That tap-tap, tap-tap at the beginning of “Blister in the Sun” may be one of rock's most air-drummed fills, and former Violent Femmes drummer Victor DeLorenzo explains how the song's indelible intro came to be. He shares many more stories about this Milwaukee band, including the name's origin, the invention of his tranceaphone and the jaw-dropping tale of how the Pretenders discovered Violent Femmes busking outside the theater and invited the trio to open for them that night. Violent Femmes' instant-classic self-titled debut sounded like nothing else, the third album was produced by Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison, and after five studio albums, DeLorenzo had had enough. He tells of his ongoing acting career that included a tryout for Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, his reaction to the "Blister" Wendy's ad and his up-and-down relationship with his former bandmates.
Brian Ritchie, bassist for the folk punk band the Violent Femmes, joins host Kenneth Womack on this episode to chat about his first Beatles records and the 40th anniversary of the Femmes' debut album. Ritchie co-founded the Violent Femmes with percussionist Victor DeLorenzo in 1981, and the duo were later joined by singer-songwriter Gordon Gano. Ritchie came up with band's distinctive name on a whim, employing it during their early days playing in Milwaukee's coffee houses. In August 1981, the Violent Femmes were discovered performing on a street corner in front of the Oriental Theatre by James Honeyman-Scott, the guitarist for the Pretenders, and Chrissie Hynde invited the Femmes to play an acoustic set prior to the Pretenders' show that night. In 1983, the Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut album, which emerged as a key soundtrack for the burgeoning alternative and college-oriented rock movements. The inaugural LP featured many of the band's best-known songs, including “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” “Add It Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” The album became the Femmes' most successful LP, eventually earning platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Over the years, the Femmes have recorded 10 studio albums, including Hallowed Ground (1984), The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), and Why Do Birds Sing? (1991). The group is widely considered to be a key influence on the 1980s and 1990s alternative rock scene. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support
For the 40th anniversary of Violent Femmes' classic debut album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo first started playing around Milwaukee as a rhythm section, they met a teenage songwriter named Gordon Gano. Despite having limited experience and still just being in high school, Gano had an extraordinary set of good songs that he had already written. Violent Femmes began playing as a trio but weren't able to get many gigs in town so they started playing acoustically on the street. One day they decided to play for a line of people outside the Oriental Theater who were there to see the Pretenders. James Honeyman-Scott was on a break from soundcheck and became interested in this band playing outside the theater. He convinced the rest of the Pretenders to listen and Chrissie Hynde ended up inviting the Femmes to open for them that night. Though the impromptu gig didn't lead to other opportunities, it gave them a boost of confidence to continue doing what they were doing. Shake Records became interested in releasing an album so they booked studio time with producer Mark Van Hecke. The label deal fell through but they decided to keep the studio time with the help of a loan from DeLorenzo's father. The recordings they made ended up on Slash Records' radar and they eventually released the Violent Femmes debut album as is in 1983. In this episode, Gordon Gano reflects on being a bored and lonely teenager who had a drive to write songs as a way to get out frustration. Brian Ritchie describes his unconventional approach to the acoustic bass guitar that helps give Violent Femmes their signature sound. Victor DeLorenzo offers his perspective on using brushes, a snare drum and his invention called the trancephone in order to have a simple setup that could be moved easily and played on the street. From being booed by thousands of Milwaukeans to punk music played acoustically to embracing the improvisation of Sun Ra to the first album as a mixtape that continues to get passed between generations, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Interview with Singer-songwriter Multi-instrumentalist Darwin Meiners! Night Crickets, a long-distance groove affair conducted during the drawn-out days of lockdown and beyond. Featuring David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin Meiners. Iconic and foundational bands in the history of alternative music certainly include Bauhaus, Love