We're back! And we're talking about one of our favorite bands, Rx Bandits. We talk about whether this album is a Mars Volta ripoff, why Lucas had such a hard time embracing this record when it came out, whether this album suffers from the lack of horn sections and that this album might have the best Rx Bandits lyrics to date.
Russian Circles/Memorial (feat. Today on the podcast we welcome Rich Balling from The Sound of Animals Fighting, Hospital Gown, Pyramids, and RX Bandits. Rich and I reconnected recently as we last crossed paths during my days at Equal Vision during The Sound of Animals Fighting release “Lover, the Lord Has Left Us…” back in 2006. Now The Sound of Animals Fighting has a new EP called “APESHIT” out on Born Losers Records. Rich and I discuss his career balancing music, collaboration and his day job. Old shows he saw growing up in LA, plus his amazing knack as a teacher in real life to provide some real knowledge about listening to your heart, your mind, and realities we face as creative people. And yes, we talk emo. It's a podcast about emo.
When Eric Daino formed The Holophonics in Denton, Texas in 2012, there weren't a lot of other bands in his area playing ska. That was fine with him. The group went hard regardless, recording originals and a ton of ska covers (18 covers albums in fact!). The vibe was goofy. They imagined exaggerated versions of Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake as characters they were playing. That changed. The band no longer plays cover songs and doesn't want to be perceived as a goofy band. Their latest album, LAVOS, on Bad Time Records, really showcases this. It's an extremely personal, heartfelt record that deals with Eric's anxiety and trauma, and finds him grappling with his identity. Musically it's informed by RX Bandits, Thrice and Mars Volta--though still rooted in ska-punk. Today, we talk to The Holophonics singer Eric Daino. He walks us down the band's interesting history, while also shedding light on Denton's music scene, as well as the scene in Long Island, where he grew up. We talk about the band's many covers, which even included Luis Fonsi's "Despacito." (Their ska cover has over 2 million views!) Eric also tells us about the covers record that was their most sincere, a full album tribute to Jimmy Eat World's Clarity. We also get into detail about LAVOS. Eric talks about the trauma that informed the record, how therapy helped him process his pain, and how he used Chrono Trigger to help articulate it all in his music. He also tells us about the Ska By Skawest festival and which song he told the crowd is about "how we're all going to die." Tunes & TumblersA podcast pairing music & original craft cocktails. The truest punishment may come from listening to this week's episode of Punk Goes Pod in its entirety. Sam talks way too much when discussing his feelings about Megadeth, and their song "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" (as covered by Rx Bandits for Punk Goes Metal). Hopefully Emma makes it through this (spoiler: she does).
The newest episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast is an interview with Rich Balling, founder of the experimental post-hardcore supergroup The Sound of Animals Fighting, former RX Bandits member, and the person behind Pyramids, Sailors With Wax Wings, White Moth, the Handmade Birds record label, and the new hyperpop project Hospital Gown. Hospital Gown's debut album Diamond Life 2 came out earlier this month on Born Losers Records, and TSOAF are gearing up to release their first EP in 14 years, Apeshit, on December 8 via the same label, followed by a tour in January. Rich and I discussed TSOAF's comeback; the multi-genre, multi-generational collaborations on the Hospital Gown album that range from screamo to hyperpop to rap and beyond; some TSOAF history, like the time Equal Vision had to destroy copies of their 2006 sophomore album Lover, the Lord Have Left Us because of an uncleared Neurosis sample; how playing Taylor Swift's Red in the car for his daughters led to a love of pop music; dealing with negative comments on the internet; and much more. Theme music by Michael Silverstein.
On this episode of Ear Buds, we share our thoughts on Mars Volta's latest record, "Mars Volta"! We had a lot of strong opinions because we both absolutely love Mars Volta. We talk about Lucas picking up his dog from the kennel, Ash seeing Mars Volta live recently, how Mars Volta has been threatening to make a pop record for a while, how confused we were listening to this new album, we compare the new Mars Volta to Rx Bandits and we go toe to toe on naming Adult Swim cartoon. Take a listen and let us know what you think! Rate us, review us and follow us on IG @ EBPcast or on our YouTube channel.

