Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
For our latest Artemis Live interview we wanted to dive into a hot topic, inflationary pressures, material prices and labour costs and how this could play into catastrophe claims for the insurance, reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) industry in 2021. Inflation is big news currently, with some economists expecting a sustained period of price increases and inflationary pressures around the world. There are several factors causing this, some specific to different locations and regions of the world. But for the insurance, reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) market, materials, labour and other costs have in some cases risen significantly, which has ramifications for catastrophe events and possible loss amplification to claims. To help me dive deeper into this issue, I spoke with two senior Verisk Analytics executives with years of experience on the claims-side of the market, Mike Fulton, President of Xactware and Tom Johansmeyer, Head of PCS. Fulton explained the current situation, "We're in new territory. This has not happened in the past, even in my thirty years in the business. "We're seeing inflation in several areas, some of that is significant and we certainly expect additional inflationary growth in both material and labour for the near-term." Johansmeyer explained that this is a particularly hot-topic for the industry at this time, "It's interesting, because we've been getting calls about this for almost a year now." He advised market participants ensure they have the access to data that's required to help in understanding how inflationary pressures could play into catastrophe claims. "It's important to look at PCS alongside Xactware, because we'll (PCS) tell you what the cat is doing, we'll help you understand what your portfolio is doing. But as you dig into that, it's the granularity that you see with Xactware, which is literally as close to the risk as you can get, that provides those sorts of insights." This interview features a discussion of what these inflationary pressures mean and how reinsurance and ILS market participants may deal with the effects of it, including hedging, retrocession and other portfolio management opportunities.
On this episode of FNO: InsureTech, we talk with Mike Fulton, President of Xactware. Once again, Rob and Lee sit down and talk with return guest Mike Fulton to talk Xactware. It’s been over a year since their last conversation (Episode 64, published February 28, 2020) and we are excited to catch up with Mike and hear what’s happened, what’s happening, and what the future holds for Xactware. Join Mike, Rob, and Lee as they discuss: Elevate 2021 and the shift to a virtual experience; finding the balance between leading and following in the industry; the continued advancement of innovation and integration; and more.
Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
For our latest Artemis Live interview we wanted to take a deep-dive into into the recent severe winter weather and deep freeze event that affected a significant proportion of the United States in February, hitting Texas particularly hard. Early estimates suggested the potential for the insurance and reinsurance market, including insurance-linked securities (ILS) funds, to face losses of $15bn to $20bn. Over the last couple of weeks estimates have been coming down slightly, as greater clarity on the losses emerged, particularly with some reporting from the major nationwide insurance carriers most exposed in Texas. To help me dive deeper into the insurance claims environment related to this event, we invited two senior Verisk Analytics execs with years of experience on the claims-side of the market, Mike Fulton, President of Xactware and Tom Johansmeyer, Head of PCS to this interview. The pair explained why the winter storm and freezing weather does not seem to be driving an insurance and reinsurance industry loss as high as early predictions had suggested. But Fulton of Xactware also explained the scale of the claims deluge his firm's systems saw coming in, with huge numbers of claims seen flowing from Texas and the surrounding area. Fulton said that a typical February might see around 400,000 claims in Xactware's systems from across the US, but in 2021 the company saw nearly a million claims assignments logged. "More than half of those (claims) being from freezing weather and burst pipes," Fulton explained. "Roughly 30% of those 1 million claims, were due to what we believe to be freeze claims in Texas alone. "So the impact when comparing to a normal year, for the personal lines market, was really significant." We also discussed business interruption and the Johansmeyer of PCS said that the BI component of this winter storm loss hasn't manifested to the degree some feared, although some BI claims are anticipated.

