots and the sensation of being watched. Ghost tours of the Reformatory are known to provide EVP sessions and access to areas where paranormal activity is most intense. Moonville Tunnel Hope-Moonville Rd, McArthur, OH 45651 In addition to the railroad worker, some visitors have reported seeing the apparition of a man dressed in 19th-century clothing, believed to be one of the miners from the old town of Moonville. The area surrounding the tunnel is also known for strange misty figures that seem to materialize along the tracks, leading some to believe that the entire ghost town of Moonville might be haunted. Franklin Castle 4308 Franklin Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44113 Another haunting tied to Franklin Castle involves a ghostly child, believed to be the spirit of a Tiedemann child who died in the house. Visitors have reported hearing the sound of a child's laughter and feeling sudden drops in temperature. The secret rooms and passageways within Franklin Castle are also said to conceal a dark history, and some believe the castle's haunted reputation is tied to these hidden areas. Cincinnati Music Hall 1241 Elm St, Cincinnati, OH 45202 The Music Hall is also known for its phantom orchestra—guests have reported hearing the sound of an entire ensemble tuning up and playing music that seems to come from the walls themselves. During a late-night renovation, workers reported strange lights in the grand ballroom, as if a ghostly ball was being held in the empty space. Old Licking County Jail 46 S 3rd St, Newark, OH 43055 In addition to Carl Etherington's ghost, the jail is also haunted by the spirit of a former inmate who was believed to have been wrongfully convicted. Visitors to the jail report hearing the sound of sobbing and have seen a shadowy figure sitting in one of the cells, as if still awaiting release. Some investigators have captured eerie EVPs, with voices calling out for justice. Buxton Inn 313 E Broadway, Granville, OH 43023 Guests have also reported seeing a ghostly cat that roams the Buxton Inn, believed to have belonged to one of the inn's previous owners. The phantom feline is often spotted lounging by the fireplace, and guests sometimes feel a sudden, inexplicable warmth when it appears. The inn's basement is also rumored to be haunted, with reports of moving shadows and ghostly whispers. The Ridges (Athens Lunatic Asylum) 78 Hospital Dr, Athens, OH 45701 In addition to Margaret Schilling's ghost, some visitors report seeing shadowy figures in the old asylum's graveyard, where thousands of patients are buried in unmarked graves. Paranormal investigators have captured unusual readings and cold spots in the graveyard, which many believe is a hotspot for spiritual activity tied to the asylum's past. Lafayette Hotel 101 Front St, Marietta, OH 45750 The Lafayette Hotel is also known for sightings of a ghostly couple dressed in formal attire, believed to be guests who perished in one of the hotel's fires. Witnesses have seen the couple dancing in the hotel's ballroom, as if reliving a happier time. There have also been reports of old-fashioned music playing in the background, only for it to stop suddenly when someone enters the room. Majestic Theatre 45 E 2nd St, Chillicothe, OH 45601 The Majestic Theatre is also haunted by the spirit of a former performer who is said to linger in the backstage area, still preparing for his final curtain call. Staff have reported hearing the faint sound of a piano playing, as well as disembodied voices singing old show tunes, even when the theater is empty. The theater's dressing rooms are known for their eerie vibes, with makeup mirrors lighting up on their own. Prospect Place Mansion 12150 Main St, Trinway, OH 43842 Visitors to Prospect Place Mansion have also reported hearing the sound of horses' hooves and wagon wheels near the barn, where many enslaved people were hidden during their escape. Some say they've seen the apparition of George Adams himself, standing near the mansion's front door, keeping watch over the historic home. Paranormal investigators have captured strange anomalies in the barn, where a sense of unease often hangs in the air. Synlait could be going from the cream of the crop to skimming the edge of survival. Shareholders of the dairy processor are gathering at its Dunsandel site today to vote on a proposed $218 million capital raise. Board chair George Adams told Mike Hosking his confidence is high, and it would allow Synlait to move forward from the de-leveraging. He says they'll then focus on drawing their farmers back and delivering good business. If voted down, Synlait has warned it will end up in some sort of insolvency process. We chat with George Adams, the chairman of distressed milk company Synlait ahead of shareholders voting on a capital rescue package. Adams is intent on saving this second tier player in the export dairy industry, and tells us why there are opportunities it can pursue that are different to those chased by Fonterra. He's pragmatic about the challenge of raising three