On episode 60 of Beyond Labels & Limitations, John Graybill shares how he struggles with limb girdle muscular dystrophy. The struggle wasn't always the same over 26 years. When John was younger he believed himself to be the physical John. Naturally, whenever he lost an ability, he took it hard, and he tried to get that physical ability back.  It wasn't until John heard Wayne Dyer speak of an idea that "we are all spiritual beings having a human experience" did John start the shift. Now, John sees that whenever he gets down and the struggles of muscular dystrophy are heavy, it's because he has gone back into the belief that he is a physical being. This self inquiry is a life-long one but one we need to make if we are to go beyond muscular dystrophy. A homily based on the following Gospel reading from the Revised Common Lectionary:Meanwhile Herod, the ruler of Judea, had heard about Jesus, whose reputation had become widespread. Some people were saying, “John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and that is why such miraculous powers are at work in him.” Others said, “He is Elijah;” still others, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” When Herod heard of Jesus, he exclaimed, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead!”Now it was Herod who had ordered John arrested, chained and imprisoned on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom Herod had married. For John had told Herod, “It is against the Law for you to have your brother's wife.” As for Herodias, she was furious with John and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be good and holy, and kept him in custody. When Herod heard John speak he was very much disturbed; yet he was moved by John's words.Herodias had her chance one day when Herod on his birthday held a dinner for the court circle, military officers and leaders of Galilee. When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, this delighted Herod and the guests so much that he told the young woman, “Ask me anything you like and I will give it to you.” And Herod swore an oath, “I will give you anything you ask, even half of my entire realm!”She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” Herodias replied, “The head of John the Baptizer.” The woman hurried back to Herod and made her request: “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.”Herod was deeply distressed by this request, but remembering the oath he swore before the guests, he was reluctant to break his oath to her. So Herod immediately sent one of the bodyguards with orders to bring John's head. The guard beheaded John in prison, then brought the head in on a platter and gave it to the young woman, who gave it to her mother. On episode 57 of Beyond Labels & Limitations, John Graybill talks about how he sees his life with LGMD. John was diagnosed in 1995 at the age of 17. He thought his life was over when the doctors told him he had muscular dystrophy. John gave up on life. When John met Wayne Dyer, his perspective on life changed. He attended college, where he studied psychology, and started to look at how he saw himself with this disease. When John starts to unpack the reason for his letter, he uses a power packed word that we (weakly) translate as "fellowship." But he's talking about so much more. He's talking about a powerful connection that exists among God's people.

Have you ever been ambushed by your own assumptions? Few of us have had our expectations exploded quite as thoroughly as John the Baptist did. He was a prophet of fire, working for a God who has been called a "consuming fire." When John yields the stage to the One who "baptizes in fire," he expects there to be...well...fire! But divine judgment would be dispensed in a different way, at a different time, than the prophet supposed. We're in Luke, chapter 3 with Jim. If you're serious about achieving your goals, you have the ability to create the environment that will force you to produce results. I recently read a story about John Burke. In 2017 he was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Age Album. The intriguing part of his story is around a particular song on his album called “Earth Breaker.” When John composed the music for “Earth Breaker,” he couldn't actually play it. The song was too difficult for him. But that is exactly what he had planned for. He composed a song that was beyond his skill level and then played it over and over again until he could do it. John is best under pressure. He purposefully creates environments that force him to be at his best and most productive day after day. When he decides he's going to create a new album, he immediately decides when it will be completed and released. As I teach with setting goals, once you have your goals set, you need to work backwards to create your plans and timelines. Once John decides on a release date, he works backwards to map out the key dates and milestones. He books the studio for the day he will record the album, and then he organizes his personal schedule to ensure he's booked in his “creation time” over the next several months. Next, he commits to his goals publicly. He goes to social media and shares with his fan's information about his upcoming album. He tells his close family and friends about his goals. He creates the conditions and environment that will force him to succeed. His goals and success are predictable, because he's designed the plan and the environment that will make it happen. I have previously talked about being 100% committed to your goals. Are you committed at the same level as John Burke? Will you create the environment that will force you to succeed? How can you create the environment that will increase the pressure in your life?

