In this episode of #JCsMusicology, we analyse the early works of Erykah Badu. Also known as Badulla Oblongata. Also known as Sara Bellum. Also known as Analogue Girl in a Digital World. As part of the holy trinity of Neo-soul albums in the late 90's, Erykah Badu realeased "Baduizm" to critical acclaim, generating four singles and two Grammy Awards. Her follow up, "Mama's Gun" would meet similar sucess with it's accolades and critical reception. Before taking a five year hiatus, her third studio album "Worldwide Underground" would be yet another progression in her artistic expression, accentuating live instrumentation and varying vocal styles. DJ Big D and Dayslayer talk to Vince Lawrence, Chicago House Music Pioneer, from South Central LA via phone. This conversation was set up by our segment producer, Keenan King aka DJ Naneek Divad. Vince shares his upbringing, history of song "On and On" with Jesse Saunders, record pools, what happened that night in Comisky Park, 40 years ago, at Disco Demolition Night, promoted by Steve Dahl. And questions why would the Chicago White Sox celebrate it 40 years later? Vince Lawrence discusses the societal atmosphere in Chicago and the rest of the US from the 1970's to today. He takes us on a journey of his entrepreneurial mind as a young teenager and he mentions how he launched multiple record labels and sold records from his trunk, pre Master P. This podcast is an amazing journey of a young talented Black kid from the Southside of Chicago. A must listen and share episode. HOW TO ACTUALLY LOVE YOUR BODY. Welcome to episode 4 of the Free Spirit Academy podcast, How to Actually Love Your Body. This episode is gonna be a little different in that I'm not interviewing anyone, rather I'm gonna be talking about my perspective on self-acceptance and body love. The common experience I see is that we believe we need to DO something to be self loving or to love our bodies. Like, we have this deep sense that life in a body you love is a beautiful thing and we're right...but then we think we need to make a change or lose the weight in order to feel that beauty. I disagree. Can we have preferences for the way our body looks? Sure. But if we're pushing, forcing, molding, restricting, and dissaproving of our body ON THE WAY to a body we assume we'll love, it won't be sustainable. Because even if we do manage to willpower our way through a weight loss program, there will be a constant underlying fear that we'll end up back in that awful self-loathing place if we don't keep the weight off. Today's episode is for you if you have been on diet after diet, spent a huge chunk of your energy trying to "fix" yourself, constantly compare yourself and your body with other women, hide in your clothes, and perhaps feel that everything will be "alright" once you lose the weight. Or perhaps you're part of the intuitive eating and body positive communities. Perhaps you've given up dieting and tried desperately to accept your body and it just. isn't. happening. You look in the mirror and try to love the cellulite but all you get is tears. Perhaps you feel like you SHOULD love your body if you're a good feminist or truly body positive. Maybe you've told yourself over and over that your body is amazing because it WALKS and GIVES BIRTH and ON AND ON...but you just don't feel it. NOT loving your body is just one more thing you feel like you're doing wrong. Let me assure you, you're doing nothing wrong. There are no wrongs steps on the journey to body freedom, just steps that feel good and ones that don't. Steps that get us closer to being who we truly are and steps that shift us further from that experience. Links mentioned: Body Love full course. Free Spirit Academy website. Jonathan Karrant was born in the heart of America at the foothills of the Ozarks in the old western town of Fort Smith, Arkansas east of the Arkansas River. His recent album “On and On” made it to number four in the All About Jazz charts. The album features such songs as “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” and “Doodlin’”, as well as the title track, and was produced by Tyler Monks, with pianist Josh Nelson, bassist Rob Thorsen, guitarist Mark Shapiro, and drummer Duncan Moore. Audiences have characterized Jonathan as a great interpreter of song, a storyteller, a singer who brings music and lyric alive. Some refer to Jonathan as an amazing song-stylist who sings from the American songbook, an entertainer of star quality. Others say he paints a picture, he presents a mood and captivates a room through song. Jazz Corner said “Karrant’s voice is romantic without being cloying, warm but not forced” and “that he sings standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as if he had written the songs himself”. He will tell you that he has an innate connection with music writers of the past, masters like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Sammie Cahn, Julie Styne, Johnny Mercer, to mention a few. He will tell you that he has great respect for such giants as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Little Jimmy Scott, Nancy Wilson and Johnny Hartman. Singer/songwriter Stephen 'Bish' Bishop, best known for top of the chart hits like 'On And On,' 'Separate Lives,' and the theme from Tootsie, 'It Might Be You,' joins host Robin Milling to play and chat about his new album Be Here Then. A fanatical Beatles fan since seeing them on The Ed Sullivan Show, Stephen tells Robin about his dream of being asked to join the group by John and Paul! Stephen has come a long way since going door to door to music publishers playing them his music in hopes of getting signed. He tells Robin he even gave Barbra Streisand and her then beau, Jon Peters a private concert in her home when they were shopping for A Star Is Born songs. 'They made out on the couch and I sang songs!' Stephen performs the first single, 'Pretty Baby,' from his new CD, a beautiful acoustic version of 'Separate Lives,' which was covered by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin, confirming it was written about his break-up with Indiana Jones actress Karen Allen. Writing songs since he was 13 there is one he didn't write, It Might Be You, which he sung for the film Tootsie, and performs here. Stephen also reveals his hidden talents doing a mean Billie Holiday impression. Click here for your free audiobook: www.audibletrial.com/millingabout

Jeff Adams – For Real ® — Episode 3 © 2012 Jeff Adams – For Real All Rights Reserved In this episode are a bunch of live performances, barely edited, for your perusal. On And On, Bessie Mae, Memo To The Senate, Future Perfect, and Presence Of Love. And all I gotta say is…wow.
At this time in our lives, we're witnesses to many global events that will continue to affect each one of us. It's amazing how much rhetoric as opposed to solutions we seem to get from those who CAN change things. We hear promises repeated only to find out they are or were just words. We find ourselves asking a repeated question "Will it ever end?" Only to come to the same conclusion it goes On And On.
Songwriters are very special people. They’re the ones who battle with themselves and suffer through an amazingly creative process that most take for granted. When you listen to the songs that Stephen Bishop has written over his career, you find an honesty and transparency that has allowed him to deliver hits such as On And On and Save It For A Rainy Day. His career actually began as a songwriter long before he wrote songs for himself. In fact, one of his first collaborations was with Art Garfunkel, who discovered his songwriting and vocal talent and invited him to sing and also contribute two tracks to his legendary Breakaway project. He has penned songs for Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Steve Perry, Kenny Loggins, The Four Tops and also Pavarotti. Widening the body of his work, he sang the hit the meIt Might Be You from the movie Tootsie and also has written and sung on 13 other films, including Animal House and White Knights, from which he was nominated for two Grammy’s and an Oscar for his song, Separate Lives. Inside MusiCast welcomes a gifted songwriter, Stephen Bishop.
