Rise Against released their 9th full length studio album titled "Nowhere Generation" in June of 2021!  Tim McIlrath from Rise Against joins Stryker on a really fun and entertaining episode of Tuna on Toast.  Tim and Stryker discuss that it's been more than 20 years since the release of their album The Unraveling.  Tim talks about his early goals for the band and how weird it was to finally declare that he is a professional musician.    This leads into Tim telling Stryker all about his return to college during the pandemic...NorthEastern Illinois University!  Tim is back in school going for his degree that he was so close to getting many years ago. Tim talks about meeting with his counselors and being recognized in his classes and which class has been the most difficult. Tim also mentions that some of his classes have helped him navigate this crazy time we live in.    Tim then talks about how Rise Against met Fat Mike from NOFX and what led to him signing the band.  Rise Against didn't have one show under their belt at the time! Tim also tells a great story of a meeting both he and Joe had with Fat Mike.  The guys drove from Chicago to Detroit to chat with Mike.    Many of their early shows they opened for Strung Out and Mad Caddies, NOFX and Sick of it All.   Tim talks about the band going to a major label and what the band thought was going to happen professionally vs what actually happened.  Stryker asks Tim about a show just before the pandemic in which Rise Against opened for the Misfits in Los Angeles.   Tim then discusses why they covered the Misfits song "Hybrid Moment" for the Rise Against "Nowhere Sessions" EP as well as the song "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival.   When discussing being the opening act so often early in the career of Rise Against, Tim said "the band you become has a lot to do with your introduction to the industry".   The guys also talk about the future of Rise Against.  Tim also gives wonderful advice when it comes to being a new band.   Tim Mcllrath is a smart and talented dude full of an energy that is absolutely infectious... Guitarists Tim McIlrath and Zach Blair enjoy tenacious tones with rock's mightiest tag team—Gibsons into Marshalls—aided by a few everyman effects and one mythical stomp. Rise Against rose out of Chicago around Y2k on the back of roaring Gatling-gun guitars, blast-beat rhythms, and defiant, sharp-tongued social commentary. The band's first pair of albums—2001's The Unraveling and 2003's Revolutions Per Minute—are blistering bangers rooted in traditional hardcore chaos, spiced up with fist-pumping, boot-stomping choruses. Siren Song of the Counter Culture in 2004 was their major-label debut, on Geffen. That album highlighted a broadening hardcore sound buffed up with more melody. (Think '90s Bad Religion messaging cloaked in early 2000s AFI harmonies.) However catchy they became, their message still ripped like a dagger. Appealing to a bigger audience with bouncier hooks, acoustic numbers, and string overdubs earned them their first splash into the Billboard 200 albums chart (eventually certified gold in the U.S.). Elevated visibility scored them back-to-back platinum albums—2006's The Sufferer & the Witness and 2008's Appeal to Reason, and that momentum carried over to a continued residency in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 with 2011's Endgame, 2014's The Black Market, and 2017's Wolves. And 2021's Nowhere Generation represents a maturing, melodic hardcore outfit that continues to stand up for what they believe in and still provide the revolutionary attitude to back it up. The continual growth and evolution of their melodic-hardcore formula has allowed them to roll into mainstream airwaves like a Trojan horse. Newcomers who were enamored with anthemic choruses ("Savior," "The Prayer of the Refugee," "Nowhere Generation," "Give It All," "I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore") quickly became dancing disciples because of the band's knack for earworms. They've kept us waiting for quite a while - but now, after four years, Rise Against's new record "Nowhere Generation" is out on June 4th! We talked to singer Tim McIlrath about working on the album, following political & social pressure versus being yourself, touring and how much they miss being with their fans - and also about going back to school (virtually, of course) and making the most of that last year of lockdown and pandemic. This week on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast we are talking with musician, singer and songwriter Tim McIlrath of the punk rock band Rise Against. Rise Against is known for being very outspoken on a range of social justice issues such as animal rights and environmentalism. One of the themes of their new album Nowhere Generation is the disparities that exist in our society.  There are intense disparities that exist in this world for people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and economic resources. So not everyone gets the same access to education, health care, jobs, healthy food and clean air among other things. One of the core principles of humanism and humanistic psychology is that all people have value, and it is our job as individuals and as a society to help people realize their potential in life. So these disparities that exist run counter to what we hope for in a humanistic society. And then the question is when we face these types of disparities – and we see that there are systems in place that interfere with our ability and the ability of others to achieve purpose in life, what do we do?McIlrath talks about addressing the issue of disparity on two fronts. The first is the concept of agency – empowering people to find their purpose in life and work to achieve it no matter what obstacles they face. This is a very core tenet of punk rock – the idea that our ideas, hopes and dreams matter, even if we are marginalized in some way. And the second front McIlrath talks about is taking on the system – identifying and challenging the structures that exist that interfere with people having equal opportunity to live the lives they want. And what’s particularly important is that we can do both. We can work both to find the agency to build the life we want and to change the system and structures that hold people back. And these concepts that McIlrath discusses are so very much in line with core humanistic principles – that everyone has value.