and a half times Synlait's market capitalization, and the fact minority shareholders will have their holdings diluted by more than half, in favour of larger shareholders including a2 Milk. And who knew adult milk products (not infant) and cream (the shelf-stable variety) are the way of the future? China's Bright Dairy's committing to pay 60 cents per share for $185 million of stock to lift its stake of the company to 65.3%. Board chair George Adams says it's critical for Synlait's future - after it told the Australian securities exchange more than half of its 280 suppliers want to leave in June. Adams told Mike Hosking the farmers' cessation notices were a message to the business as they take two years to take effect. He says he's thrilled for their group of loyal farmers. We start with an email we received from a Catholic in Quebec and a new litner from France that we met on our recent Church history tour. In this episode we discuss the following quote from Joseph Smith "If a man commit adultery, he cannot receive the celestial kingdom of God. Even if he is saved in any kingdom, it cannot be the celestial kingdom." We discuss where this quote comes from, the context of the quote, and Gerrit shares a story about George Adams having a child through an adulterous relationship and the statement from Joseph Smith when George repents and comes back to the Church Just in case there is any confusion the Standard of Truth Podcast takes a very strong position against adultery, and we would like to refer you to President Hinckley's April 1991 conference address on the matter (in addition to the 295 conference addresses on the topic since 1850): https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1991/04/what-god-hath-joined-together?lang=eng#p1 Sign up for our free monthly email: https://standardoftruthpodcast.substack.com If you have any questions or possible topics of discussion for upcoming podcasts, please email us at: questions@standardoftruthpodcast.com

George Adams curator, gallery director and collector has had a career in the visual arts in Sydney supporting and encouraging emerging artists. Together with his partner artist Ron Adams, George set up and ran MOP Gallery from 2003-2016, an ‘artist-run-initiative' which gave emerging artists, curators and writers the opportunity to explore experimental ideas and new work. Its follow on, Galerie Pompom shifted George's focus but not his passion for supporting artists. Though Galerie Pompom closed in late 2021, George's contribution to supporting experimental art in Sydney is lasting. Galerie Pompom's website is still live here, showcasing its exhibitions and project. While most vascular events seem to happen in winter versus summer, fun in the sun can impact your vascular health, increasing your morbidity and mortality. So, during episode five of The Heart of Innovation, co-hosts Emmy Award-winning Journalist Kym McNicholas and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. John Phillips are joined by Interventional Cardiologist Dr. George Adams, Director of Cardiovascular & Peripheral Research at Rex Hospital in North Carolina, to talk about who is most at-risk of weathering from the summer heat and how to mitigate that risk. We hear the broken record to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate on hot days. But on this show we talk about why it's important. Dr. Phillips explains that when our body heats up, normally we sweat as the primary means of helping our body control its temperature. But dehydration impairs this process and can lead to heat stroke, heat exhaustion, even heart attack. Dr. Adams adds that those with Peripheral Artery Disease, restricted blood flow in mainly the legs due to plaque build-up, dehydration can also lead to increased claudication, or leg cramps, stopping you in your tracks. They both contend that adding fluid with electrolytes is important, making sure your choice beverage is not high in sugar or sodium, will help reduce risk of dehydration. The Way To My Heart's Nurse Practitioner Kay suggests tonic water as well, especially to reduce leg cramps. She advises not to ‘chug' it all at once, but to instead, sip it gradually throughout your exercise regiment and throughout the day. Did you know general medications you take for vascular issues and other ailments can also cause dehydration, reduce your body's ability to sweat, and increase your risk of sunburn? During the show Kym also mentions some of those as advised by The Way To My Heart's Pharmacy Advisor Dr. Avni Kardani. They include diuretics (water pills), allergy medications such as Benadryl and pseudophedrine, anti-depressants, blood thinners, drugs for arrythmia, NSAIDs, and even chemotherapy drugs. She suggests asking your physician or pharmacist these questions: Are the medications I'm taking putting me at greater risk of heat stroke? What are the steps I must take to mitigate my risk of heat stroke? How do I know if I'm having a heat stroke? What are the signs & symptoms? What should I do if I think I'm having a heat