The Milwaukee Film Festival returns for another season of inviting film lovers to "enjoy the show." In this episode of Uniquely Milwaukee, we're talking to filmmakers -- including two from Racine -- about stories of resistance and justice.Representing southeastern Wisconsin are Laura Dyan Kezman & William Howell, co-directors of CYCLE, a documentary that explores the narrative of police violence, profiling and accountability through the death of 18-year-old Ty'Rese West of Racine. In June 2019, West was shot two in the head by a Mount Pleasant police officer who stopped him for not having a light on his bicycle.   There was no body camera footage, no witnesses and no charges were filed. Our second conversation is with Elegance Bratton, director of Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, which confronts biased systems and spotlights a movement of freedom, resistance and innovation. The film shares the genres history through the life Vince Lawrence, who in 1984 in Chicago -- along with his friend Jesse Saunders -- recorded what many consider to be the first house song.Episode host: Kim ShineUniquely Milwaukee is sponsored by the Milwaukee Public Library. For more episodes, visit radiomilwaukee.org/ourstories.

For six years, the **Blend LA Podcast** has been a space where House music legends, pioneers, and rising stars come together to share their journeys. From **Chicago to South Africa, London to LA**, we've uncovered untold stories, explored the spiritual and cultural depth of House, and celebrated the global impact of this movement.   We've had the honor of sitting down with **iconic DJs and producers** like Tony Soul, Gene Hunt, Robert Owens, Lady Alma, Jesse Saunders, Wayne Williams, Vince Lawrence, Ultra Naté, Keith Thompson, and so many others who have shaped the sound and spirit of House music. We've connected with trailblazers like Lori Branch, one of the first female DJs in Chicago, and embraced the international energy of artists like Swazi Sunshine, Apiwe Bubu, DJ G, Roxcizzle, Yah Appiah, and Carlos Mena. We've talked about the roots of House, the culture it has built, and how it continues to thrive across generations and borders.   Of course, no episode would be complete without **The Catch-Up**—our candid, raw, and always entertaining commentary. Whether we're cracking jokes, breaking down House culture, or diving into deeper topics, the energy between the hosts keeps it all real.   As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize that **House music is more important now than ever**. In today's political climate—where attacks on **Black culture, LGBTQ+ communities, and artistic expression** are on the rise—House music remains a **sanctuary of freedom, love, and resistance**. Born from **Black, queer, and underground communities**, this genre has always been a voice for the marginalized, a space for unity, and a soundtrack for liberation.   We also honor **Black History Month** by paying tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation for House music, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire future generations. And we're amplifying **Albius' challenge** to all DJs: **Play with intention.** Every beat, every set, every mix should carry purpose, because House is more than music—it's a movement.   And to top it all off, **AMP Collective brings the heat with a soulful House set to celebrate six years of Housing**—a proper way to mark this milestone with deep, uplifting vibes.   So join us as we reflect on the past six years, share behind-the-scenes moments, and look ahead to the future of House music and the Blend LA Podcast. This celebration is for **you**—our listeners, our community, our family.

It's not often we have a bonafide pioneer of dance music on the podcast…   Today I'm in conversation with house music legend Jesse Saunders who holds the impressive accolade of releasing the first ever House record…   …planting the seed that sprouted into the global phenomenon that is dance music today.   In this interview, we follow his journey and learn exactly what the formative years of dance music were really like…   The scene, the people, the creativity and the vibe that kick-started DJing and dance music we know today.   And importantly, the mindset and approach that Jesse takes into the studio and his performances. The same mindset that enabled him to write his name in dance music history.   If you want to make a mark, be an innovator, stand out from the crowd and cut through the noise…   If you are struggling in the studio and want a fun, joyous and spiritual way of writing music that takes the pressure off…   If you have any interest in dance music whatsoever…   Then this is absolutely the podcast for you.   https://finishmoremusic.com/fmm188/

The early 1980s saw the sound of a new generation emerge from the loft parties and underground clubs of Chicago: House music. In spaces like the Warehouse and the Music Box, DJ's began to innovate around disco's four-on-the-floor beat, adding drum machines, deeper bass lines, and synths. At the time, Chicago had its first Black mayor, Harold Washington Jr., and there was optimism and energy in the air, a feeling of progress. After the racist and homophobic cultural attack symbolized by Disco Demolition night at Comiskey Park, for people of color and the queer community, house music was a safe haven. In this episode, Brian talks to Micah Salkind, author of Do You Remember House?: Chicago's Queer of Color Undergrounds; and pioneering House DJs and producers Jesse Saunders, Wayne Williams, and Marshall Jefferson.

