Today's topic is handling clients with unrealistic expectations. As a digital marketing freelancer, dealing with clients who have unrealistic expectations can be a challenging and frustrating experience. In this solo pep talk episode, I discuss a rejection letter received by a workgroup member from a business owner who was overly focused on perfectionism. I break down how you're allowed to see red flags during a discovery call and say no if it's not a good fit. While it's beneficial to have marketing assets as a freelancer, like a website and social media, you don't have to have huge follower and engagement numbers. Clients need to look beyond superficial details and understand the value of adding a versatile digital marketer to their team. Copywriting Series #6 Is your end goal to be an expert and NOT a worker bee? Then listen up. You have to be able to talk about your services in a way that attracts clients. And that's the backbone of copywriting, and exactly why you need to invest time and energy into learning the marketing conversation. It's not about blowing your own horn. It's about making your value clear and understood. And then standing in that value so that people want to pay you top dollar to do what you're really good at. Our guest today — Michelle Hunter — will teach you how to articulate this value in writing. Michelle is a copywriter and content marketing strategist. For years she owned a successful six-figure creative agency with a virtual team where she helped clients refine their messaging, and write website and email copy. In this episode, she humbly brags about her $300/hr bill rate and 10k copywriting projects so that you can see the possibilities for yourself. But you won't find her on social, because she recently took a cush corporate job as a Communications Director. Listen to this episode to learn: The copywriting methodology that convinces people to do what you want (use these powers for good now!) How to communicate about your price & what to say if they think you're too expensive Two keys to writing that you'll have to conquer How to be confident that your copy converts I know you'll relish her honesty, and after listening, my hope is you'll see this opportunity to better market your (and your clients') services and run with it. Copywriting Series #5 The popular persuasion principles used in sales copywriting can be used to convince people to buy a program that's not the right fit or spend thousands of dollars they don't have. As digital marketing assistants and specialists, we don't want this for our clients or ourselves. It's unethical, it's bad for business, and it's just gross. That's why copywriter Tarzan Kay is here to break down what she's learned about coercive sales and email strategies since building her 7-figure copywriting business, and why she tore it all down. Tarzan Kay teaches email marketing skills to online businesses, digital course creators, and freelance service providers. She came up in her career writing copy for popular programs in the online marketing space, and very soon created her own programs teaching business owners how to write story-powered emails. Now she's a leader in revealing how the use of Cialdini's principles of persuasion can cause harm, especially in the coaching industry. She has now dedicated her work to undoing that harm, and teaching sales strategies that leave space for conversation and critical thinking. We are covering a lot in this episode from email marketing and sequences to storytelling sequences and style sheets. You'll walk away with: The promo email you can't live without Why inbox management is a crucial responsibility The data point that Tarzan evaluates the success of her nurture emails What should be in your client's brand voice guide that you probably forgot Audio-email strategy Tarzan uses weekly How to be inclusive in your copywriting You'll want to listen to this episode so you're in the loop on your client's behalf. You can make sure they're not using coercive copywriting and unconscious bias in their marketing. It really does start with us and the copy we put out; we can be leaders with our clients. Copywriting Series #4 Laura “effing” Belgray is known for writing the only emails you'll ever read. In a noisy digital age where open rates are dropping, lists are shrinking, and email inboxes are flooded and abandoned, Laura's emails get the Holy Grail of opens and clicks. How does she do it? By adding personality. Today, she'll break down how to add personality to your copy (and your clients') so that your subscribers, followers, and fans actually want to read your stuff. And buy too. Her writing tricks will help you stand out in the crowded marketplace of digital service providers and actually get your clients results. (And if your clients have success, you have success! As a digital marketing unicorn, you know it's important to use stories in your content. But what happens when you're in that moment, staring at a blank google doc, waiting for inspiration? That moment when you need content and you can't think of a good story… Stories have been around for thousands of years. Stories make it more likely for our brains to absorb teachable moments. When it comes to marketing, potential buyers are trying to answer two key questions: Do you have what I want and are you the person I want to do business with? Stories help us highlight the “slice of life” moments that build a connection with your audience. In the first episode of my series all about Copywriting, I'm sitting down with CEO and Founder of the Copy Confidence Society, Marisa Corcoran. In addition to writing the words that get landing pages converting at 60% (or higher!) and crafting personality-filled emails, Marisa helps coaches and creatives craft their uncopyable message. Marisa is here to teach us how to “strip down” a story, or reverse engineer your storytelling. Tune in to this episode so the next time you're stuck waiting for inspiration you have a proven formula for a winning story! After losing her second born child, she strives to find joy and gratitude in each day. A self proclaimed book junkie and diet culture drop out, she strives to help other women THRIVE! In this episode we discuss. 1) The process of writing for Michelle, how it was a real deep dive into her story and she ended up writing about a different story than she originally planned. Michelle shares her story of losing her stillbirth son, Cameron. 2) The impact of shame on ourselves, how we spend our lives not showing emotions, avoiding emotions such as anger, resentment, sadness, and how we can't numb the emotions. We end up numbing ourselves to everything. 3) It was Michelle's gratitude practice that allowed her to be present, to heal inside, to look for answers from within as opposed to from external places. Her practices allowed her to release the shame and blame and process the grief which only helps the healing process. Michelle's growth journey of self-worth and being enough is so powerful and so many women will relate to it. This episode is brought to you by our sponsor, ContentSnare Anyone who has ever worked with clients to create their website can tell you that the hardest part of the process tends to be getting the content from the client to put into the website. My guest today, Christine Thatcher, and her business partner, Michelle Hunter, have solved this problem and are now showing other people how to do the same. What's fun is that I connected with Christine through our mutual friend (and sponsor of this podcast episode), James Rose of ContentSnare. One of the things that I was most excited about when Christine explained the Content Bottleneck Course to me was that they've created wireframes for client content (many people are familiar with wireframes for websites, but not for getting client content). We also talked about the soon-to-be-released Designing to Delight Course, which will help you "Master the Art of Drama-Free-Design" (I wish I had this when I was doing websites!). Questions I Asked Christine Before we get into your content course and design course, can you share your background with the listeners? How long have you been doing client work? What made you decide to step into course creations? How did you decide what to create for the design course (who was this for)? What made you decide to create the content course? Can you share a little bit about what the content course consists of? When are your courses available? What You're Going to Learn What Christine's biggest challenge was when she created her first course How she decided to price her course What her students say is the biggest shift after having taken her course The importance of leading the client through the design process How she collaborated with her business partner, Michelle Hunter, to create 'Say Goodbye To Content Bottlenecks" Why she moves her content due date to the middle of the project Get the Courses & Join the Facebook Group Designing to Delight Sat Goodbye to Content Bottlenecks Drama Free Design Collective Where to Connect with Christine Website | Facebook | Instagram
