Today on Filmmaking Conversations, I speak to film producer Sarah Potter. When the Lotus Blooms: a story of acute survival is a powerful documentary project that has been left to Naperville resident Sarah Potter after her filmmaker husband, Scott, passed away unexpectedly in July 2020. A routine endoscopy had triggered severe pancreatitis for Scott, and after months of treatments and stays in the hospital, he died from complications associated with his condition. This project has become Sarah's salvation in a time that could have been very difficult. She had been initially hesitant to become a part of the project, yet when her husband's mentor reached out to her, she had an idea; the film was to focus on bringing awareness to Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) and explore the parallels of finding purpose and personal loss.Through the support of her family, friends, and community, Sarah has been able to take this project and run with it - providing her with a new passion and helping to support her two children, aged 7 and 3. Scott's compassion and dedication to the children suffering from AFM has been the film's driving force, and Sarah is sure that her late husband would be proud of her mission.W: https://afmfilm.com/the-teamAlso, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: https://www.kweli.tv/programs/the-people-of-brixtonDamien Swaby Social Media Links:Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/filmmaker_damien_swaby/Twitterhttps://twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorWebsitehttp://filmmakingconversations.com/If you enjoy listening to Filmmaking Conversations with Damien Swaby, I would love a coffee. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 173 Honoring a Husband's Legacy by Finishing His Work on a Documentary About Rare Disease Acute Flaccid Myelitis and Her Own Grief Along the Way with Sarah Potter Sarah Potter's husband Scott got sick and passed away while he was in the middle of creating a documentary about a rare disease called Acute Flaccid Myelitis and the families affected by it. Sarah has immersed herself into film making to finish Scott's documentary, all while working through her grief. The film is called When The Lotus Blooms and it will be released in Fall 2023. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you tell us about your rare disease and grief journey? My husband was working on a film about a rare disease called Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), sharing the stories of affected families not having answers about the cause or treatment. We experienced something similar when my husband had a medical event and was hospitalized for several months before we lost him in July 2020. Because he was so passionate, I knew the story had to continue to be told. It's been a wonderful way for me to honor his legacy and do the good in the rare disease community that he set out to do.  What is your husband's connection to the AFM community? He was active in our local live storytelling community where there were monthly storytelling events and that's where he met a professor with an expertise in epidemiology. When she learned my husband was a filmmaker, she approached him with a story of a mom in her network who had a little boy with AFM and she asked for his thoughts on how to create a film to make an impact and create change around the disease. He was hooked and worked for the better part of a year to gain funding and do research before the filming began. How does your grief align with families in the rare disease community? There are a lot of parallels and I have the ability to connect with them, understanding what it's like to be going along with your day-to-day and suddenly something changes in a split second that your world is different.  What advice do you have for families who want to make a film? If you have a desire to tell your story, think about your takeaway, audience, how you want them to feel and what you want them to do. Everyone in the rare disease community has two elements of a wonderful story-- something unique and something inspiring. If you have an engaged patient advocacy community, I would recommend crowdfunding to fund the film production. Hey there, it's Sarah Potter host of Social Media Therapy. I have some big news coming your way…I'm shutting down this podcast. But, don't you worry because this content isn't going away forever, it's just moving. Some of these episodes will be grandfathered into my new podcast, Dopamine Deficient. What does that mean? Firstly, dopamine is feel-good neurotransmitter. And for those of us who're dopamine deficient, it means our dopamine receptors are too few, or they might not be receiving the proper levels of dopamine. So, why am I getting rid of this podcast and starting a new one? Well, I initially started this podcast with a co-host and we were talking about social media and focused on validating social media manager emotions–that original messaging has changed A LOT. Since establishing Social Media Therapy my entire life has flipped upside down and changed a lot. In good ways and challenging ways. Through this change I've met and connected with so many people struggling with their own mental illness and dopamine deficiencies. One thing everyone seems to struggle with is understanding their mental health and how to live a life unmasked.  Living a happy life with a dopamine deficiency is challenging but not impossible. So on Dopamine Deficient you'll hear what mental illnesses and disorders are affected by dopamine deficiency, learn how to change the way we think about our own mental health, create an arsenal of tools to help you cope, and  break down the stigmas surrounding mental illness. Search for “Dopamine Deficient” on iTunes and Spotify now and subscribe today. Cheers to change and changing the world.

Helping you reduce the overwhelm by encouraging you to take tiny steps to build confidence so you can show up fully in your life and business without fear of being judged.   She shares how the transition from working for some else, talking their language, and their brand to working for yourself and being able to speak from the heart, but not knowing how to go about it. She laughs at the time when she started her business Instagram account… she didn't tell anyone about it.   Sarah is passionate about sharing her learnings about knowing what to share with your audience… only share what you're comfortable sharing - a great place to start is talk about what you really love, what you easily talk about and build on that, a tiny nudge of feeling comfortable in this place, before you know it you're miles away from where you started. One great tip was don't not do something for the fear of taking imperfect action. If you can impact one person, then it's a positive. Another good tip is not to feel like you must explain why you didn't show up on socials this week - it's your business. Don't worry about the people who don't understand, they're not your people. So many good tips!   Hear also about what else contributes to her “sweet life”.   Let listening to this podcast be your permission to take imperfect action and be yourself.

Veronica has lead and developed both the Mentorship Department and Firecracker Artists Way Program with such heart. Together they create things like helpful content, virtual events with experienced Mentors, meet and greets, panel events, one-on-one mentoring opportunities AND more! We've had mentorship workshops that have focused on writers, directors, indie producers, and they have some more cooking in the near future. I am living with bipolar. It's the lovable sludge monster living on my shoulder every day and as I'm getting to know it, it blooms into something new. My experience, as well as the four women interviewed throughout this episode, is personal and different from others. Personal bipolar experiences are not shared anywhere outside of private conversations–making bipolar a taboo topic and a sensitive one to discuss. So, just like we're publicly talking about periods now (and the real truth about them), we are going to talk about bipolar.  Take care while listening to this episode as sensitive topics such as suicidal ideation, medication, and we will mention frequently triggering content throughout the episode.  Leave a five star review if this episode helped you and follow along on TikTok and Instagram (@sarahalpotter).  And, if you have some feedback find us at socialmediatherapypodcast@gmail.com . Where will your business be in a year from now? When I met my client Sarah and started working with her a year ago, we both knew what was possible - and let me tell you how fun it's been to see the difference a year can make! Sarah sat down with me to celebrate and chat about her transformative year (don't worry, we didn't leave out the bad!) and how she came to be fully booked, create offers she loves, get through a "dry" season with clients walking, make mindset shifts that changed the game for her, and her next steps now that she's fully booked with a waitlist!  Bringing my clients on my podcast is one of my favorite things to do because I always want you to be a fly on the wall for our conversations, and I know you'll see yourself in her story. I am seriously so proud of her, and I can't wait to have you hear all about this military mama of 3 with a dream for a flexible lifestyle come true. Thank you to Sarah Potter for chatting with me! As a professional color magick practitioner, Sarah has found ways that we can improve our lives through the use of color. Whether it's a full blown ritual, the foods we eat, or even the outfits we wear, the colors we choose can tell us a lot about what we are experiencing and where we need to find balance. Luckily, she throws us goths a bone, and explains ways in which we can include color into our clothing and lives without ditching the all black wardrobe.
