//The Wire//2300Z December 31, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: TEPID RELATIONS CONTINUE BETWEEN RUSSIA AND AZERBAIJAN FOLLOWING SHOOTDOWN INCIDENT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Global: Solar weather is expected to peak overnight as a Geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect for Dec 31 into Jan 1. AC: Over the next day, GPS and radio signals may be degraded if a substantial geomagnetic storm materializes.Russia: President Vladimir Putin allegedly expressed condolences for Russia's involvement in the downing of Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 in a private call with Azerbaijan's President.-HomeFront-USA: Facebook/META and Instagram have announced plans to introduce AI-generated “users” to their platforms, drawing the ire of the users still using these social media platforms. AC: While seemingly a minor development in the world of social media, it's already hard enough to discern the truth on the internet, much less when the developers of platforms themselves push AI-generated content on their platforms.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As the transcript of the phone call between Russia and Azerbaijan has not yet been released, only secondary sources of unknown veracity have commented on the contents of the call. Allegedly Putin apologized for the incident, but did not directly take responsibility for the shootdown. In any case, the leadership of both nations are treating this incident as a tragic accident for the moment, although tensions among Azeris are high following the incident. For instance, Azeri President Aliyev accused Putin of attempting to downplay the incident. Regarding the exact cause of the crisis, Russia has not directly and clearly admitted to shooting down the aircraft, however Putin has mentioned that Russian Air Defense Artillery (ADA) units were engaging Ukrainian drones at the time of the incident. This highly coincidental statement might be the best Azerbaijan can get at the moment in terms of an admission of guilt from Russia. Putin's indirect apology is also very likely due to what are likely to be perceived as Azerbaijan's unreasonable demands. President Aliyev has demanded three things: An apology from Russia (which they already have), An admission of guilt by Russia, and criminal trial of the Russian soldiers responsible. This latter point is absolutely not going to happen, and probably isn't expected to either because Azerbaijan's further demand is that of money…compensation for the accident in the form of a check made out to the Azeri government. Putin is not the man to engage in a shakedown operation with, so relations between Azerbaijan and Russia might be rather lukewarm for some time.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Russia on Monday for a three-day visit in which he will meet with Russia President Vladimir Putin. Iran and Saudi Arabia announced last Friday a Chinese-brokered deal to restore relations. After decades of enmity and a formal cutting of ties in 2016, the rapprochement has been touted as a momentous development in the region. But how it ultimately impacts the Middle East remains a very open question, as the long adversarial powers are fighting a proxy war in Yemen and continue to support opposing sides across the region. Amid perceived U.S. retrenchment from the Middle East, the deal is a diplomatic win for China as it increasingly seeks to present an alternative vision to the U.S.-led global order. Minnesota regulators knew four months ago that radioactive waste had leaked from a nuclear power plant in Monticello — but they didn't announce anything about the leak until this week. Russia President Vladimir Putin has sought to validate the invasion of Ukraine at a speech during the Victory Parade at the Red Square in Moscow. Moscow correspondent Stuart Smith spoke to Susie Ferguson.

*) Zelenskyy to address UNSC Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the UN Security Council for the first time at a meeting that is certain to focus on what appear to be deliberate killings allegedly by the Russian forces in the town of Bucha on the outskirts of the capital Kiev. The United Kingdom holds the council presidency this month and announced that the Ukrainian leader will speak at the open meeting. *) Biden calls for war crimes trial against Putin US President Joe Biden has called for war crimes trial against Russia President Vladimir Putin and said he will seek more sanctions after reported atrocities in Ukraine. “You saw what happened in Bucha,” Biden said. The panel says there must be drastic and immediate cuts in carbon dioxide emissions within three years. It's called for drastic cuts to fossil fuel use and meat consumption. The report also said planting and maintaining forests will help curb the crisis. The bad news is that even by following the plan, temperatures are still expected to rise by 3.2 degrees celsius this century, more than double the target set in the Paris Climate Agreement. *) Dozens still missing in Nigeria The Nigerian Railway Corporation says it still can't account for 168 people who are missing after an attack on a train that killed eight people and wounded several others last week. President Joe Biden messed up again on Tuesday night during his State of the Union speech, referring to Ukrainians as Iranians while discussing the ongoing turmoil in Europe as Russia continues its invasion into Ukraine. "Putin may circle Kyiv with tanks, but he'll never gain the hearts and souls of the Iranian people," Biden said. The President also missed out on some opportunities where instead of just saying "He stands with the Ukraine people ", instead he should have offered real solutions and should have gave Russia President Vladimir Putin some Ultimatums. I firmly believe we wouldn't even have this issue happening with the Russia invading of Ukraine under Former President Donald Trump. I also discuss what the "State Of The Union" actually means. In essense, A State Of The Union speech should be a list of your accomplishments and real results you have done since taking Office. It shouldn't be falsehoods and lies and talking points about the previous administration. Email: realnewsocala@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lee-leffingwell/support

As a second property giant fails to pay debt interest investors fear a property collapse in China's real estate bubble. On Monday, a Chinese developer of luxury apartments Fantasia missed a $315 million payments to lenders, sparking fears that financial strains in the country's overheated property sector are spreading beyond the troubled Evergrande's troubles. The FT reports that Beijing's crackdown on borrowing by property developers threatens to end China's love affair with London property. The latest Chinese debt-ridden property company is Fantasia Holdings, a Shenzhen-based developer which missed repaying $206 million worth of bonds that matured Monday. In a statement to the HK stock exchange, the company said it is assessing "the potential impact on the financial condition and cash position of the group,". Trading in shares, down by 80% this year, were suspended. The property management unit of Country Garden, China's second largest developer by sales after Evergrande, reported that Fantasia had failed to repay a company loan of about 700 million yuan ($109 million). President Joe Biden’s domestic agenda is stalled in Washington, D.C. while he is overseas for his first trip abroad to talk with world leaders. Biden is set to meet with Russia President Vladimir Putin next week and says he won’t hold back and the U.S. will “respond in a robust and meaningful way if the Russian government engages in harmful activities.” David Axelrod is a former senior adviser to President Obama and has been on similar trips. He tells AC360 the President feels “quite confident” on the global stage and this is “comfortable terrain” for him. Plus, a growing number of Democrats are urging Biden and the Democratic leadership to act without their Republican colleagues to get legislation passed in Congress as bipartisan negotiations around infrastructure and gun reform seem to have crumbled. Democratic Sen. Ed Markey joins AC360 to discuss whether he thinks bipartisanship is a realistic goal to getting Biden’s agenda passed. Airdate: June 9, 2021 Guests: David Axelrod Sen.
