Episode 32: John

In today’s episode, I speak with John. John grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a family that was very chill about their Christianity. When John prayed the sinner’s prayer at a YMCA camp, his family wasn’t cool with it. But John was hooked. He eventually threw away his KISS albums. In his young adult life, his faith cooled a bit until he met a special someone. His girlfriend was very passionate about her faith and so John’s faith was revitalized through his relationship with her. He decided to go to Bible school. He and his girlfriend married and they eventually were spending all their time at the church. Even with a newborn and very little income, the young couple tithed, believing in the doctrine of prosperity gospel. They were groomed by their pastor to plant a church. John naturally developed an interest in doing church-like work outside of a church setting which did not sit well with his spiritual leaders. Finally, when researching the basis for tithing, he found himself unintentionally beginning his deconstruction journey. John gradually moved into a gentler version of god, inspired by Buddhism and practicing meditation. He began to research how the brain works which changed how he saw everything, eventually calling himself an atheist. Now he embraces Buddhist teachings about yielding to overcome. I hope you enjoy this conversation with my friend John. It's Everyone's Autonomous' ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY! This is a special episode off the usual biweekly release with a special guest. Today I interview... my husband of ten years: Keith. Not like most episodes, this is more of a behind-the-scenes of Marie's life. We talk about who we were when we met, our first date and our second date (which never really ended). We get into a healthy debate about bitching about those we don't agree with. Then Marie drops a bomb for the audience regarding a personal realization. Lastly, we share tips on how to say goodnight to someone you love. I hope you enjoy this episode. We really enjoyed making it. *****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Emily Hedrick grew up Mennonite with a heavy dose of evangelical fundamentalism. When she was nine, she had dreams about preaching in front of her church, she also thought regularly about what it would be like to burn in hell for eternity and be abandoned by everyone she loved after the rapture. Needless to say, it was a traumatic year. By 19 she was a self-described God killer, but couldn't keep herself from being involved in church - it gave her meaning and a place to belong... and she was good at it - so she decided to follow through on her dreams of preaching at 9, hoping she could be a positive force to speak out against violent theology in the church. At 25 she emerged from divinity school with a Masters in Divinity, bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Within 4 years of pastoring, she was burnt out and ready to leave it all behind. Now she's recovering and also doing the work she had hoped to be doing in the church - helping others identify leftover toxic theology in their minds and bodies so they can replace it with ideas and habits that foster healing and growth.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emilyhedrickcoachingWebsite: https://emilyhedrickorg.wordpress.comhttps://journeyfree.org/new-religious-recovery-bootcamp/*****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. In this episode, I interview Effy Blue and Jacqueline Misla of "Curious Fox". We discuss ditching corporate America for more fulfilling work. That work? Changing the "noise" of culture, helping people realize there are more options than those presented to us. Effy grew up in Turkey, a secular country at the time, raised by liberal, intellectual parents. Religion in her household was always discussed as theology. She missed all the gender role memos and became a self-proclaimed nerd. Whereas, Jacqui got all the memos from culture, being raised Christian in NYC. She was a questioner and called bullshit, much to her community's dismay and disapproval. She got her masters in social work and worked to dismantle systems that create narratives. To this day, she continues to struggle with accepting her humanity. Together, they work on Curious Fox to give people permission to live their lives how they want and the inspiration for it. It comes down to narratives vs. options. Stay curious. Jacqueline: IG – https://www.instagram.com/jacquelinemisla/Website – https://www.jacquelinemisla.com/ Effy: IG: @coacheffyblueFB facebook.com/coacheffyblueCF:IG – https://www.instagram.com/wearecuriousfoxes/Website – https://www.wearecuriousfoxes.com/Podcast - https://open.spotify.com/show/4VJXRDSdfiCNSWNwelosGx*****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Bethany's dad, also a preacher's son, was in the air force so her family moved around a lot. Raised in a highly restrictive Christian environment, Bethany wasn't allowed to wear pants with pockets, watch Casper, use wishing wells, or own Troll dolls. Her mother a narcissist, Bethany wasn't allowed to have feelings. Her grandma finally bought her a Bible that was more readable than the "old people" version (think KJV) which got her amped up about her faith and won the, not the approval, but higher demands from her parents. Wearing a WWJD bracelet, Bethany aimed to be a witness through events like "See You at the Flag". Bethany experienced a euphoria many of us are familiar with when called to the altar during Christian youth conferences. She married her high school sweetheart which got her out of her parents' home and authority. Bethany began to find some distance from her parents' beliefs, sought therapy, and unpacked her history with codependency. When confronted with a parenting conflict, she began to seek out other methods of rearing children which oddly enough exposed her to people like Hemant Mehta and Seth Andrews. She began to remediate her education and found a secular community to support