On John's health journey, he explored vegetarian diets and vegan diets. In fact, he was vegan for almost seven years. One day, John found peace and realized that the only thing you need is to love. It made him double down on the practice of wellness, health, and vitality. The concept of health is so important and so fascinating that John is still passionate about it after all these years. The health space is a great place to be right now because a lot of people are waking up to it finally. [12:00] How To Use A Foam Roller And Lacrosse Ball Properly Hamstrings usually get very tight. So, put the lacrosse ball on a hard chair under the most tender points of the hamstring, and let your muscles sink into it. As you sink into it the ball, you're basically pinning that trigger point. Also, you will be alleviating the calcium deposit. Sawing away at a foam roller is not the best approach. Instead, use the pin and shear method on your foam roller. Using a foam roller or lacrosse ball is better after a workout rather than before. [20:50] Why John Wanted To Write A Book About Covid Honestly, John didn't want to write a book about Covid. However, the book is what we need because of Covid. When John says Rewilding Covid, it means taking your health into your own hands. Rewilding means tuning ourselves back into the wild aspect of what makes us a real human. Plus, it means that you're mimicking basically what our ancestors did naturally. For John, being wild means having freedom. Ideally, we will all wind up being in control of our spirit. “We are wild humans at heart.” -John Schott [31:40] The Power of Human Adaptability During Covid The one thing that we can control is how we interact with our environment and how we adapt. One of the most fascinating things about humans is our ability to adapt. As our environments change, we have to change with the environment. We need to help our body become more resilient, stronger, and better. Even if there is a virus in our environment, we know how to make changes and adapt. [38:55] What Is Grounding And Can It Improve Health? The beautiful thing about grounding is that it's free. We have generations and ancestral templates of being connected to the magnetic frequency of the Earth. The Earth has a pulse and a magnetic frequency that's anti-inflammatory, restorative, and rejuvenating. With grounding, your body can breathe, and your cells can breathe. For ten minutes each day, take your shoes off and put your feet on the bare ground. When grounding, you will feel less stress. [43:15] John Gives Tips On How You Can Become More Resilient Weave in movement throughout the day, as much as you can; it is very critical for overall health. John says that walking is very underrated. Going for long walks is extremely healthy, and it is restorative. Sometimes, what you need is more restoration. If you sit for long periods of time, stand up every thirty minutes and shake it out. Once that body starts feeling strong and good, it affects the way you think. When people have clogged limbs, and they're not able to detoxify properly. So, get moving! [45:20] The Importance of Proper Breathing For Overall Health Oxygen is life! Most of the time, people have cold hands and feet because they are not getting proper oxygen to the extremities. Sometimes, reproduction, libido, and the drive that we have for life will get challenged because of the lack of oxygenation. The way we breathe and what we're breathing is fundamental. Do deep diaphragmatic breathing through your nose – never through the mouth. Get good quality plants to help oxygenate the air. AND MUCH MORE! Scripture Reading: Revelation 10:9-11 I took the little scroll . . . and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. Revelation 10:10 Let’s reflect some more today on what it can mean to say that the good-news message of salvation (represented by the little scroll) is sweet and sour. When John, the narrator of this story, asked the angel to give him the little scroll, he was told, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’” We like the “sweet as honey” part, but we don’t like the idea of a sour stomach. Couldn’t the good news of God just linger in our mouths and not sink down deep inside? When I think about this, I am reminded of my friend Nuygen who, as an adult, came to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Nuygen took in the good news and savored it. He read God’s Word, the Bible, and he studied it and loved it. Then one day he reflected on Jesus’ teaching that says, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Nuygen had grown up in Vietnam in the 1970s, and his body still carried scars inflicted by ruthless enemies. Now the good-news message, which had tasted so sweet, turned sour in his stomach. Nuygen’s memories of those scars gave him deep pain and bitterness and anger. But, in Christ, his faith grew stronger as his anger turned to forgiveness. Faith in Jesus requires letting God’s Word sink deep down inside us to change us, wherever we may need to be changed—and healed. Spirit of God, sink your Word deep inside me to make changes where I need them. Amen.

