Seoul, Korea episode Listener Story Spotlight A friend and a listener named Lois recently went to Hawaii. She told me she spent much time getting travel insurance for herself and her partner. She had to pay more than she expected as her partner was having a birthday between the day she bought the service and the day of the trip. But she said it was well worth it for her peace of mind. The FAQ for today is: Where to find the best travel insurance for a long trip abroad. 1. Start with a neutral comparison engine; you can see this in the show notes. Why use it first? Where to click Smart filters to enable It lets you price 30-day single-trip plans from dozens of underwriters side-by-side, then click through to the policy certificate in one step. Squaremouth (toggle "Comprehensive" or "Medical-only" to see apples-to-apples pricing). Squaremouth Travel Insurance Medical ≥ $100k, Evac≥ $250k, "Cancel for Any Reason" if you want maximum flexibility. Gives you consumer-written claim reviews plus AM Best financial ratings in the results grid. InsureMyTrip (same data feed as Squaremouth but different sort logic). Add "PIf relevant, existing condition waiver" if rek "Adventure sports" if you'll hike or dive. Pulls quotes from some insurers that don't feed aggregators (e.g., Allianz's higher-tier plans) and lists A.M. Best scores. TravelInsurance.com Use the "24/7 assistance" toggle to see which plans outsource helplines. Skeptical check: All three make a commission, and none of them has every carrier. Run your trip through at least two engines and see if the so-called "cheapest" plan is available. 2. Cross-reference with an independent ranking list U.S. News "Best Travel Insurance Companies 2025" ranks plans by coverage and claim-paying history—not advertising spend. It's a fast way to see which names (Travelex, Allianz, Tin Leg, etc.) consistently show up in the top tier. U.S. News 3. See what other solo women say SoloTravelerWorld.com keeps an updated "Best Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers" guide that spells out what to look for if you're traveling alone—single-supplement benefits, harassment coverage, and 24-hour crisis lines. Solo Traveler AbsolutelyLucy.com lays out five red flags that matter disproportionately to women (e.g., personal-assault medical limits, emergency contraception exclusions). Absolutely Lucy Read these before you fall for glossy Instagram ads that treat "female-friendly" as a slogan. 4. Kick the tires on the insurer's site If a plan looks good in a marketplace, open the policy certificate directly on the carrier's website (World Nomads, SafetyWing, Allianz, IMG, etc.). World Nomads publishes unfiltered claim reviews, which help sniff out chronic payout delays. World Nomads 5. Verify what your government will—or won't—do The U.S. State Department's Insurance Coverage Overseas page makes it crystal-clear that Uncle Sam does not pay your hospital bill or med-evac. It also links to the embassy medical resources for every country, which tells you how far the nearest trauma center is from your trekking trail. Travel.gov 6. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delays, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation). How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & Evac first; those two benefits can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you plan to do. Run your final four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. You can purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen, which avoids aggregator change fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less. 60-second confidence challenge 3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. Read reviews on the AirBNB website before you select. When booking a flight or train, be sure it arrives at daylight, which can differ in winter months. If it comes after dark, it will be more challenging. To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my book dives deeper—https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com See Book A for addressing all of these items. Find it on the website or Amazon. It's a series. Today's destination is: South Korea I visited South Korea last month. I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please understand that as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through the eyes of my friend Chris. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested for the night. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong. For example, the Seoul Noryyanglin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies. I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area, too. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong. I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorites for fashion. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, busses, taxis, and Ubers plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9. I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai. and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop. I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists. Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotleok desserts. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong. Recommended: Relax in a tea house. Smart Move and Slip up pairings In Korea, we were departing from the airport without enough money on our transit cards, so we could not enter the building. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue. 60 second confidence challenge Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask. Be confident when you know what the expectations are. Resources Roundup If you are looking for more solo female travel resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls, such as paying the difference on the transit card when you go long distances or knowing when to tip. When you get lost, don't get upset. Get found. You will be better off if you cool down instead of heating your brain incorrectly. Chill, and you'll be found sooner. Dr. Travelbest's tip #760.

Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) sends you cheap flight alerts for free with signup (there is a paid version but I encourage you to just start with the free cheap flight alerts. Ransomware struck global currency exchange and remittance company Travelex on New Year's Eve 2019. Security Architect Don Gibson was DJing at a friend's place when the first alerts came in. That night kicked off turbulent period for Don that lasted throughout the rest of the year. His name became publicly linked with the Travelex incident, and the attention was completely undesired. His story is one of how social media, a frantic incident response and stress contributed to a nearly tragic health outcome. He went from IR, or incident response, to the ER – the hospital's emergency room. We're talking about travel insurance and other forms of travel protection. I can't tell you how many myths abound about this aspect of travel - from thoughts that claims don't get paid anyway, to not fully understanding why it's so important. We insure our cars, our watches, our dog's vet bills - and even though luxury travelers are spending MUCH more on their trips than on these items… they don't all insure. Over the past two years in my business I can't tell you how valuable having travel insurance has been for our clients in the know. So today I'm welcoming Shannon Lofdahl and Ross Thompson, respective CEOs of Travelex and Covac Global. We did our best to illustrate this topic through some interesting stories and historical context. Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn
Hamish Grierson is the CEO and Co-founder of Thriva, a company which offers direct to consumer blood testing — with a broader mission of improving human lifespan. In effect, they're treating people like adults who can take charge of their own health and data. Hamish came from the world of FinTech having headed International Payments and Remittance at Travelex, before co-founding Thriva in 2016. Thriva has raised $14.7 million dollars to date. We talk about democratising access to healthcare testing and whether there should be limits on what tests we offer people, whether just giving people more data is the panacea in improving life and health span and how sometimes — outsiders are best placed to tackle some of the big problems in healthcare. Welcome to the Nucleon Cyber Intelligence podcast. This podcast will give you a summary of the latest news related to cyber intelligence and proactive cyber security in only a few minutes. The podcast is aimed at professionals who are short on time, or for anyone who would like to know a bit more about what is REALLY happening out there in the cyber world. The focus of this podcast will be on the latest cyber events for non-technical people; anyone can listen and understand. https://news.nucleon.sh/2021/09/23/intelligence-briefing-74/ If you have been following the adventures of the hackers group called Revil cyber gang then they have fully returned and are once again attacking new victims and publishing stolen files on a data leak site. If you haven't heard about Revil gang, here is a short recap, Since 2019, the REvil ransomware operation, also known as Sodinokibi, has been conducting attacks on organizations worldwide where they demand million-dollar ransoms to receive a decryption key and prevent the leaking of stolen files. We covered some of their attacks right here on big cases such as JBS, Coop, Travelex and many others. REvil shut down their infrastructure and completely disappeared after their biggest hack yet. A massive attack on July 2nd that encrypted over 50 service providers and over 1,500 businesses using a zero-day vulnerability in the Kaseya VSA remote management platform which had no patch. This attack had such wide-ranging consequences worldwide that it brought the full attention of international law enforcement to bear on the group. Maybe because of the pressure, the REvil gang suddenly shut down all their servers and went offline, leaving many victims in a lurch with no way of decrypting their files. Few days later, Kaseya (the company that have been hacked) received a universal decryptor that victims could use to decrypt files for free. It is unclear how Kaseya received the decryptor but stated it came from a "trusted third party.".... ---- On a different subject, cybersecurity experts warned that cybercriminal forums had in recent months been selling access to login credentials for software that the United Nations uses to manage internal projects. The software could provide valuable access to intruders looking to extort the UN or steal data. The cyber security firm Resecurity contacted UN officials after noticing the login credentials for sale on the dark web. Another Security firm reported to observe one prominent cybercriminal gang claiming access to the UN software. This caused the UN to release an official statement saying: “Unidentified hackers breached computer systems at the United Nations in April and the multinational body has had to fend off related hacks in the months since.” There are different rumors and stories about this incident, so we just thought to briefly mention it here in case this case evolves and we will pay more attention to it in the future. ----- That's it for this podcast, stay safe and see you in the next podcast. Don't forget to visit www.nucleoncyber.com for the latest podcasts on cyber intelligence.

