RIP APRIL WINE's MYLES GOODWYN, THEN WE CHAT ABOUT RIDING IN SILENCE.
In this special episode, we pay tribute to the late Myles Goodwyn, the lead singer and songwriter of April Wine. Myles was seemingly in good health and spirits in late September as he and April Wine were inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Goodwyn was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame. We feature two segments from the Famous Lost Words archives. First up is Tom's 2021 interview with Myles who told wonderful stories about the history of April Wine and their early struggles, first brush with fame, their feud with a famous rock critic, their gig with The Rolling Stones at the El Mocambo in Toronto - and their crossover success in the early '80s. He also talked about his latest music - and in particular one song that addresses the residential school crisis. We also feature a phone chat with Myles circa 1977 in which he talks about Canada's star system. Both segments capture Goodwyn's personality and deep love of music. Myles Goodwyn passed away on December 3, 2023 at the age of 75 in Halifax Nova Scotia.

Eric Alper, Music Historian and Publicist
Les avatars ont alors interprété "God Gave Rock and Roll to You". Way back in 1969 Jim Henman asked his cousins David & Ritchie Henman if they wanted to form a new band. David suggested he would be interested if Jim could get his friend Myles Goodwyn to join. This would be the early beginnings of what became the iconic Canadian band, April Wine. Jim quit April Wine shortly after their first album was released & went back to school to become a medical technician specializing in toxicology. He dove back into the music in the 1990s & six years ago rejoined forces with his old bandmate Myles Goodwyn. Myles recently retired from touring the globe with April Wine & now Jim, Myles & a new band are busy recording new material & touring the Maritimes. We discussed all this and more in this episode. Ritchie Henman is an original founding member of iconic Canadian classic rock band April Wine. He & his brother David were inspired at an early age to pick up musical instruments & inspired by their parents, treated their early bands like a business. This would pay off big time when Ritchie, his brother David, cousin Jim Henman & Myles Goodwyn unleashed April Wine to the world. After three successful albums & a very busy touring schedule behind them Ritchie, David & Jim would leave April Wine. But that wouldn't be the end of either their individual musical careers or that of April Wine.Ritchie has just released his autobiography in book form titled "High Adventure Tales of Canadian Rock & Roll Survival" & we discuss this and a lot more in this episode. Lucky fans in Truro are about to be treated to back-to-back shows from Country Music performer Brett Kissel. The Alberta-born singer-songwriter is performing the concerts at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in tribute to the essential and frontline workers. And the tickets for both shows were handed out for free earlier this year. Kissel describes his start in the music business getting to hear himself on the radio at the age of eleven singing a Hank Snow song. A few decades and his ten album is being released this year, a four part box set called The Compass Series. From his Ukrainian roots to missing out on the last April Wine show with Myles Goodwyn, Kissel says he doesn't know if any westerner loves the East more than he does. And the feeling appears to be reciprocal.
Infinity is the album where Journey takes on the sound we recognize as that monster of a group. This fourth studio album is the first to include vocalist and front man Steve Perry in the group. The group had been looking for a stronger lead vocalist, and had originally settled on Robert Fleischman for that role. However, Fleischman was soon replaced by Perry after “musical and management differences” were encountered. In addition to Steve Perry, the band at the time included Neal Schon on guitar, Gregg Rolle on keyboards and vocals, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on percussion. The album was produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who had previously worked with Queen. Baker brought the layered sound and stacked vocals approach to the band, which is prominent in songs like “Feeling That Way” and “Anytime.” Infinity would mark a departure of Journey from their jazzy prog rock roots to a decidedly more accessible pop rock sound. Much of their work prior to Infinity would disappear from the setlist over time. This album would see both former lead singer Gregg Rolle and new lead singer Steve Perry sharing vocal duties on songs, but those lead duties would be almost exclusively Perry's going forward.Rob brings us this iconic band and album as we celebrate our 250th Episode. LightsThe lead track from the album is an homage to San Francisco. It was inspired by a sunrise when Perry was at Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles, and saw the lights going down as the sun came up. It was the third single off the album, but was only a minor hit at number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100.Feeling That WayThis track utilizes a prominent layered sound by having multiple vocalists sing each part of the harmony in unison, creating a much fuller sound. It also sees Perry and Rolle taking turns with the lead vocal duties. Ordinarily paired with “Anytime,” the following song on the album, we're cutting this one short in favor of some deeper cuts.Somethin' to HideAn unusual deeper cut in an album filled with well-played songs, this track shows off Perry's high harmonies. It was rarely played live because of the vocal difficulty. The lyrics talk about a relationship where it is clear something is wrong, something hidden. PatientlyAnother (relatively) deep cut, Perry and Schon wrote this song. It is Perry's reflection about life on the road, his excitement at being a part of the band, and the thrill of the fans. This is the first song Steve Perry wrote for the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Intro to the television series “Project UFO” This short-lived television series channeled the flying saucer/alien interest that was popular at the time. STAFF PICKS:Comin' Right Down On Top of Me by April Wine Bruce gets the staff picks going with a deep track from April Wine's seventh studio album, First Glance. The song is a blues epic which chronicles the singer's feeling of being so weighed down with bad luck that he can't breathe. Myles Goodwyn who wrote this song was the only founding member left in the group by the time this album was created.Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel Lynch features a song dedicated to Joel's first wife and road manager, Elizabeth Weber. It is the first single from his hugely successful fifth studio album, The Stranger, and it would win Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1979. Joel jokes about writing songs for his wives just before they get divorced. Jazz saxophonist Phil Wood plays the sax solo part.Northern Lights by Renaissance Journey may have given up their prog rock roots, but Wayne brings us the prog rock with the most popular song Renaissance would produce. This song off their eighth studio album, A Song for All Seasons, is about leaving the Northern Lights of England and fiancée Roy Wood while working in the U.S. It went to number 10 in the UK, although it didn't break into the US top 40.Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa EsmeraldaRob finishes the staff picks with a flamenco dance cover of Nina Simone's song. The best known cover was done by the Animals, but Santa Esmeralda featured a 16-minute cover that took up an entire album side. You may recall Santa Esmeralda's version was featured in one of the Kill Bill: Volume 1 fight scenes. COMEDY TRACK:Short People by Randy Newman Long before his association with Disney, Randy Newman released this novelty hit which exclaims, “Don't want no short people 'round here.”