her. Enjoying "spiritual" feelings in a secular environment free of dogma and woo-woo, she found her grounding again. Em was raised Lutheran and attended the parochial school associated with her synod until, in the mid-80's, her mother was "born again". What followed was a whirlwind of home churches, demons and deliverance, Jews for Jesus Seders, Bill Gothard seminars, and plenty of good old fashioned sexual shame. Reclaiming her physical and mental autonomy and supporting others in claiming their own autonomy has been Em's life work. Whether as a nurse attending births and encouraging empowerment of the birthing person, providing evidence based information & compassionate care during abortion or after a sexual assault, or later as a sex worker and sex workers' rights advocate, Em endeavors to dissect and dismantle the injurious tenets of the just world belief system in which she was raised.Em's links:Medium: https://medium.com/@one_revolting_womanBest written pro-sex worker essays:https://salvage.zone/in-print/marxism-for-whores/Writing by Sex Workers: http://titsandsass.com/Supportive Organizations (aka, not "savior" orgs) run by Sex Workers:https://www.hips.org/about.html. Today I interview licensed social worker and therapist, Britt Frank, who you can find on Instagram. I reached out to Britta several months ago because I follow her on Instagram and LOVE her take on mental health. I never really expected her to agree to an interview. Imposter syndrome and all that. Figured she was too busy and good for me and this little show of 500 listeners. But she was game! I didn’t really know what to expect because I hadn’t made her sign a pledge of being an exvangelical or anything. But her work is so powerful and in alignment with so much of how I see the world, in that, we are not good nor bad, language is powerful, and we are beautiful apes. It’s days later and I’m still thinking about this interview. This interview is really going to challenge you. We challenge a lot of mainstream ways of looking at and describing mental health. So consume this with curiosity and if it sits uncomfortably with you, that’s okay. I’m not making a black & white stand here. Just exploring. Anyways, I fucking ADORE Britt. I was already a huge fan girl because of her Instagram and getting the chance to interview her for 90 minutes was such a pleasure. Turns out she lives in Kansas, which I visit twice a year where there’s not a pandemic, so I’m super psyched to grab a beer with her and deconstruct all the narratives. I hope you enjoy this episode.*****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Our guest for this episode is our good friend Joe Labriola. His main job is teaching writing and rhetoric at Stony Brook University, but he also spends countless hours walking up and down the local beaches to pick up trash. This type of beach cleaning is helpful to the local environment and to ocean health in general, but it also fits in perfectly with the https://exploringkodawari.blog/what-is-kodawari/ (ethos of kodawari). This is because no matter how much garbage you pick up there will always be more. So we get into the specifics of why he beach cleans, what types of garbage he tends to find, and how it helps the environment. And more spiritually/personally, we tried to dig under the service to figure out what motivates people to help out in this way, especially considering that it's a very Sisyphus like struggle because no matter how much you clean there is always more garbage. Today I interview Karl and Rene, porn stars and hosts of a new podcast entitled Enthusiastic Consent. I have been good friends with Karl for about a year now and I had the privilege of meeting Rene this February at Dave Warnock’s beach week in Florida. In this episode we talk about their passion to destroy sexual shame narratives in our culture. They both have very different stories. Karl guzzled the kool-aid whereas Rene never took it too terribly seriously. We discuss the madonna/whore complex, juxtaposing the experiences of Rene with mine. I get pretty vulnerable in this interview as I share about a lifetime of never feeling safe sharing and showing my sexuality in a culture that is ready to be disgusted by you or to objectify you. This is another interview that had me reeling for a few days afterwards and so I’m very excited to share it with you and hope you find it challenging as well. Much love to Karl and Rene. Today I speak with Mandisa Thomas. Mandisa is a native of New York City and is the founder and President of Black Nonbelievers, Inc. Although never formally indoctrinated into belief, Mandisa was heavily exposed to Christianity, Black Nationalism, and Islam. As a child she loved reading, and enjoyed various tales of Gods from different cultures, including Greek and Ghanaian. “Through reading these stories and being taught about other cultures at an early age, I quickly noticed that there were similarities and differences between those deities and the God of the Christian Bible. I couldn’t help but wonder what made this God so special that he warrants such prevalence today.” she recalls.Mandisa has many media appearances to her credit, including CBS Sunday Morning, CNN.com, and Playboy, The Humanist, and JET magazines. She has been a guest on podcasts such as The Humanist Hour and Ask an Atheist, as well as the documentaries Contradiction and My Week in Atheism. Mandisa currently serves on the Boards for American Atheists and the American Humanist Association, and previously for Foundation Beyond Belief, and the Secular Coalition for America. She is also an active speaker and has presented at conferences/conventions for the Freedom from Religion Foundation, Secular Student Alliance, and many others. In 2019, Mandisa was the recipient of the Secular Student Alliance’s Backbone Award and named the Freedom from Religion Foundation’s Freethought Heroine. She was also the Unitarian Universalist Humanist Association’s 2018 Person of the Year.As the president of Black Nonbelievers, Mandisa encourages more Blacks to come out and stand strong with their nonbelief in the face of such strong religious overtones. "The more we make our presence known, the better our chances of working together to turn around some of the disparities we face. We are NOT alone."