In a resounding demonstration of international cooperation and a shared commitment to public health, the Government of Saint Lucia has received a substantial donation of 10,000 oral doses of the Polio vaccine from the Federative Republic of Brazil. The official handover ceremony was held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, and brought together diplomatic and health sector officials in a moment of unity and progress. The event was presided over by His Excellency Colbert Soares Pinto Junior, Resident Ambassador of Brazil to Saint Lucia; Honourable Moses Jn Baptiste, Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs; and His Excellency Peter Lansiquot, Saint Lucia's Ambassador to Mexico, Venezuela, ALBA, TCP, and CELAC. The donation forms part of the country's broader commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), launched in 1988 to eliminate polio worldwide. The Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation and Diaspora Affairs played an integral role in facilitating this collaboration, utilizing its diplomatic relationships to advance Saint Lucia's health and development agenda. This significant handover reflects Saint Lucia's continued alignment with global health targets and its dedication to achieving Universal Health Coverage, ensuring no one is left behind in the fight against preventable diseases. It's ok to be anti-Jewish as long as you support Israel. That is Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's bottom line. Mr. Netanyahu is willing to risk losing European officialdom and prominent mainstream intellectuals and activists in the fight against anti-Semitism to garner the support of the global far-right, despite its anti-Jewish roots and sustained links to racism and neo-Nazism. Mr. Netanyahu and his de facto envoy to the global far-right, Diaspora Affairs and Combating Anti-Semitism Minister Amichai Chikli, intend to broadcast that message at an international conference on combatting anti-Semitism scheduled to open in Jerusalem later this month.

A video from an ultra-orthodox wedding last week went viral and stoked fresh rage targeting the ultra-orthodox population. In his column in the Jerusalem Post last Friday (see the Podcast Notes for the link), State of Tel Aviv regular, Ya'akov Katz, gave voice to the growing anger that many Israelis feel towards the ultra-orthodox population in Israel. This time, it was triggered by the wedding video, showing a prominent Rabbi leading what looked to be many hundreds, maybe more than a thousand, men in a frenzied song and dance. As they rocked to the beat, they referred to the nation of Israel as a country of heretics and celebrated their continued refusal to serve in the IDF. Well… hell hath no fury like a population that has given its all to the war effort for 17 months now, being scorned and mocked so openly. This same ultra-orthodox population also receives tens of millions of shekels in funding for their educational institutions annually from this nation of heretics. And they use this funding to provide an education that further demonizes the Israelis who serve and work, entrenching this insane cycle of entitlement, dependence, and exploitation. Ya'akov Katz is hopping mad, and rightly so. We discuss the policies, the gutter political reality, and how this very broken paradigm cannot continue. The IDF has a severe shortage of soldiers—in the draft and reserve armies. This Haredi holiday is over. Ya'akov and I get into it. And pull no punches. The pace of events here is impossible. I'm keen to keep you updated and for now that means more podcasts than usual. Today I was lucky to catch a regular State of Tel Aviv guest and a man with deep knowledge of security and military issues… politics too…Ya'akov Katz. My head has been spinning from the pace of reports being made public by the IDF into the total failure of October 7 and I turned to Ya'akov to make it make sense. He did his best. We discuss the reports, which confirm what we already knew – but in writing. And then there was the unseemly brawl that broke out in the Knesset halls yesterday when bereaved family members were banned from entering the Visitor's Gallery for a plenary session of Parliament. This was done at the direction of the Knesset Speaker, Likud MK Amir Ohana. Finally, we touch on the breakdown of the ceasefire with Hamas and the uncertain fate of the remaining hostages. Ya'akov Katz is back to discuss the wild week we've had here. I caught up with him on Wednesday evening, Israel time, and had intended to focus on the resignation the day before of IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. But, of course, we spent more than half our time discussing the terrible hostage deal that we agree was absolutely necessary. And we get into how the deal might unfold in the coming weeks. Then, we got into the Halevi thing. Herzi Halevi was in office on October 7, and shortly after the disaster, he said he was responsible and would resign. Soon. More recently he had indicated he'd step down in June, but that was suddenly moved up. It's no secret that PM Netanyahu wants Halevi gone—and he has made it very clear that he assigns blame for October 7 to the IDF and Shin Bet. When it comes to his own government and the fact that he is the man at the