And Rockets, and Violent Femmes. San Francisco-born artist Darwin Meiners was a fan of all three. A chance meeting 13 years ago with David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) grew into a friendship, and Darwin not only became a bandmate but David J's manager. After reaching out to Victor DeLorenzo through e-mail, Darwin met the Violent Femmes drummer after the Femmes' Coachella set in 2013. Soon after the three collaborated on Darwin's 2014 release Souvenir. As the pandemic took hold, Darwin was looking for a new project to occupy the lock-down time and approached Victor, who was keen to proceed and suggested that David join as well. The musical trust established between these three was immediate and Night Crickets were born. Within weeks a global process was initiated between them, the recordings eventually forming the album, A Free Society. To say this is something of a dream come true for music fans would be entirely accurate. (The band's name came from one of many Zoom meetings between the three members. After addressing various pressing musical issues the conversation rambled somewhat and turned to the subject of David Lynch, with David J telling an anecdote which was told to him by Lynch's sound designer, John Neff. Lynch had asked Neff to obtain a field recording of crickets chirping at night for inclusion in Mulholland Drive. When Neff played him the tape, the director immediately recognized the sound that the insects make when it is light which is apparently a little different to their nocturnal chirp. “No! No! No! These are day crickets, John! I want my night crickets!” Victor, Darwin, and David then shared a look of mutual realization and instantly agreed that the project now had a name!) In Night Crickets' own words: Night Crickets, a long distance groove affair conducted during the drawn out days of lockdown and beyond. Audio files shared from Los Angeles to Milwaukee, from London to the San Francisco Bay, and the ghosts of Candlestick Park shimmer through the fog, the Devil comes a-knocking on Peter Laughner's door and Amanda Gorman conjures forth words of inspiration for the dawn of the new millennium. David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin spearhead a loose collective of like-minded creative souls left stranded in their respective locales due to the great pandemic, yet through sheer tenacity and a burning desire to collaborate and create they transcend the restrictions of the times and pull together a glorious ‘gesamtkunstwerk' that draws from the past, the present and the imagined future. Interview with Victor DeLorenzo Of Violent Femmes & The Night Crickets DeLorenzo was born in 1954, the son of Victor and Charlotte DeLorenzo, grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and has lived in Milwaukee since. He has been a drummer since the age of 16 while attending St. Catherine's High School (Racine, Wisconsin), and has been an actor since the age of five. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, he auditioned for and was accepted into Theatre X in 1976, and worked with them in various roles for more than 20 years.[ As a drummer, DeLorenzo paired up with bassist Brian Ritchie in 1980, as a rhythm section they called "Violent Femmes". When singer, guitarist, and songwriter Gordon Gano joined them in 1981, the band kept the name.[2] DeLorenzo's father loaned the band $10,000 to record their eponymous debut album in 1982. However, the band was forced to delay its release until 1983 after they signed to Slash Records. DeLorenzo's signature sound is a result of his minimalist drum kit. He often uses nothing more than a snare drum, a tranceaphone and steel brushes. The tranceaphone consists of a metal bushel basket inverted over a tom. He favors this style of kit because in their early days, the band often played on the streets. DeLorenzo continued to act with Theatre X, and record and tour with the Femmes until 1993, when he left to devote more time to acting and to recording his own music. He toured as part of Moe Tucker's band in that year. In 1996 he opened a recording studio called "Joe's Real Recording" He has released three solo records since 1990. In addition to recording his own music, he has played with several side projects, including Ash Can School. In 2000, he teamed up with Ritchie to put together a Femmes compilation, and subsequently rejoined the band until it disbanded again in 2009.In March 2013, Gano, Ritchie and DeLorenzo reformed Violent Femmes once more and played a homecoming show at the Summerfest music festival in their native Milwaukee. Three months later, in July, the band announced a new line-up with Dresden Dolls member Brian Viglione as the band's drummer. DeLorenzo confirmed in a statement that he had left the Femmes permanently because of a failure of the band members to resolve their long-standing business disputes. DeLorenzo performs percussion in the chamber