Tonight, at 9:30 PM, after a long, stressful day and scant sleep, Damian hits the treadmill with a nagging Achilles stiffness that's haunted him since returning to Australia. Lucy Gossage has been around on the long distance triathlon scene for a long time, and she's instantly recognisable with her blue Erdinger kit and infectious smile. If you don't know Lucy, she has 14 Ironman victories to her name including IMUK, IM Wales, IM Lanzarote and Patagonman (basically all the toughest ones). In 2019 she stepped back from IM racing to focus more on her work as an Oncologist in Nottingham. You'll get a sense of how Lucy likes to challenge herself with that race resume, and today's conversation is all about another of those challenges. And they don't really come much bigger than The Winter Spine Challenge - 268 miles on the Pennine Way in the depths of winter.   It's a non-stop event requiring participants to be self sufficient. The temperature barely gets above 0ºC, with knee deep snow and blizzards at times, and as if that's not enough the sleep deprivation can literally be a nightmare. We chat about:   Weekly power strength yoga - "I just knew that I had to get as strong as I could"   The benefits of commuting to work and keeping it fun Walking poles in ultra racing - "As soon as I got them, I was like, oh my god, these are a game changer." Sleep walking - "The most terrifying discombobulating experience I've ever had." Shoe selection - "I went with Hoka Speedgoats, which many say is crazy for that terrain. But they were so comfortable." Helen worked in education for 25 years, before a mixture of itchy feet, curiosity, passion for sport... and some chance discussions with elite level athletes at her triathlon club - prompted her to pivot into her new career. Now Helen is a fully chartered and HCPC registered Sport Psychologist, working with Swim England, the Cambridge Women's University Rowing Team and various commonwealth and Paralympic medalists. Doug Eidd, owner of Doug's Gym, the oldest barbell gym in America at the time of its closing in 2018, joins us today to share his perspective on health and fitness after over 60 years of experience training himself and thousands of others. In his own words, after a lifetime of training he has realized he already knew what he needed to know at 16, when he began training with weights to develop his strength and build muscular size.   Looking for work after the Korean War, Doug briefly considered PT school but was steered away by a friend in the field struggling to make ends meet (the nascent industry had yet to fully integrate with the existing healthcare system, and did not bill insurance at the time). Instead he entered the gym business, opening Doug's Gym in downtown Dallas in 1962. Doug's was one of just a few gyms in the area, but as bodybuilding began to enter mainstream American culture, demand for gyms grew, and the term "working out" entered the lexicon of modern working man.   Doug has since trained thousands upon thousands of people, and seen fitness trends and fads come and go. He still relies on the old, basic barbell lifts for the core of any training program, and he preaches moderation in diet and lifestyle. One might chuckle at his moderation comment, as you were likely to find Doug toking his meerschaum pipe in his office while reading the newspaper, but Doug still trains with weights 5 days a week, moves around with ease, and possesses a sharp and curious mind -- at 88 years of age.   You don't have to take it from us... listen to Doug. Dan Cenidoza interview with Bob Whelan - NATURAL STRENGTH NIGHT podcast - (episode 34) - 31 January 17 Tonight our guest is Dan Cenidoza. I have known Dan for about 15 years. He lived in Maryland, north of Baltimore when I lived in Washington, DC. Dan made the long drive several times to workout at my gym Whelan Strength Training. Dan is one of the best high quality, and most well rounded guys I know. A true family man who really gets what life is about. Dan had the Farmers Walk record at WST, usually done after the workout. We used a pair of Atomic Athletic utensils loaded to 110 pounds each and we competed by who had the least amount of times putting down the weights to finish the course. Most people put them down 20 times or more to finish. Dan had the record with one. He was the only trainee to carry 110 pounds in each hand (220 total) around the entire city block surrounding the gym, only putting them down once. Dan used to leave various metal objects on my desk almost every time he came. These were things like metal bars and objects that he had bent and twisted into all sorts of designs and shapes. I was building quite a scrap metal collection in my office from Dan. His car was filled with phone books, nails and other tools of the strongman trade and he would do various feats too after his workout was done. Dan is a certified "Captain of Crush" and I have seen him close my Iron Mind number # 3 gripper with ease on several occasions. He competes as a Strong Man and he won the "Maryland Strongest Man" contest and has also been a 6 time National Qualifier. Dan has a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science from Towson State University and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. He holds other fitness certifications as well. Dan has also spent time working with the Baltimore Ravens. He has written several articles for Natural Strength.com and Strong First.com Dan is also involved with boxing and the martial arts too. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we learn how to become a better shooter from Joel Turner, owner of Iron Mind Hunting. Joel’s instruction is much different from any other shooting instruction I have ever received. This is a quote from Joel that touches on his philosophy. “People get stuck in the rut of thinking tactics and gadgets will solve their problems. What I am here to show you is it’s not the tools you have but the system you must have in place to be effective.” At first glance, it is easy to dismiss Joel’s ideas and training as “snake oil” or as the same thing you’ve heard from countless other efficient shooters. But, although seeming subtle, I found Joel’s ideas and teaching methods profoundly different from anything I have heard before. I cannot recommend Joel Turner’s shooter-training enough. Whether you are a seasoned shooter or new to the game, Joel is an effective teacher with an Iron Mind. You don’t want to miss this podcast.   At the end of this podcast Joel shares some deep thoughts on how to call-in big bulls using what he calls the “Bull Calling Cows” bugle. Recoil bracing - input into the shot - it happens when we anticipate the explosion Seek controlled shot *under pressure* - be able to stop shot at any time “Do not shoot an arrow unless it’s perfectly controlled.” Speech and movement are linked - fix speech pattern to fix movement No slow movement - wasting muscle energy and increase fatigue ***Draw Sequence*** Draw - get it done, stick it on there Aim - put your pin on it - watch it to keep it - compare to driving, keep it between the lines - keep pulling - compare to football player “keep running!”  *keep means to continue* - put concentration in to movement that makes bow go off - slow steady pressure *DO NOT speed up words* - to speed up shot, increase aggression instead of speed   “Good concentration equals good shooting.” Closed loop - controlled, can stop shot at any time - DESIRED Open loop - movements lead to actions, can’t stop shot sequence - open loop shooters will “only get as good as your recoil bracing allows you to.” **Need to be able to switch from open loop to closed loop when necessary Snap Shot - efficient, not necessarily accurate - good hunters, calm killers but not consistent 3D shooters Shooting is all about concentration and control.  Do not go on auto-pilot. Shooting is simple, but it’s not easy.