When John wrote the book and it came time to look for images from the film. He learned at the last minute that the studio didn't save anything. So he had to source images and production stills from the fan community and some of the people that worked behind the scenes on the film. Added to all of this great stuff. I'd love to meet you in the group.   Important Events   May 10, 1589 Today is the anniversary of the burial of the English author, translator, and Clerk to the Kitchen of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Leonard Mascall - who was buried at Buckinghamshire. Mascall published several books; all were aimed at household management. In 1572 Leonardpublished A Booke of the Arte and Maner Howe to Plante and Graffe All Sortes of Trees. Along with cultivating fruit trees, this book was the first to refer to the secateurs or a pruning knife. The word secateurs is taken from the Latin secare, ‘to cut.’ Mascall's last book was published a year after he died, and it was called The Booke of Engines and Traps. In it, Leonard shared 34 traps and nine recipes for poison bates, most of which were dedicated to trapping mice. But Leonard also wrote about how to control slugs and snails in the garden - he described picking them off by hand early in the morning. While I was researching Leonard Mascall, I came across a bit of his advice regarding the placement of tender trees and shrubs from The Guardian (www.theguardian.com), Dec 9, 1891: "Leonard Mascall said, 'Most part of trees do love the sun at noon, and yet the south wind is very contrary against their nature, and specially the almond tree, the apricot, the mulberry, the fig tree, the pomegranate tree.' A gardener remarked: 'I am sure there is much in this. It is quite certain that all Japanese trees like shade and a north aspect; and the finest most fruitful old mulberry tree that I have ever seen is at Rochester, growing in a corner where it looks to the north and east, and is thoroughly protected from the south and west.'"   May 10, 1725  Today is the birthday of the botanist, famous professor, and founder of one of the leading botanical gardens in Europe — John Hope. Alive during the Scottish enlightenment, John left his mark on the royal botanic gardens, plant classification, and plant physiology. He was appointed as the King's botanist for Scotland and superintendent of the Royal Garden in Edinburgh. John worked to expand the space of the Royal Botanic Garden, and he turned it into a place for research. During John’s lifetime, Edinburgh was THE place to study medicine, and all medical students had to take botany courses. John created a school for botanists after spinning off the materia medica (pharmacy) department of the school, which allowed him to specialize exclusively in botany. John’s students traveled to Edinburgh from all over the world. All in, John taught over 1,700 students during his tenure — and they included the likes of James Edward Smith (the founder and first President of the Linnaean Society), Charles Drayton (the future Lt. Governor of South Carolina), Benjamin Rush (a signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder of Dickinson College), and Archibald Menzies, who became the Scottish botanist and explorer. By all accounts, John was a captivating instructor. He was one of the first two people to teach the Linnaean system. John also taught the natural system. And, he pioneered the use of big teaching diagrams or visual aids to teach his lectures. A field botanist, John encouraged his students to go out and investigate the Flora of Scotland, and he awarded a medal every year to the student who collected the best herbarium. With John's accomplishments came impressive wealth. When John died, he had amassed more than £12,000, which he had left for his wife. Today the genus Hopea is named after John Hope. And, there’s a magnificent beech tree that grows near the John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.   Unearthed Words You cannot have too many aconites. They cost, as I said before, about fifty shillings a thousand. A thousand will make a brave splash of color, which lasts a month. If you can afford ten thousand, you are mad not to buy them. There are so many exciting places you can put them. . . in the hollow of a felled tree, by the border of a pond, in a circle round a statue, or immediately under your window, so that you can press your nose against the glass when it is too cold to go out, and stare at them, and remember that spring is on its way. ― Beverley Nichols, Down the Garden Path   Grow That Garden Library My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Notes from a Writer's Eden. In this charmingly illustrated book, Meir shares his garden that lies on the perimeter of Israel’s Jezreel Valley, with the Carmel mountains rising up in the west. Meir’s garden is “neither neatly organized nor well kept,” and he adores his lemon tree, figs, and rescuing plants like a purple snapdragon from the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway.   