When we launched this podcast nearly 6 years ago (!), our goal was to spotlight lesser-known artists we admired. If you ever asked Barry Shrage, the long-time former head of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, how he was doing, he always answered in an utterly unique way. In all my life, I have never heard anyone else answer this way. He would always answer: Never better. Never better. What a great response. It is unique. It rhymes. Never better. It is short and to the point. It radiates positive and hopeful energy. There is only one problem. Does it ring true? I have been thinking about Barry's signature phrase this week given the events of the world. With Buffalo, and Santa Ana, and all the other dreadful news that you do not need me to remind you of, is it possible to say and mean : never better? We could engage the world as it is, but that might make us depressed. We could ignore the world as it is and focus on the Eastern Conference Finals between the Celtics and the Heat. But can we engage the world as it is, and still radiate positivity?

November 30, 2020 -What are your favorite stories from growing up? Well, make room on your bookshelf for the chickens who dreamed of speaking Yiddish. We dive into a treasure trove of children's literature, brought together here for the first time by Miriam Udel. Her book is Honey on the Page: A Treasury of Yiddish Children's Literature. Storytelling binds us all together, so you don't have to be of the Jewish faith to enjoy these tales, although they'll speak in a different way to those readers. Miriam Udel is associate professor of Yiddish language, literature, and culture at Emory University. She holds an AB in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and a PhD in Comparative Literature, both from Harvard. In 2019, she was ordained a rabbi at Yeshivat Maharat. Her previous book is  Never Better! The Modern Jewish Picaresque, which earned the 2017 National Jewish Book Award in Modern Jewish Thought and Experience. PRESTON MAX ALLEN is a playwright, composer, and lyricist whose work has been seen at the New Amsterdam Theatre, Lincoln Center, New York Musical Festival, Signature Theatre, Musical Theatre Factory, Feinstein's/54 Below, Joe's Pub, Laurie Beechman Theatre, York Theatre and Second City Chicago. Preston conceived and wrote book, music, and lyrics for We Are The Tigers which won the L.A. Stage Alliance Ovation award for Best Lyrics/Composition, Never Better, and The Rage: Carrie 2, An Unauthorized Musical Parody and many others. His play Modern Gentleman was also featured as part of the 2020 PRIDE PLAYS Festival. Just had an amazing day and wanted to share it with all of you!

Folks, we did it. We managed to find a hip hop record that Chris Cusack enjoyed. We're fairly sure that this is one of the signs of the apocalypse so we're probably just going to end the podcast here. Thanks to everyone who listened. Joking aside though, this is a screamer of an album. People have been drawing comparisons between punk and hip hop since...well, forever. The line between the two is drawn pretty clearly on this album. P.O.S himself was a punk kid, but growing up in the cultural and musical melting pot that is Minneapolis meant that there was a great deal of other influential music lurking just around the corner. Indeed, the diversity of the artists that come from the city is telling of the city's cultural and creative landscape. And did we mention that it was the home of Prince, perhaps one of the masters of genre-hopping? This is P.O.S third album, and like every album before or since, it's a singular musical, tonal entity in his oeuvre. He's artist that never wants to cover the same ground twice, and whilst we all couldn't necessarily agree on if each of his records are successful at melding together as many disparate influences as this one, we all certainly agreed that this is his best work. And we all agreed that this should indeed make it into our discography of unsung classics. Do you agree? Vote on our Facebook page.

The aforementioned unfortunate circumstances which led to last week's change of plan loom large over this week's episode. Cat Power's difficulties with her mental health are well documented, and we felt we needed to give this episode a little extra time to address not only those, but how musicians in general deal with their own personal demons.  The original plan was to follow Episode 22 with Never Better by P.O.S. However we felt it right to change the order with recent circumstances in mind. We had decided that we would tackle this album way before the news of Scott Hutchison's tragic passing; it was simply a morbid coincidence that took us on the journey towards listening to, and discussing, an album which cover such topics. Weaver returns this week and all three of the guys sing the praises of this dark, sparse record. Chris makes a case as to why it is perhaps her best album, and as ever there's a Dave Grohl connection, as seems to be the case with most of our albums, which leads Mark to announce a new recurring feature. Back in my car for this interview. This time it was on a freezing December night where the thermostat was definitely in the minus figures, so when we got inside I turned the engine on and the AC up to get some heat into the damn thing. You can probably hear that in the interview. I think it lends it a certain ambiance. You are, of course, welcome to disagree.P.O.S approaches hip hop in a punk rock way. I initially heard him when a friend turned me onto his song ‘De La Souls', which features Greg from The Bouncing Souls. This was around the time Never Better came out. I got both Never Better and Audition on the same day and was impressed by his approach. Those two albums are mostly loud and abrasive, and both feature contributions from punk rock singers (as mentioned, Greg from the Bouncing Souls, and Jason from Kid Dynamite on a track called ‘Terrorish' on Never Better). I read an interview at the time which said he was just making hip hop people could skate too. That sums up a lot of what Audition and parts of Never Better sound like. It's loud, brash, snotty and in your face.We Don't Even Live Here came next and he's right when he calls it a dance party. It's mostly electronic and it goes hard. It seemed a bit of a left turn to begin with, but like everything else it's got the same abrasive nature.His new record chill, dummy is a lot more laid back. It's also great and we do harp on about closer Sleepdrone/Superposition at length in this interview. I've never heard a hip hop song – or any song – like it.I met him a couple of times when he hit Glasgow to support Never Better. He was the consummate gentleman, of course, and I was just as impressed with his work ethic and ethos as I was his music. When I was thinking of guests I wanted on this podcast before I begab, he was definitely up there. So in a way, talking to him fulfils another long held dream I had for this podcast.Goals. We all gotta have em.And so we move to this interview, which is certainly up there with some of the most fun ones I've conducted. He was so up for it, really game for a chat and having a bit of a laugh. The whole thing is easy and flows really well. I didn't even get to look at my questions, instead just riffing as I went. I've waxed lyrical on my love and history with hip hop a couple of times recently, so there's no need to go through it all again.Andy Hepburn, known as Astronautalis, has been one of my favourite rappers since I heard him on the P.O.S. album ‘Never Better'. His style, delivery and the literary intelligence of his lyrics appeals to the writer in me in ways that a lot of rappers really can't match.Upon landing this interview I did a whole bunch of research and found out that he's related to the 4th Earl of Bothwell, James Hepburn, Better known as Mary, Queen of Scots' third husband. I won't bore you with the details of the history and why that's so interesting to me (it's covered in the podcast) but suffice to say, the Scottish history geek in me was happy to have a chat about all of that with Andy.He's probably one of the coolest, most laid back people I've spoken to so far and this chat is one of the easiest I can remember. P.O.S is an indie hip hop legend, mostly for pioneering a caustic sound which incorporates punk and hard rock influences in his beats. He is also the kingpin of the Minneapolis Doomtree Collective. Suffice it to say, I was psyched to meet the guy. This interview was a real pressure cooker.
