Total Transparency: How Much Revenue a $100K REALLY Film Generates with Liz ManashilHave you ever wondered how much revenue a real indie film can make in the marketplace? Wouldn't you like to see the real and raw numbers for a nontheatrical film with no major film festival premieres? Today's guest has been brave enough to do just that. Filmmaker Liz Manashil decided to open up the accounting books on her debut feature film Bread and Butter, starring SNL's Bobby Moynihan and Lauren Lapkus. Liz Manashil earned her B.A. in Film and Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, and her M.F.A. from USC's School of Cinematic Arts. Post graduation, Liz spent several years as a film critic for the PBS/Hulu series JUST SEEN IT (which she also helped produce and direct). Overlapping this, Liz worked with distribution guru Peter Broderick. Her debut feature, Bread and Butter, was called “an absolute must-watch for women everywhere” by HelloGiggles. It was released by The Orchard and can be seen on VOD nearly everywhere (including Hulu!). Liz is currently in pre-production on her next feature film, SPEED OF LIFE, and lives in Los Angeles with her dog, Laura Palmer, and her partner, Sean Wright. She is the Manager of Sundance Institute's Creative Distribution Initiative. Here's the breakdown (taken from her amazing article on Moviemaker Magazine:Our film, Bread and Butter, is a digital success. A digital success you've never heard of.Let's break it down. Our film cost $100,000 to makeWe grossed $96,000 a little bit more than a year into our release (and we're still making deals)Our distributor did have a marketing spend but we invested in no other resources outside of that (other than me running our social media campaigns and newsletter)We got two airline deals, two SVOD deals, and decent promotion of transactional and cable VODWe're operating in the black with the distributor's marketing spend and heading toward eventual recoupment in terms of our expensesIn an age where people debate the utility of making independent feature films, there is hope.I had a ball speaking to Liz and we get into the weeds on traditional distribution and self-distribution. If you want to sell you film in the marketplace perk up your ears and take some notes. Enjoy my conversation with Liz Manashil.

“We think sometimes that poverty is only the hungry, naked, and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved, and uncared is for the greatest poverty. We must start in our homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” — Mother TeresaWhen we walk outside, we see homeless people sleeping on the streets – finding shelters in parks, benches, or even under the bridges feeling unwanted, unloved, and uncared. While picturing them out in your head, could you imagine the emotional trauma they are experiencing? Ep.K337: Not using a password manager? Here's why you should be…   In a competitive field, passwords are one of the worst things about the Internet. Long and complex passwords are more secure but difficult to remember, leaving many people using weak and easy-to-guess credentials. One study by the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) revealed how millions are using their pet's name, football team names, “password” and “123456” to access online services. But this leaves you wide open to attack: cybercriminals can crack weak passwords in seconds using automated tools. “A hacker needs roughly two seconds to crack an 11-character password made up of numbers,” says Alex Balan, director of security research at security company Bitdefender. If the password is more complex, containing numbers, symbols and uppercase and lowercase letters, the time needed to break it jumps to 400 years. Experts say a good password should be unique and contain a combination of letters, numbers and special characters. The key to a strong one is length, says independent security researcher Sean Wright. “While password complexity does help, the length matters far more.” Experts recommend a minimum of 11 characters, more if possible. The typical internet user has about 100 sets of login details — memorizing this number of complex passwords is well beyond most people's powers of recall. 典型的網際網路用戶有大約100組登錄詳細資訊 - 記住這麼多複雜的密碼遠遠超出了大多數人的回憶能力。 Password manager apps can resolve this problem by creating long and complex credentials for you, and remembering them the next time you log in. Yet only about one in five people in the UK use one, according to recent estimates. 密碼管理員應用程式可以通過為你建立冗長而複雜的密碼,並在下次登錄時記住它們來解決此問題。然而,根據最近的估計,英國只有大約五分之一的人使用一種。 Many people are put off by the hassle, while others are suspicious about allowing one company to store all of their passwords. How do you know which one is trustworthy, and what if the company is hacked? 許多人被麻煩勸退了,而另一些人則對允許一家公司存儲所有密碼持懷疑態度。你如何知道哪一個是值得信賴的,如果公司被駭客入侵怎麼辦? It might seem daunting at first, but a password manager, such as 1Password, LastPass, Bitwarden or Dashlane, will make your life a lot easier. 乍一看似乎令人畏懼,但是密碼管理器(例如1Password,LastPass,Bitwarden或Dashlane)將使你的生活更加輕鬆。 If this all seems too technical, or you are managing passwords for an elderly parent or grandparent, there is another option. While they're sometimes mocked, physical password books aren't a bad idea, as long as you follow the guidelines in creating strong, unique logins, and the book is kept somewhere secure and doesn't leave the house. 如果這一切看起來都太技術性,或者您正在管理年邁的父母或祖父母的密碼,那麼還有另一種選擇。雖然它們有時會被嘲笑,但實體密碼簿並不是一個壞主意,只要你遵循建立強大,獨特的登錄的準則,並且該書保存在安全的地方並且不會離開家。Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2022/03/22/2003775199

He ransomware, she ransomware, they all ransomware! Yup, you guessed it: this week's episode is all about ransomware. We start with Garmin's interesting handling of their recent tryst with WastedLocker, which largely involved them saying nothing at all to anyone. Then we move on to Blackbaud, who took the opposite stance by telling everyone everything and promising that absolutely on no account has the breached data gone any further than the cybercriminals responsible. Because criminals are renowned for their honesty, right? Staying on the ransomware theme, we wonder whether Garmin could – or should – have learned lessons from Travelex's new year nightmare and Norsk Hydro's run in with LockerGoga in 2019. We also take a look at app sec with Sean Wright, Mr App Sec himself at Immersive Labs and our guest for this week. Sherlock Holmes: Trifles

