For some artists, they get popular quickly. Maybe it's their location, the "it" factor, inside connections. For some other artists, it takes them years of hard work and dedication. Through the discipline, they are able to carve out a niche for themselves and might get popular through that. Some artists never make it. Some get close then something thwarts it. Jimmy Scott aka Little Jimmy Scott was a jazz vocalist like no other. From his phrasing to his ability to put so much emotion into his voice, Jimmy was recognized by anyone whose seen him that he was special. Held back from a bad deal at Savoy Records, Jimmy Scott's attempts to record and play live hit obstacle after obstacle for decades. After a performance at a funeral for his friend Doc Pomus, Jimmy Scott was able to get a new deal and gained popularity in his late 70's. It's rare for the world to experience artistry that is so genuine, so heartfelt...so captivating. Welcome to the world of singer/songwriter, Cleveland P. Jones. He is the true embodiment of soul and jazz. When asked about his future in the music industry, he stated “my mission is longevity, not instant fame. I've learned by example and experience not to rush a good thing." This native of a little town named "North" in South Carolina, started his artistic voyage at an early age under the tutelage of his mother and grandfather who were the lead singers in church. "My mother truly molded me as a singer by watching her sing in the choir and the songs she's played while we cleaned up at home." A graduate of two prestigious institutions, Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Cleveland studied music and theater. From touring with the Morehouse College Glee to playing roles on the stages of Berklee and Spelman College, Cleveland brings a plethora of artistic expressions to the table. While studying at Morehouse, he instantly fell in love with soul and jazz music. "I remember the first time I heard the voice of Little Jimmy Scott...I was sold", he reflects. "It was a voice like mine, and I no longer felt so awkward because of my vocal timbre and vocal expression." During his matriculation at Morehouse, Cleveland discovered many jazz and soul greats like Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, and Aretha Franklin who deeply influenced his sound and approach to the art of vocal phrasing.  In 2013, Cleveland released his debut album, "Ace of Hearts" and won the SoulTracks.com's New Artist of The Year award. He also had the honor of opening for soul legend Chaka Khan and was the special guest of The Shadowboxers. His original song, "Don't Leave Me" from his debut album was a major feature in the 2016 Netflix release, "ECHO PARK". In 2017-2018, Cleveland was privileged to tour many cities through out Eastern Europe as a solo artist. Currently, Cleveland is expanding his brand by writing and recording soul, jazz and house music and continues performing nationally and locally. Simply put, Cleveland is committed to deliver unadulterated, timeless music. He is well on his way to higher places, but will always be grounded in his quest to heal souls one song at a time. https://artistecard.com/ClevelandPJones (https://artistecard.com/ClevelandPJones) www.joekelleyradio.com

"Alto saxophonist Justin Robinson was born August 14, 1968, in Manhattan. He first picked up a horn at the age of 13, and honed his sound while attending the High School of Music and Arts (LaGuardia High School) in New York.Robinson developed a passion for the alto sax and, from the influences of Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, crafted his own distinctive sound. Robinson has collaborated with eminent artists such as the Harper Brothers, Cecil Brooks III, Abbey Lincoln, Diana Ross, Little Jimmy Scott, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, The Dizzy Gillespie All Star Band, and most recently, The Roy Hargrove Big Band in addition to the Roy Hargrove Quintet.Justin Robinson wields a hefty portfolio: joined Harper Brothers at 18, debuted on Verve at 22, a decade's-worth of star sideman gigs. All of that hang-time paid off with his 1998 recording The Challenge on Arabesque Records. Penning six of the compositions, selecting an inspired posse of young ringers (Ron Blake, tenor sax; Stephen Scott, piano; Dwayne Burno, bass; Dion Parsons, drums), Robinson also produced the whole shebang.Robinson also released as a solo artist Justin Time in 1991 with Verve Music Group label. It was produced by Bobby Watson, who also appears on the recording, in additon to Gary Bartz, on alto saxophones, and includes more young ringers of that time: Eddie Henderson - trumpet; Kenny Barron, Stephen Scott - pianos; Peter Washington - bass; Lewis Nash - drums." Mina testiklar vandrade aldrig ner. Min penis förblev liten. Min röst kom aldrig i målbrottet. Jag fick varken skägg eller pubeshår. Det berättar Jimmy Scott i biografin Faith in Time The Life of Jimmy Scott av David Ritz. Hela upplagan av skivan Falling in Love is Wonderful dras tillbaka efter bara några dagar. Han gör covers på Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince), Jealous Guy (John Lennon), Almost Blue (Elvis Costello), och Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (Elton John & Bernie Taupin). Andra artister verksamma här är t ex Count Basie, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis, JR, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, The Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Lohn Lee Hooker, Lena Horne, Etta James, B. B. King, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, Little Richard, The Four Tops, The Miracles, Ike & Tina Turner, The Supremes, The Temptations och Muddy Waters. Fr a när hon gör sina lesbiska standup-akter. 