This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're delighted to be joined by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace the filmmakers behind the fantastic new 00s indie film Meet Me In The Bathroom. Based on the renowned, respected book by Lizzy Goodman of the same name, they have pulled together stunning archive footage from the New York scene, giving incredible insights into bands such as The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, Interpol, LCD Soundsystem, Moldy Peaches and more. From energetic, chaotic live shows to capturing those artists at their most vulnerable and natural back stage or on the tour bus, it is a must-watch movie, which you can see in UK cinemas or stream on Amazon Video, Apple TV and Microsoft. Our series of bonus podcasts continues with Mark Greaney from JJ72 picking his favourite album of the 00s. He goes with () by Sigur Ros - an album name hard to pronounce! Reflecting on the album, Mark discusses the power of music to transport us back to moments in time and we also debate the importance of understandable lyrics in music, with this LP sung in 'Hopelandic', a made up language. Sigur Ros of course had success with Hoppípolla from their follow-up album Takk... being used in a series of adverts and TV montages. This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're delighted to be joined by Mark Greaney, formerly the frontman of JJ72. The band burst out of Dublin at the start of 2000 and were playing big festival shows and supporting huge acts when they were only just turning 20. Mark reflects on that boom and how they capitalised on the buzz around the band. But within two years Mark says the music scene had changed dramatically. Why? Because of The Libertines, he says. Mark discusses how the sudden shift from bands formed in the late 90s to ones formed in the early years of the 00s changed the landscape. We discuss how JJ72's two albums were put together, including some of their biggest hits such as Oxygen, and Mark - who works at BIMM Institute Dublin and has taught the likes of Fontaines DC - reveals potential plans for the previously unreleased third album! This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're delighted to be joined by Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris from The Kooks. Their debut album Inside In/Inside Out is a classic of the era and brought the boys huge success, with tracks like Naive being played everywhere in the mid '00s - and the love for that band was recently underlined at some standout anniversary shows. This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're joined by David Jordan and Jim Maddock from Air Traffic. One of BBC's Sounds of 2007, Air Traffic were a band in demand and, despite being still in their teens, had record labels fighting for their signatures. They ended up on a major label with EMI - and tell us about the excessive spending they enjoyed as part of that deal. Sticking with the financials, we also learn about how band members get paid as part of a deal like that. But it wasn't all roses, with the guys discussing the impact of a vicious review in the NME on both their mental health and their trajectory. In a wide-ranging chat we also find out how the band strangely became really big in Belgium - and why they went out to buy their own personal pool cues during the recording of their album... Our series of bonus podcasts continues with James Walsh from Starsailor picking his favourite album of the 00s. James makes the case for Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as his favourite of the 2000s. The band actually had to fight to get this released, with their record label refusing to put it out. That led to the band streaming it for free on their website before a different record company released it the following the year. And it was a good job they fought for it too, with the album critically acclaimed and going on to be a big seller! James explains what makes the album special. This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're joined by James Walsh from Starsailor. It's 20 years since the band's huge debut album Love Is Here landed and with Starsailor about to head off on an anniversary tour it was the perfect time for James to reflect on how that LP was written, its reception... and the pain of missing out on No1 to Kylie Minogue! He also tells us how Four To The Floor from their second album became a remixed club hit in Europe, what it was like supporting The Rolling Stones, and working with Phil Spector. We also chart the band's journey from being labelled as 'The best new band in Britain' by NME through to their upcoming tour and James' prolific solo work. Starsailor fan? This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we chat to Chris Cester from Jet. He tells us about the Australian music scene - or lack of it - when they were forming in the early 2000s and how The Vines drew the music industry's attention Down Under, allowing Jet to capitalise with their brilliant collection of throw-back rock 'n' roll. It could have been very different if it wasn't for a lyric change on 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl', while Chris reflects on how that song and their debut album Get Born launched the band to global success and into a wild, excessive world. From an all-expenses paid month of extreme luxury in Barbados to touring with legendary bands such as Oasis and The Rolling Stones, Chris has some brilliant stories to share. He also discusses the band's follow-up two albums and the bumpy ride they went on through those records, and his new project, The Mystic Knights of Amnesia - named by Noel Gallagher - and their album which is set to launch in 2022. However, he also gives a shout out to The Video Nasties album On All Fours as the lost indie gem of the era. That got us thinking - what albums from the 00s deserve more love? Pete and Rich make their selections... PLUS! On our full length chat with Fred, he put a plea out to our listeners, asking if anyone had the MP3 of the Max Carlish Megamix he made in the mid-2000s... and the file has been found! A little put out - and after experimenting with Ox Eagle Lion Man - Fred returned to the stage and found success with Spector and their brilliant blend of pop-indie-rock. This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we catch up with Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence from New Young Pony Club. The band came to the fore in the 00s with their blend of disco and electro punk, and their huge track Ice Cream was played everywhere. Tahita tells us about the big effort that went into nailing the brilliant lyrics to that top tune. With the success of that track and their debut album, Fantastic Playroom, New Young Pony Club were propelled around the world on tour, playing from Hong Kong to Kazakhstan, New York to Sri Lanka and most places in between. The pair share some fantastic stories from those trips. The Boys in the Band Podcast is back! After an extended dry January we return with a storming episode with Matt Bowman, the lead singer of The Pigeon Detectives. Matt lifts the lid on the story of the band, including how they turned up to record their first album without enough songs but ended up turning around their huge-selling debut and a string of hits. And then how they did all over again 12 months later. There are stories about their riotous tours and following in the footsteps of their heroes. Plus a unique tale about playing on stage with eccentric former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino! We also get him to tell the story behind their famous - and fantastic Avril Lavigne cover for Radio 1's Live Lounge! The Pigeon Detectives fan? We bring you a Boys in the Band Podcast Christmas Special with Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, the lead singer of The Hives! We chat to Pelle about the band's incredible breakthrough in 2000, seven years into their journey, and how former Oasis manager Alan McGee helped them on their rise. Plus we get the story behind their iconic live shows: the look, the persona, the connection with the crowd... We talk about the hits, rhyming patterns in a second language, and the latest on new music news. Along with all that, Pelle also tells us about The Hives' World Wide Web World Tour - a special series of virtual live shows coming in 2021. The Hives fan?