Episode 70 The Sonic Origins of Electronic Dance Music Trying to understand the evolution and history of electronic dance music (EDM) is a daunting task. We'll explore some of the sonic roots to see how we got to EDM—a beat-driven music powered by electronics and often focused on creating a trancelike musical state. Playlist Jesse Saunders, “On And On” from On and On (1984 Jes Say Records). Possibly the first DJ-created album created as a commercial public release. Produced, Performed, Arranged By Jesse Saunders; written by Jesse Saunders, Vince Lawrence. 8:02 Armin Van Buuren, “Sail” from Sail (2006 Armind). This 12” original mix was written by and produced by Armin van Buuren. 7:29 Amelie Lens, “Linger On” from Let it Go (2016 Second State). EDM performer and producer from Antwerp, Belgium. 7:41 Timmy Thomas, “Why Can't We Live Together,” from Why Can't We Live Together (1972 Glades). Timmy Thomas, Hammond organ and drum machine. Note the rapid-fire drum sequences sprinkled in here and there, a premonition around the future sound of drum machines. 4:38 Kraftwerk, “Uranium” from Radioactivity (1975 Kling-Klang). Not so much a danceable turn, but the choir sample was later repurposed by New Order in Blue Monday, so a worthy acknowledgement to Kraftwerk. 1:26 Kraftwerk, “Transistor” from Radioactivity (1975 Kling-Klang). Electronic percussion, Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flür; Voice, Electronics, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hütter. 3:43 Kraftwerk, “Europe Endless” from Trans Europe Express (1977 Kling-Klang). Electronic Drums, Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flur; Electronics, Voice, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hutter. 9:38 Biddu Orchestra, “Bionic Boogie” from Bionic Boogie (1976 Epic). A 45 RPM single from the disco era, featuring some electronics in the form of synthesizers. Biddu was an Indian-British music producer, composer, songwriter and singer. This was a departure for the Biddu Orchestra, which was normally engaged in full disco orchestrations, not the sonic textures of synthesizers, which are heard here, if somewhat overlayed by the other instruments. 2:59 Donna Summer, “I Feel Love” from I Remember Yesterday (1977 Casablanca). Written and sung by Donna Summer; produced by and Moog Synthesizer, Giorgio Moroder; Moog Synthesizer, Robby Wedel; Moog Bass, Thor Baldursson; Drums, Percussion, Keith Forsey; Bass, Les Hurdle.5:52 Space, “Save Your Love For Me” from Just Blue (1978 Vogue). Space was a French group, created around Didier Marouani (aka Ecama) and Roland Romanelli, acclaimed for their 1977 UK disco hit "Magic Fly." 5:45 Space, “Final Signal” from Just Blue (1978 Vogue). Space was a French group, created around Didier Marouani (aka Ecama) and Roland Romanelli. 4:21 Yellow Magic Orchestra, “Computer Game (Theme From The Invader)” from Yellow Magic Orchestra (1978 Horizon). Japanese techno band, parallel to later Kraftwerk. Drums, Percussion, Other Electronics, Vocals – Yukihiro Takahashi; Keyboards, Other [Electronics], Percussion, orchestrated by Ryuichi Sakamoto; Produced by Harry Hosono; Micro Composer programmer, Hideki Matsutake. 4:28 Mandré, “M3000 (Opus VI)” from M3000 (1979 Motown). Produced and Arranged By Andre Lewis. Lewis was a keyboardist who went on to collaborate with many artists, not the least of which for Frank Zappa for whom he played keyboards for The Mothers of Invention after the departure of George Duke. 5:43 New Order, “Blue Monday” from Blue Monday/The Beach (1983, Factory). This was a 12-inch 45 RPM single of the song which became a top seller. New Order was firmly entrenched in the synth-pop dance/crossover genre at that time and this song with its funky samples, mechanical progression and even references to Kraftwerk (the vocal choir heard is indeed a sample from Kraftwerk's “Uranium” released in 1975 effectively put a few more bricks in the bridge to electronic dance music. 