In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with acclaimed author Farzana Doctor about her stunning novel, The Beauty of Us (ECW Press, 2024). They also talk about genre hopping, book promotion, avoiding burnout (and sometimes not), and literary community. More About The Beauty of Us : September 1984, Thornton College private school. After 15-year-old Zahabiya's father remarries, she can't wait to leave home and convinces him to send her away to boarding school. But will she fit in? She joins a clique of smart students but isn't sure if she measures up or how to read the mixed messages from a guy she's crushing on. Seventeen-year-old Leesa has been at Thornton since middle school after her parents' messy divorce. She's been climbing the school's social ladder with equal measures of meanness and manipulation. She's also guarding a big secret that she has to work overtime to keep from her friends. Fresh out of university, this is Nahla's first real teaching job, and she's drowning. She has her distractions though: the flirty art teacher and a cryptic notebook left behind by her deceased predecessor, Mademoiselle Leblanc. Zahabiya and her friends — all racialized girls and victims of Leesa's bullying — uncover Leesa's secret. But can they help Leesa? Nahla, too, is embroiled in her own mystery, assisted by Mademoiselle Leblanc's ghost. Each is indelibly changed by what they learn. Masterfully crafted, The Beauty of Us is a gripping novel about surviving hardship, the power of friendship, and growing up. More about Farzana Doctor: Farzana Doctor is a Tkaronto-based author, activist and psychotherapist. She's written four critically acclaimed lit-fic novels, Stealing Nasreen, Six Metres of Pavement, All Inclusive, and Seven, a poetry collection, You Still Look The Same and a self- and community care workbook for helpers and activists, 52 Weeks to a Sweeter Life. Assyrians in the region of Nhala, northern Iraq, recently celebrated their annual festival in the village of Nahla. According to Maryam Shmoil, founder of Zabo Media and a noted activist, the three-day festival drew more than 2,000 Assyrians from the local area and Baghdad. Despite the celebrations being momentarily overshadowed by the sad news of Assyrian singing legend Even Agassi's passing, the festivities continued with great enthusiasm and were well received by the public.

We are honored to hear from two extraordinary young women, Alia and Nahla Ahmed, who have been caring for their mother since the ages of 10 and 8. Their story is one of resilience, responsibility, and the unbreakable bond of sisterhood. Alia (16) and Nahla (14) candidly share how their lives were upended when their mother suffered a debilitating polio relapse amidst the stress of moving their family. With no other relatives nearby, these remarkable teens became their mother's primary caregivers, tackling everything from helping her walk to managing the household. Their dedication and maturity beyond their years are truly inspiring as they navigate the challenges of balancing schoolwork, social lives, and the ever-changing needs of their beloved mother.Throughout their journey, Alia and Nahla have faced misunderstandings from teachers and peers who fail to grasp the full scope of their caregiving responsibilities. Yet, these young trailblazers refuse to be defined by their circumstances, finding solace in the support of organizations like Australia's Little Dreamers and the power of their unbreakable sisterly bond. Their story is a testament to the strength and resilience of caregiving youth, hidden in plain sight, and a reminder that these remarkable individuals can thrive with compassion and understanding.About Alia:Alia Ahmed is 16 years old and has been a carer for her mother since she was 10, following her mother's polio relapse. Initially, she helped her mother walk before she got crutches. Now, Alia assists with appointments, cooking, cleaning, and providing overall support and companionship.About Nahla: Nahla is 14 years old and has been caring for her mother since she was 8. In late 2018, Nahla, her sister, and her mother left their family home due to domestic violence. Shortly after, her mother experienced a polio relapse, initially undiagnosed, which required Nahla and her sister to help her walk until she received crutches. At home, Nahla and her sister assist with cooking and cleaning to make things easier for their mother.Support the Show.Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver Sisterhood of Care, LLC Website: www.confessionsofareluctantcaregiver.com Like us on Facebook! Fidaa Elaydi joins us today to share her personal experiences of Al Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza. A grandchild and child of Palestinian refugees to Gaza 76 years ago, she is four generations into a history of colonization and displacement, and now, genocide. As a mom of 4 herself, including a newborn, she has an acute perspective on mothers in Gaza today.Hear about her family, delivering babies in war, losing everything, trying to evacuate, trying to reunite, and now trying to survive an impending ground invasion on Rafah where they have been seeking shelter. Mothers for 8 months and 76 years have held onto surreal hopes in Palestine, and Gazans in particular have a special coping mechanism we wish we did, too.Tune in at 6pm EST to Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or head to our website to take a listen. We can't keep talking about Palestine without discussing mental health. First and foremost, we need to distinguish the mental health of those who live in Gaza to those in the rest of the world. This episode starts off by discussing the mental health crisis of the children in Gaza, and then proceeds to discuss the mental health impact of the rest of the world. We discuss vicarious trauma, activism burnout, survivor's guilt and the impact of de-humanizing language on our mental well-being. This episode is joined by psychiatry resident, Dr. Nahla. Dr. Nahla shares her insights on understanding our mental health at this time, as well as providing ways to cope. Thank you Dr. Nahla for sharing with our community! Following the Nahla people's public outcry over excessive waiting times at checkpoints to enter or exit their region, they have reached an agreement with authorities. This agreement grants the residents unrestricted movement without time limitations. Esho Enwya, representative of the village of Khlenane, one of eight villages of Nahla, detailed the negotiations.
Naseem Sadiq's interview with Mr Tooma Khoshaba, a central committee member who exposes the mounting tensions in Nahla, where Assyrians voice their outrage against oppressive local authorities. Imposed checkpoints severely limit the region's inhabitants, leading to a tragic loss as a sick man is denied medical treatment during the curfew. Many residents of the area have to wait for many hours to be allowed to pass the checkpoints. The community's outcry demands justice and an end to suffocating restrictions