Mitch Ginsburg of The Times of Israel wrote this after reading Meir’s book: “I went to sleep every night with the smell of fresh figs and lemons and the sound of birdsong in my ears and the image of Shalev’s beloved black cat, Kramer, the hero of many of his Hebrew children’s stories, sleeping the day away beneath the buckthorn tree.” Meir’s book starts out with a little story about the time he awoke to find a wedding party trampling his garden as they posed for photos. After the group insisted his garden couldn’t possibly be a real garden, he let them know they had three minutes before the sprinkler system turned on. Clever man. They left. He didn’t have a sprinkler system. This book is full of stories like this, and they feature marvelous topics like lupines, cyclamen, poppies, sea squill, a mole rat, a wasp nest, and compost - just to name a few. This book is 304 pages of garden bliss from a novelist who shares his garden with wit and love. And Celia decided her fate when she was just eight years old - that’s when she decided to become a scientist. She had been walking in an orchard when she suddenly recognized a plant she had heard her mother describe – the plant that looks like a bumble: the bee orchid. Later she recalled her excitement at seeing the plant the first time: “For the first time I knew the leaping of the heart, the sudden enlightenment, that were to become my passion… These moments are rare, and they come without warning, on ‘days to be marked with a white stone’.” And it is Cecelia Payne who said these wonderful quotes: “An admission of ignorance may well be a step to a new discovery.” And then this one (which harkened back to Payne's discovery of the bee orchid). “The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or understand something.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. John Ramstead John Ramstead is a husband, father, entrepreneur, and author of On Purpose, With Purpose. Ramstead knew from a young age that he wanted to be a pilot. However, when he got to college and was enrolled in the ROTC program, he never believed that he had what it took to be a pilot. After an inspiring talk with his father, John decided that he was going to take aviation classes and become a pilot. Throughout his studies, John had a mentor that held him accountable and challenged him to be the best that he could be. Ramstead finished first in his graduating class and got to pick the plane of his choice. After John retired from the Navy, he became an entrepreneur and founded the company Beyond Influence. In 2011, John encountered an accident that would alter the course of his life forever. During a work retreat, John was riding on a horse that bucked him off and sent him straight into a steel pipe, shattering his skull. The doctors told his wife and kids to fill out a living will because he was not going to make it. During his time in the hospital, the Lord spoke to John and told him that he would heal him. From that moment on, John decided to save the relationship with his wife and children and become the husband and father he was meant to be.  Marriage is all about skill. You can't just walk in and expect to wing it on the first try; it takes patience, practice, and most importantly - SKILL. Having a healthy relationship with your kids works the same way too. It's not about getting them to be on their best behavior, it's about bringing out the best in them, no matter if it's different than how you imagined. When John was near the end of his life, he discovered that it's not about what you leave for your family, it's about what you leave in them. What do you do when it seems that God is in attentive to your circumstances? Are you tempted to lose faith? Shut down, walk away, try and go it alone? Well, john, the Baptist feels you here. He is in prison, and his circumstances aren't looking good. In fact, it won't be long before he's executed. it's doubtful that he had this in mind when he went into the desert and began to preach. He was supposed to be the forerunner, the prophet who would go into the wilderness and prepare the way for the Lord's coming, for God's Messiah to show up. He was pretty clear on this. But what he's going through right now, in this chapter, he's not so clear on at this moment, he's in prison. He's awaiting his death. And so he sent some of his disciples to go and ask Jesus a question. Are you the guy or not? John's vision of his place in God's story is getting cloudy, and he wants some clarity. To john, it seems like God is being in-attentive to his circumstances. It seems like God's not coming through for him. And the temptation is for him to doubt. You can't blame john. In the end, he sent some of his servants to talk to Jesus. They asked him, Are You the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else? Notice how Jesus responds. He does not tell them. I'm the guy tell john, I'll break him out by noon. He's good to go. No, he doesn't say that. He tells them to report what they see in here. JOHN can't seem to see past his circumstances. Past the prison walls. He can't see past God's inactivity in his life. God's perceived inactivity have shrunk his vision down to the size of those prison walls. So Jesus wants john to see something beyond the walls of his prison. He tells John's friends to tell john what they see and what they hear. He wants his friend John, to see beyond his circumstances. The message Jesus sends back is this, "the blind received sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear the dead are raised. The good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me." It's as if he's telling john to hang in there. Hang in there, john. see beyond the walls of your prison cell. There's something bigger going on here. And maybe this is a message for you to today. Listen, your personal circumstances don't coincide with how God feels about you. Don't let your faith hinge on what God has or hasn't done for you lately. When your prison