1931 samarbetar Moms Mabley med den erkända afroamerikanska författaren, dramatikern och antropologen Zora Neale Hurston i pjäsen Fast and Furious: A Colored Revue in 37 Scenes. Moms spelar huvudrollen. På TV-bolaget CBS är hon "The Funniest Woman in the World Den roligaste kvinnan i världen och tar upp vassare ämnen än sina komikerkollegor; nämligen rasism, kvinnors rättigheter och homosexualitet. Även Bobby Kennedy nämner hon i texten. Min röst kom aldrig i målbrottet. Jag fick varken skägg eller pubeshår.” Det berättar Jimmy Scott i biografin Faith in Time – The Life of Jimmy Scott av David Ritz. Hela upplagan av skivan Falling in Love is Wonderful dras tillbaka efter bara några dagar. Han gör covers på Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince), Jealous Guy (John Lennon), Almost Blue (Elvis Costello), och Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (Elton John & Bernie Taupin). Andra artister verksamma här är t ex Count Basie, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis, JR, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, The Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Lohn Lee Hooker, Lena Horne, Etta James, B. B. King, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, Little Richard, The Four Tops, The Miracles, Ike & Tina Turner, The Supremes, The Temptations och Muddy Waters. Fr a när hon gör sina lesbiska standup-akter. 1931 samarbetar Moms Mabley med den erkända afroamerikanska författaren, dramatikern och antropologen Zora Neale Hurston i pjäsen Fast and Furious: A Colored Revue in 37 Scenes. Moms spelar huvudrollen. På TV-bolaget CBS är hon "The Funniest Woman in the World – Den roligaste kvinnan i världen” och tar upp vassare ämnen än sina komikerkollegor; nämligen rasism, kvinnors rättigheter och homosexualitet. Även Bobby Kennedy nämner hon i texten.

Jonathan Karrant was born in the heart of America at the foothills of the Ozarks in the old western town of Fort Smith, Arkansas east of the Arkansas River.  His recent album “On and On” made it to number four in the All About Jazz charts. The album features such songs as “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” and “Doodlin’”, as well as the title track, and was produced by Tyler Monks, with pianist Josh Nelson, bassist Rob Thorsen, guitarist Mark Shapiro, and drummer Duncan Moore. Audiences have characterized Jonathan as a great interpreter of song, a storyteller, a singer who brings music and lyric alive. Some refer to Jonathan as an amazing song-stylist who sings from the American songbook, an entertainer of star quality. Others say he paints a picture, he presents a mood and captivates a room through song. Jazz Corner said “Karrant’s voice is romantic without being cloying, warm but not forced” and “that he sings standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as if he had written the songs himself”. He will tell you that he has an innate connection with music writers of the past, masters like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Sammie Cahn, Julie Styne, Johnny Mercer, to mention a few. He will tell you that he has great respect for such giants as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Little Jimmy Scott, Nancy Wilson and Johnny Hartman. LITTLE JIMMY SCOTT

LINER NOTES

EVENING IN PARADISEThe life of Jimmy Scott is not one of meteoric stardom but a journey that has taken nearly seventy years to find its much deserved success.James Victor Scott, one of ten children, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 17, 1925. He's known for his high haunting soprano voice & poignant balladeering. His up & down recording career, started in the early 1950's, saw a resurgence in the 1990's when he was signed to Sire Records and received a Grammy nomination after a long period of commercial inactivity. Soon after coming out of retirement, he was seen on stages around the world, performing magical & heart breaking interpretations of old torch songs, Broadway standards and even a smattering of choice modern rock tunes done with generally sparse jazz arrangements.Almost strangled by the umbilical cord at birth, then orphaned as a boy in depression era Cleveland, the odds against Jimmy Scott ever suceeding were further stacked by an abnormal genetic pituitary hormonal defect known as "Kallman's Syndrome" which accounts for his somewhat effeminate looks & unnaturally high singing voice.Finding solace onstage, he sang in combos of the post war R&B era, notably as a featured singer with band leader Lionel Hampton, with whom he made his recorded debut in 1950(although his name did not appear on the label). He was finally signed to a steady record deal when he was almost 30, when Herman Lubinsky of Newark's Savoy Records offered Cleveland's finest balladeer a shot circa 1954. Lubinsky, whose label was