The Matches played catchy pop-punk in the 2000s, a time when catchy pop-punk bands could be top 40 pop stars. They worked their asses off, were courted by major labels, but never reached pop stardom. Though the band did mean a lot to a ton of people. They built community around their music and made sincere connections with their fans. And they have ska roots. The band formed in 1997 as The Locals. Inspired by Rancid, they originally played a blend of punk rock and ska-punk. They also looked up to fellow east bay band Link 80. And in fact, even went to high school with Link 80's original guitarist Matt Bettinelli-Olpin. The Locals even played Link 80s final show! Today we talk to The Matches' lead singer/guitarist Shawn Harris about the bands roots and dig into several stories throughout the band's career. We discuss their years building a scene at East Bay venue iMusicast, where bands like My Chemical Romance, Zebrahead and RX Bandits would play on tour. We also talk about The Matches first major tour--which was with Reel Big Fish. Shawn tells us about two mind-blowing shows from that tour. We also talk about why Gilman would never book the band, what is was like working with some famous producers (Tim Armstrong, John Feldmann), how The Locals ended up touring in Bosnia while they were still in high school, and Shawn talks a bit about his new life as a children's book cartoonist, book author and Dave Eggers collaborator. Shawn even tells us about the time he sneaked a peak into Dave's CD collection to see what kind of music he listened to. And it was exactly the bands you think it was! Support the show

Rx Bandits are an American four-piece band from California. The band formed in 1995 in Orange County, California. They have appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Bamboozle, and plenty of club shows throughout the world I think. In 2001, after touring on their third album "Progress", Rich left the band, citing frustrations he had with certain aspects of the music industry. He later went to form The Sound of Animals Fighting. They released a trilogy of records between 2004 and 2008, and performed only four live shows, following their second release in 2006. The band's live lineup consisted of 12 different musicians and they often employed the use of animal masks to conceal their identity. Rich slid into my DMs on IG a while back after he found the Donuts N' Glory interview (Episode 114) and we've been chatting about old scene stuff since then. I wanted to find out about his days in RX Bandits and The Sound of Animals Fighting, so I asked him onto the podcast, he said yes, and this is what we chat about: Donuts N Glory Flyers How The Sound of Animals Fighting got their sound Shame about the masks No Knife Nick from Link 80 writing him a letter The ska band shame Rejection letter from Mike Park How they got on Drive Thru Fenix TX The Gadjets Finch Being on the Bloodhound Gang's CD And a ton more Go buy his Revolution on Canvas books and check out all of the music he's created by clicking on the links in the show notes. During Skankin' Pickle's run, Mike Park had so many songs, he tapped Less Than Jake to record an album with him. He called it The Bruce Lee Band. This record was released in 1995. A decade later, The Bruce Lee Band returned with Beautiful World, this time backed by RX Bandits. But then, nearly a decade later, The Bruce Lee Band became a solid group with Mike Park, Jeff Rosenstock, Dan Potthast and Kevin Higuchi (Though Mike Huguenor was involved in the two 2014 records). They've put out several releases. Last year they released the excellent EP Division in the Heartland. And on May 27th, they will release their full-length, One Step Forward. Two Steps Back--incredible, passionate and at times angry ska-punk. On today's episode, we talk with two members of The Bruce Lee Band: Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock. We discuss the two's origin story--Jeff's old band Arrogant Sons of Bitches tried to play at an event Mike threw at the Oakland A's parking lot, but Mike said no. We talk about the role Chris Candy played in the two becoming friends. And we talk about the mid-to-late-2000s era at Asian Man Records, where Mike had a vibrant selection of amazing punk bands like Bomb The Music Industry, AJJ, Lemuria and Shinobu. We also discuss how drummer Kevin Higuchi went from San Jose bar band drummer to joining The Bruce Lee Band and Jeff Rosenstock's band, Mike Park smoking weed with Alkaline Trio, and the infamous Skankin' Pickle reunion shows in Japan. And of course, we dig deep into The Bruce Lee Band's excellent catalog. Support the show