walls begin to shrink in on you and your vision matches the dimensions of that small vision. Then remember his message. The blind received side the lame walk those who have leprosy or cleanse the Deaf, hear the dead arrays and good news is preached to the poor. In other words, God is at work. He is not in attentive or neglectful of you. He is working all things out according to His purposes for you. When your circumstances come crashing in and your vision shrinks, be strengthened by the knowledge that God has his eye on you. When John's friends leave, and Jesus addresses the crowd, he says, Let me tell you something about john. There's no one like him. Jesus knew all about john. Jesus had not forgotten about john, Jesus had his eye on his friend, john. And the same is true for you. He is with you. He has not left you. He is not in attentive or neglectful of you. Let's allow Jesus to renew our vision of the God who is at work. The God who sees me. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so  

This Sunday we’ll be progressing forward in our examination of the Gospel of Luke – we’ll be reading ch 7:18-35 – be sure to read it over and use your imagination to step into the sandals of the characters.I imagine the dank, dark cell; hewn from rock under Herod’s desert palace. John the Baptizer has been cold and hungry, but he hasn’t stopped praying and trusting that Jesus will reveal who he is and come deliver him from this miserable place. When two of his disciples show up and call to him through the small hole that served as a window, John askes for news before receiving the bread they brought him.They communicate to him all the stories they have heard about Jesus’ activity. Hesitantly, they share the latest thing they’d learned. Jesus had healed the servant a Roman centurion, one under Herod’s command.John unconsciously takes a step back, starring at the messengers in disbelief. His mind shuffles through the memories of the cruel treatment he received at the hands of soldiers under Herod’s orders. Without realizing it, he rubs the scabbed over wounds on his head.“But….why?” A tear begins tracing a line through the dust on his cheek. “What is he doing?” he says, his voice trailing off.“Send a message to him…a question.”That’s the dramatic backstory we need to have in view as we read the passage this week.As a human being living on earth, you certainly have experienced disappointment at some point. Have you ever experienced disappointment in God, with how God is handling things here on earth? The people of Jesus’ day had high expectations for a messiah who would come and raise a supernaturally empowered army to overthrow their evil oppressors and bring salvation to Israel. When John asks if Jesus is really the Messiah, he’s wanting to know where the army is.What do we learn about God’s activity from Jesus’ response? What is the focus of Jesus’ activity? What should we be looking for when trying to discern Christ’s activity today?Even though Herod held John in prison, Jesus elevated him in his commendation, indicating his superiority over the puppet king who held him prisoner. But then he indicated that those who come after John…after Messiah has accomplished his work, would all be greater than John. Read Joel 2:28-29 and Acts 2:1-5 to gain some insight on that. ep -53 with John Martin in Puerto Vallarta Mexico Welcome to the Soberoso podcast where we invite guests and listeners from around the world to join us in "Sharing Our Passion For Recovery". John and his beautiful wife Nancy made the move from Canada to Mexico just a couple of years ago and are now living the dream life in Puerto Vallarta where they recently opened a men's substance abuse treatment center, but life wasn't always so good for John. In this episode John tells us how he tried many times to get sober doing things his way, Johns way, until the last time more than 20 years ago when he finally found the solution to ending his drinking and drugging. He tells us of what things were like for him growing up in a home where addiction and alcoholism was the norm. He swore that he would never become like his mother. That all went out the window around the age of 19 when he started drinking which quickly led to drugging and John realized immediately that he had an addictive personality and it was going to be a problem. Soon after his intro to booze and drugs he began living a double life, married with kids and living a life of lies. John shares with us how he crossed a line and no longer cared about the consequences he would face for the decisions he made as the addiction grew stronger. His then wife gave him an ultimatum and stated that if he relapsed again their marriage would be over and John walked out of the house and into addiction with no one looking over his shoulder. He ended up losing his best friend and has buried another 40 - 50 people to addiction. He was so numbed out on drugs that he had no feelings. Today he has rekindled his relationships with his children, his ex wife and was able to be there for his own mom as she was passing away as a sober woman later on in life. The gifts came back with sobriety. When John got clean and sober for the last time more than twenty years ago he promised that when he was done with the 12 steps that he would then do them with someone else and since then he has helped hundreds of people go through the big book and live a life in recovery. In todays hunting culture, people are told they can't go out and hunt unless they have the very best of everything. This week John talks about where the common man or woman should be spending their money on gear. It is in fact possible to go on a hunt without breaking the bank. When John went on his first elk hunt, he was wearing hand me down boots, a pack that was too small, and a $30 tent. John 20:1-31 As we study John's account of the events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus, we discover three different Greek words for "saw". When Mary saw the empty tomb, it was the physical act of seeing. When Peter saw inside the tomb, he took thoughtful attention to the details. When John entered the tomb, he saw and believed. He realized what had occurred. We may not have physically seen Him, but we see by faith in His Word.