In our latest episode, we had the chance to sit down with one of our newer developers, Kaleb Porter. At only 23, Kaleb is making quite the name for himself. He is an avid open-source contributor and was once quoted saying, “Python is perfection.” Kaleb has only been with IBM for two years, but in that time, he's poured his heart and soul into the Z mainframe. With one patent already under his belt, he's only getting started. Kaleb sure does like to stay busy too; he's an avid writer on Medium. There he writes about his time in Z, and some of the really amazing things you can do with the most recent offering he is working on: Z Open Automation Utilities. What is Z Open Automation Utilities (ZOA Utilities)? ZOA Utilities supports the execution of automation tasks on z/OS via Java, Python, and Shell commands. Previously, developers programming in their native tongue (Python or Java in this case) would in some cases have to enter the ISPF 3270 terminal, use Job Control Language (JCL) to submit a job, and then return to the work they were doing in their IDE or Shell. It can be very challenging to get work done if you don't have somebody around who is knowledgeable in JCL. Now, in a matter of seconds newer Z developers can continue to deliver value to the enterprise at the speed of Z. So, that's the (very abridged) background. Kaleb actually has a few pretty neat use cases that he's documented; and they can be found on his Medium page. We were really fortunate to be able to sit down with Kaleb and learn what the world of Z is like through the eyes of a newer developer. And if you want to learn a little more about ZOA Utilities, we are providing a few links to peruse over morning coffee (or afternoon “Tea, Earl Grey, hot.”): Background, how it works, benefits IBM ZOA Utilities article by Mike Fulton, DE Part I IBM ZOA Utilities article by Mike Fulton, DE Part II Visit ibm.developer.com to read the full transcript.

Hey there Punky Peeps, I'm your host Angela Bowen of Punky Power: An Unofficial Punky Brewster. Today I'll be discussing S2E18: Changes Part 2 which aired on February 9, 1986. In this episode just as Henry was planning to adopt Punky, a Fenster Hall bureaucrat named Simon P. Chillings rescinds his custody citing his age, his illness, and his lack of a steady income. Mike Fulton tries to change his mind but to no avail. Time for the Brandon Tail Wag Episode Rating: I'm giving this episode 5 out of 5 Brandon Tail Wags 1. Punky giving Henry Balloons as a get well gift 2. Brandon visiting Punky in Fenster Hall 3. Mike going to bat for Punky as he battles it out with Simon Chillings over Punky's care. 4. Henry being the go getter and wanting to get out of the hospital bed and get to Punky, but unfortunately his ulcer decides he's not going anywhere as he clutches his side in pain. 5. Punky and Henry's conversation on the phone. Punky's Principles This is in Henry's case if you are recuperating in the hospital your main focus should be getting well. Leaving before your condition has been evaluated and you've been properly discharged by your doctor is just going to result in you being in the hospital longer and add to your recovery time. In other words not good Also stay for the end of the podcast and you can hear one of my loyal Punky Pal listeners gives her opinions on the first two Changes episodes. Later this week I will be covering Punky Brewster S2E19: Changes Part 3 which aired on February 16, 1986. In this episode Punky's friends visit her at Fenster Hall. Hoping that Simon Chillings won't notice (and by taking his glasses), Margaux impersonates Punky so that the real Punky can visit Henry in the hospital. I want to give a sincere thank to all you listeners out there whether you listen to this podcast on Itunes or Soundcloud or any other listening platforms that you may use to hear this podcast. I love giving you the episode recaps of Punky Brewster every week joining me as I go into full detail describing her many adventures and shenanigans with Henry, Brandon and her friends as well as my occasional running commentary and childhood stories. Merry Christmas Punky Peeps, I hope everyone had an amazing day and got everything they asked for under the tree and now you’re spending a nice evening at home with family and friends. Welcome to another episode of Punky Power: An Unofficial Punky Brewster Podcast. I’m your host Angela Bowen. Today I’ll be covering the first of a 5 part episode arc entitled S2E17: Changes Part 1 which aired on February 2, 1986. In this episode Henry's studio burns down; with no insurance and a mountain of bills he can't pay, he suffers a bleeding ulcer and is hospitalized. Join me tomorrow when I continue with Punky Brewster S2E18 Changes Part 2 which aired on February 9, 1986. In this episode just as Henry was planning to adopt Punky, a Fenster Hall bureaucrat named Simon P. Chillings rescinds his custody citing his age, his illness, and his lack of a steady income. Mike Fulton tries to change his mind but to no avail. I want to give a sincere thank to all you listeners out there whether you listen to this podcast on Itunes or Soundcloud or any other listening platforms that you may use to hear this podcast. Hey there Punky Peeps, This time around I’ll be discussing two serious episodes the first one is S2E8: Just Say No which aired on October 27, 1985 and this is the episode that dealt with Punky and Cherie being offered drugs by a group of 5th grade girls who call themselves the Chiclets, yes just like the candy. Time for my Brandon Tail Wag Episode Rating: I’m giving this episode 5 out of 5 Brandon Tail Wags 1. For approaching the subject of the temptation of drug use in a way that wasn’t too scary for young kids but gave a positive message. 