stroke? Several patients called in during the broadcast including Monique, Marcia, and Heidi who had specific questions about exercising more effectively during the summer months to reduce risk of injury, whether the heat can increase someone's risk of a heart attack if they have heavy plaque build-up in their coronary arteries, and if the heat plays a role in increased fatigue following a procedure to unblock arteries in the legs or heart during the summer months. Interventional Cardiologists' Dr. Phillips and Dr. Adams were able to help those patients during the LIVE broadcast. Patients are welcome to call-in LIVE during the show each Saturday starting at 11am PT, 1pm CT, 2pm ET to talk to a vascular specialist. The call-in number is: 1-888-367-5329. Tune into the show to learn more about the summer heat and vascular health. Also, you don't want to miss this week's Save My Piggies segment as Bill from Ohio shares his story of perseverance using walking as medicine when doctors told him there was no other surgical option that wasn't high-risk for him. You will be inspired by his ability to improve his vascular health with every step he takes! Dr. Phillips and Dr. Adams explain why this is possible by discussing the mechanism of action by which walking can increase circulation.

The Adams brothers of SA Recycling joined the podcast to talk about what makes their company tick. As CEO of SA, George Adams is one of the most known faces in the recycling industry today, and his love for expansion has been a significant factor in what keeps the company growing. As Director, Terry Adams, on the other hand, handles much of the legal and environmental responsibilities that keep SA safe and prosperous. While these specific duties help SA flourish, the brothers agree that leadership, positive contribution, and staying proactive are what can overall keep a company in business.

As we conclude our tribute to the 100th Birthday Anniversary of bassist/composer/band leader Charles Mingus, we present tonight's very long Jazz Feature. It is a concert by what many believe is his last great band. The concert takes place in Bremen, Germany at Postaula, a concert venue, on July 9,1975. The band and most of the repertoire was heard on two Atlantic Records albums "Changes 1 & 2" but on the studio recordings some of the tunes had to be edited for space. This doesn't occur here as they were in concert and there are no edits. Hence the length of tonight's Jazz Feature. The band consists of Jack Walrath on trumpet (the only living member), George Adams on tenor saxophone, Don Pullen on piano, Dannie Richmond on drums and Mingus. Each tune is given a long exploration and is one of the most compelling and exciting Mingus performances from this period. Check it out tonight as our Jazz Feature, you won't regret it!

The boys are back for this one too! Malcom and Chuck are back to hear more stories from us. Krys leads off with Prospect Place House in Ohio also known as the Trinway Mansion. Built by George Adams in 1856 to house his family and new wife. Rumor was the ghost of his first wife was none too happy with the new wife and haunted his current house. This new house had some modern amenities before they were common. The first house they built was burned to ground by arson. Cue a second house being built and some shady business about who may have burned it down. Native American burial ground and a woman named Satan or a shady carpenter, you decide. Or perhaps it was the fact that George was an abolitionist with his brothers and ran the Underground Railroad through the house rather than the mill that the family owned? Rumors and stories abound about this house, even more shady goings on after George died and left the house to his daughter. Anna's husband disappeared and a detective was employed. Cue a sighting in San Francisco with an unidentified gentleman. The house changed hands several times and is now the sight of the G.W. Adams Educational Center which teaches about the Underground Railroad. Oh, did we mention this house was haunted? Sightings, sounds, and some tragic stories center around this housed. Tori follows up by crossing the pond and ends up in Ireland. Leap Castle in Coolderry, County Offaly. Most likely built by the O'Bannon clan in the 13th century, this castle has had a bloody history. The castle changed hands into the O'Carrol clan and may have been built on a Neolithic burial ground, you want ghosts… Brother fought brother and murder ensued. Leap Castle has gone through many hands through the years. The current owners are in the process of renovating the castle and restoring it. During this process the oubliette was found, thank you to the O'Carrol clan. This location just happens to be at the confluence of two ley lines. Fae? Nasty deaths? Regardless of the reason, this castle is haunted. What kind of ghost is Krys's favorite? Kid ghosts and many, many more. There seems to be an elemental that makes it's home in the castle and the land surrounding it as well. Magick is afoot here for sure.

