In this episode of The SAF Podcast, we welcome Gediminas Ziemelis, Founder and Chairman of Avia Solutions Group, to discuss the company's move into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production through its NorSAF project. As the world's largest wet-leasing provider, Avia Solutions Group operates across six continents and is now leveraging its extensive infrastructure to help decarbonize aviation.Gediminas shares how the company is developing a state-of-the-art SAF and eSAF production facility in Liepāja, Latvia, strategically positioned to serve the Baltic, Nordic, and Central European regions. He reveals how acquiring an existing oil storage terminal has saved years on permitting and construction, while enabling cost-effective scaling of synthetic SAF production using KBR's PureSAF technology—based on captured CO₂ and green hydrogen.Behind this ambitious venture lies a revealing look at how nimble, privately-held companies can move faster in the green transition. Unlike publicly-listed giants retreating from environmental initiatives to focus on core business, Avia Solutions Group can make rapid decisions without justifying every move to shareholders. This agility might be exactly what's needed to accelerate aviation's sustainability journey.Beyond environmental benefits, Ziemelis frames the project as a strategic move toward European energy independence—drawing parallels to how Europe developed sugar beet production in the 18th century to reduce dependency on imported sugar cane. Could synthetic aviation fuel represent the next chapter in Europe's quest for energy sovereignty? Listen now to discover how the future of flight might be taking shape in the Baltic region.Check out our previous discussion with Dani Charles, Veriflux on AI and traceability here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2202964/episodes/17201492

In this episode of The SAF Podcast, we welcome back our first returning guest, Dani Charles, CEO and Co-Founder of Veriflux. Following his deep dive into U.S. policy in his first appearance, Dani returns to unpack the increasingly critical—and complex—world of feedstock traceability in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and how AI can could be the secret to doing it accurately at scale.  Dani explains why relying on spreadsheets are no longer viable at scale and how best-of-breed technology is essential for managing dynamic trade flows, compliance uncertainty, and complex conversions across liquid, solid, and gaseous feedstocks. Does anyone actually know how many bushels make up a bale and how many bales to a ton? AI offers practical solutions that address real industry pain points. Rather than futuristic robots making decisions, think of it as a "co-pilot for compliance" that can extract information from bills of lading in seconds rather than hours, reconcile data across systems, and ultimately compress days of manual work into automated processes that happen seamlessly in the background. For an industry drowning in paperwork and cross-border regulations, this technological evolution couldn't come at a better time.We also explore recent developments in U.S. policy, where proposed extensions to the 45Z tax credit could provide regulatory certainty through 2031 while potentially reshaping feedstock preferences toward crop-based materials. SAF Investor London 2025 is running on the 28th-29th May and is filled with key industry players discussing the critical challenges around scaling SAF investment globally. This week we are joined on The SAF Podcast by Kwame Bekoe, AfriSAF. With over 20 years of aviation experience spanning engineering, sales, and sustainability, Kwame shares his vision for Africa as a major player in the global SAF industry. He discusses how the continent's vast agricultural residue—estimated at over 150 million tons annually—can be leveraged to produce SAF, fostering energy independence and economic growth. We examine AfriSAF's model of integrating smallholder farmers into a data-driven supply chain, using digital platforms and pilot biodigester projects to prove the value of waste-to-energy conversion. Kwame outlines how AfriSAF is targeting scalable SAF production in countries like Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia and many others. What makes this particularly compelling is how it addresses multiple challenges simultaneously. For African nations struggling with energy security, SAF production offers domestic fuel sources at potentially competitive prices – Kwame suggests Africa could be one of the few places where SAF might achieve cost parity with conventional jet fuel. For rural communities facing limited economic opportunities, these projects create meaningful employment that keeps people connected to their agricultural roots while participating in the green economy. And for a continent with the world's youngest population (averaging just 19 years old) that's projected to reach 2.5 billion people by 2050, developing sustainable industries now creates the foundation for long-term prosperity. The challenges are substantial – from infrastructure limitations to investor risk perception – but the momentum is building. With the African Continental Free Trade Area creating the world's largest open market and continental initiatives promoting easier movement across borders, the conditions for a thriving pan-African SAF industry are emerging. Through strategic partnerships with governments, airlines, and financial institutions, Africa need not just be a consumer of sustainable aviation fuel but could eventually become a significant global producer and exporter.Want to learn more about SAF development in emerging markets? As Jonathan explains, the precision required to blend SAF and Kerosene to meet certification standards is significant and the requirement to blend according to market demand requires flexibility not currently found in airport infrastructure. Jonathan explains that their Alphalite modular system designed to optimise blend efficiencies, making SAF more accessible for both business and commercial aviation. Almost akin to a Nespresso coffee machine (other brands are available), blending the perfect amount of water and coffee. We also look at how a modular solution can deal with the inevitable ramp up in SAF production to service the expected growth in demand. We then dive into FlyORO's finances and discuss the pre-Series A funding they received earlier this year and plans for further rounds in early 2025. Jonathan also highlights why they are targeting strategic investors and the benefits they bring. This episode Oscar sits down with Wendy Owens of Hexas Biomass. Wendy, a trailblazer with a captivating career journey, unveils the potential of Xanograss and the Xanofiber it creates which can be used for sustainable construction and as a biofuel feedstock. Her insights offer a flight path into how non-food, second-generation bioenergy crops could revolutionise the SAF supply chain and fulfill the soaring global energy demands.Wendy articulates the significance of maximising every part of the Xanograss to enhance cost efficiency in SAF production, exploring Wendy's mantra of 'using the whole buffalo' in biomass optimisation. Our conversation navigates through the strategic partnerships Hexas is cultivating with growers, ensuring their profitability and the sustainability of local economies. We spotlight the local nature of biomass production, ensuring that the Xanograss doesn't roam far from home—preferably within 60 miles of its utilisation, encompassing partnerships spanning the U.S. and Europe. We then address the rewilded lands and the burgeoning bioeconomy Xanograss can help sustain. Wendy shares her vision for regenerating lands degraded by exploitation, where the cultivation of bioenergy crops can reinvigorate ecosystems and revitalise the local economies of Southeast Asia and northern Africa. By rewilding marginalised spaces and creating localized SAF production hubs, we spotlight a future where environmental restoration aligns seamlessly with economic growth and global energy transition. If you enjoyed this episode, why not try our discussion with Natasha Mann, Future Energy Global: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2202964/14508344SAF Investor LondonThis conference serves as a nexus for innovators, customers, financiers, regulators, suppliers, and advisors, forging partnerships that will drive change. With SAF being the only current solution to decarbonising air travel on existing aircraft, should the owners of around half the global fleet, the aircraft lessors, be putting more skin in the game? This is a large component to this week's episode where Al spoke to Natasha Mann, CEO, Future Energy Global. Natasha launched Future Energy Global in early 2024, but she has a long history in the aviation after experience with Fairchild Dornier and Airbus as well as her time in aircraft leasing at GECAS. Now Natasha is focusing on the Sustainable Aviation Fuel industry by creating  a pre-purchasing system which aims to simultaneously reduce the cost of capital for the producer, increase airline access to SAF and make aircraft lessor portfolios more green inline with the aggressive ESG requirements of their underlying Institutional Investors. Natasha gives a great explanation as to why lessors should be more involved in the SAF space and how Future Energy Global plans to bring capital in to SAF production whilst also lowering the cost of SAF for the consumer.
