Roie McCann is the manager of the stunning and unique Clare Island Lighthouse accommodation so Roie is the perfect guest to give us an insider's guide to the magical Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Ireland. This is a part of the country I know very well and love so this is a great chat all about this beautiful part of Ireland.Clare Island stands guard at the entrance to Clew Bay, off Ireland's western Atlantic coast along the Wild Atlantic Way. For almost two centuries, the island's Lighthouse has been a nautical landmark perched high on the craggy cliffs, watching over Achill, Westport and beyond. Once a safe haven for sailors, this heritage property now offers a sanctuary of a different kind. This architecturally majestic, listed building has been lovingly transformed into fully catered, luxury accommodation, complemented by magnificent sea views and an inspiring, natural environment. For more information on the Clare Island Lighthouse check out https://www.clareislandlighthouse.comI love the Blue Book because they are generally family owned and run Irish Country House Hotels, Manor Houses, castles and restaurants. You really get to see Irish hospitality at its best and the properties are generally old country houses, so you get a real sense of the history of the area you are staying in. A Blue Book voucher would always be my top travel gift recommendation and their website is https://www.irelands-blue-book.ie.If you haven't already, I'd ask you to give me a follow on whichever platform you listen to your podcasts and you will be the first to get a new episode. Clare Island is at the entrance to Clew Bay, off Ireland's western Atlantic coast. It's the largest of Clew Bay's 365 islands, only six of which are inhabited year-round. It rises to a height of 1520 feet and is an important breeding ground for seabirds. The family of the legendary pirate queen Grace O'Malley owned the island during the Middle Ages, and many of the O'Malley clan are buried at an abbey on the south side of the island. Clare Island Light Station, Ireland. Photos courtesy of Sherry FitzGerald Limited The island's original lighthouse was built in 1806, but it was damaged by fire seven years later due to the careless disposal of candle wicks by the keeper. A new lighthouse was built in 1818, serving until it was decommissioned in 1965. A German pathologist, Goesta Fischer, bought the property in 2008 in partnership with Roie McCann, an interior designer. After five years of renovation, Clare Island Lighthouse was opened in 2013 as a luxury boutique hotel. It won an award as Europe's Best Coastal Boutique Hotel in 2016. The property is now for sale. Before the sexual revolution. Before the Witch’s Guide to Self Care. There was Rosaleen Norton, a self-proclaimed witch. An artist and occultist who pushed Australia’s Christian conservatives to the point of exhaustion with her Pantheistic rituals and dark art. They tried to burn this witch, but nothing could keep Roie from her sex magick and devotion to Pan. Meet the Witch of Kings of Cross and her “Coven From Down Under.”

Throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Rosaleen Norton was Sydney’s own real live witch. An eccentric in the extreme, these days her antics would be treated for what they were, a bit of harmless fun. But, back in those archaic times the authorities chose to look upon Roie, as she preferred to be called, as the Devil’s apprentice and treated her accordingly to the point where she wound up in court for the most ridiculous offences that today would be laughable.

Born in the early hours of a thunderstorm, with pointed ears and 'witches' marks' on her skin, little Rosaleen was destined for a life of the occult. From her earliest childhood, Roie was drawn to the dark, and her drawings and stories about ghouls, monsters and grotesque horrors set her apart from her peers. As a young woman, she immersed herself in Theosophy, Western Esoterism, dedicated herself to the pagan god, Pan, and pursued a life of art. Come with us to the dingy streets of mid-century Sydney, where Rosaleen's occult paintings and pagan ways made her infamous as the Witch of King's Cross. If you want to support Deviant Women, follow us on: PatreonTwitter @DeviantWomenFacebook @deviantwomenpodcastInstagram @deviantwomenpodcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