“cuisine is a little limited” [NAVA]   We find a smattering of food references throughout the Sherlock Holmes stories. But which can be considered consummate British dishes?   We don't come across toad in the hole, bubble and squeak, or cock-a-leekie soup, but there are other meals that are considered British. Connie won for Wild Girls, Wild Nights: True Lesbian Sex Stories. The Lamba Literary review is here. The interview is very pleasant, but it does mention Marion Zimmer Bradley. In the interim between recording the interview and today, there has been a lot of online discussion of Bradley and her role in enabling abuse and abusing children herself. This is a very fraught emotional topic for many people in the SF, SCA, and QUILTBAG communities because many people looked at her as a role model and influence, and loved her books and/or or made their first sales to her. Here are some links collecting responses to the whole thing. Please note that the materials about MZB and her ex-husband, Walter Breen, are extremely disturbing. Proceed with caution, especially if rape and abuse are trigger topics for you.*Rape, Abuse, and Marion Zimmer Bradley is a links roundup and response by Jim C. Hines, who is a rape crisis counselor. *Silence Is Complicity is another links roundup and response by Natalie Luhrs, who has been actively calling out bad things in the SF community for quite some time. *On Doing a Thing I Had to Do is a post by Janni Lee Simner, an author who made her fist sale to MZB, and who has decided to donate her proceeds to RAINN. *Rachel Manija Brown's post is a personal response from someone who has been abused about the importance of making this visible. *Regarding the Marion Zimmer Bradley Abuse Story is Deborah's personal response, apologizing for an earlier tweet. While I do think it's important to acknowledge all of this, the podcast episode itself is only a tiny bit about MZB, and mostly about The Lambda Awards, and other awards and projects. This week the guys are joined by Just Seen It’s Liz Manashil and Sean Wright to discuss the Ridley Scott film, The Counselor. Liz also fills the guys in the progress of her movie, Bread and Butter (which also features Sean!). Additionally, all of the regular segments are present as well, including “Know Everybody”, “Out Now Quickies”, “Movie Call Back”, “Out Now Feedback”, and Trailer Talk (Non-Stop and Need For Speed). It may begin with an awkward catfish conversation, but it certainly shows that everything is connected, as things carry forward.

This last episode of The Writer and the Critic for 2012 sees your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, sink their teeth into non-fiction. But first they give a friendly shout-out to the brand spanking new podcast from Sean Wright, Adventures of a Bookonaut -- to which you should all go and listen right now -- as well as the entertainingly erudite Ambling Along the Acqueduct blog. (Kirstyn's brand spanking new novel, Perfections, might also garner a wee mention.) The duo then become embroiled in a debate about critics and authors and whether one person can or even should wear both hats, as well as whether or not critics need to take the feelings of authors into consideration -- regardless of what kind of spiffy headwear either of them might be donning at the time. The books up for discussion this month are Evaporating Genres, a collection of essays by Gary K. Wolfe (beginning 35:20), and James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon, a biography by Julie Phillips (1:03:50). This thoughtful essay by Jonathan McCalmont is mentioned and, in the spirit of Alice Sheldon, Ian promises to begin writing Letters of Appreciation to authors whose work he has enjoyed. We will follow him up on this next year! There are no real spoilers here but if you have skipped ahead, then please tune back in at 1:39:50 for some closing remarks and (belated) holiday well-wishes. And now for the sad news ... The Writer and the Critic is on hiatus for a couple of months and won't be back until March 2013. The good news is that will give you plenty of time to read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Hopefully it will give Kirstyn and Ian plenty of time as well! Thanks to everyone who listened to The Writer and the Critic during 2012. Ian and Kirstyn love you all to bits and look forward to talking at you a whole lot more in 2013!

This month brings the first fresh recording of The Writer and the Critic since the massive  pre-record-a-thon back in June. Yours hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, welcome themselves back into the slightly rusty saddle with a brief catch-up on what they did during their break ... which seems to have been a whole bunch of extracurricular reading and podcasting! Kirstyn confesses to the reading slump in which she currently finds herself bemired, while managing to provide a a handle of capsule reviews along the way. Ian discusses his short story ennui as well as taking the opportunity to plug episodes of Last Short Story and the Martian Drive-In Podcast in which he appeared. Podcast floozy, thy name is Mond. The books tabled for dissection this month are Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth (beginning around 21:40) and Osama by Lavie Tidhar (at 1:06:10). There are many, many spoilers, including detailed discussions of both endings. Be warned! For supplemental listening, Ian and Kirstyn both highly recommend this episode of Galactic Chat in which Sean Wright interviews Kate Forsyth about the research and writing of Bitter Greens. If you've skipped ahead, please back around the 1:53:00 mark -- yes, it's another loooooong podcast -- for some final remarks and listener feedback. Next month is the special Writer and Critic eBook Extravaganza! Ian and Kirstyn will endeavour to read and discuss the following six -- yes, SIX -- originally self-published eBooks as recommended by their listeners: Angelfall by Susan Ee Anticopernicus by Adam Roberts Paintwork by Tim Maughan The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer The Silence of Medair by Andrea K Höst Unlike other books featured on the podcast, Ian and Kirstyn will also be commenting on the format, practical readability and publication standards of these six titles in the context of a broader discussion of e-publishing -- and they have given each other permission to abandon any book they find a struggle for whatever reason. Join them for what should be a most entertaining, engaging and edifying episode!