In a dusty attic in the Yorkshire hills sits the life’s work of John Kingston, a man who spent decades investigating whether his own stepfather, Stanislaw Chrzanowski, was, in fact, a Nazi war criminal. Whilst most knew ‘Mr Stan’ as a friendly pensioner, growing fruit for his neighbours and zipping around his village in the Midlands on his mobility scooter, John was convinced he was hiding a dark secret. Unable to shake the terrifying bedtime stories his stepdad told him as a child, John spent his adult life trying to expose the truth. When John died in 2018, the year after his stepfather, the files, photographs, and hours of secret recordings he made were left boxed up in his attic, until now, when they were discovered by BBC journalist Nick Southall. Nick has been investigating the extraordinary story of Stanislaw Chrzanowski for over 5 years, trying to establish if this man, who settled here to help Britain rebuild after the war, had also helped the Nazis kill tens of thousands of Jews in his homeland of Belarus. Told using the archive of secret recordings found in John’s attic, and hearing from eyewitnesses who knew Stan Chrzanowski as ‘a butcher’, this often chilling story takes us from Birmingham, to Berlin to the Killing Fields of Belarus. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day. Failure to Complete the Conquest 27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely. 29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them. 30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor. 31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32 so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out. 33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them. 34 The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35 The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward. Israel’s Disobedience 2 Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, 2 and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done? 3 So now I say, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.” 4 As soon as the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. 5 And they called the name of that place Bochim.2 And they sacrificed there to the LORD. The Death of Joshua 6 When Joshua dismissed the people, the people of Israel went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land. 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the LORD had done for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110 years. 9 And they buried him within the boundaries of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. 10 And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel. Israel’s Unfaithfulness 11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. 12 And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger. 13 They abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 14 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had warned, and as the LORD had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress. The Lord Raises Up Judges 16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the LORD, and they did not do so. 18 Whenever the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. 19 But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he said, “Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their fathers and have not obeyed my voice, 21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the LORD as their fathers did, or not.” 23 So the LORD left those nations, not driving them out quickly, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua. You shall have one statute, both for the sojourner and for the native.” The Cloud Covering the Tabernacle 15 On the day that the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony. And at evening it was over the tabernacle like the appearance of fire until morning. 16 So it was always: the cloud covered it by day3 and the appearance of fire by night. 17 And whenever the cloud lifted from over the tent, after that the people of Israel set out, and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the people of Israel camped. 18 At the command of the LORD the people of Israel set out, and at the command of the LORD they camped. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19 Even when the cloud continued over the tabernacle many days, the people of Israel kept the charge of the LORD and did not set out. 20 Sometimes the cloud was a few days over the tabernacle, and according to the command of the LORD they remained in camp; then according to the command of the LORD they set out. 21 And sometimes the cloud remained from evening until morning. John Commerford grew up in Pennsville, NJ. with Anthony Matarerse Jr. and they consider themselves best friends.  