top of the pyramid, Netanyahu balks. So. Halevi is going—but not until the first stage of this hostage deal is done. Minister of Defense, Yisrael Katz, is regarded as Bibi's guy. He is also not taken terribly seriously by the defense establishment. That may or may not be fair, but it is a fact. The replacement for Halevi will be chosen by Netanyahu. Not Katz. And that person faces an unenviable challenge: restore public trust in the IDF and take a hard look at the army's entrenched bureaucracy and how that needs to be revamped. As always, Yaakov and I spare no one and seem to agree on pretty much everything this week! It's wonderful to have Ya'akov Katz back to discuss domestic Israeli politics and leadership. We jump into the discussion using his superb piece published last Friday in The Jewish Chronicle. (The link is set out in podcast notes, below.) On the one hand, Ya'akov writes, we have a very Machiavellian leader who is constantly calculating where and how to achieve an advantage, which, I suppose, is the mark of any successful politician. With Bibi, though, it's about degree. And then there is the Bibi who has led Israel through these dreadful 15 months since October 7 and is taking credit for having redrawn the map of the Middle East. That's where it gets complicated. How much is because of Bibi, how much is because of a strong collective effort, and how much is, well, just serendipitous? State of Tel Aviv, Israel Podcast

A favorite State of Tel Aviv guest, Ya'akov Katz, returns today to dig deeply into the dramatic collapse of the al-Assad regime in Syria and what it all may mean going forward for Syria, Israel, the Middle East, and the world. Following more than 50 years of brutal rule, the despotic rulers were deposed with lightning speed and skill by a group of rebels led by Ha'yat Tahrir al Sham—or HTS for short—an Islamist army led by a former al Qaeda loyalist who is now poised to become the putative leader of Syria. Whereas the joy over the fall of Bashar al-Assad is clear, it may be premature. HTS is really a conglomeration of numerous jihadist groups in Syria that have united over their common goal to depose the Assad regime. In areas in the north of Syria that have been controlled by rebels for more than a week, there are reports that Sharia law has been imposed. Jubilation, in this situation, is better contained for a while until we see how things settle out. Ya'akov and I do what we do—and get into the various regional and global superpowers with strong stakes in this conflict—and, of course, what it may mean for Israel. It has been a very busy few days on the northern border with Syria, where Islamist rebels came disturbingly close to the border with Israel. For now, that risk factor seems to be under control. Finally, we get into quite dramatic developments regarding the possibility of a hostage deal being negotiated. It's way too early to allow our hopes to be raised… but we can't help ourselves. Always looking for that silver lining. Thanks for being here and listening.State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. Reuters reports “senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri…said [Hamas has] accepted the ceasefire resolution and [is] ready to negotiate over the specifics.” Yet, according to CNN, “Israel has vowed to persist with its military operation in Gaza, saying it won't engage in ‘meaningless' negotiations with Hamas.” As the CNN piece notes, “The resolution says Israel has accepted the plan, and US officials have repeatedly emphasized Israel had agreed to the proposal – despite other public comments from Netanyahu that suggest otherwise.” If the Israelis ultimately do not accept this ceasefire proposal, this would become yet another major embarrassment for the Biden administration.4. POLITICO reports “AIPAC [is] the biggest source of Republican money flowing into competitive Democratic primaries this year…spending millions to boost moderates over progressives who have been critical of Israel.” This piece quotes Eric Levine, a board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition who has donated to Rep. Ritchie Torres as saying “Under the William F. Buckley rule of politics, I want to support the most conservative person who can win.” On the other hand, Beth Miller – political director at Jewish Voice for Peace Action – sees this as the lobby showing its true colors, telling the paper “AIPAC can't actually claim that they represent Democrats and Republicans in the same way. That veneer of bipartisanship is gone.”5. The NAACP, among the leading African-American Civil Rights group in the country, has called on the Biden administration to “Stop Shipments of Weapons Targeting Civilians to Israel [and] Push for Ceasefire.” In a statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson wrote “The current state of Gaza and the latest bombing of Rafah complicates an already dire humanitarian crisis.  