In 2020, Travelex, the world's largest currency dealer at the time, was caught in the middle of a public and devastating cyber extortion campaign. Attackers exploited a vulnerability in the Pulse Connect Secure VPN (which had a patch available) to extract data, for which they demanded payment of a $6 million ransom in exchange for its release. Despite being a large organization, Travelex suffered due to the technological and operational impact of the attack, and ultimately paid their attackers a sum of $2.3 million. This attack led to major financial challenges and loss of credibility for the company, which was ultimately put up for sale in the same year. Cyber extortion has long been a lucrative business for cyber criminals and threat actors. A multi-million-dollar cybercrime industry, cyber extortion has been gaining traction over the past few years, and 2021 doesn't see it slowing down. While it's frequently discussed, we wanted to take a deep dive into cyber extortion and explore its definition, tactics, popular real-world examples and sure-fire ways to protect your organization from this highly ruinous type of cyber crime. Defining cyber extortion "Conventional" cybercriminals typically seek out information, such as financial and personally identifiable information, that they can then sell directly on the black market. When it comes to cyber extortion, the (financial) goal remains the same, but the full picture is a bit different. While the stolen data in our first scenario has a clear (black) market value, cyber extortion involves information with inherent value to its owner. By threatening to release it publicly, render it unusable or simply destroy it, cyber criminals can get the financial reward they're looking for by demanding a ransom to stop the attack. Cyber extortion is one of the fastest growing types of cyber crime in which cyber criminals demand payment or other goods. In doing so, they may threaten malicious activity against the victim that includes data compromise, data theft, release of sensitive data to the public, infecting a device or a network with malware, shutting down systems or executing a denial-of-service attack. Types of cyber extortion There are several ways in which malicious actors can carry out cyber extortion against their targets. In order for cyber extortion to be possible, it needs to begin with malicious actors gaining leverage, getting access to the target's system and data. This can be done through several methods. Cyber criminals can use phishing emails, ad scams, infected websites and the like to target a wide range of victims and act opportunistically, by waiting for someone to take the bait; or they can be targeted, which is the more usual route taken when going against organizations. Cyber extortion can arrive as the consequence of several different cyber risks and threats: Cyber extortion and ransomware In 2020, ransomware attacks have grown by 150%, with the average extortion amount doubling from the year before. Ransomware itself is a type of malware that infects a device or a network, encrypts files on it or denies the owner access, with a demand for ransom in return. Once ransomware is delivered, usually via email attachments, download links or ads, and the device is infected, the files on it are encrypted with a message that states the ransom amount required for the attackers to provide the decryption key. What makes ransomware attacks particularly dangerous is the fact that if you don't pay the ransom, you run a high risk that your files will be deleted forever. And if you do pay the ransom, who can guarantee that the cyber criminals would return your access? They are criminals, after all. Additionally, cyber criminals have a known tactic of asking for small amounts of ransoms and do, in fact, give the decryption keys; they can earn huge profits this way. Not to mention that once you're labeled as a victim who will pay the ransom, chances are likely to increase that you'...

Now you may be forgiven for thinking that this episode is a montage of 3 or 4 of our previous podcasts... but alas, no...We do however visit some old friends like SolarWinds, Travelex and HAFNIUM as they all become topical again following the US/UK sanctions imposed on Russia this week.Of course Russia, 'does not conduct offensive operations in the cyber domain', but we unpick what is being reported anyway, and again arrive at two indubitable facts of cyber-readiness.....
In this episode we study in detail, (apologies, Richard rambled!), the shocking story of the demise of Travelex due in no small part to a highly successful ransomware attack. We cover just how avoidable these incidents are by dealing with those pesky vulnerabilities! And the drinking word this week sounds like you're already half-cut when you say it....Show Notes:Apple - iOS and iPadOS 14.4. - iPhone 6s and later, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and the 7th generation iPod touch. Apple also issued security updates for one of the vulnerabilities across a range of its other offerings, including Apple Watch (watchOS 7.3) and Apple TVs (tvOS 14.4).CVE-2021-1782. Sir Lloyd Dorfman made his name by founding foreign exchange retail giant Travelex, which he set up as a single shop in London in his early 20s. In this week's episode, Sir Lloyd tells Will and Dan about how he built Travelex up from a one-man operation into a company with 1,000 stores across the world. Sir Lloyd is no longer involved in the running of Travelex (having sold down his stake to make hundreds of millions of pounds) but he has remained a prolific investor and businessman, working with companies like the Office Group and Doddle. In 2018, Lloyd – who is a renowned philanthropist as well as a businessman – was knighted to become Sir Lloyd. He ransomware, she ransomware, they all ransomware! Yup, you guessed it: this week's episode is all about ransomware. We start with Garmin's interesting handling of their recent tryst with WastedLocker, which largely involved them saying nothing at all to anyone. Then we move on to Blackbaud, who took the opposite stance by telling everyone everything and promising that absolutely on no account has the breached data gone any further than the cybercriminals responsible. Because criminals are renowned for their honesty, right? Staying on the ransomware theme, we wonder whether Garmin could – or should – have learned lessons from Travelex's new year nightmare and Norsk Hydro's run in with LockerGoga in 2019. We also take a look at app sec with Sean Wright, Mr App Sec himself at Immersive Labs and our guest for this week. Incidentally, Immersive Labs released three new labs on WastedLocker this week, so if you want to learn more about how it works and the part it played in the Garmin hack, https://www.immersivelabs.com/resources/blog/from-decisions-to-decryption-live-the-garmin-ransomware-attack-with-immersive-labs/ (head over to this blog).