John hunted and shot at M&M in his earlier days and worked side jobs to be able put extra cash in his pocket so that he could travel to tournaments. For the south side the hangings of the court were of fine twined linen, a hundred cubits; 10 their twenty pillars and their twenty bases were of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. 11 And for the north side there were hangings of a hundred cubits; their twenty pillars and their twenty bases were of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. 12 And for the west side were hangings of fifty cubits, their ten pillars, and their ten bases; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. 13 And for the front to the east, fifty cubits. 14 The hangings for one side of the gate were fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and three bases. 15 And so for the other side. Materials for the Tabernacle 21 These are the records of the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the testimony, as they were recorded at the commandment of Moses, the responsibility of the Levites under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 22 Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses; 23 and with him was Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and designer and embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. 24 All the gold that was used for the work, in all the construction of the sanctuary, the gold from the offering, was twenty-nine talents and 730 shekels,5 by the shekel of the sanctuary. 25 The silver from those of the congregation who were recorded was a hundred talents and 1,775 shekels, by the shekel of the sanctuary: 26 a beka6 a head (that is, half a shekel, by the shekel of the sanctuary), for everyone who was listed in the records, from twenty years old and upward, for 603,550 men. 27 The hundred talents of silver were for casting the bases of the sanctuary and the bases of the veil; a hundred bases for the hundred talents, a talent a base. 28 And of the 1,775 shekels he made hooks for the pillars and overlaid their capitals and made fillets for them. 29 The bronze that was offered was seventy talents and 2,400 shekels; 30 with it he made the bases for the entrance of the tent of meeting, the bronze altar and the bronze grating for it and all the utensils of the altar, 31 the bases around the court, and the bases of the gate of the court, all the pegs of the tabernacle, and all the pegs around the court. When filmmaker Ryan White first heard about the murder of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in early 2017, he paid little attention to the story until a reporter called to let him know that it might make an interesting documentary. Kim Jong-nam was poisoned in the middle of a crowded Malaysian airport by two young women who smeared a highly poisonous nerve agent on his face. On the surface, these women seemed like bold, cold-blooded killers. But once Ryan and cinematographer John Benam flew to Malaysia to find out more about the story, they soon realized that the political assassination plot went deep, the women might be innocent, and were likely duped by North Korean operatives. The two women, Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong, were put on trial for murder in Malaysia. Ryan was able to speak with their lawyers and eventually interview Siti and Doan. With help from the women's defense lawyers, the Assassins editorial team painstakingly pieced together all the security footage from the airport and put together the entire sequence of events during the assassination. They were also able to see and use within the film many of the text messages the women exchanged with their handlers, which clearly pointed to their complete ignorance of what they were getting into. Ryan feels Assassins became controversial and had trouble finding distribution not because of the political content, but because big online companies feared retribution, as occurred with Sony Pictures getting hacked by North Korea when they released the film The Interview. Cinematographer John Benam has worked on several documentaries with director Ryan White, beginning with the the Netflix series The Keepers, about the murder of a nun and the cover-up of sexual abuse in the Baltimore Catholic Church. When John first decided to make a career out of filmmaking, he knew he wanted to stay in Baltimore, and started working in a camera shop during the switch from film to video. Luckily, Baltimore has a bit of a film industry and he was able to work locally on several TV shows, then got a job working for National Geographic shooting nature documentaries. For Assassins, John and Ryan dove deep into Siti and Doan's story, exploring where they came from and what brought them to Malaysia. They felt it was important to have the women tell their own story, and it required patience and sensitivity. John is a mission-oriented, emotional cinematographer, and shooting nature documentaries taught him the skill to sit still, keep a low profile, and watch a story unfold. John had to travel light and nimble, taking dozens of trips to Malaysia for the story over the course of two years while the trial was going on. He used two Canon EOS C300 Mark II cameras for shooting, because of its lightness and small size, staying under the radar from the general public. As he learned about the intricacies of the Malaysian legal system and shot the trial, John felt very emotional about the outcome of a guilty verdict for the women, which would mean execution by hanging.