Relief workers have also been killed while attempting to administer aid and support to the people of Gaza. The NAACP strongly condemns these actions and calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.” Data from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace shows 68% of Black Americans favor an “immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza” and 59% believe “U.S. military aid to Israel should be conditioned to ensure that Israel uses American weapons for legitimate self-defense and in a way that is consistent with human rights standards.”6. Yet the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza has not stopped censorship of pro-Palestine speech in the U.S. Democracy Now! reports outspoken progressive commentator and former Bernie Sanders presidential campaign press secretary Briahna Joy Gray has been fired from the Hill's morning show, Rising, for supposedly rolling her eyes during an interview with an Israeli guest. As Democracy Now! notes, “Last year, The Hill also fired the political commentator Katie Halper after she called Israel an apartheid state.”7. Even more outrageous, the University of Minnesota is “pausing its search for director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies — days after it offered the job to Israeli historian Raz Segal,” per the Star Tribune. As this article lays out, “Segal is…[a] professor of Holocaust and genocide studies …at Stockton University in New Jersey,” and a Jewish Israeli. Yet the offer was rescinded for “Among other things…[publishing] an article called ‘A Textbook Case of Genocide,' which he published in [the Left-wing Jewish publication] Jewish Currents.” That's right, apparently even being a Jewish Israeli professor of Holocaust and genocide studies is not enough to protect you from charges of antisemitism.8. A new article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, authored by Doctors Adam Gaffney, Steffie Woolhandler, and David Himmelstein analyzes “The Medicare Advantage Paradox.” This piece argues Medicare Advantage delivers less care to patients at a higher cost. As the authors put it, “[as] enrollment in…private [Medicare Advantage] plans surpassed 30 million…the health insurance industry's trade group proclaimed [Medicare Advantage] ‘a good deal for members and taxpayers.'…The first part of that claim is debatable, while the second part is false. Medicare Payment Advisory Commission…the nonpartisan agency reporting to Congress, recently estimated that [Medicare Advantage] overpayments added $82 billion to taxpayers' costs for Medicare in 2023 and $612 billion between 2007 and 2024.”9. In Britain, the Labour Party has been conducting a purge of its Left flank under the leadership of its cowardly centrist leader Keir Starmer. Included in that purge is former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Corbyn has represented the working class district of Islington North for over 40 years. Yet, as the Guardian explains, “[Corbyn] was blocked from standing again for Labour...[and] has been expelled from the Labour party.” The Guardian report continues “Last year, 98% of attenders at a local party monthly general meeting backed a motion thanking Corbyn for his ‘commitment and service to the people', adding it was members' ‘democratic right to select our MP'.” Ousted from the Labour Party, Corbyn now intends to stand for the seat as an independent MP. Writing in the district's local paper, Corbyn stated, “When I was first elected, I made a promise to stand by my constituents no matter what … In Islington North, we keep our promises.”10. Finally, CNN reports Chiquita Brands International  – formerly the United Fruit Company – has been found “liable for financing the Colombian paramilitary group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia,” by a Florida jury. The AUC was a “far-right paramilitary group that was designated a terrorist organization by the US.” Chiquita has been ordered to pay $38.3 million to the families of eight victims. CNN adds, “In 2007, Chiquita pleaded guilty to making over 100 payments to the AUC totaling over $1.7 million despite the group being designated a terrorist organization…The company agreed to pay the US government a $25 million fine.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Key recovery factors: understanding hacker access, affected records, and data retrievability. Scope and Perpetrators: Six NHS trusts and numerous GP practices in south-east London, serving 2 million patients, are affected. Russian Qilin gang believed responsible, using ransomware to lock systems and demand money for decryption keys. Service Disruptions: Critical incident declared due to inability to perform non-urgent operations, including cancer procedures and planned C-sections. Blood test analysis severely restricted, forcing rationing and cancellation of many medical procedures. Recovery Challenges: IT systems encrypted by attackers force victims to rebuild infrastructure, even if decrypted. Former NCSC head, Ciaran Martin, noted that recovery from such attacks often takes weeks or months. Mitigation Efforts: NHS London region employs "mutual aid" by redistributing tasks to unaffected trusts to mitigate care delivery impact. Example: Patients with heart issues transferred from affected hospitals to St George's hospital. Leadership Insights: NHS England's chief executive, Amanda Pritchard, emphasized the vulnerability to international events and the critical, often unseen, role of pathology services. Ongoing Threats: Qilin gang typically also steals data, posting it on the dark web for extortion if ransom isn't paid. No data has been posted yet.

