Flame Retardant Could Be Made From Discarded Cocoa HusksOn cocoa farms around the world, cocoa beans are pulled from their pods, and the hard husks are discarded, leaving 20 million tons of plant waste to biodegrade and potentially harm future crops. These husks are a source of lignin, a substance that gives plants their rigidity. It's extremely abundant—but often wasted.A new study published in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering found that the lignin processed from leftover cocoa pod husks could have a new use as an ingredient in flame retardant.“Lignin is pretty special, as it is very soluble in organic solvents,” said study co-author Dr. Nicholas Westwood, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology at St. Andrews University in Scotland, in an email. This means lignin can be chemically manipulated to create a number of useful substances relatively easily.Because of lignin's malleability, Westwood and his coauthors were able to add a flame-retardant molecule to the processed substance, and found that the modification increased its already naturally high ability to smother flames.That's just one possible application. While lignin hasn't found widespread industrial use yet, scientists hold hope for it to become a greener alternative for fuel and a biodegradable plastic instead of just being leftovers. Processing biomass for food or fuel also produces a massive amount of lignin as a byproduct, which has been converted to materials like activated charcoal or carbon foam. “There are endless possibilities,” Westwood said.​​Joining Ira to talk about lignin and its potential uses is Dr. Rigoberto Advincula, a materials scientist with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.The Oozy Physics Of OobleckYou may be familiar with a common science demonstration done in classrooms: If you mix cornstarch and water together in the right proportions, you create a gooey material that seems to defy the rules of physics. It flows like a liquid, but when you try to handle it quickly, it stiffens up.This kind of material is called an oobleck, and it's a type of non-Newtonian fluid, meaning its viscosity changes under pressure or stress. Oobleck-like materials include human-made things like Silly Putty and paint, but are also found in nature; blood and quicksand are both non-Newtonian fluids.For a long time, it's been hard to prove exactly why these materials act the way they do. But recently, scientists developed a better understanding of the underlying physics. A new study conducted in collaboration between the James Franck Institute and Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago was able to demonstrate this mechanism.“The findings from this study are important because they provide direct experimental evidence for one of the mechanisms proposed for strong shear thickening,” says Dr. Heinrich Jaeger, professor of physics at the University of Chicago. “Namely, frictional interactions as the particles in the liquid are sheared into contact.” Jaeger is a co-author of the study, which was led by postdoctoral researcher Dr. Hojin Kim.Jaeger and Kim speculate that a better understanding of non-Newtonian fluids could help in the development of new, advanced materials. I am not finished but I knew that I had so much to say about this book that instead of a reading update, we are focusing on this topic: how we respond, if we should respond at all, and why we might get some of our emotions mixed up We also update you on what's happening with our kids: we had our smoothest science fair,besides the outfit andI am starting some preschool prep and crafts. Soap is an excellent cleaner, and we’re about to discover the scientific secrets of soap! What you need: Milk (full fat milk works great) Plate Cotton bud or cocktail stick (even the end of a spoon will work) Washing up liquid Liquid Food Colouring What to do: Pour some milk onto the plate. Add one drop of each food colouring into the centre of the plate of milk. I like to use different colours to make the effect look even nicer! Place a drop of washing up liquid onto one end of a cotton swab. Touch the tip of the cotton bud to the centre of the milk, just the tip. It’s important not to dip it fully in or mix it. Hold it there for 10-15 seconds and watch the burst of colour!!! It's like a milk rainbow explosion! Experiment placing the bud at different places in the milk and see what happens. What’s going on? On the surface of liquids, like water, the molecules like to stick together. They line up in a way that gives the top of the water surface tension. That’s why sometimes you can see leaves floating on top of puddles. Milk is made mostly of water, but it also has some fat in it. Soap molecules loves to attach to fat molecules. When you place the soap into the milk, it changes the surface tension, and starts joining up with all the fat molecules, pushing all the food colouring out of the way in your unique milk masterpiece.   The Blob Monster – Oobleck What do you get if you mix water and cornflour?.....THE BLOB MONSTER! …and a blob monster that doesn’t act like all the other blob monsters! What you need: Cornflour Warm water Mixing Bowl Food Colouring (if you want to colour your monster) Gloves if you wish What to do: Put the cornflour into the bowl Pour in the water (about 2 parts cornflour to 1 part water) Add some food colouring Use your hands to mix it all together When its all mixed, now it’s time to play! Run your hand through it slowly, it acts like a runny liquid, correct? But now, try hitting it as if you wanted to splash it everywhere, it acts like a solid! You can even try rolling a ball of it in your hand, when you stop rolling, it turns back into a liquid! What’s going on? What is going on indeed with our Blob Monster!?! This gloopy mixture is not like the usual liquids you see every day. It’s a non-Newtonian fluid, called Oobleck. Most things around us are either a solid, liquid or a gas, but Oobleck can change from a liquid to a solid by applying a little bit of pressure to it. When you hit it, the cornflour bits clump together to make it feel like a solid. VERY IMPORTANT TO PUT THE OOBLECK INTO THE BIN WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED WITH IT. NOT DOWN THE SINK, AS YOU’LL HAVE A PLUMBER CALLING! Its okay to wash the bowl clean in the sink after getting rid of most of the Oobleck!   Spotting the International Space Station (ISS) With everybody at home, we have an excellent chance to look upwards, learn about the night sky and gain some perspective on the great cosmic symphony. Try and spot the International Space station, the biggest object ever flown in space, travelling across the sky, as a bright white dot. The Moon is more than 900 times further than the height of the ISS. The ISS flies across the sky in about 4 minutes and you won’t need a telescope. The ISS usually rises in the WEST or South West - but it may be well above the horizon when you spot it. Using Language As an Abstract Tool for Communication Through Art, With JonMarc Edwards and Ando Love. JonMarc studied art at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where he was drawn to the study of symbols and what they mean. Today he is the owner of MARKET Studio, an exhibition and performance space that focuses on immersive installations, performances, and literary events. Our second guest, Ando Pndlian, is the founder of the Search + ResQ Gallery, which is a multi-disciplinary design studio based in Los Angeles. They implement process driven design with a clear understanding of goals to support creative solutions for meaningful design.