Today we are so excited to have chatted with Nikki Jurcutz - CEO of ‘Tiny Hearts Education' which we all know that our listeners avidly follow. As a paramedic, when Nikki would often be called to jobs where, had parents been confident with simple first aid, the outcome could have been very different. So, Rach and Nikki created their baby first aid course to help parents and caregivers, just like you, feel confident, educated and empowered to act in a first-aid emergency with their little one. Eight years later, their dream has grown beyond comprehension. They have developed more courses and products with one vital mission in mind: help parents and caregivers navigate their journey with confidence. Nikki is also a mumma to her girl Nahla and boy Wolf– she has had wild birth stories of both babies but we want to look at her 4th trimester/ her Motherhood experiences and unpack all of the burning questions that you have for her as parents. We talk Motherhood, birthing Tiny Hearts Education, the danger of forums, sleeping rollercoasters, constant feedback from others & having strong boundaries in the fourth trimester, the cold sore virus and SO much more! This episode is brought to you with the help of our Sponsor, Enbacci who are proud supporters of the Pumped Podcast. Do you struggle with saying no to things & people? Do you or someone you know battles with mental health? Do you want to better understand what trauma is? In this episode, I had the pleasure to speak with the inspiring Dr. Nahla. Dr. Nahla is a psychiatry resident living in Canada. Originally Syrian, she strongly identifies to her Middle Eastern roots. Through her social media page, she shares content to help destigmatize mental health illnesses & disorders. The way I see it, she's an advocate for love and is truly in service to support and guide people who may not understand what is truly going on a psychological & emotional level. Dr. Nahla & I both share our personal experiences with our own mental health and what helped us navigate these more challenging times. We also talk about how to stop people pleasing and how those who truly love you will always recognize your value and respect your boundaries. We hope that through this episode you learn more about how to support yourself and others during intense life experiences. These traumatic experiences impact at least one person you know and it's important to have empathy towards everyone. mariaamiouni.com @maria.amiouni @thecosmicchannel @imdoctornahla -- Edited and Mixed By sonorouslab.com

Nahla is a social change maker, a transformative coach, a podcaster, an accidental adventurer and a speaker. As the founder of the CIC Sunshine People, every year she takes on a new challenge and every year she discovers something new about the power that kindness has on people. We first spoke with Nahla in February 2020 where she shared more about how she started off doing challenges and how it evolved over the years. During that episode Nahla shares more about her 2018 challenge of cycling 3,000 miles across America, as well as her 2019 walk from Swanage, Dorset to Gretna Green in Scotland. A 500 mile journey visiting schools and promoting kindness on the way, through speaking, workshops and sunshine people events. In 2020 Nahla took on her biggest challenge to date riding 5,000 miles on an ElliptiGO Bike across the UK while writing “KINDNESS” in massive Strava Art! This challenge would also see Nahla gain a World Record for the furthest distance travelled in a single journey on an Elliptical cycle. Nahla has recently finished writing her 3rd book - “The Accidental Adventurer: just how far can kindness take you” - which will be released on November 1st About the book: The Accidental Adventurer is not only a journey of adventures but a journey of life, with all its rawness, vulnerability and most of all connections. Nahla Summers never intended to become an adventurer but after a life event that changed who she was as a person she discovered that the adventures were helping her find herself not again, but for the first time. This book demonstrates the extraordinary power of the mind when everything else fails. This week on the Awakened Pregnancy Podcast I speak with Nikki Jurcutz co-Founder and CEO of Tiny Hearts Education, former Advanced Life Support Paramedic and mama to Nahla, 3 and Wolf, 1.Tiny Hearts Education was born from a community need. While working as a paramedic, Nikki noticed that parents lacked essential skills and knowledge when it came to paediatric first aid, birth and parenting and knew that something had to change. At Tiny Hearts, our mission is to bring education to all Australian parents that will transform their parenting experience, giving them the knowledge to move through pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood with confidence. This conversation gave me a completely new perspective on how I can empower myself as a mother to a young child, and that it truly is my responsibility to seek out this support.Through Tiny Hearts, Nikki and her sister Rach, have impacted thousands of lives and are truly changing the way that we, as parents respond in an emergency. This episode is empowering, grounding and practical. I know you're going to love it!We talk about…What Nikki saw that brought about the inspiration to begin Tiny Hearts Education with her sister RachWhy ignorance isn't bliss and how to advocate for your childWhy it's important to educate yourself and empower yourself with first aid skills as a parentYou don't rise to the level of expectation in a crisis, rather fall to your level of trainingWhy she hopes that what she teaches you is a waste of your timeThe most important thing in a crisis and how she sets you up to call on thisLife changing stories from the Tiny Hearts communityHow birth is influenced by mindsetWhy you MUST prepare for birthThe impact of mindset on birthWhat you need to focus on when you write a birth planAnd so much more!Show notes for this episode Register for my upcoming Masterclass: How to stay calm and stress-free while consciously conceiving in 2020 To circulate an exchange with me, you can buy me a coffee here.