Israel had some strange bedfellows in the news this week. The New York Times unveiled that country's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs created social media bots that posted AI-generated comments to influence American lawmakers and the general public; meanwhile, a rally against antisemitism in Manhattan drew headlines when it was revealed that the organization behind the rally was a Messianic Jewish group that aims to convert Jews to believe in Jesus. While the stories are different, the underlying theme is the same: Israel is increasingly isolated around the world, with ever-sinking public opinion and international allies growing distant. When good PR is hard to come by, you end up with AI-created bots and Jews for Jesus as suddenly noteworthy friends. Avi and Phoebe discuss these topics on this week's episode of Bonjour Chai, with special guest Rabbi Michael Skobac of Jews for Judaism, an organization created in direct response to Jews for Jesus. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today is Day 117 of the war. Political correspondent Sam Sokol and news editor Amy Spiro join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Members of the Knesset House Committee overwhelmingly supported a motion to expel Hadash-Ta'al party lawmaker Ofer Cassif on Tuesday. Sokol was at the 14-2 vote to advance MK Ofer Cassif's impeachment to the Knesset plenum after two days of contentious debate and fills us in. In a recently released report, Tel Aviv University's Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry argued that the Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Ministry was established for “petty political reasons,” “lacks vision and substance” and has “promoted few initiatives.” So should the ministry be shuttered? Spiro, head of the Those We Have Lost series that aims to commemorate all who fell in the Israel-Hamas War, updates us on the 400 posts that represent some 485 of 1,200 victims. Amichai Chikli, Israel's new Minister for Diaspora Affairs and Combatting Antisemitism, just wrapped up a four-day visit to Canada. And while he met Jewish leaders in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa—briefing them on Israel's new $53-million Alef Bet project to invest in Jewish day school education in North America—his trip also raised some eyebrows because of who else he came to see. Chikli was the keynote speaker at celebrations for Israel's 75th birthday and Jerusalem Day. Both were arranged by an Israeli-based outfit known as the Israel Allies Foundation, which uses faith-based diplomacy in dozens of countries to curry political support for Israel. On Wednesday, Chikli was on Parliament Hill at the invitation of Leslyn Lewis, an Ontario Conservative MP who heads a mainly Christian group called Israel Allies Caucus. And on Thursday evening, Chikli headlined a gala reception at the Canada Christian College in Whitby, Ont., at the invitation of their leader, Charles McVety, a socially conservative evangelical pastor. But Chikli tells The CJN Daily that Israel welcomes support from evangelical Christians who believe in the Bible, just like Lord Balfour, General Orde Wingate and others who helped found the Jewish State. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman and Diaspora Affairs reporter Judah Ari Gross join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. We begin with a brief update on this weekend's rallies in which tens of thousands of Israelis protested the proposed judicial reforms for a fifth week in a row. Along with the main protests in Tel Aviv, smaller demonstrations were held in rainy Jerusalem, in Haifa and elsewhere.Speaking from the Haifa rally, Opposition leader Yair Lapid said the protesters had come “to save the country.” Berman landed early this morning from France where he flew to report on this first meeting between Prime Minister Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron since January 2020. What are the headlines? President of Chad Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno opened a new embassy in Tel Aviv last week. What makes this opening so historic? The Times of Israel sat with CEO of the Conference of Presidents William Daroff last week in our Jerusalem offices. What struck Gross from the wide-ranging discussion? US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in the region last week and Berman wrote an analysis that states that maybe his statements promoting democracy should be heard in a different light. And finally, Gross describes what happened when the northern city of Harish canceled the screening of a Holocaust documentary because the film's subject, Alfred Hirsch, a German Jew who saved children in Auschwitz, was openly gay. Legal and settlements reporter Jeremy Sharon and Diaspora Affairs correspondent Judah Ari Gross join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode. Yesterday, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara announced Tuesday that she will not defend the