"A Master Class In Songwriting" Jad Fair is probably best known as one half of Half Japanese. Formed with his brother David in 1974, the Maryland by way of Michigan outift remain one of the more curious entires into the pantheon of rock and roll. Their songs are jagged and battered mini-anthems about broken hearts, monsters and...broken hearts and monsters. As Jad Fair once said, their songs are either love songs or monster songs. And there are a lot of songs. For example: the band's sophomore effort was a triple album, some records have 45 songs all under two minutes. Some of the tracks are barely one...Half Japanese have quite a discography, including classics like Music To Strip By, Charmed Life and The Band Who Would Be King. Over the course of their idiosyncratic, non-traditional career, they've counted the Velvet Underground's Moe Tucker as a member, put out albums on Penn Jillette's record label, opened for NIrvana, and collaborated with Daniel Johnston, Kramer, Steve Fisk, Thurston Moore, Fred Frith Teenage Fanclub, Yo La Tengo, The Pastels, Jason Willett and John Zorn, and were chosen by Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Magnum to play the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating. Half Japanese are underground heroes, who broke every rule of modern music and then broke the rules they broke. They remain a dynamic, artistic and powerful creative endeavor. As for Jad Fair, he's done anything but slow down. Aside from putting out a handful of solo albums, as a visual artist Fair's artwork has yielded several books and museum shows across the world. His papercut style is singular and charming, but also rife with a simple complexity. It's really staggering stuff. Also staggering: his new album 100 Songs (A Master Class In Songwriting). It consists of, you guessed it: 100 songs. Impressed? Well, his other new album Film Music has 150. Filled with swerving low-fi bliss, there's not a false note to be found on these records. But of course there isn't: it's Jad Fair. And Jad Fair operates from a cosmos of creative impulse. And that impulse is as pure and driving as it gets. www.jadfair.net (http://www.jadfair.net) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

The band Danielson started when Daniel Smith worked with his siblings to satisfy a requirement for his senior thesis three decades ago. If you're not familiar with their music, one thing you'll notice throughout today's show is that nobody else sounds anything like them. Daniel and I are talking today about the thirty-year evolution of the group, why he sings the way he does, how the group incorporates visual art into their work, producing records for others (including friends of the show Soul-Junk and Hermit Thrushes), creating the soundtrack to the film Electric Jesus, a new album in the works via Joyful Noise Recordings, collaborations with Sufjan Stevens, Half-Handed Cloud, Kramer, Jad Fair and so many others. Since recording this interview, Danielson has released a short film for their song “Come and Save Me” directed by Chris White that stars Fred Armisen and features previously unused lyrics by the late Larry Norman. Daniel spoke to me from his studio in New Jersey. Today's guest makes me feel honored. It's Jad Fair and he doesn't do many interviews. So when we were able to make this happen, I was thrilled. Jad is one half of Half Japanese (¼ Japanese?). And he's not even actually Japanese! I learned that and a lot more in this episode. OK, I knew he wasn't any Japanese before doing this podcast. But what I DID learn was how Jad creates his unique music. It began when he and his brother David began creating music back in Michigan in the early 70's. That music came to the attention of a pre-Teller Penn Jillette.  But Penn isn't the only collaboration Jad has had. In fact, that was just the beginning. Jad has played with some amazing people like Moe Tucker, Steve Fisk, and Daniel Johnston.  And Jad's music isn't the only unique art he creates. He draws, makes paper cuttings that become album art, and even designed his own guitar that is held together by rubber bands and can be folded in half to make it easier to travel. We also touch on the different hurdles there are to getting noticed in music and how that has changed since Half Japanese started recording. Follow him on Instagram @jad.fair. Find his music on Kill Rock Stars, Joyful Noise, Fire Records, and Moon Records, and Bandcamp. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on X & Instagram. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. On today's episode, I talk to musician and artist Jad Fair. Originally from Coldwater, Michigan, Jad began playing music with his brother David in 1974 as the band Half Japanese. As an art rock group that charted its own path, Half Japanese soon began to be celebrated by tastemakers, and this led to their first record contract. Over the next fifty years, they released over two dozen albums and EPs, and as a solo artist, Jad has a discography as numerous as the stars in the sky. He's collaborated with everyone from Thurston Moore to Daniel Johnston to Teenage Fanclub to Yo La Tengo, and his latest album Jump Into Love just came out at the end of July on Fire Records! There's prolific and then there's Jad Fair. The 30 albums released by his seminal art punk band Half Japanese just scratches the surface. Since 1974, the musician has released hundreds of albums, including 150 issued through Bandcamp in a single year. Beyond the output with his band, Fair's best known work may be his collaborations with artists like Daniel Johnston, Yo La Tengo, R. Stevie Moore and the Velvet Underground's Mo Tucker. Fair is also a prolific artist whose paper cuttings have been show in galleries around the world. Special cameo from Fair's dogs, Button and Blanket. Hosted on Acast. In this podcast we talk about his youth growing up in Michigan, playing music with his brother, starting Half Japanese, relocating to the country, playing music with people such as Daniel Johnston, Mo Tucker, members of Yo La Tengo, and so many more. The Tinklers, Charles Brohawn and Chris Mason, are an "outsider" band from Baltimore who have been together since 1979.  Their talent can be seen on the documentary,  Everybody Loves The Tinklers. Their performance is the antithesis of conventional standards and skills thought necessary for making music.  People may try to tell you that.  They create amazing music.  They are often thought of in the same sentence with acts such as Jad Fair, Half Japanese and Daniel Johnston. Tonight something different.  