Leading by Example with Radical Birth Keeper and Freebirther Jess Owen You can watch this episode HERE Today, Radical Birth Keeper School graduate and sovereign birth attendant, Jess Owens, joins me on the show sharing her two birth stories. Jess started her mothering journey with a seemingly acceptable midwife-attended homebirth in England, and although there were things that left a bad taste in her mouth, she felt lucky to birth at home without complications. After a few international moves, and learning more about physiological birth, she and her family moved to Canada and Jess began attending births outside of the system. Jess became pregnant again, and enrolled in the RBK school, all while building community and a flourishing birthkeeping business, entirely by word of mouth. She goes on to birth her son in total power, as did so many other women from her cohort! Jess offers a beautiful story of trust and the incredible ripple effect that taking birth back into the hands of women creates. Here's what you'll hear in Jess's story: ✨️How during her first pregnancy, she never met her assigned midwife, but instead a different person for every single appointment. ✨️How at 6 months pregnant she decided to have a homebirth, hired a doula, thinking that this was the most holistic plan available to her. ✨️How the medical midwives who showed up at her home were complete strangers she'd never met before. ✨️How she was forced into vaginal exams, pressured and annoyed by the midwives, and how she wanted to just swat them away. ✨️How her views on motherhood and birth begin to shift as she heard the call to work with birthing women outside the system. ✨️How she and her family move back to Canada and she was offered an opportunity to be a backup for a local woman attending sovereign births. ✨️How she attended her first birth outside of the system and then, through word of mouth, women just kept coming, and her community truly called her into this work. ✨️How she continued to attend births while pregnant with her son, and the easy wild pregnancy she experienced. ✨️Her debate between getting an ultrasound or not, and what she resolved to do. ✨️The simple and sweet freebirth story of her son, free of annoyance or external pressure. Felicity is a formerly registered midwife with the National Health Service (NHS), the publicly funded healthcare system in England. She had wanted to be a mother ever since she was a little girl, and midwifery seemed like the most aligned career for her- until she woke up to the reality that she was assisting in the violence and sabotage of mothers and babies in birth by attending them in the hospital. With her first son, Cairo, she went through the conventional medical system—all the tests, ultrasounds, and even put under anesthesia for a C-section. While grateful for the safe arrival of her little boy, Davana couldn't help but feel like the birth was stolen from her: the sacred and ancestral wisdom of birthing embedded in her soul was lost to the trauma she experienced.   When Davana found herself pregnant again in 2020, she decided, this time, she would do everything differently. While she did open herself up to the possibility of going a more conventional route, she landed on no hospital visits, no tests, no ultrasounds, no midwife, and to opt for a free birth instead. Working with her Radical Birth Keeper, Isabella, Davana fully and completely surrendered to her body and the natural process during her prenatal journey.   In 2021, Davana went into labor during the craziest storm that Austin had ever seen in 40 years, locking down the city and further adding to her need to let go of control. Despite her fears that surfaced regarding a stillbirth, her own health and wellbeing, and external circumstances like the weather, Davana put her complete trust in her birth and her body. She welcomed her son, Nature, at home—without water, without electricity, without any medical assistance—and in total bliss.    As you listen, I invite you to think about what you currently believe about birthing your greatest fears even if you don't have children, since as women we are birthing new projects, book babies, businesses- and the fears that arise through the portal of the ‘birth'.  Is reclaiming birth, freebirthing, and surrendering to a natural process something you would be open to, or at least, open-minded about? I am officially a radical birth keeper after attending my first birth last weekend! The experience was incredible... so incredible that I just had to record an episode about it. I am honored to be doing this work and so grateful for the beautiful family I worked with. I'll share a bit about the birth and a lot about what it means to be a radical birth keeper. Enjoy!

Davana's pregnancy with her first son was a wake up call to the consequences of trusting in a system that doesn't serve women. After a traumatizing and unnecessary surgical birth, she found the fire within her to say "never again" and chose the guidance of her inner voice above all. In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we have doula- turned -Radical Birth Keeper, Olivyah Bowens, from Baltimore, Maryland on the show today. Olivyah is a mother of two, a perinatal community health worker, a holistic birth educator, and a graduate of Free Birth Society's Radical Birth Keeper School. After learning about the atrocious maternal mortality rate of Black women in the United States, Olivyah committed herself to understanding why Black women were dying. Olivyah walks us through the intersection of racism and healthcare, and how it directly, and obviously, negatively impacts Black women and their families. Olivyah will also provide historical context of racism in OB/GYN and how that links to institutional racism in health care today. I am grateful to be bringing you the story of a wise woman with quite the story to tell. Shanika is from Jamaica, currently living in Atlanta, Ga, and is both a free birther and a Radical Birth Keeper. She tells us of her first birth at 17 and then the tragic tale of her daughter's death three years later. And yet, in the loss of her daughter, Shanika had a true spiritual awakening, and became the incredible woman she is today. We chat about Emilee's journey to now, her 13 years of doula work and how she got to where she is today with her Radical Birth Keeper School. Bio: Emilee Saldaya is the trail blazing leader and founder of Free Birth Society. She was a doula for over ten years, until the reality of her complicity with the obstetric system and the harms that it does to women and babies prompted her to find a better way. In aligning with freebirth, Emilee's dharmic path became clear. She quickly evolved into a "Radical Birth Keeper" who serves women birthing outside the system. She founded Free Birth Society prior to the conscious conception of her first child, and went on to give birth to her daughter freely, on Maui, Hawaii. Emilee's acclaimed podcast (“The Free Birth Society Podcast”) quickly became a fan favorite and has reached millions of people. Emilee is an inspiring and inspired coach, with the ability to immediately hone in on the self-sabotage and mental blocks that keep women stuck in unproductive patterns.
