In this episode of The Ross Simmonds Show, Ross cuts through the overwhelming noise around AI in marketing to reveal what's real, what's useful, and what's pure hype. From AI-fueled content creation and personalization to ads, analytics, and the dangers of AI deepfakes, Ross shares his honest take on how marketers can harness AI effectively—without losing their creativity (or their jobs). Hint: AI isn't here to replace great marketers, but it will expose mediocre ones. Whether you're feeling FOMO about AI tools or tired from constant information overload, this episode offers grounded insights and an actionable roadmap for embracing AI in a sustainable and meaningful way. Key Takeaways and Insights: Understanding the Current AI Hype Cycle AI is at the peak of inflated expectations. Nearly every tool is rushing to add AI capabilities. $10B spent in AI implementation efforts by consulting firms. The opportunity is real—but so is the noise. Content Creation: The Draft, Not the Director Tools like ChatGPT, Jasper, Rytr, SEMrush, and HubSpot offer “okay” drafts. Great marketers use AI for first drafts, then add emotion, creativity, and data. AI helps compress content production time significantly. Key quote: “The AI tool is not your creative director.” Repurposing & Distribution at Scale One of the best use cases for AI in content marketing. Turn one podcast into dozens of social assets, short videos, quotes, etc. Old content can be brought back to life using AI. 24/7 brand promotion equals scale and efficiency. AI for Creating Visuals & Ads Tools now allow marketers to generate images and mock ads from product photos. Emerging use case: image creation with tools like ChatGPT's DALL·E. AI lowers cost and time for creative asset generation. AI-Powered Insights from Data AI can identify behavior trends, segment audiences, and support lead scoring. Automate personalized communications triggered by user behavior. In-depth AI-based customer feedback analysis is now possible. Reminder: "Good data = good AI." Personalization: Right Message, Right Time AI enables highly tailored emails, landing pages, and even video messages. Important: Avoid going too far or getting creepy with data usage. Balance personalization with ethics and relevance. The Fluff: SEO Snake Oil & “Turnkey” Strategies Beware of tools promising 10,000 blog posts and instant rankings. "Hallucination" risk with auto-generated content hurts SEO in the long run. One-click marketing strategy generators? Hard pass. Deepfakes & AI Influencers Increasing use of AI-generated personas to push products deceptively. Danger of consumers being misled by realistic but fake endorsements. The Future of Marketing & AI AI will not replace everyone—but will replace some. “It's a force multiplier for the great. A replacement for the mediocre.” Use AI to do more, faster—but don't skip thinking and strategy. To thrive, marketers must master the human elements: storytelling, empathy, strategy, and creativity. B. ProGlove, Flaschenpost, Magazino. - 2016–2017: Boomphase mit vielen Gründungen (u. a. Sennder, Forto/FreightHub). - 2020–2021: Höhepunkt mit Einhorn-Startups (Sennder, Forto), stark durch Corona beeinflusst. - Ab 2022: Deutlicher Rückgang – Insolvenzen (z. B. Convoy), Entlassungswellen, weniger Investments. B. Drohnen, autonome Fahrzeuge, IoT, humanoide Roboter). Between 2013 and 2023, cultivated meat companies raised a total of nearly $3 billion. In 2020, Singapore approved the world's first cultivated meat products, with the U.S. and Israel following close behind. But head to the meat department of any American grocery store today, and you won't find cultivated meat for sale. After short-lived restaurant tasting menus in the U.S., it's no longer available. Distribution in Singapore is growing but small, and no products have launched in Israel yet. So what happened to the high hopes for cultivated meat? And what comes next for the industry? In this episode, Shayle talks to Isha Datar, executive director of New Harvest, a non-profit focused on developing research in the industry. She has written blog posts arguing that the industry is in the start-up hype cycle's “trough of disillusionment.” She calls for focusing on basic research, targeting high-value products, and even adopting a different name — cellular agriculture — to signal a shift toward a broader set of biotech products and techniques. Shayle and Isha cover topics like: What went wrong with the first-generation startups focused on low-value, whole-meat products like beef and chicken Persistent challenges in the industry, like the siloing of expertise, scarcity of research funding, and lack of standardization Why she's hopeful about a more diverse second generation that's focused on high-value products like sashimi and foie gras and biotech ingredients like fetal bovine serum and cell culture media The cellular agriculture cost stack and the $30,000 batch of cookies Basic research, shared resources, and the standardization needed to bring down costs Recommended resources New Harvest: Where Are We On the Hype Cycle? Part I and Part II The Counter: Lab-grown meat is supposed to be inevitable. The science tells a different story. "AI is in a typical hype cycle—everyone is using it, but few understand how," said Ray Pasquale, Founder and CEO of Unified Office, in a discussion with Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, at ITExpo. In this podcast, Pasquale explains how AI adoption follows Gartner's S-curve, with an initial surge of enthusiasm, followed by disillusionment, before settling into practical, productive applications. He pointed out that many businesses adopt AI without a clear strategy simply because they feel pressured to do so. "Your boss asks, ‘What are we doing about AI?' and the answer is often just, ‘We're using ChatGPT,' without knowing how or why," he said. At Unified Office, Pasquale and his team