It's been quite the journey for Myles Goodwyn and the band he co-founded in 1969. And after more than 50 years, fifteen studio albums and thousands of concerts later, there's one more show with him as a frontman. And it will happen on March 2nd, 2023 in Nova Scotia, where it all began. He'll continue writing and producing April Wine records, but says touring as a 74 year old with diabetes, is too much. Here's a look back over the years and a look ahead to the next chapter for singer, songwriter, author, partner, father and performer Myles Goodwyn.

You Could Have Been a Lady". En 1979, elBBC lanzó In Concert para distribución internacional; En 1981, Aquarius lanzó otro álbum recopilatorio, The Best of April Wine Rock Ballads . El álbum incluía los sencillos "Enough is Enough", "If You See Kay" y "Anything You Want, You Got It". Mientras tanto, varios sellos lanzaron varios álbumes recopilatorios. En 2004, Silverline lanzó el primer DVD-A de April Wine llamado From the Front Row ... Live! .
In 1977, April Wine played an intimate concert in Toronto, sharing the bill with a band called The Cockroaches – or, so the audience thought. Halfway through the concert, The Rolling Stones took the stage, and the rest is history. April Wine lead singer Myles Goodwyn shares the story.
David Henman, along with his younger brother Ritchie & their cousin Jim Henman founded the iconic Canadian classic rock band April Wine after recruiting their neighbour, Myles Goodwyn (who is still leading April Wine today). That said, AW is just a small chapter in David's career. He's done a lot musically both before & after April Wine. In this episode, we discuss guitars & his progression as a guitarist in his early years.

Bob Segarini is a long time veteran of the entertainment business. Inspired to become a singer/songwriter as a young boy growing up in a sleepy little farm town called Stockton in California, his dreams would start to materialize early. He wrote his first song in class while school was in session at his middle school & it wasn't long before luck introduced him to artists like Fabian & Tuesday Weld. As a young man, he moved to Canada where his musical & acting careers took off. In this part one of our interview, we talked about his early years up to his forming a band called "All the young dudes" that was signed by a major label almost immediately & that featured Ritchie & David Henman (founders of April Wine) & Brian Greenway (who later joined April Wine & is still Myles Goodwyn's right hand man). Bob Segarini has been there & done that & in this show, we begin to see how & why he's had a successful career.
Ritchie Henman is an original founding member of the iconic Canadian band April Wine. He was the original drummer for the band that he & his brother David Henman along with cousin Jim Henman formed after recruiting Myles Goodwyn into the fold. In this part one of our interview, Ritchie recalls how April Wine was formed & how the three Henman boys ended up leaving the band. In part two we discuss Ritchie's career post April Wine.
The Doobie Brothers went through massive changes during their first commercial peak in the mid ‘70s. This week, we'll feature both eras of the Doobies – the Tom Johnston era and the Michael McDonald years. They talk about the origin of the band's name, the stories behind their biggest hits and the health issues that led to McDonald joining the group. All told, these interview clips from the various members tell a fascinating tale of a band that rose again after a near tragic situation. We also have a brand new interview with Myles Goodwyn of April Wine! Myles talks about the heyday of April Wine, including the infamous Stones concert at Toronto's El Mocambo club. Plus, we chat about Myles' new song “Some Of These Children (They Never Grew Up)” – a powerful lament about the children of Canada's residential schools. And finally, Myles and Tom take a moment to hilariously recount April Wine's battle with the Toronto media – and one critic in particular. In a short segment, we find out the haunting story behind Elvis Presley's first major hit “Heartbreak Hotel” – vividly told by the woman who co-wrote the song. We finish the episode with a wonderful 1986 interview with Anita Baker, whose voice is matched only by her ebullient personality. Anita tells Marilyn Denis about her early career setbacks (one record company guy said she couldn't sing!) and how she rejects the glitter and glam of show business. Anita and Marilyn have great chemistry in this genuinely entertaining chat!

