Kevin and Cory evaluate potential off-season do-overs for the Texas Rangers, specifically debating the trade for pitcher MacKenzie Gore. They analyze the team's offensive struggles, the impact of losing pitching coach Mike Maddux, and the recent performances of players like Josh Jung and Wyatt Langford.
The Texas Rangers' offensive production has reached a six-year low, highlighted by a lack of clutch hitting and Marcus Semien's team-wide struggles with runners in scoring position. Despite a dismal series against the Houston Astros, the team remains in playoff contention, prompting a debate on whether to trade for a veteran bat. They also evaluate the impact of coaching changes and the fallout from the departure of Mike Maddux.
77 degrees in March and the Cubs are at home?!? Sign me up! That's what the guys were thinking for this week's episode of the pod. Beautiful weather for this one as the guys catch Mike Trout for the first time at Wrigley in their Graphing Era. Jeremy gets lippy with a beer buyer, Jack gets trapped by the Anthem, and the guys are sandbagged by Mike Lout! Also, our security guard friend plays show and tell and the guys get another crack at Mike Maddux. See how it all turns out in this week's episode!
Today on Just Wondering with Norm Hitzges, Norm tackles three stories that couldn't be more different — but all revolve around one word: fairness.First, the NBA's double standard.Norm breaks down why tanking teams like the Utah Jazz are fined heavily for sitting players, while championship contenders routinely rest stars late in the season with zero consequences. Is there really a difference between protecting draft position and protecting playoff legs? Or does the league simply protect the powerful? Then Texas Rangers legend Eric Nadel joins the show to talk Rangers baseball — from the Mackenzie Gore acquisition to bullpen concerns, the departure of pitching coach Mike Maddux, and whether Seattle has officially replaced Houston as the team to beat in the American League West.Eric also discusses his 14th Annual Birthday Benefit at the Longhorn Ballroom, supporting the Grant Halliburton Foundation, and reflects on a broadcasting career that nearly became a law career instead. Finally, Norm closes with what may be the most bizarre Winter Olympic controversy in years — allegations that male ski jumpers are using hyaluronic acid injections to qualify for larger competition suits and gain aerodynamic advantage.Yes. That happened. It's sports integrity, roster construction, broadcasting nostalgia, and an Olympic scandal that makes your skin crawl — all in one episode. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 – The NBA's tanking double standard02:35 – Utah fined $500,000 vs Indiana's $100,00004:49 – Why contenders rest stars without punishment05:47 – Sponsor: Bob's Steak & Chop House06:41 – Full Moon Healing Balm07:58 – Eric Nadel joins the show09:53 – Mackenzie Gore trade analysis10:51 – Rangers bullpen concerns14:14 – Is the lineup better this year?20:56 – Losing pitching coach Mike Maddux22:37 – Eric's Plan B: unhappy lawyer25:27 – Cuba travel challenges28:04 – Mel Allen, Marv Albert & career inspiration31:37 – Winter Olympic controversies34:10 – The ski jumping hyaluronic acid allegations36:44 – Final thoughtsCheck us out: patreon.com/sunsetloungedfwInstagram: sunsetloungedfwTiktok: sunsetloungedfwX: SunsetLoungeDFWFB: Sunset Lounge DFW Just Wondering is a long-form sports commentary podcast hosted by longtime broadcaster Norm Hitzges, offering thoughtful, numbers-driven analysis of the NFL, college sports, the NBA, and the business and culture surrounding them. Norm's got a Monday doubleheader: first, a public-service announcement that the “2–5” Arizona Cardinals are the most annoying good bad team you'll see all year; second, a therapy session about the Rangers' brain drain—Bruce Bochy already gone, and now pitching whisperer Mike Maddux exits stage left to Anaheim. We break down why Jacoby “No Picks” Brissett is the exact backup QB you don't want to face, why this is a must-win that won't feel like one, and how Maddux turned duct tape and journeymen into league-best ERA magic…which Texas now has to replace. On this episode of Broker to Broker, host Marc Summers is exhilarated by the infectious energy and down-to-earth wisdom of Maddux Mortgage Broker Owner, Mike Maddux! Mike's hunger for success in the wholesale industry is an inspiration that mortgage professionals can learn from. Mike's energy, pragmatism, and ability to get to the heart of a topic are all as refreshing as it is educational. With a diverse background in the Marine Corps, the fitness industry, and in the retail channel all before starting his own brokerage, Mike brings a lot of no-nonsense wisdom to the table, and it leads to significant takeaways in short order. In just this episode alone, Mike provides substantiated and immediately applicable advice for peer and