Pakistani Christians could face renewed persecution following the Archbishop of Canterbury's decision to withdraw an honour to a leading Muslim cleric, Monsignor Michael Nazir-Ali warns today in this episode of Holy Smoke.The former Bishop of Rochester speaks to Damian Thompson following the news that Lambeth Palace has had to withdraw an award to Hafiz Ashrafi after previous comments by the Imam came to light. Following the ‘Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation' award being presented, it came to light that Ashrafi had praised Osama bin Laden in 2007, saying he would give the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks the title Saifullah – or 'Sword of God' – for 'serving Muslims by waging jihad against infidels'. The question remains ‘why there was not due diligence' Msgr Nazir-Ali tells Damian, saying Pakistani Christian leaders fear a backlash. The ‘reactionary action on the part of extremists' should have been thought about before making the announcement, Nazir-Ali said, as he criticised Lambeth Palace. Msgr Nazir-Ali, now a priest of the Catholic Ordinariate and who was born in Pakistan, is a world renowned authority on Islam's relations with Christianity. Not every difficult thing in your life is the devil. Not every hardship is your cross to bear. And not every obstacle requires the same response. Continuing the Tent Talk conversation on the good and handsome warfare, Nancy McCready challenges maturing sons to develop the discernment necessary to recognize what they are actually facing. Drawing from DeVern Fromke's Ultimate Intention and Scripture, Nancy identifies critical distinctions between the Father's discipline, reaping what we have sown, genuine spiritual oppression, hindrances to obedience, the fellowship of Christ's sufferings, and self-made crosses. Maturity does not automatically blame darkness. Maturity discerns. If it is the Father's discipline, receive it. If it is a harvest from what you have sown, repent and change what you are sowing. If it is oppression, submit to the Father and resist the enemy. If it is a hindrance, discern His direction and continue in obedience. If it is your cross, take it up freely and follow Christ. And if it is a self-made cross, put it down. This episode is an invitation to stop boxing the air, refuse spiritual ignorance, and allow the Father to train you as a sharp, skilled, mature son who knows the difference—and knows how to respond. Actions have consequences, as we all know. The world is going to be judged one day, and the scene will not be pretty. For Christians, the suffering and destruction won't be an issue, because we won't be here, but it's our responsibility to make those around us aware of what's ahead of them is they don't get right with God. Our scripture text today is Jude, verses twelve through fifteen.

What can psychotherapy teach us about truth, human nature, and our relationship with God? In this episode of The Kubik Report, I talk with therapist Justin Kovanis about the fascinating intersection between Christian faith and secular psychotherapy. Their conversation explores how the process of understanding the human mind can uncover truths about ourselves—and provide valuable “raw material” for spiritual growth and transformation. Justin explains the distinction between explicitly practicing “Christian counseling” and being a Christian who works faithfully and ethically as a therapist. Rather than imposing religious values on clients, the Christian therapist can bring compassion, respect, careful listening, and a deep concern for the individual into the therapeutic relationship. The discussion examines four universal human concerns frequently encountered in psychotherapy: death, loneliness, freedom, and meaning. These struggles are hardly foreign to Scripture. David's Psalms reveal periods of fear, despair, and emotional turmoil, while Jeremiah openly expresses grief and anguish. Their experiences challenge the idea that strong faith somehow makes Christians immune to psychological distress. We also discuss healthy versus destructive shame, the importance of humility, and therapy as a process of “truth discovery”—helping people understand themselves without condemnation while accepting responsibility for change. Drawing on ideas from C.S. Lewis, Scripture, and clinical experience, this thoughtful conversation asks an important question: Can greater psychological self-understanding help prepare us for deeper spiritual transformation? Everyone has done something so dumb they wish they could erase it from history, but sometimes those failures make the best stories and teach the most memorable lessons. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar look back on some of their most embarrassing mistakes, from mistaken identities and awkward encounters to Ray accidentally taking someone else's car and Oscar putting himself in serious danger while snorkeling. E.Z. recalls an unplanned evangelistic conversation that unexpectedly reached millions online, showing how God can use simple acts of obedience in ways we could never predict. Favoritism in a family can leave lasting wounds, especially when a child feels overlooked, unwanted, or less valued than their siblings. Whether it happens through obvious comparisons or subtle differences in attention, playing favorites can damage relationships and shape how children see themselves for years to come. Scripture offers a clear warning: God does not show favoritism. James 2:1 calls Christians to reject favoritism, reminding us that partiality has no place in a life devoted to Jesus. Parents can be tempted to favor one child because of personality, responsibility, or shared interests, but every child needs to know they are equally loved and valued. For those who have experienced the pain of favoritism, God’s love offers hope and a foundation for healing. And when we recognize that our own favoritism has hurt others, humility, apology, and a commitment to change can help begin the process of restoration. Full Transcript Below: The Importance of Avoiding FavoritismBy Vivian Bricker Bible Reading:“My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism” (James 2:1). Favoritism occurred in my family as my dad’s favorite was the oldest child, and my mom’s favorite was the middle child. As the youngest of three, I was never chosen as the favorite. Instead, I was seen as the “extra” child. As one can imagine, this has caused me to have long-lasting problems, such as a negative self-view and low self-esteem. If you genuinely want to obey God, you must give up the practice of playing favorites. Favoritism only hurts your children and makes them second-guess themselves. Studies have shown that the oldest child tends to be the favorite, often because they are more like their parents or take on more responsibilities than younger siblings. It is time to change these statistics; there needs to be equal love for each child. Within the family of God, there is no room for favoritism. The Apostle