7:27 Michel Huygen, “Take Now Music (Extended Instrumental Version)” from Capturing Holograms (1984 jive Electro). Recorded early 1984 in Barcelona (Spain). Composed, performed, produced, and programmed by Belgian born synthesist Michel Huygen, a member of the Spanish group Neuronium in 1976. 5:34 Kraftwerk, “Der Telefon Anruf (German Version)” from The Telephone Call (1987 EMI). Listen to this track and you will hear similarities in later work by New Order, particularly the comping synth chords and pattern. 3:47 New Order, “World (The Price Of Love) (Radio Edit)” from World. (The Price Of Love) (1993 London Records). CD single of the track also found on the album Republic (1993 London Records). This sounds as if New Order is still thanking Kraftwerk for their inspiration. 3:39 Opening background music: New Order, “Confusion (Instrumental)” (1983 Streetwise). Mixed by Arthur Baker and John "Jellybean" Benitez. New Order's sixth single and their first collaboration with Arthur Baker. Released August 22, 1983.   Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Your Body, Can You Feel it?, Your Love, etc. Housepedia Podcasts #HomeIsWhereHouseIsPlaying 25 I DJ with Soul DJ with Soul has always been a music enthusiast who discovered a music genre in the mid-'90s which is still the biggest passion in his life – house music. This was mainly due to listening to radio shows like HR3 Clubnight as well as going to house clubs or collecting different kinds of DJ mixtapes, first and foremost influenced by US house DJs and their particular sound, such as Jesse Saunders, Frankie Knuckles and Masters at Work. In 2001, he decided to buy his first records in order to learn the art of mixing. House DJs from the USA would also influence him most during his growth as a DJ, both in terms of music and skill. For more than 15 years, he has been an enthusiastic vinyl collector and a DJ who has played at clubs, lounges and bars in different regions of Germany, such as Nachtcafé (Leipzig), Zooma (Plauen), Blumengold (Cologne) and Die Bank (Munich). When playing a set, his music comprises a wide variety of house music, especially funky, Latin, soulful and garage houseor even the original disco sound. Since 2010, DJ with Soul has also been focusing on music production, particularly on house music that comes from the heart and which has a warm sound as well as soulful elements. For the last couple of years he has released his music on numerous house labels such as Smile for a while, Berlin Bass Collective or Melodymathics – just to name a few. The roots of house music stem from Chicago, whilst some may argue and contest such a statement it's hard to deny the influence that the city has upon the genre, even some forty odd years later. New York also has a place in the heart of house, a city born upon breaks and disco culture before being re-imagined by the likes of Larry Levan who interacted and with music by the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Jesse Saunders, Ron Hardy and Larry Heard. Dj Spen grew up in Baltimore, watching on with keen interest he observed the lineage between the cities, the pioneers and the sounds. In the eighties he was a hip hop dj, appearing regularly on the radio. It was only later that he would evolve his sound and begin to piece together his own musical narrative which lead to him being more prolifically involved in house music. Over the years he has released music most prominently via Basement Boys Records and Black Vinyl Records. It is at this point in his career in which we focus, a time when house music was alive, evolutionary and perhaps its most dynamic. We invited Dj Spen to record a mix, an ode to the sound of Chicago upon which he was raised and hasn't left since.