a great repository of jazz & blues recordings, was also a notorious shyster. In David Ritz's 2002 bio of Jimmy Scott "Faith In Time", Seymour Stein of Sire Records recalls past colleagues at the time calling Savoy Record's Newark HQ the "Slave Barracks". Savoy recorded some well received Little Jimmy Scott sides, but due to Lubinsky's malfeasance, Scott went mostly uncompensated. As time wore on, he grew discontent, started retreating into booze and left the label's fold by the beginning of the 1960's.Over the years the Lubinsky/Savoy contract would stifle Scott in numerous ways, particularly when he tried to break free and record for Ray Charles' Tangerine label in the early 1960's and another time with Atlantic in the late 1960's. Lubinsky would battle to have the records withdrawn, keeping Scott's music from ever hitting the streets en masse.1969's attempt at a comeback LP "The Source" was produced by Joel Dorn for Atlantic, featuring backing from a hot group of players including David Fathead Newman on tenor sax, Eric Gale on guitar and Ron Carter on bass...The record was withdrawn due to lawsuit after the first pressing, for a longtme making it a rare and often bootleged masterpiece.Jimmy's numerous shots at stardom were so hampered by the fiscal mismanagement & bad business dealings, it lead him to frustration, failed relationships, drinking and drugging, and a career ending downward spiral that took him away from the limelight. His talent was never in doubt, but his successes were measured at best.A favorite of performers ranging from Billie Holiday & Dinah Washington, to Frankie Valli, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, all whom knew of and expressed respect of his work. Said Quincy Jones once,'Jimmy would tear my heart out every night with his soul-penetrating style"...Even Madonna has said "Jimmy Scott is the only singer who makes me cry,"Strangely enough, it appears death that actually the catalyst that brought Scott's career back to life...By the late 70's and early 80's some of his only gigs were occasional charity appearances at senior citizen homes. Scott's day jobs at Bob's Big Boy and in a Cleveland Sheraton hotel gave him a mindset that was set far from keeping abreast of the changing tastes of a fickle record buying public at the tail end of the 20th century. In 1985, at age 60, he returned to the eastern seaboard, and for the first time in over a decade started working small clubs in New York and Harlem, perhaps getting occasional nostalgic write ups in the NY Times or Village Voice. Scott's subsequent shift back into the public eye ironically began to truly gather momentum at The Riverside Funeral Home on St.Patrick's Day 1991. The sad/happy occasion was legendary rock n roll songwriter and old friend Doc Pomus' funeral.Jimmy had met Pomus back in the 40's, and they had stayed in touch. In fact, in 1987 Doc even wrote a letter to trade publication Billboard extolling Scott's virtues, decrying the hard times he was going through, and warning the record industry not to sleep on a chance to catch the long overdue second coming of Little Jimmy Scott. Now a few years later, Scott sat Shiva and was asked by Doc's family to perform "Someone To Watch Over Me" at the funeral, along with backing from fellow old timers Dr. John on piano and Fathead Newman on sax. Scott arrived early and sat unasumedly with hands folded in the back with his 4th wife Earlene. After the colorful eulogies, Jimmy's haunting voice over the tinkling keys stunned the room, with many so far back they could barely see his tiny head over the crowd. The room was filled with dozens of music biz luminaries, like Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, and the aforementioned Seymour Stein of Sire who felt it was almost his spiritual duty to Doc to simply offer Scott a dignified deal.Jimmy later told a reporter in 2000 of the bittersweet good fortune coming from his friend's death, " The next day, this cat from Warners comes over with a contract. It was like Doc's hand reaching out from the grave."He went on to many new career highights ranging from appearing in David Lynch's Twin Peaks & having sold out shows across the US & Europe to performing onstage at Bill Clinton's inaugural ball gala in DC.Still Scott copes with the fact that his type of fame is fleeting, and has duly noted this phenomena when he sang onstage in the 1990's with the Grateful Dead to a crowd of thousands in his hometown of Cleveland, where the local daily paper referred to him as an "unknown female singer".Since the quirky career kickstart given to Scott from Pomus' funeral, he has continued touring, recorded some 8 or so albums on half dozn labels, and added a 5th wife to his bio as well. Now with his aged infirmities creeping in, Scott is restricted to moving around onstage via wheelchair...Music continues to be his life into his eighties, once telling ajournalist “I love performing. You live with reality every day. You can’t miss it. We can try to avoid a lot of trials in life, but it’s better to overcome than avoid. That’s what music has been for me. It’s been my opportunity to overcome.”"All I can do is give what I really feel." "It'll work out in the end. You gotta believe" Jimmy ScottTo Visit JIMMY SCOTT'S website CLICK HERE