Paul tells us, “For God does not show favoritism” (Romans 2:11). Showing favoritism will hurt your other children, either directly or indirectly. Not to mention, it could make the favorite overconfident, selfish, and self-absorbed. There needs to be equality amongst children. If you continue to play favorites, it will push your children away from you. This has been true for me, as there was nothing I could do to get my parents to like me. I have gone through multiple years of therapy to help work through this issue. I have also sought out help from God. Through the help of the Lord, I have discovered that I am loved by Him. The Bible tells us we are God’s children and that we are dearly loved by Him (1 John 3:1). The journey has not been easy, but Jesus has helped me every step of the way. While it is true that I will always have this wound from my parents, I can move on to new beginnings in the Lord. It also helps me share my story with others to help prevent them from showing favoritism toward their own children. Intersecting Faith & Life: James 2:1 says, “My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.” This comes from the half-brother of the Lord. In no way does favoritism bring about the righteous life that God wants for us. It will only bring pain to our own lives and to the lives of others. Reach out to those you may have hurt with favoritism and tell them you want to talk. Apologize to them and ask if there is anything you can do to make things right. Acknowledge that you cannot change the past, but help them to know that you will no longer practice favoritism in the future. An apology and a promise to change for the future can go a long way toward healing someone's heart, whether they are in their childhood, teenage, or adult years. Let’s pray: Dear Jesus, I want to let go of the toxic trait of showing favoritism. I don't want to play favorites anymore, as I see all the pain it causes. Please help me to love everyone equally. Forgive me for my sin, and please help those I have hurt to forgive me. Thank You, Lord. Amen. When you are tempted to show favoritism, what can you do? Marriage is God's good gift, yet Paul advises the unmarried to consider remaining as they are. He and 17 other leaders from Zion Church were arrested and imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party. Following her father's arrest, Grace began publicly advocating for his release and for the release of other Christian leaders detained by the Chinese Communist Party. Every biblical counselor assumes their approach comes straight from Scripture alone, but what if the underlying architecture came from an apologist rather than a counselor? In this third episode of our MarsCast series on biblical counseling, Dr. Jared Poulton joins Jared and Dr. Alan Strange to reveal the hidden intellectual DNA of the biblical counseling movement: how Cornelius Van Til's presuppositional apologetics (covenantal knowledge, the antithesis, the rejection of "brute facts") became the theological scaffolding Jay Adams built his entire system on.But it's not a simple story of inheritance. Dr. Strange raises a pointed challenge about what gets lost when the antithesis is applied to counseling without its necessary counterweight, common grace, right down to what that means for how Christians assess the insights of secular psychology. Our text today is 1 Peter 5:8-9: Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. — 1 Peter 5:8-9 Peter places two realities side by side. God cares for you. The devil wants to devour you. Yesterday, Peter invited us to cast every anxiety on God because He cares for us. Today, he warns us not to confuse God's care with a life free from spiritual resistance: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." Peter neither ignores the devil nor becomes obsessed with him. He simply tells us the truth: we have a real spiritual enemy, so we need to remain awake. To be sober-minded means thinking clearly. Not allowing fear, distraction, or temptation to cloud our judgment. To be watchful means recognizing that temptation rarely announces itself. The enemy often works through lies we begin to believe, accusations we repeatedly rehearse, desires we excuse, and isolation we accept. Note that Peter calls the devil our adversary. He opposes God and seeks to destroy what God is doing in us. Like a roaring lion, he uses intimidation to pressure us to run. Peter knew what that pressure felt like. Before Jesus was arrested, He warned him: "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." —Luke 22:31-32 Peter was sifted too. Fear exposed him, and he denied Jesus three times. Self-confidence was not enough. Therefore, his instruction is what he lacked. "Resist him, firm in your faith." To resist means to stand against or withstand. We resist the enemy by holding firmly to what God has said. When the adversary whispers that God has abandoned you, remember that the Father cares for you. When the adversary accuses you of forgiven sin, remember the finished work of Christ. When the adversary tempts you with promises of life apart from obedience, remember where those desires lead. Spiritual resistance is not spiritual bravado. It is stubborn allegiance to God. Yesterday, Peter told us to open our hands and release our anxiety. Today, he tells us to plant our feet and resist the enemy. So what's your battle with the adversary today? DO THIS: Identify one lie, temptation, accusation, or pattern of isolation the enemy has been using against you. Write down one biblical truth that directly confronts it, then share the struggle with one trustworthy believer who will pray with you. ASK THIS: Where have I become spiritually careless or distracted? What lie or accusation am I tempted to believe right now? Who is helping me remain firm in the faith rather than fight alone? PRAY THIS: Father, keep me sober-minded and spiritually awake. Help me recognize the enemy's lies without becoming fearful or preoccupied with him. Strengthen me to resist temptation, stand firmly in the truth of the gospel, and remain connected to Your people. Thank You that Jesus intercedes for me and will not let me go. Amen. In passages like Romans 3:27-30 and Galatians 2:15-16, Paul says that we are justified by faith and not the works of the Law. In James 2:14-26, however, James claims that faith without works is dead. What's going on here? I explore how the word ‘faith' itself is a dynamic term which denotes action, including the concepts of faithfulness and obedience, and that Paul and James are both arguing that true faith acts. I then look at the text more carefully, showing that Paul is not arguing against good works in general but against “works of the Law”, claiming that Gentiles are incorporated into Abraham's family without having to adopt Jewish rites and identity markers such as circumcision and dietary laws. James, on the other hand, is arguing that faith that isn't put into practice is dead, a sentiment with which Paul would be in full agreement.
