North Star Journey
Native-led EV initiative launches by distributing millions of dollars worth of vehicles to tribal communities

North Star Journey

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2024 2:04

In the coming weeks Electric Nation will deliver 10 Ford F-150 Lightning pickup trucks, and a Ford Mustang Mach E, all EVs, to six tribal fleets across the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. Five other EVs will be delivered later. The project's total value is $13.4 million. It's the brainchild of Native Sun Community Power Development Executive Director Robert Blake. The idea, he said, was born out of the Line 3 pipeline protests. “I thought there's got to be an easier way. And I said to myself, ‘Hey, electric vehicles are going to become something someday. These electric vehicles are going to become a part of the transition,'” Blake said. “Then I thought to myself, ‘What if Native people could lead the charge against the fossil-fuel companies with an alternative of electric vehicles?'”Blake saw the program as a way to resist what he calls “the fossil-fuel infrastructure.” He said he also wants to create his own pipeline: a vehicle-charging network from Red Lake to Standing Rock with plans to expand into other tribal nations across the U.S. Electric Nation came about when Blake teamed with Joe McNeil, CEO of Sage Development Authority in Fort Yates, North Dakota. McNeil develops and manages renewable energy sources in his area. He says the program will help place tribes at the forefront of adapting to new modes of transportation. He said it also addresses “barriers for historically under-resourced and underserved rural tribal communities with limited access to EVs.”  “It's really building a foundation of access and awareness and education. So that it's not a foreign technology. I don't think that economics should dictate a person's access to technology,” McNeil said. “Unfortunately, that's what happens in a country of capitalists. If you can afford to be in the technology, then you have access to it. And if you can't, then you're out. So, I think this was a good way to get our foot in the door.”McNeil said much as tribal nations banded together to answer Standing Rock's call to action in protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline, he's hopeful those same channels can carry those same groups into becoming leaders in renewable energy.   “We're starting off with a relationship with Red Lake to connect tribal nations between Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota as a start. And we hope that it spreads,” McNeil said. “For us, it's a way of giving back. I think the expertise and the capacity that's built into our relationships to help other tribal nations if they want to have access to electric vehicle charging stations and electric vehicles, to introduce themselves at their own pace. No one's forcing anybody to do this.” The vehicles will be used by the Standing Rock Renewable Energy Power Authority, Red Lake Fisheries, Red Lake Agriculture Department, Grand River and Prairie Knights casinos.  Native Sun Community Power Development will also receive an electric SUV.  The purchases were made possible through a federal cost-sharing program with Electric Nation's partners: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota Power, Otter Tail Power, Xcel Energy and ZEF Energy.   Native Sun's Program Director Lisa Daniels said all the vehicles are outfitted with a data-tracking system. “We'll be able to see how far and fast they go, how long their journeys are,” Daniels said. “And with some interviews and some surveys, we'll be able to help determine if these vehicles are meeting the needs that that the fleet organizations have for their requirements.”     Electric Nation plans to expand the program into other tribal communities. Once complete Blake says the EV infrastructure will create a Route 66 type travel system through Indian Country.   “I firmly believe that healing is in the environment. And once we start being right with the environment, I think we're going to start being right with ourselves and with each other,” Blake said.

Mike Jeffers and special guest Brandon Meeks talking about his music, recordings, acting and much more.   About Brandon Meeks   Brandon Meeks is seeking to redefine how Gary, Indiana is only known as the home of the Jackson Family. The independent bassist, producer, arranger, and beatmaker is gaining steam in the crowded world of Jazz, Hip-Hop and R&B by choosing to follow his own path and ignoring the allure of popular trends. Meeks’ professionalism and dedication to the craft of making music brought him to the attention of Don Cheadle. Brandon was cast in Cheadle’s 2016 directorial debut film, Miles Ahead—a movie about iconic musician Miles Davis. Brandon worked directly with both Cheadle and jazz artist Robert Glasper during the film’s production. He was chosen to play the character of legendary bassist, Ron Carter. Brandon’s skill as a jazz bassist was a major reason he was chosen to be in the film and this has allowed him to reach an entirely new fanbase. He is now taking full advantage of his good fortune and capitalizing on this moment by introducing people to all of the work he has done that allowed him to gain ground in the industry. Before Brandon was featured in Miles Ahead, he’s held the role of primary producer for the Indianapolis based Hip-Hop band Native Sun. Native Sun has been compared to The Legendary Roots Crew due to their use of live instruments in their performances and recordings. During his time with the band,  Brandon has created 2 magnetically soulful albums plus a series of sharp, compelling videos that have earned the attention of influential cultural tastemakers such as AFROPUNK and Team Backpack. His efforts to share Native Sun’s music and build his audience has resulted in over 500 thousand views, 10 thousand shares and over 1 million people reached around the globe. What’s more amazing is that he has done this while also managing the band’s social media, his own social media and website and the creation of content that has made his website one of the more active and engaging platforms in indie music. Brandon’s work with Native Sun is bolstered by his work with noteworthy jazz and soul artists. He regularly plays bass with Rob Dixon, The JD Allen Trio, Zo! of The Foreign Exchange, Sy Smith, Nicole Henry and is a part of The William Menefield Trio. Meeks also holds residencies at famed and historic jazz clubs such as The Chatterbox (Indianapolis) and Greenwich Jazz Club (Cincinnati).