Truck 'N Roll sales manager Steve Traynor sat in on this week's episode with iconic Canadian rock artist Myles Goodwyn, and reminisced about mutual backstage acquaintances, including a sound man who was notorious for being TOO loud sometimes. It's been 50-plus years since his first girlfriend Bertha lugged his equipment (“She could carry a Marshall under one arm”), and in the intervening decades, Myles has witnessed and experienced the evolution of backstage life, from the heyday of April Wine in the 1970s and 80s to his current trio playing gigs around the Maritimes, where Myles was born and has chosen to call home once again. A talented singer/songwriter, a great storyteller and a funny man who might have made up the story about Bertha, Myles Goodwyn is our guest on episode 2 of Backstage Stories: Crew Are People, Too. Myles Goodwyn joins Carla on her birthday for a down home chat about all things music, April Wine, the Blues, and whatever else feels right! If your an April Wine fan and a Myles Goodwyn fan, you don't want to miss this down to earth chat. "Singer, guitarist, writer, producer and leader of the band April Wine, Myles Goodwyn’s passion and drive shaped and directed the group from its earliest beginnings. He is the only remaining original member of the group since the inception of April Wine in 1969. Goodwyn grew up poor and is the classic “small-town kid makes good” success story. As a young teen, Goodwyn honed his skills, playing in bands such as East Gate Sanctuary and Woody’s Termites. From the very beginning, Goodwyn plotted the course of the band. His unique but classic rock voice gives April Wine a distinct and immediately recognizable sound. Ranging from hard rock classics to soulful ballads, his vocal range and style can really grab a hold of you. His songwriting skills are prolific. He has penned virtually every April Wine song. He has a knack with words and seems to have an ability to write a catchy tune at will. Through the ups and downs and changing faces of the band, the one thing that has remained constant is Myles Goodwyn. Even today and with their latest release and shift in direction, his voice is as strong and apparent as ever. Now in its fourth decade, April Wine continues to charge ahead as one of Canada’s very best rock bands. And as far as rock history goes, Myles Goodwyn is already a living legend (especially in the annals of Canadian rock history), being known as one of the all-time greats. In Just Between You and Me, Goodwyn shares the story of his upbringing, first at home in rural New Brunswick and then in the music business as the lead singer of one of Canada’s most popular bands ever, April Wine." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlas-coffee-house/support
A conversation with guitarist, singer, songwriter, Myles Goodwyn (April Wine, Myles Goodwyn & Friends of the Blues) - http://mylesgoodwyn.com/
Say Hello to Myles Goodwyn. The founder member, lead singer and principle songwriter joins Barry and Matt on Sessions to chat about his new album and the journey that was April Wine. He tells a tale of a lost guitar that managed to find its way back to its owner. Its an almost creepy level story that would be, very easily, something out of a movie. Myles chats about his new blues album and the sequel that is on the way and how recording in 2019 is different than recording in the 1970’s. Myles is quick to extol the virtues of modern technology and how the sonic landscape has changed as a result. Where does his find inspiration today? What’s the status of April Wine? These questions are answered as well as a whole lot more. Crazy Stories details a kinder version of our affable host. A Pause for Thought talks alpha and omega. Crazy Stories is adult with a side of roses. Its a valentine special to be sure - all the way from Finland The results of the Sessions Poll unpack the Grammys.
We spoke with April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn about the remarkable story of being reunited with his beloved 1962 Gibson Melody Maker - a guitar believed to have been destroyed in a crash more than 40 years ago

Show #738 Late... But Never Too Late! The show is late because Spinner has been too busy playing music with a couple of friends at a 5 day outdoor rolling kitchens or foodtrucks event in Amsterdam. That gave him very little time to listen to music to pick songs to play and search for some information about it.So show #738 is just a thrown together collection of blues & such. But still good enough to be a real Bandana Blues show. Turn it up and judge for yourself. 01. Grand Marquis - Brighter Days (4:07) (Brighter Days, Grand Marquis Music, 2018) 02.