aim to bypass the AI hype and focus on practical applications that drive real business outcomes. The company specializes in vertical market solutions, with a strong presence in the restaurant industry and other service-based sectors. A Unified Office customer in attendance at ITExpo underscored this approach, expressing appreciation for the company's ability to simplify complex AI challenges. Regulatory Uncertainty and the Future of AI Pasquale also addressed the regulatory challenges surrounding AI, including pending copyright lawsuits against OpenAI and concerns over how large language models (LLMs) are trained. "There are lawsuits over AI scraping content from major publishers, and now federal and state regulators are stepping in to determine accountability," he said. Looking ahead, Pasquale predicted significant changes in AI's role in business communications, particularly regarding Agent AI, which operates with autonomous decision-making. "That's going to be the first thing regulators clamp down on," he noted, contrasting it with AI-driven chatbots, which are more controlled and purpose-driven. EngageIQ and the Future of Voice Intelligence Unified Office is also expanding its EngageIQ platform, adding a classification and prompting engine to enhance AI-driven customer interactions. Voice-based AI solutions are an emerging focus, with new technologies capable of classifying conversations in real time. "Imagine listening to this conversation and automatically categorizing key topics—California regulations, Agent AI, federal policy—all mapped out in a dashboard," Pasquale explained. As Unified Office continues to refine AI applications for enterprise use, Pasquale remains optimistic about its potential—when properly implemented. "There's no guardrail on this thing yet," he warned about AI's rapid evolution, emphasizing the need for responsible deployment and strategic focus. Startups are built on grit, vision, and — surprisingly — a lot of peer advice. In this episode, I sat down with Mallory Contois, Head of Community at Mercury and leader of Mercury Raise, their founder success platform. Drawing from their latest survey, Mallory shares eye-opening insights about how early-stage entrepreneurs navigate challenges like fundraising, hiring, and customer acquisition. Why do founders rely more on peer networks and podcasts like this one than their VCs for operational advice? Mallory explains the unique psychology that makes it hard for founders to admit uncertainty to their investors and why angel investors often provide more operational value than institutional funds. We also discuss key survey findings, including the evolving AI landscape, the benefits of accelerators, and how lean teams are reshaping what's possible in a startup. Whether you're building your first company or gearing up for the next funding round, this episode offers actionable insights and a fresh take on founder dynamics in today's startup ecosystem. Subscribe now to Fund/Build/Scale and learn how to turn your idea into a sustainable business. RUNTIME: 44:44 EPISODE BREAKDOWN (2:19) A brief overview of Mercury and Mercury Raise. (3:42) Mallory describes a day in the life of Mercury's Community team. (6:18) Do mature startups worry about the same things as seed-stage teams? (8:41) “ We have a pretty good pulse on what people are talking about and what people are struggling with.” (9:26) Nearly a quarter of all survey respondents applied to accelerators but were rejected. (11:05) Why founders are more likely to get advice from this podcast than their VCs. (13:39) “ The peer connection that founders have is almost trauma bonding.” (15:02) “ We're seeing founders and investors giving the advice to be much more constrained in spend management.” (17:43) Mallory describes different founder archetypes who are attracted to Mercury Raise. (21:07) “ AI investments now are a lot more calculated than they were in the last couple of years.” (24:45) For AI founders, building in a hype cycle “ can be simultaneously demoralizing and exciting.” (27:17) How Mercury Raise creates value through community. (29:54) Mercury's Investor Connect program helps founders sharpen pitches. (32:54) “Fundraising in general is just a black box.” (36:13) Vibe check: “solo founders are actually becoming a little bit more common and a little bit more accepted.” (37:19) ”Co-founder breakups — it's worse than the real thing.” (38:02) Mallory's advice for founders who are planning to fundraise in 2025. Our guest on this week's episode is Dwight Klappich, research vice president and Gartner Fellow at consultancy Gartner, Inc. There is tremendous interest in the growth of robotics and drone applications now being deployed in distribution operations. Is the hype and attention they have received warranted? Klappich defines the "hype cycle" and how it can be a useful tool for determining when is the right time to adopt new automation technologies.A new report out this week reveals that global forklift sales are sputtering. Lift truck sales are even falling short of their initial forecasts for 2024, according to Interact Analysis, a British consulting firm. That group has now revised their forecast for global forklift sales growth for 2024 down to just 0.3%, which is basically flat. We explain why sales have not met expectations, which sectors are most affected, and prospects for the future. Many logistics and supply chain leaders are focused on reorganizing their supply chains these days—but as they do so, they should be careful to avoid common pitfalls that can derail their efforts. That's according to recent research from Gartner that identifies critical organizational design mistakes that will prevent supply chain leaders from delivering on business goals. The research revealed that the most successful projects radically redesign supply chain structure based on distinct organizational needs, while prioritizing balance, strength, and speed as key business objectives. The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