In the studio I have one of the artists of the band Half Japanese AND they may be one of the most influential bands of all time. Jad Fair is well known for playing an untuned electric guitar. After 30 years, he still does not play in any traditional manner; in the documentary Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King he states that "you do need cords to plug the guitar in but that's pretty much it." Their lyrics often deal with monsters and the supernatural (especially as influenced by "creature feature" and scifi movies), in addition to more conventional themes, such as young love. They have stated that all their songs are either "love songs or monster songs." The band released their first single Calling All Girls in August 1977, followed by a triple album 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts that gave them a near-instant cult status. It is possible they were the first band to begin with a triple album. The band played and recorded as a duo until the early 1980s when they began incorporating additional members into the group: Mark Jickling (guitar and vocals) and brothers Ricky and John Dreyfuss (drums and saxophone). Since that time, dozens of musicians have come and gone under the Half Japanese banner, including Howard Wuelfing, Don Fleming, Jay Spiegel that are both from the band Velvet Monkeys, Shockabilly bass player and Shimmy Disc impresario Mark Kramer and many, many others. Jad is the only member who has been with Half Japanese from the beginning. David Fair eventually left the band in the early 1980s to focus on his family. He has continued to make guest appearances with the band from time to time. Episode 65: Demitasse & Buttercup RADIOThanks for tuning in to 210 Local media Podcast, I am your host, Mario Zamarron. In this episode, I wanted to bring you some music from Demitasse and Buttercup. For those in “the know,” both are connected via Erik Sanden and Joe Reyes, and have been a staple of the scene for over 10 years. The bios for both bands are way too long for me to read here, so be sure to check out the show notes and their pages on FaceBook. Coming up first, we received a request from our friend Laura Marie, also a musician and friend of the podcast, to play Demitasse's Comfy Coffins. So, diving right in, we'll start with Comfy Coffins, Couples Therapy, Dear Diary, and Leave the House from Demitasse. After that, I'll come back on to introduce Buttercup's album, Captains Of Industry. That was Erik Sanden and Joe Reyes' band, Demitasse. Now, we've got their other band, along with bass player, Odie. For Buttercup, I wanted to focus in on their album Captains of Industry. The track list from the album is as follows;Softest StrikeInstant Coffee Part 2Suffer (No More Pain)Flowers and ElephantsSun In The SkyIdentity TheftThanks for listening, and please take this opportunity to find our FaceBook page at Facebook.com/210LocalMedia and give us a like! Thanks for listening.Demitasse Bio: Demitasse is a two piece acoustic group. This is the side project for Erik Sanden and Joe Reyes of the Texas art rock band Buttercup. Singing at the very limits of their range, the band gets sherpa high, mixing melody, spoken word, and noise. The sound is somewhere between Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, and the Beach Boys on a dark day. Or Elliott Smith on an extremely bright, sunny day. Or John Cage throwing his car keys at Yoko Ono.The band records under a strict series of self-imposed rules: their "Vow of Chastity." These guidelines forbid the use of metronomes, click tracks, auto tuning, and unwarranted studio trickery. Being a two piece, they always record together as a duo: so any overdubs are done two at a time, simultaneously -- drums and piano, for instance. They always begin each session singing the lead vocals and harmony together, while playing guitar, and then proceed to build the rest of the song. The live show is almost like beat era music: like two wide eyed, smiley poets, freaking out, but refusing to smash their guitars. Their set up is hyper minimal: two guitars, a drum, and an tiny plastic box. They've been able to travel to a gig on a tandem bicycle, or a scooter with a side car. They plan on touring the country one day in a Smart Car.Hoping to cure sadness with sadness, Demitasse offers catharsis with their upbeat/downbeat melancholy songs: where audience members leave changed, and smiling.Buttercup Bio - Buttercup, a life-affirming art-rock band from Texas, has written hundreds of original songs that NPR calls “jangly art rock for the left side of the brain.” Since 2004, the band has released 7 full length recordings and a DVD documentary. They have toured the US, and have shared the stage with Jonathan Richman, Elliott Smith, Rhett Miller (the Old 97s), Ian Moore, Jad Fair, The Apples in Stereo, Salim Nourallah, and Willie Nelson.Buttercup is a trio of distinct personalities: singer Erik Sanden, guitarist Joe Reyes and bassist odie. The three joined forces in 2003 and have remained the best of friends. In this way, Buttercup is a real band, like U2 or the Osmonds, with long term membership (original members) and a large body of work. Erik Sanden functions largely as a frontman: he is terribly handsome, nigh-literate and his humor tends towards the absurd. Joe Reyes is famous for his unwavering smile, generous nature and, oh yeah, for his Grammy. Odie, a Texas treasure, brings unconventional voicings, deep sartorial sense, and rock-and-roll-animal power both to the bass and to his cooking (he has been known to craft high quality sandwiches on stage).Buttercup's live show blends visual art, performance art and insta --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/210localmedia0/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/210localmedia0/support

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Welcome to Toadcast number 215.  This is called the Kingcast because I have been on a bit of run promoting gigs recently, with three in the last eight days or so.  Given almost none of my friends or music associates came to these gigs and that the list of attending guests on the Facebook event pages made for pretty grisly reading, I was grimly expecting the gigs to be absolutely awful - barely attended wastelands of funlessness - but every single one was brilliant. The people who came were almost all people I didn't know, with a few welcome exceptions, and the gigs themselves were absolutely immense fun.  There was probably more dancing this weekend that at anything Toad-related in history.  So today I have been looking through the forthcoming gigs and getting my ticket links live and stuff like that, and realising that we have some absolute stonkers coming up.  So with a bit of luck, and rather depending on whereabouts in the world you're listening from, I might well see you there.Dancing!  At a Toad gig!  I know! 01.
