In this sermon we discuss a Biblical approach to developing a positive self-image and building our self-esteem. Self-image is how you see yourself, while self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. A positive self-image is important because it directly impacts how you feel about yourself, influences your interactions with others, your ability to pursue and achieve goals, and overall mental and emotional well-being. A positive self-image affects your confidence, resilience, how you build relationships and how you face life's challenges. (1) Be established in your identity in Christ. Repaint your portrait based on your identity in Christ. The Word of God is our spiritual mirror. (2) Constantly acknowledge your identity in Christ. Agree with God and say what God says about who you are in Christ. (3) Focus on your completeness that comes from Christ. Recognize God's empowering through your life in Christ. All that is in Jesus has been made available to us through our life in Christ. (4) Counter and discard negative thoughts. Consciously counter and discard negative thoughts by declaring who you are in Christ. (5) Fellowship with like-minded believers. Chapter 6: Developing a Positive Self-ImageMichael Phelps is one of the most decorated Olympians of all time. In his career, he amassed an incredible twenty-eight medals, with twenty-three of those being gold. He set both all-time Olympic records. Phelps did so over the course of four Olympic games spanning twelve years. Phelps also overcame a lot of self-doubt along the way. When Phelps was younger, he was diagnosed with ADHD and told by his doctor that he would never amount to anything.  Phelps's mom used this as motivation for him to succeed. Phelps's first coach didn't think he was good enough to make the Olympic team. This only made Phelps work harder, and he went on to prove his coach wrong by not only making the team but becoming one of the most decorated Olympians of all time (Valentine, 2019). Phelps said, “You dream. You plan. You reach. There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, with belief, with confidence and trust in yourself and those around you, there are no limits.” All of the best-laid plans and systems will not serve you if you do not believe in your ability to accomplish your goals. Look back at the self-assessment from chapter 3. Do you regularly talk to yourself in a negative manner or a positive one? Everyone struggles with self-image, including Michael Phelps. No one is perfect, and everyone has their own insecurities. Phelps was able to overcome his doubts and achieve great things because he had a positive self-image. He believed in himself and his abilities, even when others did not. If you struggle with self-image, there are things you can do to improve it.

Public image, on the other hand, is related to how one is perceived by the external world and is shaped by one's self-image.    This conversation explores self-image, the mental picture you have of yourself, and includes your strengths, weaknesses, and personal characteristics. This is shaped by your experiences, beliefs, and values. Tonya also explores public image, how other people perceive you, and is shaped by your behaviors, actions, and interactions. Although both are important, without a strong self-image, true happiness, and well-being can't be achieved. When working on your public image, it is important to do it in service of who you are becoming, not just to impress others. Ever wonder what all those diets, exercise programs, things you say when you look in a mirror, or how you “skip out” on certain foods is affecting your daughter?? It's not just society teaching our daughters that they aren't enough…you might be too! Although this is a long episode today, it's an explosive one when it comes to NUGGETS you are going to be thinking about when it comes to your influence on other young minds!! Today I'm joined by my 12 (almost 13) year old who is in the last few months of 7th grade. Her name is Trinity and because she's with me in the studio, and I've gotten her permission, I use her story a lot today because I was also guilty of imposing a lot of behaviors not even realizing what I was doing to my kids. Warriors, please I beg of you, listen to my story and take heed so that you are not left wondering why you have daughters who grow up thinking they have to fit a mold, that they aren't perfect the way they are, that the “all or nothing” mentality or the the “exercise because I ate bad food” idea is okay!!! If you are exercising every day and making your kids be a part of that you might be hurting more than helping. Most often kids are not going to adopt the things that you are imposing on them as habits in their life-and they will adopt YOUR insecurities as their own, YOUR habits of dieting… Let's make sure we are setting a healthy example for our girls starting TODAY! It's never too late!