rock duo Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. Nineteen Thirteen's recording of "Hurricane Noel" was featured in the 2011 TED Global Conference. Interview with David J of Bauhaus, The Night Crickets On David J Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction once described David J as the Avant of the Avant-garde. Never was a truer word spoken . . . A founder member of one of the most influential bands since The Velvet Underground; namely BAUHAUS. Bauhaus spearheaded the post-punk Alternative music scene of the early ‘80's with a string of innovative albums and singles, including, for many, perhaps their defining moment, a song that is ranked as a classic and feasibly the pinnacle of the entire Gothic scene and beyond, the nine minute plus epic slab of industrial dub that is 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', featuring the lyrics of David J. For fans of Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, Violent Femmes, and even David Lynch (He indirectily contributed), "Night Crickets" maintain the talents of Victor DeLorenzo, Darwin Meiners, and David J. What began as 3 friends being fans of eachother's work and talent, inspired by a quirky statement from David Lynch, we have the project "Night Crickets" which is how you would imagine the sounds of thought coming from such genieus. They cover music history, sociopolitical events from long past, and what is current. The creativity of what these guys can come up with is unmatched. You just listen and enjoy the "Visuals" you get from listening. The inspiration you get from theses guys is from decades of experimental art rock, and the unconventional thinking to give you great music. The stuff you were impressed by from listening to Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Violent Femmes, have managed to still root themselves into this new sound. This requires more than a dosen listens, because their work is always giving you something to think about each time through. spotify #candlestickpark #beatlesconcert #davidlynch #protestsongs #lesterbangs #peterloeffner #loureed #johncale #motucker #peterhook #neworder #fakenews #joydivision #80s #newwave #moviesoundtracks #thefemininecomplex #sterlingmorrison #theveletundergound #kevinhaskins #loveandrockets #violentfemmes #bauhaus #thejazzbutcher #petermurphy #danielash

“Black Leather On The Inside” Victor DeLorenzo rose to global prominence as the drummer for the Violent Femmes—but he did really cool stuff before that and really cool stuff after. An actor since the age of five, after college DeLorenzo was a member of Theatre X, a pretty punk rock and way ahead of its time improv theatre group, who performed all over the world. He formed the Violent Femmes with Brian Ritchie in 1980 and although the group toured and recorded pretty exhaustively, DeLorenzo still stayed involved with Theater X. A minimalist drummer who comes armed with a spare kit and steel brushes, DeLorenzo is one of the most innovative players in modern music. His rhythms roll and swing with precision and finesse and his flourishes are infectious, powerful and stirring. After parting ways with the Femmes, DeLorenzo toured with the Velvet Underground's Moe Tucker, put out a handful of marvelous solo albums, opened a recording studio, and formed a chamber rock duo called Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. But that's not all. Astrid Young comes from a long line of creative people. Her father is legendary writer, journalist, & author Scott Young. And her brother is...well her brother is Neil Young. Those are some tough acts to follow. Astrid talks about growing up and getting into music in her own way. She describes what it was like when Neil asked her to sing on Harvest Moon. There are some great stories about the Unplugged show and Road Rock. She's also done some cool work with Nancy Wilson, Heart, and her own solo work, which is clearly different from her brother's music. She's played metal, desert rock, folk, and some wild alternative music. And she wrote and starred in a movie and wrote a biography (which she is considering expanding on, with the help of her brothers). Her latest album features Victor DeLorenzo on drums and the Integratron. Definitely look into the album and the structure. Give her a follow on IG @wandaplez to keep up with what she's up to. Indie legend Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes appears on the latest installment of Gone In 30 Minutes to chat about life on the big, blue(ish) marble. A seminal figure of punk, Ritchie thinks back to his upbringing in Milwaukee, the band’s…let’s say…less-than-ideal deal with Slash Records and the incessant nature of music itself. And Ritchie hasn’t stopped either—in addition to curating for annual music and arts festival MONA FOMA, in his homeland of Tasmania, he’s been broadcasting daily performances so we never lose touch of that “American Music.”
SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE When a new band finds the right name for itself, it's magic. They don't always get it right the first time. Imagine if “Jeremy” was released by Mookie Blaylock. Or if The Hype did “With or Without You”. Or the Young Aborigines scored a hit with “Sabotage”. Those band names do not support the attitude & spirit of the songs. Thankfully inspiration gave us the far more dead-on Pearl Jam, U2 and the Beastie Boys. And those are three of dozens of famous bands that took some trial and error to nail the name. Violent Femmes, however, killed it right off. Sure, it was intended as an off the cuff joke name. But as soon as the two founding members, Brian Ritchie and Victor DeLorenzo, discovered Gordon Gano, it made perfect sense. Brian and Victor had the post-punk rhythm and attitude with an extra shot of weirdness. Gordon had the singing chops - nasal weird kid-like talk-singing that fit so well, and songs that spoke openly about sensitive, painful, awkward feelings without the defensiveness that often pushes singer/songwriters to macho it up. It was raw and new and instantly worked. Their music embodied both the violent “masculine” emotional confusion all adolescents feel, and the vulnerability of undressed honesty often associated with a person's “feminine” side. And by doing so without apology it showed all that masculine-feminine stuff is bullcrap. There's no reason to label what a person feels, how they act, or how they express themselves. Open up and say whatever comes out. Get angry and aggressive. Get confessional and insecure. It's all just being a complete and truly vulnerable human. Did they intend for their name to represent all this? Or their music for that matter? No. The synergy was accidental. The unadorned arrangements (acoustic bass AND drums with no kick!), vocals and words just happened to come together to embody the exact gender duality the name hints at. And they did it with an in-your-face, we don't care what you think folk punk attitude that influenced a whole generation of bands. They were pre-emo - one of the seminal 1980s bands that gave permission for tons of other bands to get confessional without defense. And I'm included in that group. Whenever I'd write lyrics that felt too raw and revealing, I looked to the Femmes (and the Cure and few others) to reassure me that I didn't need to hide the words behind aggressive music. Below are an early-ish song and a much more recent one that both show this. NICK – “You Can't Touch Me” (from the album Listen You People) REC – “Lost Found” (from the album Sympathy for the Weird) Do you remember the Femmes? Did you know they just put out a new album last year? Are there other bands you like who hold this same kind of duality? Discuss dammit! WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 024 Gary Tanin / Daystorm Music Audio Engineer, Music Producer, and Publicist Gary Tanin (born Gary Stefan Tanin, 19 September 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a veteran Milwaukee musician/producer/engineer with a career spanning decades and reflecting two central themes: music and technology. Biography At age 16, Tanin had already laid the foundation for his calling when landed a record deal with Odessa Records, recording his original material. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee during the early 70's, Tanin apprenticed as an audio engineer at ARCO Recording Studios where he studied the Art and Science of audio recording and production. In the mid 70s he released the critically acclaimed, self-produced concept album Otto & The Elevators. In the early 80's he foresaw the unique possibility of combining newly emerging computer technology with music. He produced dozens of artists during the 70s and 80s. He has had numerous articles published in industry publications, including the CMC Source Book and AfterTouch(tm). These special interests led to Tanin's work with garageband.com co-founder Jerry Harrison (of the rock band Talking Heads). Harrison contributed to Sublime Nation, Tanin's 1995 solo CD released by MultiMusicaUSA. In addition to Sublime Nation, Gary has released several national critically acclaimed CDs of his own and produced local, national, and international artists. Tanin's Japanese/US release, XPensive Dogs, is an intercontinental fusion of east and west. A follow-up to XPensive Dogs, entitled DOG EAT DOG, was released in 2004. Japanese label Hard Disc International released XPensive Dogs, and Sublime Nation was released in Japan on the Mouse Records imprint. Tanin's entire catalog is being distributed in the US by RockIt Records (USA).