2. For showing Punky and Cherie so eager to join an older girls group that they began to mimic their dress and slang and how easily the older girls had influence over Punky and Cherie and showing Punky and Cherie trying hard to resist the urge to try drugs. 3. For Henry and Betty vetoing the idea of Punky and Cherie hanging out with 6th graders being they’re 9 years old. This was before Chiclets were revealed to be drug users. 4. For Mike being the kind of teacher that Punky could turn to in a tough situation especially when she was afraid to come to Henry on the matter of being tempted to take drugs. Mike was open and honest with her and explaining peer pressure to her and giving her the Just Say No booklet. 5. For the end montage showing Henry and Betty getting involved with the kids for the Just Say No Campaign. I really wish we could have seen Punky and Cherie tell Henry and Betty about the whole drug temptation, sure they’d get mad, but at least they’d be made aware of what’s going on. In S2E9: The Search which aired on November 10, 1985. In this episode Punky has something in common with her teacher, Mike Fulton: they were both abandoned by their mothers. They work together to try and find the whereabouts of their respective families. I’m giving this episode 5 out of 5 Brandon Tail Wags. 1. For the set up of the episode a classroom assignment of the family tree leading to Punky and Mike searching for their Moms. 2. For showing the Henry and Punky going through all the records searching for information and leading Punky to admit to Henry how much she misses her Mom, but at least one good thing came out of the search finding Mike’s Mom. 3. Punky taking it upon herself to go to Mike’s mom and convince her to see her son. She brings up her missing mom and how she would give anything to have one moment with her and she’d make that moment last forever. 4. Mike and his mom Lois meeting face to face and how sad and joyous it is all at the same time. They both learn some hard truths about each other. 5. Punky giving us an update on Mike meeting his new family and hoping one day she and her mom can be reunited, but also thanks God for Henry coming into her life. Join me next Sunday on October 22 when I discuss S2E11: The Gift which aired on November 24, 1985 in this episode Punky befriends the school janitor who, in spite of her learning disability, is a gifted violin player. And in S2E12: Milk Does A Body Good which aired on December 1, 1985. In this episode Punky and Cherie learn that a girl who moved into the building recently was kidnapped by her divorced father, and they are both living in the building under assumed names. Hey there Punky Peeps, Well, it’s October. Let’s kick off the Halloween Month with the two part special The Perils of Punky which aired on October 20, 1985. Before I get into the episode if you enjoy this podcast and you haven’t already, please go to Itunes and leave review and you'll get a shout out on the podcast. Also subscribe so you won’t miss an episode. You can even follow me on Soundcloud so’ll you’ll get notified when a new episode is uploaded. I love hearing from my listeners so if you’d like to reach out to me you can email me at punkypowerpbpodcast@gmail.com or you can follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter which you can access the links on the Soundcloud Punky Power Podcast Home Page. Each week I ask you the listeners questions regarding the episodes I review so you can get a shout out on the podcast if you comment or email me with a story or your response to the question. In the first of a two parter episode The Perils of Punky Part 1 Punky and the gang go on a camping trip. When the children get lost in a cave, Punky tells a ghost story about an evil spirit who threatens the lake. In The Perils of Punky Part 2 The children do battle with an evil spirit, when the ghost of an Indian princess appears to tell Punky that it must be fought with love. Now for my Brandon Tail Wag Episode Rating: I’m giving this episode 5 out of 5 Stars all the way. It was so spooky and good, perfect for the Halloween season. 1. I don’t know if the beginning at the lake was shot on location, but it’s cool to get them out of the apartment and into the woods. 2. Brandon chasing a rabbit leads them into the cave. Spooky set up. Reminds me of the beginning of Cujo. 3. Punky remarking on the dead trees and later when they meet the Chief he mentions how a curse has caused the land to die. This episode becomes a message about protecting the environment. 