Why is there so much information on this man?* Using a blueprint of old school funk, disco, R&B, early pop and hip-hop, JESSE SAUNDERS is the architect of the musical style known as "House Music." He wrote, produced and released the first documented House record titled "ON & ON" through his own label Jes Say Records. His next hitz "Funk U Up," "Real Love" and the platinum selling single "Love Can't Turn Around," served as the foundation for a funky and soulful new sound in electronic music. Jesse Saunders reigns as the ambassador for the global house craze through his work as a DJ, producer, filmmaker and author. After a lifetime of influential and innovative work, JESSE SAUNDERS continues to break new ground.* Jesse has been featured in hundreds of books including the bestseller "What Kind Of House Party Is This?" by Jonathan Fleming (MixMag) and his own semi-autobiography "House Music...The Real Story." He has co-starred in over 10 documentaries including the Sun Dance award winning "Modulations," the Channel 4 (London) mini-series "Pump Up The Volume," the BBC audio documentary "The 2nd Summer of Love" and currently the award winning "Put The Needle on the Record." He has had hundreds of features in every major industry magazine including Rolling Stone, MixMag, Urb and Keyboard. Jesse has lectured at top conferences, schools, colleges and universities throughout the world including The Red Bull Academy, Oxford University, Boston University, The Winter Music Conference (Miami), Popkom (Germany), The New Music Seminar (New York) and the Amsterdam Dance Event (Holland).* The mayor of Chicago declared July 17th, JESSE SAUNDERS and the Pioneers of House Music Day in 1997, and he has received similar recognition by the mayors of San Francisco, Seattle, and Albuquerque, NM. He is featured in Jonathan Fleming's book What Kind of House Party Is This? (Mind In U Publishing, U.K.), and has been interviewed as the house authority for many films and magazine articles, including the award winning “Modulations,” “Pump Up The Volume” (London), "The 2nd Summer of Love" and currently "Put The Needle On The Record." Countless successful singles, albums and production credits behind him, JESSE SAUNDERS maintains his status as the head of the House.* JESSE believes in "breaking new ground and my music must have a message and a meaning". He opened wide the doors to his House and invited the world in. With programs like Rave Secure and AV Talent Search he ensures that his heritage will live on. He continues to tear the roof off with slamming sets and forays into the world of film and publishing. Whatever JESSE SAUNDERS does, one thing is certain, HOUSE is where his heart is.More InformationLearn more about how you can improve your results with the history of house music with Check out In Their Own Words at link.fadeinnetwork.com/jesseThe History Of House Music Links & Mentions From This Episode:link.fadeinnetwork.com/jesseCheck out Jesse’s radio show for “In Their Own Words” every day at https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheRealJesseSaundersThanks for Tuning In!Thanks so much for being with us this episode. DJ Big D and Dayslayer talk to Vince Lawrence, Chicago House Music Pioneer, from South Central LA via phone. This conversation was set up by our segment producer, Keenan King aka DJ Naneek Divad. Vince shares his upbringing, history of song "On and On" with Jesse Saunders, record pools, what happened that night in Comisky Park, 40 years ago, at Disco Demolition Night, promoted by Steve Dahl. And questions why would the Chicago White Sox celebrate it 40 years later? Vince Lawrence discusses the societal atmosphere in Chicago and the rest of the US from the 1970's to today. He takes us on a journey of his entrepreneurial mind as a young teenager and he mentions how he launched multiple record labels and sold records from his trunk, pre Master P. This podcast is an amazing journey of a young talented Black kid from the Southside of Chicago. A must listen and share episode. We hope the world listens to episode 10 of Blend LA Podcast. After this episode with Chicago House Music legends, Jesse Saunders and Wayne Williams, people will understand how amazing House Music is and how it transcends everything, from skin color to homophobia. These conversations were recorded with no edits, as raw and real and spontaneous as the creativity in House Music itself. The hosts of The AMP Collective had the opportunity to sit down with