client relationship building, social media and advertising, VA and DPA Programs, and so much more. Mike does 50% of his business in VA Loans. His experience with VA and DPA programs leads to some invaluable insight: “VA doesn't have really strict set guidelines on debt to income or credit, and that's why it is one of the best loan programs out there, because if you get an AUS approved eligible, then it works. And if you don't get approved eligible and you have to have it manually under it and you find an underwriter that doesn't have any overlays, that goes off the VA handbook and you can get almost anything approved. I couldn't be more thankful for the fact that 50% of my business is VA Loans because it introduces me to more Veterans, and they're super easy to get close with. So I'm like a kid in a candy store. Oh, you're in the army? I'd love to help you buy a house!” Mike doesn't take no for an answer in fighting for his clients, and takes it a step further for clients that need access to DPA programs: “A lot of Down Payment Assistance programs specific to a state or a municipality are restricted to banks and credit unions. The biggest piece of advice I can give is to do your due diligence, find out if there is a way you can offer it, or what steps would be required for you to partner with said bank or credit union so that you can offer it. And, as a broker, provide a higher level of service than they're going to get from the loan officer at the bank.” Key Points: 1:30 A Roundabout Break into the Mortgage Business 4:20 Growth Mindset of an Up-and-Coming Brokerage 6:20 VA: The Pinnacle of Loan Programs 12:29 Diligence for Success in Down Payment Assistance 17:07 Navigating the Housing Market and Communicating with Clients 19:40 Social Media - Lead Generation Through Being Relatable 27:11 Get Prepared for 2024 by Staying Hungry This episode is sponsored by RCN Capital

Ron and Pete jump on for what is likely the final podcast of the season during Game 5 of the 2022 World Series. With nothing on the line at this point in the playoffs, they turn their attention to what will likely be a busy offseason for both the Cubs and the Cardinals. Will the Cards swap defense for offense behind the plate? Is Mo really going to bump the payroll, and is that tied to Nolan Arenado's decision to leave millions on the table? How much of an impact will Jeff Albert's and Mike Maddux's departures have on the team's performance? The Cubs' offseason will consist of two major decision points: the 40-man roster deadline and their free agency choices. Ron and Pete also go off on fans complaining about old, white broadcasters, and Ron undertakes his annual Twitter purge. Oh, and the Occasional Temporary Guest Host may have lost his title for the last time. Follow us on Twitter, GETTR, and Instagram. Like us on Facebook. Check out Gateway City Sports.
Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. It was a very newsy week for the Redbirds, bringing Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman) out of hibernation to comment on the stories. Does Tara completely believe the company line about the departure of Mike Maddux? Was social media to blame for the departure of Jeff Albert? Also, what about the guys that are staying, Adam Wainwright and Nolan Arenado? Your dynamic duo cover those guys as well. Lots of fun so come on in!
'Nards. Adam Wainwright. John Mozeliak's press conference yesterday was full of news. Jeff Albert and Mike Maddux are leaving. What contributed to Albert leaving? The boys break it all down. Plowsy was a topic of the Rizz Show yesterday. We play the audio. Eating food that's been left out for awhile. The new Pepper n' Geenie open. Mr. Lix joins the show to roast P&G. Traffic talk. Tim went to the Blues game with his son yesterday. Tournament of 'that guy's'.
In the first hour of tonight's show, Matt Pauley is joined by Carter Chapley of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to discuss all of today's big Cardinal news: Mike Maddux and Jeff Albert will not be returning; Adam Wainwright will play one more year; the Cardinals are in the market for a catcher; and the Cardinals payroll will increase. St. Louis Blues' head coach Craig Berube's post-practice comments are also featured, and we learn that the Chief doesn't like Halloween candy.
In the offseason, we record a new episode when significant news breaks, and that was certainly the case yesterday. Adam Wainwright will return for a final season. Mike Maddux and Jeff Albert both will not return. We also decipher some of the smaller tidbits on John Mozeliak's lengthy press conference. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit cardinalsoffday.substack.com
Bernie reacts to the news that Adam Wainwright will return for 2023 while coaches Jeff Albert, Mike Maddux, and Bryan Eversgerd will not. Bernie also listens into and reacts to some of John Mozeliak's comments from earlier Wednesday.