4. The spider in the tunnel jumping out and then later attacking Punky was freaky that would scare any kid. And the kids disappearing one by one and then showing up as a creepy face, and Brandon as a skeleton. Yikes. 5. Punky fighting the evil spirit with love as well as all the exploding fireworks. Mr. Pieces, he was a funny and cool guy. I like that he was there for the comedic relief. Punky’s Principles: What I got from the episode: It was definitely spooky for the kiddos, maybe a little too scary. I don’t know if this would air today, or if it would be deemed too scary for kids, reminded me of a Goosebumps episode. Lesson: don’t go into a cave by yourself no matter how fun you think it is, you could get lost and come face to face with something unexpected and you’re unprepared for. If you want to explore a cave there’s a place that has a tour guide called Carlsbad Caverns. Join me next week when I discuss two serious episodes S2E8: Just Say No the episode where Punky and Cherie are introduced to drugs when they are invited to join an older girls club called the Chicklets. What will they do? Is hanging with the older girls and becoming a member of the club worth it if you have to take drugs to be accepted? Listen to find out what happens. In S2E9: The Search Both Punky and her teacher Mike Fulton are out to discover the whereabouts of their mothers after a class assignment involving researching their family tree brings up some unexpected results. Will Punky and Mike finally get the answers they’ve been looking for? Listen to find out! Have a great week!!
Happy Monday Punky Day, How’s everyone doing? I’m so happy to be back home from vacation we got back on Thursday and now I can be back in front of the mic again recording new podcast episodes. Well Punky Peeps, We made it. YAY!! We’ve arrived at final two episodes of Season 1 of Punky Brewster. Where oh where has the time gone seems like only yesterday I was recording the introduction episode for the podcast way back in January. Thank you for coming along with me on this journey. Onward to Season 2 August 1. But before that we have a Season 1 Wrap up to complete first. With my 5 favorite episodes of Season 1, funniest moment, saddest moment, best Henry and Punky moment, best moment between Cherie and Punky, favorite Brandon moment etc. Let’s waste no time getting into these final two episodes and kick things off with Punky Brewster S1E21: Fenster Hall Part 1 which aired on March 31, 1985 and then we'll move on to Fenster Hall Part 2. Punky catches a boy breaking into her room and stealing from her. Henry takes the boy to Fenster Hall where Mike Fulton, one of the workers there, tries to bond with him. In Part 2 we see your T.C. unburden his troubled past to Mike and the other boys at Fenster Hall while also dealing with the dilemma of being tasked with taking the money from the upcoming Auction to give to thug Blade who had taken T.C. in and made him steal for him. Can T.C. learn that there are good people in the world who really care for him or will he resort to his old ways and not reform? Punky and his friends have their work cut out for them if they want to help T.C. change his ways for good. Listen to find out! Well, that’s it Punky Peeps we did it, we finished Season 1. Thank you so much for listening. Now it’s time for the Brandon Tail Wag Epsiode rating: It’s still a 5 point scale because I’m judging the episode as a whole because it aired all in the same night. I’m giving it 5 out of 5 Brandon Tail Wags 1. Mike’s introduction 2. Little Dash 3. T.C.’s tearful confession of his past. 4. T.C. and Dash’s hug 5. Mike lays down his life to spare T.C. Time for Punky’s Principles: What I learned from this two part episode: Don’t ever do what Punky did and go after a robber that steals from you. Also T.C. learned a valuable lesson that just because one adult let’s you down if life doesn’t mean all adults will. Also if you enjoy this podcast please rate, review and subscribe so you won’t miss an episode. The more rates and reviews this podcast gets the easier it is for other people to see it’s out there so tell your friends and family. This is a family friendly podcast to be listened to by all. Facebook: Punky Power: An Unofficial Punky Brewster Podcast Instagram: punkypbpodcast Twitter: punkypbpodcast Well, Punky Peeps, I’d say we ended the Season 1 chapter of Punky Brewster excellently. Join me next Monday as we close the book on Season 1 with a wrap up where I discuss my favorite episodes, main characters, side character’s who I miss and who I don’t I’m looking at you Scotty Laboochi, best Brandon moments, Punky’s clothing style, along with other things. Then the big day will arrive August 1st we get the K.O. Kid which aired on September 15, 1985. Right out of the gate we get a episode that deals with a topic kids still face today bullies. Well, I will let you all enjoy your week, so keep your ears open for the awesomeness that is coming with Season 2 next Tuesday. Keep on shining your Punky Power Peeps.