*****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Her mom exposed her to religion at the age of 10 with the intention of it being a positive influence. When Amanda attended bible camp at the age of 15 she was given the god ultimatum and prayed the prayer of salvation. She became an unapologetic bible thumper, even praying for her own mom who wasn’t religious enough in Amanda's estimation. She met her husband and her religious community became very, very involved in their relationship. She was 24 and they got married within 6 months. We talk about the influence of purity culture on their relationship. Her husband has recently deconverted as well and they’ve opened up their relationship which has resulted in more honest and openness with each other. As a content warning, we do touch on Amanda’s experiences of sexual abuse and how it has impacted her later on in life. *****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Today I interview Abigail. Abigail’s parents converted to Christianity during the Jesus movement. They put their children into homeschooling, following the Dare to Discipline approach. Her parents were so passionate about their faith that they often had a rotating cast of homeless people and battered spouses staying in their home with their children for the express purpose of sharing Christianity with them during a vulnerable period of their lives. Abigail’s education suffered under this structure. Growing up, Abigail had to force herself to learn how to relate to other people given her extremely sheltered upbringing. She was galvanized in her faith by joining her brother’s revival work in Toronto but then was shocked when her parents abandoned her on Canada and returned back to the UK without her. Abigail had to figure out how to survive on her own. One final note, just for context, this interview was recorded before COVID19. I hope you enjoy this episode. She talks about how she teaches that everyone is an expert. We talk about how to “love” others by being open to the knowledge of everyone’s empathetic story. We also talk about how to apologize in a context without religious ritualistic mantras, indulgences, murdering god men, or killing cattle and sheep. Today I interview Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, the well known televangelists. I can only imagine what you may be thinking about this upcoming interview. What the fuck, Marie? Yup, I’ll grant you that it’s an odd selection, right? I have known Jay for nearly a year. He runs Revolution Church out of Minneapolis which I have attended a handful of times and where I even spoke once. His church has no doctrine, really. It’s a church of doubt attended by Christians, agnostics, and atheists alike. It’s weird. I thought it was weird from the day I learned about it and I still think it’s weird. However, I’m starting to get it. Do I feel driven to go to a church like that? Nope, definitely not. But I get what they’re doing. They’re exploring nuance and exploring repurposing the Bible without fundamentalism. Again, I don’t really get it, but I get it. I appreciate what they’re doing and I see that a lot of folx would like to land in a place like that. And anything that is a step away from fundamentalism is a step in the right direction, in my opinion. But we don’t talk a ton about that in this interview. The premise was to talk about managing anxiety in a COVID19 world. But of course, as I predicted, we found a few rabbit trails. And I’ll let you enjoy finding out what those are. Proceed into this interview with caution as we do talk about some issues like suicide.*****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Today I interview my friend, Caroline Cash. Straight away, I’d like to mention that this episode was recorded before COVID19. It’s weird to listen to content right now that doesn’t in some way revolve around COVID19. Yet here we are! I think you’ll enjoy this episode. Caroline grew up in Methodist but attended an evangelical school. When she got married, she experienced a narrative involving obligation to have sex with her partner. She has since deconstructed and has moved on to living her life on her terms. In this episode, we also hit on the topic of sexual assault, so please proceed with caution if that is something you don’t have space for right now. I interviewed Caroline at Dave Warnock’s beach week in Florida last month, which feels like a decade ago now. I got to dance, smoke, and sing with Caroline that week and I think she’s pretty much the shit. I hope you enjoy this interview.*****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Well hey there everyone.             We interrupt our normal broadcasting channel, to bring you news that the UK overwhelmingly voted for Brexit in the recent December 12th General Election!   This means that we have Boris Johnson and a Conservative government for the next five years, and now, almost everyone I know is in a coma!   Where has the joy gone?  It disintegrated, when Black people reflected on what the outcome of the election means for the quality of life and experiences we are going to have over the next five depressing years! But what you might not know, is that there were two general elections taking place on 12th December 2019.  There was the general election that so called, stupid people, i.e. the mass general public - had been groomed into believing, would deliver the opportunity to make Britain great again, by 'getting Brexit done'!  And, then, there was the real reason for the election, which was to deliver a huge financial windfall to the real people running the country.  Listen in, as I take you through this sordid story and also, as I try to lift your spirits to inspire you to not get 'mad' - but to get to your version of 'getting even'.