Today is a bonus episode of the show! I recently travelled to South Carolina to take part in Sorinex's yearly Summer Strong event. It was an unreal weekend filled with great speakers, amazing food, and awesome people. I stayed in a house with several other guys, all of whom come from different strength backgrounds. When we got back to the house at 1:30 AM after everything wrapped up, we decided to record a podcast in the living room to recount our experience. Summer Strong is a special event for those that have never been, and the friendships made are worth the trip by itself. Joining me today are John Simmons, Jake Phillips, Taylor Quick, Brandon Langois, and George Adams. We were tired, wired, and a little loopy. So have fun following along to the extremely late night rambles. Enjoy! Episode 30 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with George Adams. George grew up in a small village in Scotland. He spent the first five years of his working life at an explosives factory, before deciding there must be more to life and self-funding himself through a degree in commerce and marketing, with the dream of writing and making TV drama at the BBC. Upon graduation, with limited job opportunities in Scotland, George headed to London to try his luck. He landed a job at the BBC through sheer luck and of course, the chutzpah to have a crack. George quickly worked his way up the ranks, and before long was network executive on dozens major telemovies, A Foreign Field starring Alec Guinness, Jean Moreau and Lauren Bacall, and others starring the likes of Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Albert Finney, Richard Harris and Gabriel Byrne. On leaving the BBC George joined Carlton TV as the Executive in Charge of Drama Production. Then several stints withe biggest players in the biz - VP & Head of Business Affairs & Production for the Columbia TriStar/Sony joint venture, Golden Square Pictures, next up Head of Drama Production at Granada UK (now ITVG) Whilst at ITV George guided TV shows including: Class Act starring Joanna Lumley, Sharpe starring Sean Bean, Rebecca starring Charles Dance, Diana Rigg and Faye Dunaway, Tough Love with Ray Winstone. Now married to an Aussie lass, George relocates to Australia to raise their kids. George’s credits down under include creating the award winning drama, Bed of Roses, which ran on the ABC for three seasons. EP of the movie Wolf Creek, which went on to be one of the most successful R rated Australian movies of all time. George then created and acted as both producer and show runner on Five series of Australia’s highest rating returning drama series year on year with The Doctor Blake Mysteries. A global hit, running in more than 130 territories including BBC1, Netflix USA. Other major credits included EP on BAFTA award winning UK drama Mrs Biggs and the 3D IMAX movie Hidden Universe. George has developed, produced, managed and controlled well in excess of $850M of TV drama production in the UK, Europe and Australia. Working in the screen industry is not for the faint of heart but George has managed to navigate a path with more ups than downs and keep his sense if humour intact. It is such a joy to receive letters from the readers of this warm thoughts column. Your comments are always greatly appreciated. I have learned that there are many who appreciate the art of poetry and essays. Recently, the following poetry thoughts came across my desk. I am not sure who wrote them, but they brought encouragement to my friend who shared these thoughts."It isn't the thing you do, dear,It's the thing you leave undoneThat gives you a bit of heartacheAt the setting of the sun.The tender word forgotten,The letter you did not write,The flowers you did not send,Are your hunting ghosts at night. The stone you might have liftedOut of your brother's way,The bit of hearthstone counselYou were hurried too much to say.The loving touch of the hand, dearThe gentle, winning toneWhich you have no time nor thought for,With troubles enough of your own. These little acts of kindness,So easily out of mind,Those chances to be angels,Which we poor mortals find. They come in night and silence,Each sad reproachful wraith,When hope is faint and flaggingAnd a chill has fallen on