two of the founders of The Chosen Few DJs, Jesse Saunders and Wayne Williams from Chicago, at the House of Vibes Sunday brunch, at the legendary Fais Dodo in Los Angeles, thanks to our Brother in House and segment producer, DJ Naneek Divad. The first on-location interviews ever! They both break down "House Music" to it's foundation and essence because they are both! DJ Big D and Dayslayer go back to their childhoods, from the days of one turntable and basement parties and find out what life was like in the 70's and 80's for two young Black kids from the Southside of Chicago and how they birthed a music genre known and danced to around the world called HOUSE MUSIC. Blenders will definitely truly understand where House came from after episode 10. EPIC EPISODE 10. Marques Wyatt, godfather of deep house and a pioneer of LA's club scene

This week’s guest is Marques Wyatt. In this episode you will find snippets of music from Aerosmith, Loosid, FKA Twigs, Depeche Mode, and Jesse Saunders. Not only is Marques the godfather of LA’s deep house scene, his lineage traces directly to the great Frankie Knuckles, who mentored Marques after meeting him in a club in New York in the 1980s. From those auspicious beginnings, Marques went on to pioneer some of Los Angeles's most important clubs, including Brass, Does Your Mama Know, and most recently, Deep, exposing fans to groundbreaking acts such as Brand New Heavies, Louie Vega, and Jamiroquai. He’s a DJ’s DJ, a house music purist who integrates his love for yoga and his spiritual quest into his effort to move people on the dance floor. In our interview, we discuss the highs and lows of club promotion, the way house music has changed over the years, and meeting Paris Hilton. That’s the second Paris Hilton story on Rebel Radio, by the way! This dude has seen some major changes over the years, and has made it a mission in life to keep the integrity of the music he loves. At the same time, he has words for the haters: “What does it matter to you at the end of the day? That’s their choice. People can spend their money however they want to spend it.” Find his Soundcloud channel here: https://soundcloud.com/marques-wyatt Check out what EDM.COM has to say here: http://edm.com/articles/2015-07-08/rebel-radio-ep4-marques-wyatt

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords @darand-land "1987 was the year I was introduced to the 'clubhouse' sound. I became addicted to this moody, pumping music that my uncle and his friends would bring back from their trips to Chicago and D.C. At this time, I was still in high school, so it was strictly bedroom listening, and weekly viewing of a dance show on public access television. This was long before the days of internet music downloads, and IRC. It was all about tracking down a rare mixtape, or getting one of the handful of vinyl releases. I clamored for anything closely resembling Fingers Inc., Marshall Jefferson, etc. I attended college outside of Detroit for a few years. There was nothing like the dose of detroit techno and acid house I was receiving. I always gravitated toward the darker, more laid-back tracks from the likes of UR and others. Some of my most memorable experiences are being at random warehouses down in the city until sunrise. I eventually made it back to Buffalo. In Buffalo, there was a small, but tight-knit group of folks that promoted the sound. It extended to the kids at the various universities, many from the five boroughs, that were looking to hear house. Strictly and Nervous set the sound at most of the functions. If I wasn't at a private party, I would end up at places like 'The Icon', and 'The Difference' (which happened to be named after a Strictly Rhythm track!). While I was completing my degree, I told myself that there would be writing and production of house in my future. It took until 1998, after a career pit stop in Boston, and a move to California, to actually start writing songs. I was fortunate to draw on some key influences to develop my sound. Musically, my main influences were Wayne Gardiner, Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, and Jesse Saunders. Other powerful influences were my exposure to city life in Buffalo. The classic architecture, the strong arts scene, and the struggles of the inner-city live through my music. In 1999, I met Chris Gray (from Deep4Life) online. Here was a person who had a different path to the house sound, but I related to him like no other. The rest is history..."
