The No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers (8-2) nearly overcame a 19-point deficit against the No. 10 Arizona Wildcats on Saturday night, but it was too little, too late for the Hoosiers as they fell to the Wildcats 89-75 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Wildcats were led by star forward Azuolas Tubelis who scored 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting and added seven rebounds in 27 minutes. The Hoosiers were led by senior point guard Xavier Johnson's 11-point, 11-assist double-double in 26 minutes. Sixth-year forward Race Thompson splashed four 3-pointers to aid in his team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Nate Dickinson brings Jacob Rude on to recap the second loss in the last two weeks for Indiana to start off Locked On Big 10.In other Big Ten action, The Penn State Nittany Lions (7-3, 1-1 Big Ten) notched their first road Big Ten win against a top-20 team since beating No. 16 Michigan State in 2020 with a 74-59 win over No. 17 Illinois (7-3, 0-2 Big Ten) on Saturday. Andrew Funk and Myles Dread combined for 11 3-pointers to lead the Nittany Lions to victory. Funk and Jalen Pickett led all scorers with 20 points each, Seth Lundy added 16 and Dread had 15. Funk and Dread have each made at least five 3s in a game this season, with the first time being in a two-point loss to Virginia Tech in November. The No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers (8-2) nearly overcame a 19-point deficit against the No. 10 Arizona Wildcats on Saturday night, but it was too little, too late for the Hoosiers as they fell to the Wildcats 89-75 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Wildcats were led by star forward Azuolas Tubelis who scored 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting and added seven rebounds in 27 minutes. The Hoosiers were led by senior point guard Xavier Johnson's 11-point, 11-assist double-double in 26 minutes. Sixth-year forward Race Thompson splashed four 3-pointers to aid in his team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Andrew Funk and Myles Dread combined for 11 3-pointers to lead the Nittany Lions to victory. Funk and Jalen Pickett led all scorers with 20 points each, Seth Lundy added 16 and Dread had 15. Penn State shot 50% from long distance overall and hit 6 of 9 3s in the first half. Funk and Dread have each made at least five 3s in a game this season, with the first time being in a two-point loss to Virginia Tech in November. The team's four World Cup matches averaged 12.2 million viewers on Fox but its 27 games on rated English-language networks from the start of 2020 through this fall averaged 668,000. That is according to Nielsen. The U.S. team averaged 2.45 million during the World Cup on Telemundo. That is double its 1.02 million average for 40 matches on Spanish-language networks during the three years ahead of the tournament. NCAAMBKB – Men's College Basketball Last Night Michigan State 67, Penn State 58 Notre Dame 81, Boston University 75 Robert Morris 71, Central Michigan 66 Illinois State 87, Eastern Michigan 81 Michigan State 67, Penn State 58 – Hoggard scores career-high 23, Michigan St snaps 2-game skid A.J. Hoggard scored a career-high 23 points, Joey Hauser had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Michigan State beat Penn State 67-58 to snap a two-game losing streak. Michigan State avoided going .500 or worse after 10 games for the first time in 18 seasons. Hoggard blocked an open layup with less than a minute to play and Hauser grabbed the rebound before being fouled and making two free throws at the other end for a 66-58 lead. Hoggard, Hauser and Tyson Walker combined for 31 of Michigan State's 32 second-half points. The Michigan State defense allowed only one made field goal in the final five minutes. Penn State was just 1 of 9 from 3-point range in the second half after 7 of 18 before halftime. Notre Dame 81, Boston U. 75 – Ryan scores 21 to help Notre Dame hold off Boston University Cormac Ryan scored 21 points, including five free throws down the stretch, and Notre Dame held off Boston University 81-75. Ryan continued his hot 3-point shooting, making all four of his attempts. In his last three games, Ryan is 14 of 19 from the arc. Trey Wertz added three more treys and had 16 points with JJ Starling adding 15 for Notre Dame, which shot 49% and was even better from 3-point range at 9 of 17 for 53%. Ethan Brittain-Watts made 5 of 10 3-point tries and scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Terriers. He is expected to have surgery next month. Llewellyn was hurt in a loss to Kentucky in London over the weekend. Llewellyn transferred to Michigan from Princeton last spring and that seemed to lead to Frankie Collins transferring to Arizona State. Llewellyn averaged seven points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in eight games at Michigan. He was an All-Ivy League player last season and averaged nearly 16 points over three seasons at Princeton. No other details were immediately available. The game was supposed to be played at Lafayette in Easton, Pennsylvania. The schools say they are looking at whether the game can be rescheduled. The Fighting Irish are still supposed to host Merrimack on Saturday. That’s just two days after the Rams claimed the former No. 1 draft pick off waivers from Carolina. McVay wouldn't rule out the possibility of Mayfield playing against Las Vegas, but the Rams coach indicated it likely would happen only if John Wolford's persistent neck injury forces struggling Los Angeles to try a desperate solution to its quarterback woes. Zach LaVine added 25 points as Chicago bounced back after a 2-4 road trip. Vucevic's basket gave the Bulls a 106-105 lead with 2:50 left, and he then blocked a shot that led to a jumper by DeRozan. After Porzingis missed a 3-pointer, DeRozan had a three-point play to put Chicago ahead 111-105 with 1:43 left. MLB – AP source: Aaron Judge, Yankees reach $360M, 9-year deal A person familiar with the deal says that Aaron Judge has agreed to return to the New York Yankees on a $360 million, nine-year contract. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. It’s the largest free agent deal in baseball history. Judge will earn $40 million per season, the highest average annual payout for a position player. The contract trails only Mike Trout's $426.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels and Mookie Betts' $365 million pact with the Dodgers for biggest in baseball history. MLB – Braves acquire former All-Star reliever Jiménez from Tigers The Atlanta Braves have traded for former All-Star reliever Joe Jiménez, sending two minor leaguers to Detroit to help restock a bullpen now minus Kenley Jansen. The Tigers acquired outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and left-hander Jake Higginbotham. The swap at the winter meetings on Wednesday night came after Jansen, who led the NL with 41 saves last season, left the NL East champion Braves and got a $32 million, two-year deal with the Boston Red Sox. Jiménez, who turns 28 next month, was 3-2 with two saves and a 3.49 ERA in 62 games with the Tigers last season, striking out 77 in 56 2/3 innings. The right-hander has spent all six of his seasons in the majors with Detroit and was an All-Star in 2018. MLB – AP source: Cardinals, Contreras agree to 5-year contract Willson Contreras is going to St. Louis to replace Yadier Molina at catcher, agreeing to an $87.5 million, five-year contract with the Cardinals. A person familiar with the negotiations confirmed the move to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. The addition of Contreras fills a major void for St. Louis, which won the NL Central this season with a 93-69 record. Molina decided to retire after spending his entire 19-year career with the Cardinals, making 10 All-Star teams and winning nine Gold Gloves.