Hey there Peeps welcome to Monday, I know right, blah, but good news is I got another Punky Power episode for ya to start your Monday off right. Today I’m discussing S1E20 Gals and Dolls which aired on March 3, 1985. Well, whadda ya say we just jump right into this fun filled doll fever episode. In this episode Punky, Cherie, and Margaux all want a highly sought-after doll, but Henry can only find one of them at the toy store. Only one, wow I’m surprised one was even left. Sounds like the Tickle me Elmo craze of the early 90s. I just watched a video of the Cabbage Patch Doll Craze of Christmas 1983. Yikes, it made me think of Black Friday in 2016. Scary. I’m sorry to say no toy is worth dying over. Time for my Brandon Tail Wag of the episode I gave it 3 out of 5 Brandon Tail Wags. 1. For the awesome tent in the living room 2. Brandon with the playing card had me laughing 3. For the girls learning a valuable lesson about sharing and friendship I knocked off two tail wags for: 1. The adults (mainly Betty and Mrs. Kramer) acting as bad as the kids. Henry for getting the doll, if there was only one he should have gotten none or at least given the two ladies their money back. 2. Margaux for being a brat and a bully and also for Cherie for not standing up for herself against Margaux instead of siding with Punky. Time for Punky’s Principles: What I got from this episode: For me this episode showed how a friendship bond even one as strong as ketchup sisters can easily dissolve or unravel when put to the test three friends and one doll, someone was bound to get hurt. It also showed a little bit of bullying and intimidation on Margaux’s part. I’m not a fan of Margaux, but even for her that was going too far. And before you say they’re just young girls. They’re 8, that’s old enough to understand how that behavior can hurt someone’s feelings. Play nice or don’t play at all. That’s why everything is so PC politically correct in today’s society and they have anti bullying zones at school. I wish they had them when I was growing up. I loved the talk between Henry and Punky about friendship. Well this week I’m giving you more Punky Brewster cause we’re finishing out the season this week with Punky Brewster Season 1 Episodes 21 and 22 Fenster Hall Parts 1 and 2 which aired on March 15, 1985. This was a failed attempt at a spinoff to Punky Brewster about a foster center for orphaned and abandoned kids which would star T.K. Carter as Mike Fulton and a group of boys at Fenster Hall. I’m glad the show didn’t take off because otherwise we wouldn’t have Mike come on to Season 2 as Punky’s fourth grade teacher and teach Punky awesome life lessons and become a great friend to her. as well as Benji Gregory who went on to play young Brian Tanner BFF to friendly alien ALF on NBC’s hit show ALF in 1986. I wanted to get these done before I head out on my vacation next week and we’ll be geared up for Season 2 August 1st. Then I’ll do a fun Season 1 Wrap Up and A season Two Pre- show before August 1. Have a great week Punky Peeps, stay positive and let your Punky Power shine on for all those to see!! Here’s a fun tip for the week. Smile at a stranger or offer a friendly wave. As they say smiles are free so hand them out by the handful. Bye!!
