Interview: Fairness with Judge Gabriel Sanchez

On our episode about fairness — "Fairness with Vella Lovell and Meredith Holzman" — three kids (Bodhi, Aubrey, and Will) helped two arguing Qook-a-lackas through a process of “qook-a-lation.” They listened to both sides of the argument, asked some questions, and then shared some ideas to help the Qook-a-lackas find a fair solution.Today, Little Kids, Big Hearts is thrilled to share an interview diving into fairness with someone who knows A LOT about qook-a-lation: Judge Gabriel P. Sanchez, who has served as a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit since 2022.Our host, Todd Loyd chats with Judge Sanchez about what fairness is and moments in his life when he's learned about fairness. He shares tips for little kids with big hearts who want to follow in his footsteps and become real-life judges — and also tips on how we can bring more fairness to our classrooms and playgrounds today. Judge Sanchez was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2022 — an exciting first for our podcast! He's based in San Francisco, but hears cases across California, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Judge Sanchez has had a remarkable career advocating for criminal justice reform, public safety, and civil rights, while also serving as a pro bono supporter of farm workers' rights.

During the most recent adventure of Little Kids, Big Hearts, "Fairness with Vella Lovell and Meredith Holzman," three kids — Bodhi, Aubrey, and Will — travel with LKBH host Todd Loyd to the Land of Qook-a-lackas to help two Qook-a-lacka friends "qook-a-late" to retsore fairness to the Land.Today, we're back with an original story about fairness — "The Qook-a-lackas' Absolutely Exactly Everything Equal Day" — told by our amazing host, Todd Loyd, who is a teacher in New York City who LOVES a good storytime.  In the story, Kix and Kelenor (twin Qook-a-lackas) think everything is unfair. When their parent, Quamira, offers them an Absolutely Exactly Everything Equal Day, they think they're getting what they want...but are they really!? This original story by the team at Little Kids, Big Hearts has an important lesson about what fairness is...and what it is not.  We are excited to share this original fictional story with you! Find fairness resources from LKBH online at: https://playsparkler.org/fairness/

Things have been a little tough in Los Angeles this month, so we are bringing you our first ever Dead Pilots Society Rerun. This is one of our all-time favorite episodes. From way back in 2020, it's Eternally Yours from Joe Port & Joe Wiseman (Ghosts, The Office, New Girl), about a family of normal looking but emotionally closed off, stuck-together-for-eternity vampires. If you think there's no fresh spins left in the vampire genre, you need to listen to this one.  Eternally Yours was recorded live at The Improv in Hollywood and stars Ed Weeks as Charles, Briga Heelan as Liz, Asif Ali as Max, Vella Lovell as Emma, Tony Cavalero as Jesse, Yassir Lester as Benji, Matt Walsh as Mort/Sigmund Freud, Mindy Sterling as Phyllis/Woman/Kristen Stewart, Brendan Scannell as Steve The Blood Guy/Man, David Fumero as Henry, and Andrew Reich with stage directions.

Today, we're back to challenge our listeners to go on their own FAIRNESS QUEST, inspired by the episode and the words/actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — whose legacy of justice, equality, and human rights we celebrated this week. Todd and LKBH Producer Christy Pusz Decatur issue our first-ever challenge our listeners to (1) notice something that seems unfair, (2) think about ways to help, and then (3) take action to help someone else feel included, valued, or supported. This is our first-ever challenge episode, and we'd be overjoyed if our listeners could take a moment to share how their families interpreted the fairness quest with a few words or a picture! You can share on instagram (@little_kids_big_hearts_podcast), facebook (@LittleKidsBigHeartsPodcast), or just email us: podcast@playsparkler.org.  Following the MISSION, turn up the volume and sing/dance along to a brand-new Little Kids, Big Hearts original song: When Something's Unfair. It's written by amazing educator/composer Benjamin Weiner and performed with Benjamin PLUS Vella Lovell, who played Principal Quella in our fairness episode. Vella currently appears on the Fox comedy Animal Control alongside Joel McHale as “Emily.” Other credits include Mr. Mayor, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Accused, A Clüsterfünke Christmas, She Ra And the Princesses of Power, Kiff, The Big Sick, Dollface, Girls, Younger, Grace and Frankie, As We See It, Your Place or Mine. Fairness has played a pivotal role throughout history, with the pursuit of equality and justice helping to shape the world that we live in today. Fairness also plays out in our everyday lives and in the lives of children as they grapple with real-life moments that feel “unfair.” "Fairness" in the context of social and emotional development refers to a child's growing ability to treat others equitably and considering the needs and perspectives of others. The idea of “fairness” pops up in things like taking turns, sharing, and making decisions. In this episode, three 6-8 year old children, Bodhi, Aubrey, and Will, visit with LKBH host Todd Loyd to talk about fairness. They then travel to the Land of Qook-a-lackas to help two Qook-a-lacka friends — Principal Quella and Korrik, the President of the Qook-a-berry Preservation Society — to restore fairness to the Land through a process of “qook-a-lation.” The kids listen to both sides of a conflict, ask questions, and then suggest fair solutions. Our guest stars on this episode are Vella Lovell, who plays the role of Principal Quella and Meredith Holzman, who plays the role of the President of the Qook-a-berry Preservation Society, Korrik. Sound design and mixing is by Ryan Marth, and the ukulele music you hear is by actor and composer Bill English. Please learn more about the episode online at playsparkler.org.