faith.Life is all too short, dearAnd sorrow is all too great,To suffer our slow compassionThat tarries until too late. And it isn't the thing you do, dear,It's the thing you left undoneWhich gives you a bit of a heartacheAt the setting of the sun.”It was George Adams who said, "We should seize every opportunity to give encouragement." In the twenty-first-century, Dr. George Adams sacrifices his house, company, and marriage to create artificial general intelligence, AGI. He creates AGI to solve the world’s problems: war, disease, climate change, inequality, and death. And The One solves all of these—for a price. The One’s solution will cost George—and every person in the world—that which is deemed most precious. After The One brings heaven to earth, and answers everyone’s prayers, should it be stopped? How can anyone halt something that is everywhere at the same time? Is it possible to reason with an all-knowing sentient entity whose raison d’etre is to solve all of humanity’s problems, including the existence of the soul? Sometimes the boys just can't agree. This is one of those times. Two new selections split them down the middle (though they at least "like" both selections), while one of the two oldies drives poor Mike (and Mike's family) up the proverbial wall (or is that escalator?) Carla Bley (and poet Paul Haines) – ESCALATOR OVER THE HILL; Matt Ulery – POLLINATOR; Mathis Sound Orchestra – WORLD UNITY; George Adams – AMERICA. Odd crooner Scott Walker and the Giles Martin remix of Abbey Road are the focus of pop matters.

Trombonist Craig Harris was an aspiring student in the early Seventies when he encountered Charles Mingus’s then-current quintet. Mingus had a trio of young incendiary devices— pianist Don Pullen, tenor man George Adams and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett— playing with him and his stalwart drummer, Dannie Richmond. This did not sound like Goodbye Pork Pie Hat! What happened on stage was unprecedented free improvisation with all of the craft and imagination of Mingus’s greatest bands. Craig Harris was hooked: he knew what he needed to do and he has been doing it ever since. He waited for that band to make a record but they never did. Craig has been waiting for the emergence of that music for 40 years. It’s time.

With SA Recycling being one of the largest and most successful privately-owned scrap recycling companies in the United States, SA President and CEO George Adams knows the ins and outs of what makes this industry tick. In Part 2 of “Scrap Legends: SA Recycling” George sits down with John Sacco to discuss the difficulties in finding laborers, the effects the trade wars with China have had on the scrap business, and what it was like being an officer for ISRI.
As one of the largest and most successful privately-owned scrap recycling companies in the United States, it has taken years of patience, perseverance, and hard work for SA Recycling to officially claim its name to fame. George Adams, SA President and CEO, sits down with John Sacco to talk further about his time in law school, the attempt to accommodate California’s strict regulation laws, and the details behind SA’s past bankruptcy that turned out to benefit the company in the long run.
George Adams leads SA Recycling based in Anaheim, California. Don't think glass bottles and aluminum cans. Think shredded automobiles and old railroad tracks. He's grown the company to over $1B in sales and his employees LOVE him. He's a fan of bottom-up leadership: Let the employees who do the hard work make the suggestions for improvement, then follow their lead. His stories and examples clearly show he practices what he preaches.
I musicisti meritano di essere ..citati tutti: Lew Soloff, Shunzo Ono e Miles Evans (figlio di Gil), ..trombe, David Bargeron, tuba e trombone basso, George Lewis e Tom ..Malone, tromboni, John Clark, corno Francese, John Surman, sax baritono ..e sintetizzatore, Chris Hunter, sax alto e sax soprano, George Adams, ..sax tenore e voce, Gil Goldstein, tastiere, Peter Levin e Delmar Brown, ..tastiere e voce, Urszula Dudziak, voce, Emily Mitchell, arpa, Mark Egan, ..basso elettrico, Danny Gottlieb, batteria, Anita Evans (moglie di Gil), ..percussioni, Gil Evans, direzione e tastiere.