Taking unproven routes can lead to exciting new possibilities. However, it could also lead to potential failure. That's what makes life interesting, isn't it? Optimistic thinking has led to groundbreaking achievements, like the moon landing in the 1960s. However, it's important to strike a balance between hope and realism. In today's episode, we explore the concept of optimism bias and how it plays a role in the "AI Hype Cycle." We discuss the pros and cons of optimism and why it can be risky and rewarding. For those of you who don't watch MBA videos as a hobby, this video summarizes the Hype Cycle's importance and how it relates to the recent trend toward leveraging Big Data. So, what is this hype cycle we keep referring to? The Gartner Hype Cycle maps out the lifecycle of new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI). Starting with initial media excitement, the Hype Cycle often leads to inflated expectations, followed by disillusionment as challenges arise. However, innovation doesn't stop there. As understanding improves, we reach a more balanced "slope of enlightenment," eventually leading to the "plateau of productivity," where technology adoption becomes more widespread and realistic. The discussion touches on AI's current status in the Hype Cycle, questioning whether we are at a turning point where initial optimism is waning. Some organizations overestimate the short-term benefits of AI, hoping it will be the silver bullet to solve all their problems, only to face disappointment when things don't work out as expected. Like many other innovations, AI is more complex to implement than initially imagined, and optimism can sometimes blind organizations to its true limitations. Managing expectations is key: while optimism is necessary to drive change and innovation, one must temper it with caution and realistic planning. Ultimately, this episode encourages listeners to temper optimism with practicality regarding new technologies like AI. Small, calculated risks are encouraged, but organizations should avoid placing all their bets on one solution. Balance is key to navigating the Hype Cycle successfully. More Key Points Discussed in This Episode: Understanding the pros and cons of optimism bias in business decision-making. An overview of the Gartner Hype Cycle and how it applies to AI. Why the initial excitement around AI may not meet short-term expectations. The risk of overhyping new technologies and the consequences of inflated expectations. The importance of balancing optimism with realism in the implementation of AI. Strategies for navigating the Hype Cycle without falling victim to disillusionment.

The president-elect has promised sweeping tariffs on imports that will have huge impacts to our supply chains. Our guest shares his insights into how importers are trying to bring goods into the country before higher tariffs are enacted and what impacts proposed tariffs may have in the future for our nation's international trade.A new report this week from commercial real estate firm CBRE shares trends in industrial real estate. The report explains that the businesses leasing the most warehouse space are 3PLs, third-party logistics providers. The amount of space that 3PLs are leasing rose significantly over the past year and reveals some interesting themes about the economy overall. We saw more information this week pointing to the growing use of robotics in logistics and supply chain operations. Technology research and consulting firm Gartner came out with its Hype Cycle for Mobile Robots and Drones. The report shows that supply chains are poised for accelerated adoption of mobile robots and drones as those technologies mature and companies focus on implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and automation across their logistics operations. The report explains that several mobile robotics technologies will mature over the next two to five years, and it also identifies breakthrough and rising technologies set to have an impact in the future.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Minter Dialogue with Torsten Hoffmann Torsten Hoffmann, a filmmaker and techno optimist with a passion for emerging technologies. Torsten's journey from Munich to Melbourne and finally to London is as fascinating as his career in documentary filmmaking. His insights into the world of artificial intelligence and space exploration are not to be missed. From Business Deals to Filmmaking Torsten's transition from the business side of documentaries to becoming a filmmaker himself is a story of curiosity and passion. Initially involved in selling documentary packages to platforms like Netflix and Samsung, he realised that filmmaking was not an insurmountable challenge. His first documentary on bitcoin, inspired by his academic work on alternative currencies, marked the beginning of his journey into the world of documentaries. Despite its modest budget, the film's success set the stage for his future projects. The Allure of Space Torsten's latest documentary, "Fortitude," delves into the burgeoning space industry. He discusses the various facets of space exploration, from the geopolitical motivations of the past to the current commercialisation efforts. The film explores the economic potential of space, highlighting the significant reduction in costs and the technological advancements that are making space more accessible. The Hype Cycle and Timing One of the key themes Torsten touches upon is the importance of timing in the success of technological ventures. Using the example of bitcoin and the space industry, he explains how being at the right place at the right time can lead to viral success. His films mirror the hype cycles of the technologies they cover, capturing the zeitgeist and