In this episode, I'm joined by my longtime friend and world traveler, Nzingha Clarke . Nzingha offers a sharp and succinct reflection on the last five years of political complexity in America. With her verbal eloquence, she shares a deeply personal account of her experiences with gentrification in New York City—specifically through the lens of her life in Harlem and her efforts to protect her family home.Nzingha is one of my favorite thinkers. Her global travels have given her a multidimensional perspective on almost every subject, which consistently brings a refreshing take and an engaging listening experience. One thing is certain: Nzingha's words in this episode sound like a heartfelt love letter to Harlem.

Welcome to the TeachHER Podcast Powered by The Innocent Brown Girl Project. Our mission is to convey strategies for Grit & Grace with educators and advocates of African American and Latina Girls. Thank you for joining us today. Today, our guest is Dawn D. Florence. Dawn D. Florence is the loving wife of a retired U.S. Naval Officer; proud mother of three extraordinary adult children; dedicated, life-long educator; and the Founder and President of Little Sistahs in the Know, Inc. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Little Sistahs in the Know (LSK) has taken an asset-based approach to empowering girls to seize their future. For nearly two decades, it has been LSK's mission to build high self-esteem and foster a positive self-image in African American girls by bringing them together to read and discuss books written about them, by providing a venue for them to share ideas and express themselves, and by cultivating an awareness of their rich heritage and culture. Born and raised in New Jersey, but has lived all over; from Mobile, AL to Northern CA to Southeastern VA to Southern CA to Naples, Italy, Dawn received an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Spelman College and a master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering. A self-proclaimed, chronic career switcher – software engineer, college instructor, preschool computer teacher, stay-at-home mom (a.k.a. COO of Florence Family Enterprises), substitute teacher, non-profit corporation founder and president, elementary school office automation technician – Dawn completed Regent University's Career Switcher Program in 2012 and became a math teacher at Norview Middle School in Norfolk, VA. A published author, Dawn's journey is shared in Chapter 4, “My Eighth Life,” of We Switched Career! Alternative Licensure Teacher's Journey's to the Classroom. During her tenure at Norview Middle School, Dawn and her team developed a school-based, extended day model program for Little Sistahs in the Know. In addition to the hundreds of girls touched by LSK's home-based program, LSK's school program has positively impacted the lives of dozens of Little Sistahs during their educational experiences. In 2019, Dawn became a marketing teacher at Norview High School, where she recently entered her 11th year in secondary education. Today, Dawn continues her work to carry out the mission of Little Sistahs in the Know with programming at Norview High School. What began on August 21, 2005, in the living room of their Chula Vista, CA home as a “book club” for Dawn's oldest daughter, Ayanna, and a few other girls who looked like her and their moms, continues to empower African Americans girls 3,000 miles away in Norfolk, VA. Through a love of reading, an appreciation of their culture, and the knowledge of their rich heritage, while strengthening the bonds of sisterhood, it continues to be Dawn's purpose and passion to build up our girls…one book at a time! Dawn currently resides in Chesapeake, VA with her husband Dennis, their two young adult children, Nzingha and Baraka (Ayanna has spread her wings and left the nest!) and their furry family members: Mufasa, Pip, and Ms. Rex. Nzingha Stewart is an NAACP Image Award-nominated director. A graduate of NYU, she started her career in music videos, shooting for artists like Common, Eve, Jay-Z, and 50 Cent, before going on to a successful career as a commercial director. Then transitioned to film and television where her work includes the Emmy-Nominated limited series Inventing Anna, Maid, and Little Fires Everywhere as well as Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Netflix's Tall Girl. She is the producing director and co-executive producer on From Scratch. Nzingha is someone I admire for her vision, sublime creative sensibilities, her leadership as a female producer, and her big heart. There is no one you'd rather go to dinner with than Nzingha, she will make you try everything and order double desserts. I love her “yes, and” approach to life. You can see her vision and heart all over the first episode of From Scratch. About the Guest: Nzingha Stewart attended NYU's Gallatin School and upon graduation went on to