Link 80's debut record, 17 Reasons, gets a lot of attention, rightfully so. But the group has other records worth your time, particularly their excellent 2000 album The Struggle Continues. On the album, you can hear the group's maturity as musicians, and their broader influences, which include deeper hardcore, and even some nu-metal elements. Our co-host Adam Davis was very involved in the band during this record, as was our guest today, Steve Borth. Steve joined Link 80 on sax shortly after Adam started playing guitar in the group. Steve brought a lot of skill to the group. After his time in Link 80, he joined RX Bandits and contributed to a handful of their best records from the early/mid-2000s when they were balancing prog-metal, math rock and a sprinkling of ska. Later Steve moved to Denmark and has continued to play music, generally keeping his foot in reggae/dub projects. (Satori, Chllngr) Today we discuss his groups in great detail and even dive into his father's career as a traveling Christian musician in the '60s and '70s. We also discuss Steve's current project of bringing together Danish and Jamaican musicians together to play reggae music. We also devote some time to the Sacramento scene that Steve grew up in and talk about the first ska band he ever played in: LesdysticsCheck out bonus "Behind The Curtain" episodes, exclusively available on our Patreon at www.patreon.com/indefenseofskaThis week, you can hear our extended conversation about Adam's former bandmate, Steve Borth. Augusta Koch’s first band was called The Blue Bananas, a ska band. They had a few originals and performed a Choking Victim song. They didn’t last long. She’s since gone on to play in some incredible non-ska bands like Cayetana and Gladie. And she even sang vocals for the fictitious group DUH in the horror-comedy film Uncle Peckerhead. But ska has remained important to her. During the pandemic, she found comfort in revisiting some of her favorite bands from when she was younger. RX Bandits have been a particular favorite for her. Augusta talks with us, not just about her ska roots, but also what it’s been like for her the past couple of years, creatively and personally. We discuss a blog post she wrote about starting smoking again during the pandemic and she also tells us about Jeff Rosenstock asking her to contribute to SKA DREAM by screaming on a few tracks. We discuss the Sparks cover she made with Mike Park, and we also get into a discussion about what her favorite Mountain Goats record is. And most importantly, we try to understand why the ska scene just feels so much better to be a part of than other “cooler” scenes. We come up with a few theories. The late ’90s were a busy time for Steve Choi. While he was playing drums in the punk band The Blockheads—a band that Lookout Records were considering signing—Mike Park invited him to join his new all-Asian ska-punk group The Chinkees. At the same time, he moved to Santa Cruz and filled in on various instruments with Slow Gherkin. Oh and somewhere in there, he played keyboards with The Specials for a tour. As a child, Steve was given a formal education in music. But ska and punk music allowed him to let go of all the complex training, and feel music on a deep, fundamental level. But eventually, he would learn how to bridge these worlds. That moment came when he joined Southern California ska-punk band RX Bandits in the early 2000s. As he joined the group, they were moving away from ska, and going into much more musical intricate territory. Steve was able to take his formal training, and apply it to punk. He helped RX Bandits forge a whole new identity, one that initially sparked a backlash amongst some of their ska fans, but would eventually find a fan base that had longevity as the years went on. On this episode of In Defense of Ska, Steve talks about his early days playing ska and punk. He also describes the philosophy that guided RX Bandits when he joined and talks about his time producing beats, most notably for rapper Lil Peep. We also discuss the physically demanding Plea For Peace bicycle tour he did, his process for creating content for his new podcast, The Musician’s Guild, and how he and Mike Park ended up creating a new Chinkees EP in 2020. This week I'm joined by Steve Choi of RX Bandits. I have been a big fan of RX Bandits for a long time and I am very appreciative of Steve taking the time to join me in obsessing over food. In this episode, we'll be focusing on the French Fry. It's everywhere, it's delicious, it's comforting and, in my opinion, it's the ultimate vehicle for condiments. The French Fry may not be Steve's favorite food, but it's a part of his story and many touring musician's stories throughout their careers... From touring with no money in a 15 passenger van to day off Michelin Star restaurants in Paris, the French Fry is there. You can find Steve on Instagram at @rxchoi You can find us on Instagram at @food.ontour If you have any questions, comments or, most importantly, food recommendations, you can send those to foodontourguys@gmail.com Full list of restaurants mentioned on this episode is at foodontourpod.com