Blitz the Ambassador and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film The Burial of Kojo, African film making and story telling, magic and allegory, paradox, guilt, genetic memory and truthful moments. Trailer Streaming on Netflix, March 31st. Synopsis Through a magical realist lens, The Burial of Kojo follows the story of Esi, as she recounts her childhood and the tumultuous relationship between her father, Kojo and her uncle, Kwabena. Directed by TED fellow, music composer and musician Blitz Bazawule, the film chronicles the tale of two brothers through the gifted eyes of a young girl who transports the audience to the beautiful lands of Ghana and other worlds that exist between life and death.Born from a newspaper article and a Kickstarter campaign, Bazawule skillfully captures the beauty of a family, even when the circumstances aren't beautiful. The Burial of Kojo is an essential human story of courage and survival. The Burial of Kojo is a 2019 Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) Official Selection and 2018 Urbanworld Film Festival Best Narrative Feature Winner.A Note from the Director:It all began with a newspaper article I read while visiting family in Ghana two years ago. The text was bold and direct…."Galamsey Miners Buried Alive.” That headline stopped me dead in my tracks. For those unfamiliar with Galamsey, it's a local term for illegal gold mining, an extremely dangerous practice with little financial reward and irreversible environmental consequences. I became obsessed with understanding why young men and women risked their lives 30 feet underground, only to be paid a fraction of what the gold was worth. I visited the mining towns of Tarkwa and Prestea to do some research. The more I dug, the more apparent it became who really controlled the illegal gold mining industry in Ghana. Chinese companies assisted by local Chiefs really run the show, operating in the shadows while young local miners suffered all the risks and backlash. I knew immediately this was a story worth telling. However, I didn't want to focus on the obvious theme of victimization. I wanted to craft a narrative that was personal and intimate, giving the audience a glimpse into a Ghanaian family dealing with love, loss, tragedy, betrayal and sibling rivalry.Biography Blitz Bazawule is a Filmmaker and Musician born in Ghana and based in New York. Blitz's short films Native Sun and Diasporadical Trilogìa premiered at New Voices in Black Cinema and Blackstar Film Festival respectively. Blitz is also the founder of Africa Film Society, an organization focused on the preservation of classic African films. As a composer and musician, Blitz has released 4 studio albums, Stereotype, Native Sun, Afropolitan Dreams and Diasporadical. Blitz's feature directorial debut 'The Burial Of Kojo' premiered at Urbanworld Film Festival presented by HBO. Blitz is a TED Fellow and recipient of the Vilcek Prize. 5 of Jacksonville's Best Breakfast Places

If you haven’t already, there’s no time like the present to try some of these great breakfast spots on a Saturday morning:  1. Beach Hut Cafe - Situated just two blocks away from the beach, this diner/ breakfast spot isn’t necessarily high on the gourmet scale, but if respectable service and relatively low menu prices are what you’re looking for, it’s a decent spot. Consider this more of a local classic, if nothing else. 2. Maple Street Biscuit Company - Since its arrival in Jacksonville not that long ago, this restaurant has been immensely popular, which has led to locations sprouting up all over the city and other parts of the Southeast. Some selling points are the assortment of biscuit options and the unconventional way in which they give you your order—by asking you zany questions like who your favorite superhero is or what you had for dinner the night before.  3. First Watch - A breakfast consisting of eggs and bacon doesn’t always make for the healthiest breakfast. For those that find avocado toast and juice blends with any number of fruits and vegetables to be more their style, this is the place.  4. Cool Moose Cafe - Admittedly, I haven’t tried this one out yet, but the collective voice of my Facebook friends indicates that you shouldn’t pass this spot up. Heavy on trendiness, keen attention to detail, and wonderfully flavorful dishes, this cafe likely boasts a lot of popularity for a reason.   5. Metro Diner - Similar to Maple Street, these diners have cropped up across Jacksonville. Good coffee, french toast, and exceptional service are all reasons to give this one a try sometime.  Last but certainly not least, my honorable mention goes to Native Sun. It features the best weekend hot bar in the area with eggs, bacon, sausage, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, and more. It’s all good, and it’s all organic; not to mention, it’s never crowded!  If you have questions about any of the places on my list or about places you should eat breakfast this weekend, feel free to contact me. Also, I’d love for you let me know if there’s a real estate topic you’d like me to cover in a future video!

Samuel Bazawule AKA Blitz the Ambassador Hip-hop was the soundtrack for Samuel Bazawule growing up in Accra, Ghana; later, it gave him his own voice; today, performing as Blitz the Ambassador, he is using hip-hop to “give others a voice.” Blitz began his music theory “training” by memorizing raps and studying the masters Chuck D. (front man for Public Enemy), Rakim, and KRS-One. He immigrated, in 2001, and earned degrees, in business management and marketing. Blitz has released two full-length albums, Stereotype(2009) and Native Sun (2011); as visual accompaniment to the latter, he wrote and co-directed a short film of the same name, which he calls “a true representation of who I am.” Filmed in Ghana and scored with music from the album, it follows the wanderings of an orphan boy as he learns to be the master of his fate.  His musical collaborations include those with Grammy Award-nominated duo Les Nubians, JUNO Award-winning Shad, and Chuck D.. His proudest achievement, though, was the homecoming concert he performed with his full band in Accra in 2011, ten years after he left. Blitz has been hailed by Rolling Stone as “the future of African music.” WEBSITE: http://blitz.mvmt.com/ He is the recipient of a 2013 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Contemporary Music The Vilcek Foundation aims to raise public awareness of the contributions of immigrants to the sciences, arts, and culture in the United States. The Foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia. http://www.vilcek.org