riding the wave of public interest. The Future of Space Exploration Torsten's optimism about the future of space is tempered by concerns about space debris and the potential for geopolitical conflicts. However, he remains hopeful about the scientific and commercial opportunities that space offers. His film "Fortitude" aims to inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts and highlight the economic potential of space technologies. The Art of Documentary Filmmaking Creating a documentary is a labour of love for Torsten. He invests his own time and money, often without a script, allowing the project to evolve organically. This approach, while risky, results in a more authentic and engaging film. His dedication to capturing detailed and factual content sets his work apart in a landscape often dominated by lighter, less rigorous productions. The Role of Space in Everyday Life Torsten's insights into the practical applications of space technology are eye-opening. From improving agricultural practices to tracking environmental changes, the data provided by satellites has far-reaching implications. He emphasises the importance of understanding these technologies, not just for their scientific value but for their potential to transform industries and improve lives. Looking Ahead As Torsten prepares for the release of "Fortitude," he is already contemplating his next project, which will focus on artificial intelligence and the future of work. His commitment to exploring cutting-edge technologies and their impact on society ensures that his future films will continue to be both informative and thought-provoking. For those interested in watching "Fortitude," it will be available on Apple TV, Amazon, and Torsten's own website. Engaging with his work through these platforms not only supports independent filmmaking but also provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the fascinating world of space exploration.

No doubt, marketers have found uses for gen AI beyond social copy and internal content creation, but it's yet to be said if AI will reach an inflection point for brand at this year's Lions. “Unfortunately, a lot of the conversation will be just blustering and hot air,” Weinstein said. “We're not yet at a point where any of us know, including the people building the capabilities by the way, where this ends.” Tune in to hear how Hilton is using AI internally and how Weinstein says the industry should be talking about AI at this year's Cannes Lions on the Digiday Podcast at Cannes. And Make sure to tune in tomorrow for the next Digiday podcast at Cannes.

Since its debut in February, users have found new ways to use this latest iteration of a decades-old technology: scrolling TikTok at work, driving Tesla's Cybertruck, recording their kid's birth. But can VR truly integrate into our daily lives? Or will it forever remain a niche technology for geeks and gamers? Endless Thread dives into the history of VR and its potential for the future. ===== Credits: This episode was written and produced by Cici Yongshi Yu. Mix and sound design by Emily Jankowski. Explore becoming Superhuman here: https://superhumanrevenue.beehiiv.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS AI is a generational technology, potentially bigger than the internet, but currently in a massive hype cycle similar to the dot-com era. Most current AI ideas are basic integrations into existing workflows, not reimagining the workflow, and are likely to be disrupted. Joining an AI company now provides valuable experience, even if 90% fail, as the winners will scoop up experienced talent. The AI technology creating operational efficiency in the short term may not be the same as the disruptors redefining industries over the next decade. Understanding prompting, the foundation of AI language is crucial for developing micro-workflows, agents, and eventually autonomous swarms. The innovator's dilemma and appropriate beachhead selection are key concepts for AI startups to consider when building for the long-term vision. RevOps, once seen as supporting humans, may flip to AI doing the job with humans tweaking and refining. Technical issues like hallucinations and latency will likely be ironed out as the technology matures, revealing AI's true potential. BEST MOMENTS "I've never had more conviction for my students that come up to me. Like, 'Hey, what's up? Professor, like what, what should I do? Like, I want to be, I want to go into startups. Like, what should I do?' And I, I've always had like different opinions. I was like, do you have to go to AI? Like every tech company is going to, in like six years is going to be native AI. You have to get that experience now." "I think all the tea leaves are similar to like 1997. Let's not forget that in that time, we dialled up to the internet using AOL, launched a Netscape browser and did searches through AltaVista, right? Where are those companies? Lycos, right? Is, is, is, yeah, is OpenAI Netscape or is it Google? Like we got to figure that out, right?" "The AI technology that's going to create significant operational efficiency and growth this year and next for companies, especially these bigger companies that my CROs are from is not going to be the trillion dollar new company that disrupts the space." "I've kind of come to the conclusion that the AI companies, vendors, technology that is going to create the most operational efficiency, even for our start-ups in the next year is not going to be the same AI technology company, et cetera, that becomes the disruptor over the next decade and redefines the sales and martech sector." "RevOps has become huge, didn't even exist 15 years ago. And for the most part, RevOps is seen as an organization that supports the humans to do their job. And that flips with what you're saying. Is, at some point, it flips where RevOps does the job and humans there to tweak it."