For the first full length episode of The Musicians Guild I wanted to stay close to home, and there are few people I've shared my musical home with longer than my brother and bandmate Matt Embree. Vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and deep thinker are just some of the many trades and titles he has collected over the years. In this conversation we discuss early touring days of RX, songwriting and creative habits/tendencies, Frank Zappa, Metallica's use of subpar drumming and many other things I'm forgetting. It's not uncommon for Matt and I to have phone conversations that last an hour or two so this conversation was just a fraction of all the things we normally discuss. I can already tell that I'll have to have him back for more episodes. Enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Guitarist, Songwriter, Producer and buddy of mine Steve Choi ( Rx Bandits, The Sound Of Animals FIghting , Peaced Out, J Moon ) comes to the Nod for the first time. We had a lovely virtual morning hang a few weeks into our mutual quarantines. We each drank a cup of coffee, smoked a joint and let the conversation take us where it wanted to go. We talk about the madness we are witnessing right now with COVID-19 and how we are both dealing with it. We talk in depth about our struggles and triumphs with creativity, ego and inner peace. There's some tour reminiscing and some questions answered from those who submitted in the patreon discord... This week’s guest is a self proclaimed “podcast freak”, but you may know him from a little band that started up in the early 2000’s called, The Starting Line. Ken Vasoli! Dewey and Ken dive right in, recapping the fascinating “Fat Mike” episode. Dewey shares a little behind the scenes of that initial first call with Fat Mike, what we didn’t hear in the interview. Ken reveals that he is in fact a podcast host himself! His show, titled Wax On, is essentially a college radio show run in his music room where him and his girlfriend play and discuss a handful of records with the occasional guest. Originally from Horshem, PA, Ken lived a pretty suburban life. He began piano lessons at age 5, imitating his older brother, which soon led to sibling competitiveness. At 9 he took on the bass guitar with his teacher, Rick Smith, that lead him through the entire Highway to Hell album. Ken shines insight on his musical upbringing with his dad’s cover band playing tunes such as “Heard it From the Grapevine”. Dewey inquires about the initial joining of The Starting Line, and how his age played into that. He was in fact only 14 when he began playing with Matt. Ken notes that the age gap between him and the rest of the members never seemed that strange. The two talk through the sound evolution of The Starting Line, and how different each album is. Ken shares tales from days of touring with the RX Bandits and going deep into the “weed hole”. Ken shines light on the status of The Starting Line, why they went on hiatus, and what came of it. This is the pilot episode of a new IBTAP series titled "Lyrical Breakdown." In this series AJ and/or Dan break down a song they like either line-by-line or stanza-by-stanza. The idea is to identify the individual value we derive from songs we hear at certain points in our lives. In Episode 0, AJ breaks down the song "Brown Shingle Berkeley" by Love You Moon (which is the side project of Matt Embree, frontman of RX Bandits). Join AJ as he sits down unscripted and discusses the lyrics and how it relates to his life. And the Battle Begun was a huge departure for these Seal Beach ska veterans. With their 5th album, they incorporated heavy doses of prog rock and hardcore into their third wave ska sound. It's one of Will's favorite albums, and he doesn't care that it sounds like At the Drive-In. Matt enjoys the record thoroughly but still finds time to insult the lyrics and the people of Orange County. It all goes down on this episode of It's Not Music!