I musicisti meritano di essere ..citati tutti: Lew Soloff, Shunzo Ono e Miles Evans (figlio di Gil), ..trombe, David Bargeron, tuba e trombone basso, George Lewis e Tom ..Malone, tromboni, John Clark, corno Francese, John Surman, sax baritono ..e sintetizzatore, Chris Hunter, sax alto e sax soprano, George Adams, ..sax tenore e voce, Gil Goldstein, tastiere, Peter Levin e Delmar Brown, ..tastiere e voce, Urszula Dudziak, voce, Emily Mitchell, arpa, Mark Egan, ..basso elettrico, Danny Gottlieb, batteria, Anita Evans (moglie di Gil), ..percussioni, Gil Evans, direzione e tastiere.
Tonight TWO (count 'em) TWO Jazz Features. One is the celebration of Duke Ellington's Birthday Anniversary today (April 29) with his epic "Far East Suite". A suite of 9 movements celebrating Duke's tour of the Middle and Far East. Recorded in December of 1966. Most of the key members of the Ellington Orchestra are here and playing at their peak: Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Cootie Williams, Jimmy Hamilton and of course Duke himself. This is a great recording and and on the the pinnacles of Ellington's later career. The second Jazz Feature celebrates albeit belatedly the Birthday Anniversary of Charles Mingus. He was born on Earth Day (April 22, 1922). Tonight we will hear what is his arguably "last great quintet" recorded in concert in Bremen, Germany on July 9, 1975. Mingus, who succumbed to ALS was still in fine health with this great band composed of Jack Walrath (trumpet), George Adams (tenor saxophone), Don Pullen (piano) Mingus on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. This is a well recorded and rather amazing concert and is NOT available on commercial records and discs. There it is, the Jazz Show's TWO great Jazz Features. Don't miss them!

Fatback Band - Backstrockin' Edit By Petko Turner The Fatback Band (later, simply Fatback) is an American funk and disco band. Most popular in the 1970s and 1980s, The Fatback Band is most known for their R&B hits, "(Do The) Spanish Hustle", "I Like Girls", "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)", "Backstrokin'" and "I Found Lovin". Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is sometimes considered the first hip hop single. Formed in New York City in 1970, The Fatback Band was the concept of Bill Curtis, an experienced session drummer, inspired to merge the "fatback" jazz beat of New Orleans into a funk band. In addition to Curtis, the band's initial line-up included guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, trumpet player George Williams, saxophonist Earl Shelton, flautist George Adams, and keyboardist Gerry Thomas. The band specialized in playing "street funk". The group also later included conga player Wayne Woolford, vocalists Jayne and Gerry, Deborah Cooper saxophonist Fred Demerey, guitarist Louis Wright and George Victory. The Fatback Band signed to Perception Records and had a hit single that summer with "Street Dance". The single reached the Top 30 on the US Billboard R&B chart, but failed to cross over to the pop chart, a pattern the group would follow for the rest of their career. The band released the albums Let's Do It Again, People Music, and Feel My Soul before signing to Event Records in 1974. In the mid-1970s, the band incorporated jazz elements and moved more towards a disco sound resulting in the singles, "Keep On Steppin'", "Yum, Yum (Give Me Some)", and "(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop". The singles proved popular in dance clubs, but did not do as well on R&B chart until the spring of 1976 when "(Do The) Spanish Hustle" came close to the Top Ten. "(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop" birthed the development of line dancing.[citation needed] Now recording for Spring/Polydor, the group continued with the singles, "Party Time", "The Booty", and "Double Dutch". Late 1977 brought a name change to Fatback, and in 1978 they found their first Top Ten single with "I Like Girls". The song "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is often considered to be the first commercially released rap single, having shipped just a week before The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" in October 1979.[2] In 1980, Fatback had a pair of their biggest hits with "Gotta Get My Hands On Some (Money)" and "Backstrokin'". Also finding the charts in the 1980s were "Take It Any Way You Can't It", "I Found Lovin'", and "Spread Love", with singer Evelyn Thomas, in 1985. Whilst American pop success proved elusive, the group made regular appearances in the UK Singles Chart, including the Top Ten twice with "(Do The) Spanish Hustle" and "I Found Lovin'".[3] Keyboardist Gerry Thomas was simultaneously a member of The Jimmy Castor Bunch, so the band elected to remain close to the New York area instead of extensive touring. They had substantial success in South America, especially in Brazil (with "Money", and "Backstrokin'").

