In this episode, Manny Vargas is going to talk about how to communicate with more confidence, clarity, and credibility with 3 takeaways he learned by virtue of the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. Communication can happen in a very direct and indirect way and with moment to seize the opportunity, so let’s seize that moment with these 3 takeways.. Manny shares some very clear examples from the movie scenes and how they apply to us as students of communication. With that, here’s what you’ll learn in today’s episode: First, he starts with the scene inside of the Dean Witter boardroom where Chris Gardner gets his chance to interview for the upcoming internship. Through a combination of steps, Chris was able to walk out with an opportunity he could only imagine because of this communication approach he launched. He talks about how to communicate with honesty.. Second, is being ready to seize the opportunity, but without a few critical nonverbal approaches used in practice, Chris doesn’t set himself up to be in the best possible position to earn a seat at the table, with this topic Manny dives into the power of demonstration with communication.. Lastly, Manny opens up again about the importance of the conversation between the ears and how this was applied to Chris’ situation in the movie to lead him forward in an ever adversity driven happiness pursuit..from meeting with CEO’s to prospects, to securing top accounts, learn how Manny brings out the best in this third takeaway from the movie.. In this episode Manny Vargas is going to talk about 3 Reasons why your Communication Skills are suffering and what you can do to improve them. Be it in relationships, partnerships, with business people, in professional environments, with peers, or in our casual conversations on the street; we all want those smooth conversations. We want to get better with our communication skills. So, here’s what you’ll learn in this episode: First Manny starts with, ‘You’re Not Falling in Love with the Idea that Communication is Important.’ You need to really love it in order to excel with your communication skills and be willing to do the work. You need the dedication and the commitment to master the craft and to get really good at it. Secondly, Manny says, ‘You Don't Look at Communication Skills as if It's a Game.’ Many times, we are concentrating on just the opposites, 'Oh! I am not good enough', 'I am insufficient in this particular type of skill.’ All the negative self-talk. So, you’ve lost that joy and that excitement. So, if you can find that excitement, that playfulness; your progress with your communication skills become a game. Third reason Manny says is, 'You Don't Appreciate Your Instrument'. He talks about the voice - the human instrument that helps you create the sounds and manufacture those words. We get to play with our instrument every day. It is fascinating that just from the way you speak, talk, and from the way you communicate; you can take somebody on a journey. If you don't appreciate the fact that voice is a part of your repertoire and part of how you become a better communicator and a great conversationalist, you're going to reverse the effects. About Tyler Nelson Learn More from Tyler: If you want to work with Dr. Tyler Nelson on an individual basis for injuries or strength training, he offers remote consultations to people all over the world. He also teaches online classes on strength training and injuries. Learn more. In this interview, Tyler explains how we should be training our fingers for endurance climbing. Normally, we’re training strength or strength endurance on the hangboard by hanging with bodyweight, a pulley system, or weight attached to our bodies. However, Tyler talks about how we can just pull on the hangboard, without our feet leaving the ground, and increase our reps in order to train for long, endurance climbs. Tyler recently wrote an article on this topic for TrainingBeta, called To Pull or Hang, and this interview is a supplement to that article. If you haven’t read it yet, and you’re interested in this topic, I highly recommend that you give it a read before or after listening to this interview. Tyler Nelson has a lot of qualifications, so I’m going to let his website sum those up for you: Tyler is a second generation chiropractor whose father was a leader in chiropractic sports medicine for many years. In graduate school he did a dual doctorate and masters degree program in exercise science with an emphasis on tendon loading. He completed his masters degree at BYU and was a physician for the athletics department for 4 years out of school. He currently is the owner of Camp4 Human Performance where he treats clients through his license as a chiropractic physician. He also teaches anatomy and physiology at a local college in Utah and is an instructor for the Performance Climbing Coach seminar series and a certified instructor for gobstrong. When he’s not working he’s climbing or hiking outside with his family. You can find Tyler in Salt Lake City at his clinic, Camp 4 Human Performance, where he tests athletes, creates training programs, and treats all kinds of athletes for injuries. I met Tyler at Steve Bechtel’s first Performance Climbing Coach Seminar in Lander in May of 2017, where we were both instructors. Since then I’ve done 4 more seminars and 7 other podcast episodes with him. You could say he’s a bit of a staple around here. He is well-spoken and a wealth of knowledge about how the human body responds to climbing and training. This episode of Trial Lawyer Talk was recorded on Juneteenth. Employment attorney Genie Harrison discusses a famous case for a black firefighter that caused racial division in Los Angeles. What started as an incident of racial harassment and discrimination, very quickly grew into a hostile work environment with retaliation. Ultimately, it became a constructive termination case ending a career. About Genie Harrison Genie Harrison