This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with Who by Fire director Philippe Lesage and actor Noah Parker. An NYFF62 Main Slate selection, Who by Fire is now playing at Film at Lincoln Center with in-person Q&As at select screenings opening weekend. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/fire A getaway at a secluded log cabin in the forest becomes the site of escalating, multigenerational tensions and anxieties in this disquieting, impeccably mounted coming-of-age drama from Quebecois filmmaker Philippe Lesage (Genesis, New Directors/New Films 2019). Ostensibly a merry reunion between well-known film director Blake Cadieux (Arieh Worthalter) and his longtime friend and former collaborator Albert Gary (Paul Ahmarani), the vacation gradually becomes something far more complex and less stable, especially with the combustible admixture of Albert's teen son's best friend, Jeff (Noah Parker), and Albert's self-asserting daughter Aliocha (Aurélia Arandi-Longpré). Long-simmering middle-aged resentments surface, set against the anxieties of the young, all captured sensitively by Lesage, who in recent years has proven unparalleled in evoking the psychological contours of teenagers finding their paths through treacherous emotional landscapes. Featuring thrillingly choreographed dinner sequences of mounting tension, Who by Fire confirms Lesage as a major contemporary filmmaker, with its assured tonal negotiation of the naturalistic and the oneiric, the joyous (especially an epic dance interlude to The B-52s) and the ominous. This conversation was moderated by NYFF selection committee member K. Austin Collins.

Hard Truths opens at Film at Lincoln Center for an exclusive one-week running beginning December 6. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/truths Mike Leigh returns to a contemporary milieu for the first time since Another Year for this raw, uncompromising domestic drama that continues the great British filmmaker's inquiries into the possibility for happiness and the limits of human connection. In a gutsy, excoriating performance, Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Oscar nominee for Leigh's Secrets & Lies) absorbs herself completely into the role of Pansy, a middle-aged, working-class woman whose emotional and physical health problems have metastasized into a profound and relentless anger that's become toxic for everyone around her, including her husband, grown son, doctors, and even strangers on the street. Raging against every aspect of her domestic life and fearful of the world beyond, Pansy only finds potential solace in the unwavering love of her sister. Bringing his customary, thrilling eye for the details of human behavior and the complexities of social interaction, Leigh has created in close collaboration with his extraordinary cast a rigorous and unflinching look at a life in freefall. This conversation was moderated by NYFF programmer K. Austin Collins.

On today's NYFF62 podcast, we welcome director Paul Schrader and cast members Uma Thurman and Michael Imperioli to discuss their film Oh, Canada, which made its U.S. Premiere in the Main Slate of this year's festival. The discussion was moderated by NYFF programmer K. Austin Collins. In an unvarnished, commanding performance, Richard Gere plays Leonard Fife, a celebrated political documentarian who has reached the end of his life. Constructed with nonlinear flashbacks featuring Jacob Elordi as a young Leonard, the film passes in and out of different time periods, back to the 1960s, matching the slippery consciousness of its storyteller. Adapted from the book Foregone by Russell Banks, Paul Schrader's emotionally naked drama feels like a direct address to the viewer, a filmmaker's reckoning with his formidable status and persona. Tickets to the New York Film Festival are moving fast! Get up-to-date information on all available tickets on a daily basis by visiting filmlinc.org/tix. Oh, Canada will be released in theaters on December 6, courtesy of Kino Lorber.

One century ago on Memorial Day — Friday, May 30, 1924 — the campus community gathered to dedicate a permanent landmark honoring former Notre Dame students who had died in or as a result of the Great War. Today, the east entrance of the Basilica has the familiar phrase “God, Country, Notre Dame” engraved above the oaken double doors and is known affectionately as the World War I Memorial Door. Celebrate the spirit of this special anniversary as we honor and remember members of our Notre Dame family who gave their lives. We are mindful of the ways the simple phrase “God, Country, Notre Dame” has become a rallying cry, and how the World War I Memorial Door has become an iconic place of pilgrimage and a symbol of faith, patriotism, and loyalty to all who love Notre Dame. Our speaker lineup is a shining example of the “God, Country, Notre Dame” ethos – just like Fr. Ted.Presenter: Rev. In this episode, critic K. Austin Collins joins hosts Catherine Nichols and Isaac Butler to discuss Albanian author Ismail Kadare's 1971 novel The General of the Dead Army. In this novel, an Italian general comes to Albania 20 years after World War II to find the bodies of Italian soldiers who died there and return them to their families, and ends up in a small village looking for the remains of a particular army captain with a particularly brutal reputation. Working as a writer in the Stalinist Albania of Enver Hoxha, Ismail Kadare became an international literary figure and a preeminent commenter on totalitarianism. His nominating juror for the Neustadt Prize wrote: "No one since Kafka has delved into the infernal mechanism of totalitarian power and its impact on the human soul in as much hypnotic depth as Kadare." This week, we sat down with critics K. Austin Collins and Mayukh Sen—to talk about one of the most enduring motifs in movie history: the double.  We delved into a hand-picked selection of mirroring movies, including Brian de Palma's underrated Femme Fatale, Susan Seidelman's Desperately Seeking Susan, Carlos Saura's Peppermint Frappé, and Bimal Roy's Madhumati, a film released the same year as—and with some eerie similarities to—that urtext of double features, Hitchcock's Vertigo.  As we discovered, doubles, mirrors, and dubious impersonators can be found in nearly every era and genre of cinema, with the trope generating an apparently endless variety of themes, narrative forms, and interpretations.

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we’re revisiting our conversation with Jia Zhangke from the 58th New York Film Festival, moderated by NYFF programmer K. Austin Collins, in anticipation of the filmmaker’s latest feature, Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue, which is now playing in our theaters. The preeminent cinematic chronicler of 21st-century China, Jia Zhangke turns his sights to the more distant past in his surprising, complexly wrought new documentary. In Shanxi province, where Jia grew up, the filmmaker gathers three prominent authors to create a tapestry of testimonies about the drastic changes in Chinese life and culture that began with the social revolution of the ’50s. Jia tells a wide-ranging, discursive story that functions as a reminder of the essential power of verbally passing down history to future generations. Continue the conversation with the filmmaker by tuning into a virtual live discussion on June 2 at 8PM, hosted by the Asia Society. Go to filmlinc.org/swimming for tickets and more information.

Danyka Nadeau Au5 - Vapour Au5 is the EDM solo project of Austin Collins, a 22 year old electronic music producer from New Jersey. I have been a musician my entire life and began producing at age 12. I combine elements of electro, progressive house, trance, and dubstep to create what I like to call "trancestep". I strive for pristine sound quality, extreme dynamic energy, beautiful intricate melody and progressions, and cutting edge sound design to present a unique musical experience to the listener; something more than just dance music. I have had releases on OWSLA, Monstercat, Viper Recordings, Adapted Records, Rottun Recordings, Armada Music, Walt Disney Records/Pixar, and Atom Recordings with multiple releases hitting the top 10 on Beatport, with my single with Fractal "Halcyon" hitting #1 on Beatport Dubstep Charts.