appointment of Shas leader Aryeh Deri as interior minister and health minister in High Court of Justice proceedings. How rare is this refusal? Gross reported on a first announced Deri policy as Interior Minister in which new immigrants will be required to prove they've settled in Israel in order to be eligible for an Israeli passport. What is required to enact this? On Monday, the state informed the High Court that rather than demolish the Homesh outpost, it had decided to legalize it by repealing part of the 2005 disengagement law. What was the reason to demolish the settlement then, and how is the state justifying this reversal? Israeli and Diaspora-based heads of top international Zionist groups sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning him against his incoming government's plan to alter the Law of Return. Gross explains what is unique about this move. Yesterday, Poland said it has been informed by Germany that it does not intend to engage in negotiations on any World War II reparations to Warsaw as Berlin considers the matter closed. Featuring: Aharon Ariel Lavi, Founder and Executive Director“What communities give to people is invaluable…they give a sense of belonging, sense of friendship, and of support and of identity. It's something that is at the core of our lives,” explains Aharon Ariel Lavi when sharing his passionate journey toward working with and supporting intentional communities.Founded in 2014, Hakhel is the first and largest global incubator for Jewish intentional communities. Its mission is to spark and support new expressions of Jewish life in the Diaspora by nurturing the growth of intentional communities.  Aharon Ariel Lavi, founder and executive director, says Hakhel's vision is to give every young Jew in the world an opportunity to be a part of an active Jewish community, step away from loneliness and be part of something bigger.  Hakhel amplifies and strengthens new expressions of Jewish community life.A  Jewish intentional community share three main principals space, time and mission/vision. They are formed to create a sense of belonging. An intentional community is for those who seek for intimacy through connection to a group that isn't complicated  by bureaucracy or hierarchy. These communities intend to create partnerships with  people that share core values and opportunities to work for a common good. Although an intentional community may use social media, social media does not replace real life encounters. Most communities  gather in person at least once per month to fulfill their shared mission. Aharon Ariel Lavi shares his personal journey toward living in and working with intentional communities. He's been  involved in youth communities from the time he was a boy. In 2011, after a lifetime of activity in various communities, Aharon founded Makom Pioneers. Makom Pioneers is  an umbrella organization for 260 intentional communities in Israel. Makom Community Pioneers are made of young, creative and idealistic people from all sectors of Israeli society; working, living and leading local and regional social innovative initiatives throughout Israel. After attending a Jewish intentional community conference lead by Hazon in 2013, Aharon recognized an opportunity to work with Israeli diaspora relationships. This awareness led him to create Hakhel in 2014.  Hakhel launched globally  in 2017, under the umbrella of Hazon. As the Jewish lab for sustainability, Hazon is building a movement that strengthens Jewish life and contributes to a more environmentally sustainable world for all.Hakhel operates in partnership with Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, which works to strengthen Jewish life in the Diaspora and its connection to Israel. ABOUT THIS EPISODE In our final of the journalism mini-series in the Israel Live Podcast Tour, we encounter Zvika Klein, Diaspora reporter for Makor Rishon. Zvika has spent years covering the Jewish world that exists beyond the Holy Land's borders, and bringing those stories to its denizens within. Zvika gained notoriety - and a viral YouTube credit - when he filmed himself walking for ten hours through the streets of Paris wearing a kippah (Jewish head covering), documenting the anti-Semitic sentiment he experienced. But that was one of only many fascinating stories he has brought to readers around the world. Our wide-ranging discussion, from his apartment in the heart of Jerusalem, touched on a variety of complex issues facing the country and its relationships to Jews outside of Israel. Worth a listen for anyone who cares about the Jewish State and values its place in the firmament of world Jewry. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. A decade out of Gaza On the tenth anniversary of Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the Jewish settlements in Gaza, we discuss the lasting legacy of the withdrawal - one of the most dramatic events in Israel's history. What, if anything, can we learn from it a decade later?