[3] Gary Tanin has produced for bands like the BoDeans, Monovox, and Sam Llanas, and mastering for the likes of ex-Violent Femmes drummer Victor DeLorenzo and Daryl Stuermer (of Phil Collins and Genesis fame). Tanin has won the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Producer Of The Year Awards for 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010.[4] He was an active past member of the Audion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ www.WisconsinMusicPodcast.com/podcast Sponsored by: Diamond Dave Photography www.facebook.com/DiamondDavePhotography ZTF Studio www.ZTFstudio.com Podcast Song written by Nate Wycoff and has a recording studio at https://www.frequencyfarmrecordingstudio.com/ Voice Over Intro by Dean Bundy Syndicated on www.cwHipHop.com with Jacob Haimer------------------------------------------------------------ #WisconsinMusicPodcast #WisconsinMusic #WisconsinMusician #ZTFStudio #podcasting #podcastlife #podcasters #bhfyp #PodernFamily #Supportlocalmusic #Supportlocalmusicians #Milwaukee

Has anyone managed to pass through puberty without being slipped a copy of the Violent Femmes' debut album from 1983? It's become a rite of passage - every generation passes it down to the next. This week we talk to original drummer Victor DeLorenzo about his time in the band (he left many years ago), how they found their name and style, the album covers, his acting career, and his current musical project Nineteen Thirteen which is him and cellist Janet Schiff. He also released a new ep this year called Tranceaphone. Unfortunately, there were some technical problems, but we did the best we could to clean them up. Enjoy! www.nineteenthirteen.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Original Violent Femmes drummer Victor DeLorenzo and his Nineteen Thirteen bandmate/cellist Janet Schiff discuss their own relationships with vinyl over the years, the unique sounds they're creating as a portable two-piece band and how a chance meeting at a diner spawned their musical kinship. Janet recalls "inventing" her own cello as a child, spinning records in her makeshift basement roller rink and whether or not to buy your bandmate's classic LP while he's in the record store with you, while Victor talks about the iconic artwork of the Femmes' self-titled debut and sets the record straight on their now legendary gig opening for The Pretenders at Milwaukee's Oriental Theatre in 1981, plus how it feels to have sports fans in packed stadiums around the world clapping along with his seminal percussion on "Blister In The Sun." Check out their two most recent albums, Music For Time Travel and The Dream, on Spotify and visit nineteenthirteen.com for upcoming gigs, their social media and more!

Another Wednesday, another edition of Canadian Musician Radio. With all of these great summer festivals and tours, we've been able to deliver a heap of artist interviews, and this week is no different. Join us as we catch up with Juno-winning six-piece "folk popgrass" outfit The Strumbellas, singer-songwriter Astrid Young (also the half-sister of the one and only Neil), and Ryan McCambridge. The Strumbellas are playing summer festivals across Canada and the U.S. this summer, continuing to promote the sophomore album, We Still Move Dance Floors. While its predecessor, My Father and the Hunter, was nominated for a Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year in 2013,We Still Move Dance Floors actually took the trophy earlier in 2014 and was recently long-listed for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. They're more focused than ever now, and we'll find out why. Musician, composer, actor, author screenwriter, and sommelier Astrid Young released her fourth solo record, One Night at Giant Rock, at the end of June. In a special performance, Young is kicking off her "psychedelic acid folk" tour in southern Ontario in late July and will work her way west. The album, featuring Victor DeLorenzo of the Violent Femmes is a collection of songs that reflect her personal discovery of the karmic meaning of all her relationships. She speaks about the long gaps between records, some of her other musical endeavors, and more. Finally, in addition to being a studio engineer who's been the right hand man of producer/engineer David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Tool, Dream Theater), Ryan McCambridge has been making music under the moniker of A Calmer Collision. We talk about the sonic balance he's struck between modern rock and electronica as well as how his experience in the studio informs his work as a musician and more.