practices law in Los Angeles, CA. Genie Harrison Law Firm represents victims of wrongful termination, sexual harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and other employee rights violations. Ms. Harrison is the President-Elect of CAALA, the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. CAALA is the country’s largest local association of plaintiffs’ trial attorneys. About this Case Ms. Harrison’s client Tennie was a fire fighter at Fire Station No. 5 in Weschester, CA. Tennie’s captains and coworkers fed him dog food in a racially motivated prank. They knew they would get away with the prank because the fire department did not have a universal process for workplace investigations. After the prank, Tennie didn’t feel safe and went out on leave. When Tennie returned to work, he faced a potentially life-threatening act of discrimination. Just prior to a “flash over” training exercise, someone tampered with his oxygen tank and mask. Tennie lost trust that he would be safe and taken care of by his fire fighting peers. “Trust is so integral and key to being able to function as a fire fighter. Once that trust was completely and irretrievable broken, Tennie could no longer do the job.” Tennie left the department just shy of his retirement and pension. Ms. Harrison tells the story of the case. She uncovered systemic violations, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation across Los Angeles fire stations. She explains that “Tennie broke my heart.” This case helped spark necessary changes in the Los Angeles Fire Department. Ms. Harrison now works together with community groups and civil rights organizations to create systemic change. She said, “When there are committed people who remain focused on what’s right, we can make the change happen and it can be different and it can be substantially, measurably better.” Other Episodes of Trial Lawyer Talk To listen to other episodes of Trial Lawyer Talk and hear from the best trial lawyers in the country, go here.
Justin Tosi and Brandon Warmke talk about their new book Grandstanding: The Use and Abuse of Moral Talk on this episode. They explain how moral grandstanding differs from other vices like hypocrisy, and how it’s not the same as virtue signaling. They talk about psychological research that they have done with Joshua Green to create the grandstanding scale, which measures the motives for grandstanding, namely, prestige and dominance. Their findings suggest that the most partisan people are the most likely to engage in moral grandstanding. You can follow Justin Tosi and Brandon Warmke on Twitter @JustinTosi and @BrandonWarmke. Welcome back to part two of our conversation with licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Katie Penry (drkatiepenry.com) ! Dr. Penry recently released her first book, The Parenting Toddlers Workbook (https://amzn.to/3ctyhSh) , and as I read through the book, the portions that jumped out to me the most were about how to set loving limits with our young children–and I really feel that those principles can be applicable to children as they age as well. Obviously the particulars of situations where limits are needed will change and get more nuanced as children get older, but the necessity of parents having loving limits and the ability to hold to them does not change. So I hope these episodes will be helpful to you, regardless of the ages of your children. Last week (https://3in30podcast.com/captivate-podcast/136-how-to-set-loving-limits-with-your-children-dr-katie-penry/) , Katie and I discussed why it’s actually extremely loving to set limits for our children–loving for them AND for ourselves. She went on to explain that the KEY to being able to hold to loving limits for our kids is to anchor them in our unique family values, our individual needs as mothers, and our deepest hopes for our children. In today’s episode, we will be diving deeper into HOW to actually hold to your limits, once you’ve decided what they will be, by remember three principles: Three Takeaways for Holding Limits with your Children 1) Know the template for introducing and supporting limits: -Acknowledge the feeling that is leading to the behavior. (“You are so excited to be here and have so much energy from being trapped in the car all day! Of course you are! But…”) -State the limit clearly. (“In my house, we don’t jump on furniture, even when we’re really excited.”) -Tell them what they can do. (“You are welcome to go outside and jump on my trampoline!) -If needed, help them respect the limit. (“Here let me take your hand and show you where the trampoline is.”) -Validate their feelings if they are upset about the consequence. (“I know it’s disappointing when we can’t do what we want to do. I’ve felt that too.”) 2) Use “consequence couplets” to make natural consequences matter-of-fact and compassionate. (“If you do this, then this will happen.”) 3) Be decisive with your children. Remember that clear and consistent is kind, while flexible and ambiguous is confusing. Friends, I’m so glad you have joined us for this two-part series, and I hope you know that I am cheering you on as you work to set more loving limits in your home. >>Please join us this Thursday, July 9th at 10:00 a.m. MST for an online book launch party and Live Q&A with me and Dr. Katie Penry! I am so excited to celebrate her and to introduce her to all of you in a Live format. Sign up at 3in30podcast.com/booklaunch (3in30podcast.com/booklaunch ) and bring your questions about parenting toddlers!<< Quotes from the Episode "Clear and consistent is kind; ambiguous and flexible is not." "I don't view myself as the enforcer; I view myself as the person who helps them cope with the consequence." "Children need to feel the confident decisiveness of their parents." "When kids can expect the same consequences, that creates safety for them." "The compassion that you show for your child after you make a decision is also a compassion that you can extend to yourself."