shoot over a hundred music videos for artists like Common, Eve, Jay-Z, and 50 Cent breaking down barriers for women of color in the music video world along the way. An equally in-demand commercial director, Nzingha has also filmed clips for ESPN, McDonald's, and Coors Light among others. Having recently directed episodes of Little Fires Everywhere, Black Monday, Greys Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Good Girls, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, the Netflix hit feature film Tall Girl, and Shonda Rhimes upcoming series Inventing Anna, she has also proven herself as a writer, having written With This Ring and The Tenth Date (Lifetime/ A+E Networks) which she also directed. Both movies were ratings hits for the network and With This Ring went on to be nominated for three NAACP awards and won the Women In Film Award for Best Television Movie. Nzingha is the executive producer of Netflix's From Scratch. Recently, she was the executive producer of Daisy Jones and the Six for Amazon and Hello Sunshine. She sold her co-written script, Bad Ass Biker Chicks of Marrakech to Wayfarer for which she is also set to direct. On the very spot where the transatlantic slave trade began, in modern-day Angola, the most epic fight for liberation in our history was waged between the entire Portuguese Empire and one Black woman. Standing toe-to-toe. Them and her. Queen Nzinga. Say her name. We are the #daughters of Queen Nzinga Mbande. Queen of the Ambundu Kingdoms of the ruling family of Ndongo and great sovereign power of Matamba. Ohhh that’s delicious. Let it roll off your tongues: Nzzzzinga, Nzingha, Njinga. Her name alone defies the English alphabet, spelled differently across history. No matter how you spell her name, one thing is certain, trained in military precision and political warfare, young Nzinga defeated the colonizers, protected her people for 37 years, and set into motion a liberation movement that would ultimately defeat the colonizers. We will not be your slaves. Adjust your crowns queens, we’re going in. This is the greatest story never told. Join GirlTrek’s Black History Bootcamp - 21 Cosmonauts at blackhistorybootcamp.com to receive specially curated emails with survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each episode. In this unapologetically African-centered monograph, Nwando Achebe considers the diverse forms and systems of female leadership in both the physical and spiritual worlds, as well as the complexities of female power in a multiplicity of distinct African societies. From Amma to the goddess inkosazana, Sobekneferu to Nzingha, Nehanda to Ahebi Ugbabe, Omu Okwei, and the daughters or umuada of Igboland, Female Monarchs and Merchant Queens in Africa (Ohio University Press, 2020) documents the worlds and life histories of elite African females, female principles, and (wo)men of privilege. Chronologically and by theme, Nwando Achebe pieces together the worlds and experiences of African females from African-derived sources, especially language. Achebe explores the meaning and significance of names, metaphors, symbolism, cosmology, chronicles, songs, folktales, proverbs, oral traditions, traditions of creation, and more. From centralized to small-scale egalitarian societies, patrilineal to matrilineal systems, North Africa to sub-Saharan lands, Female Monarchs and Merchant Queens in Africa offers an unparalleled history of the remarkable African women who occupied positions of power, authority, and influence. In the first episode of Escape With Nate, I sit down with my friend Nzingha Stewart, the incredible writer, director (Little Fires Everywhere, Grey’s Anatomy) and purveyor of superb destinations. In the episode, Nzingha reveals her favorite travel destination of all time – Morocco! She shares with me how she fell in love with not only the country, but her now husband, Mouhssine; and the three Moroccan weddings that followed. No, that is not a typo – three weddings, all to the same man. Nzingha discusses how writing a location based script during the pandemic has given her a way to travel differently, and how she strongly advocates (when it's safe again) that all women find opportunities to travel -- as if their lives depended on it. Finally, she breaks down her packing rituals, which rival that of even the most experienced travelers in the game. Don’t miss this inaugural episode of Escape With Nate. Produced by 31 Dogwood Productions & Tasty Shop Media. Production Sound Design by Wein Designs. Escape with Nate is brought to you by Entertainment Speakers Bureau.

The family will be present." And Frank Graham, father of the slain teen, said they'd keep fighting for justice. “If it means going back to the grand jury or if we have to ask the federal court to deal with this case; we are going to keep fighting no matter what,” he said in a statement. “Where ever it leads us we will go there.
