Maybe it’s just the disillusionment we’ve all felt over the past year, but this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards just didn’t have anything to them. It was virtual, pre-recorded, and pretty boilerplate across the board, and while that did mean there was a significant drop in awfulness and cringe that did come with the catch of just being a pretty forgettable hour that just came and went. There were some good award choices, some bad ones, and some that are just “eh whatever, who cares,” and the same can be said for this awards show as a whole. It wasn’t terrible, but wasn’t great. It was just… eh whatever, who cares. We’ll have a livelier show in a couple of days, so enjoy our belated “post-show” for the fifth annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards. No person has the ability to make you happy. Happiness comes from acquiring the Mind of Christ through the 4 Cs: communicate; capture; comprehend; and comply. The living Word of God, learned and applied, will give you great happiness amid adversity. If you depend on any person or circumstance to make you happy you aren't living the Christian life. Life for some is a frantic search for happiness. Unhappy people take their unhappiness with them wherever they go. The world offers you pseudo-happiness. This neutral H won't encourage or sustain you in adversity. It's temporal, doesn't last. God's Happiness +H is protection against fear and arrogance in your life. “Happiness belongs to the man whom God corrects, so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty” (Job 5:17). God's plan is for you to be happy - not related to people or circumstances - but based on the content of the Word of God in your soul. “I taught you these things in order that My happiness might be in you and your happiness might be complete” (John 15:11). Today I interview Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, the well known televangelists. I can only imagine what you may be thinking about this upcoming interview. What the fuck, Marie? Yup, I’ll grant you that it’s an odd selection, right? I have known Jay for nearly a year. He runs Revolution Church out of Minneapolis which I have attended a handful of times and where I even spoke once. His church has no doctrine, really. It’s a church of doubt attended by Christians, agnostics, and atheists alike. It’s weird. I thought it was weird from the day I learned about it and I still think it’s weird. However, I’m starting to get it. Do I feel driven to go to a church like that? Nope, definitely not. But I get what they’re doing. They’re exploring nuance and exploring repurposing the Bible without fundamentalism. Again, I don’t really get it, but I get it. I appreciate what they’re doing and I see that a lot of folx would like to land in a place like that. And anything that is a step away from fundamentalism is a step in the right direction, in my opinion. But we don’t talk a ton about that in this interview. The premise was to talk about managing anxiety in a COVID19 world. But of course, as I predicted, we found a few rabbit trails. And I’ll let you enjoy finding out what those are.