Talking points that the hosts bring up on this episode include the series being cringey in a good way, the uneven arc of Aaron Eckhart's career, and doing away with unnecessary social customs like the one where people say “can I ask you a question?” before asking the question itself. Here’s the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, and Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including Disney+'s Marvel Legends; BBC America's The Watch & Doctor Who; and Season 1 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh discuss the surprising news that Roku has purchased the rights to 75 Quibi originals to air on their ad-supported streaming platform, The Roku Channel, later this year, check out Roku's statement for more. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, and Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Bill & Josh decide Netflix won the month with their splashy debut of the Shonda Rhimes period soap Bridgerton and their big announcement of all the movies that are headed to their service this year. Meanwhile, Alex went a different direction, handing the prize to HBO Max for the way they owned the holiday season with the most talked about film (Wonder Woman 1984) and TV series (The Flight Attendant). Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Josh watched Mr. Mayor, the latest from 30 Rock's Tina Fey & Robert Carlock so you don't have to. They found the cast to be tremendously talented, though better served in past projects (check out Vella Lovell in this excellent musical number from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to see what we mean), the writing to be pretty stale, and the premise to be tone deaf at best. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week, actress Vella Lovell (Crazy Ex- Girlfriend, The Big Sick) is back on The Stacks. This week we're talking about New Boy by Tracy Chevalier. New Boy is part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series, in which modern day authors retell Shakespeare's classic works. New Boy is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, set in a 1970's elementary school in Washington D.C. We talk about this book in comparison to its source material, where Chevalier's book wins and where it misses. Just like Othello itself, this episode covers a lot of subjects, from racism and sexism, to what makes a good adaptation of Shakespeare? While we do discuss New Boy in detail, we don't really spoil the book if you're familiar with Othello. If you don't know Othello then there may be spoilers for you. Listen at your own risk. For two seasons of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, Vella's character Heather has been the fan favorite/standout comic relief alongside Golden Globe Winner Rachel Bloom.   When season three returns fans will be in shock when they see Heather, the underachieving roommate of Rebecca (Bloom), change her tune and make big steps in both her professional and personal life.   Vella was most recently seen in the summer smash hit THE BIG SICK, where she played Khadija, who Kumail's (Kumail Nanjiani) parents are trying to set him up with. Continuing on the film side of things, Vella will also star alongside Justin Long and Cobie Smothers in the comedy LITERALLY, RIGHT BEFORE AARON. In addition, she will have a supporting role alongside Molly Ringwald, Brian d'Arcy James and Jemima Kirke in the independent film ALL THESE SMALL MOMENTS which is set for release in early 2018. In between shooting, Vella is writing/producing a web series with friends called “Friend Therapy,” which will be coming out later this year through Meetinghouse Productions. She is also part of an all-female sketch group called “Razor Burn” where they release video sketches. Unlike her character on the series, Vella is no underachiever. She is a graduate of both NYU's Tisch School and the Juilliard School for Drama. While at Julliard, she played Anna Mae in Pulitzer Prize Winner Lynn Nottage's “By The Way, Meet Vera Stark.”

Plus, we answer your questions, award our Giant Pretzels of the week and give our self-care recommendations for staying healthy and decidedly un-Bunch-like. SONGS: JAP Battle (Rachel Bloom, Steven M.