Tonight's Jazz feature is a long one but worth the listening effort as it is a very rare live performance by what this author considers to be Charles Mingus' last great band. This band recorded a wonderful double album set on Atlantic records in December 1974 called "Changes 1 and Changes 2" but this is a live performance by the very same band and it truly captures the energy and power of this band. The personnel is Jack Walrath (trumpet), George Adams (tenor saxophone), Don Pullen (piano), Dannie Richmond (drums) and of course Mr. Charles Mingus on bass. It was recorded in Bremen, Germany on July 9, 1975. The tunes are long and these unedited performances capture the band at it's inspired best. Mingus at this time was enjoying a period of re-discovery and a restoration of his power and musical authority before feeling the first effects of the ALS which took hold the following year and led to his passing at age 58 on January 5,1979. Mingus forever!
This is arguably Charles Mingus' last great recording. It was done at two separate sessions. One composition was done in 1976 with his working band of the time with Jack Walrath (trumpet), George Adams (tenor saxophone), Danny Mixon (piano) and of course Dannie Richmond on drums and Mingus on bass. The band was augmented by some fine Italian musicans as well. The piece was to be used in a film called "Todo Modo" but alas for a variety of complex reasons it wasn't used in the film but we have the music. That is the first selection. The second called "Cumbia and Jazz Fusion" was recorded the following year (1977) and the first indications of ALS (undiagnosed) was happening to Mingus. Regardless, the composition showed Mingus' appreciation for what we now call "world music". It features his last regular band with Walrath, Richmond and Ricky Ford (tenor saxophone), Bob Neloms (piano) augmented by a few others like Jimmy Knepper on trombone etc. It's a fascinating musical excursion into the mind of Mingus and the music ranges from exotic to straight swing with some satire, politics and ribald humor and anger all rolled into one piece. Mingus' music continues to be some of the most compelling in American Jazz and this is one of his last great statements. Mingus died on January 5, 1979.
This band was one of the most innovative and exciting groups of the 1980's. It's beginnings happened in what many consider to be Charles Mingus' last great band. In that band was tenor saxophonist/vocalist George Adams, pianist Don Pullen and of course, drummer Dannie Richmond plus trumpeter Jack Walrath and Mingus. Pullen left the Mingus band after a musical dispute with the leader and Adams left a while later to work with Gil Evans and McCoy Tyner, After Mingus' death in January 1979, Adams, Pullen and Richmond decided to form a band along with bassist Cameron Brown for tours and gigs. This became one of the most sought after bands of the 1980's. They recorded for various small European labels and finally with the release of tonight's Feature: "Breakthrough!" on Blue Note, their first domestically recorded album. One more followed, called "Song Everlasting" and that was it for Blue Note. The recordings were soon deleted and hard to find, yet this band always drew long line-ups at any place that they played. They continued to perform until the untimely death in 1988 of drummer Dannie Richmond. The two Blue Note albums are once again available on a Mosaic set at www.mosaicrecords.com. This recording captures some of the creativity and drive of this amazing band and The Jazz Show is proud to present this important document now that Adams, Pullen and Richmond are no longer with us.
