Welcome to the Season 6 Premiere of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! We kick off the new season with a fantastic interview with Production Designer and Beth collaborator, Michael Fitzgerald. From his teenage days interning at Shakespeare Santa Cruz to his collaborations with Beth on Rare Objects and Starz's Run The World and, to most recently, working on Disney's fantastic 2024 film, Out of My Mind, Michael has seemingly done it all in the business. We are so lucky for him to bring us his love of production design and his boundless passion and creativity. A must listen to episode to begin the new season!   The Interview with Michael begins at Time Code: 6:06 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities.   Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. Michael Silver and I talk about how he got to be so good a driver in a short period of time – less than a year. And it’s not just seat time, but how he applied the seat time that made the difference, as he shares here. Oh, and we also talk about astronauts and how Michael communicated with them in space, as well as his incredibly varied background. Michael started track driving less than a year ago, and to say he’s become addicted to it is an understatement - he’s had about 40 days on track since he began! With a background – education and experience – in computer science, human factors, linguistics, genetics, music, molecular biology, color science, photography, business, and teaching, he brings an interesting perspective to learning how to be an even better driver. Michael has worked for Apple (where he developed the technology for astronauts to email from space); wrote and directed music for Shakespeare Santa Cruz; was made an honorary Air Force Captain; hung out with Carlos Santana and Keith Richards (after helping set up their studios); been a disc jockey for a large classical music station; and he and his wife, Claire, founded Audio High to help raise money for a number of charities and eventually went on to found a separate non-profit organization (Silver Linings). Pretty boring stuff, right? Michael’s main business is Audio High (AudioHigh.com), and you can contact him by email at Michael@audiohigh.com. And you’re bound to run into him at a track, somewhere, sometime. And be sure to check out "Ask Ross" at SpeedSecrets.com/Ask-Ross/, and email your questions to me.

On the Needles: Gigi is having some focus issues, due to exhaustion.  There was a "Small Wings" sock incident. Jasmin's "pre-bed" knitting is a little more complicated- a Monkey sock (out of Regia silk) and a Hedera (Koigu) are on her nightstand. Jasmin has finished her Tour de Fleece spinning (the Berry Patch colorway, Judy's Novelty Yarns). There is a total of 24 oz spun and plied. Listen for the method! This may become a Ribbi Cardi (for the 2008 Knitting Olympics). Gigi is still working her way through the Little Box of Socks. She's hoping to knit herself a pair of Roman Rib socks. Jasmin has been sticking to The Agreement with Tika, and has finished two pairs of socks. The first is her "She's Like a Rainbow" Socks (handspun by Jasmin from Crown Mountain Farms). She's also finished the Regia Silk socks (colorway 0190). Gigi has restarted her Nicky Epstein Felted Rose Trellis Bag after ripping it out 8 or 10 times. To buy wonderful silk fabric, try Thai Silks in Los Altos. We want to use the silk to line our Philsopher's Wool sweaters. Jasmin is on a starting binge. She's just cast on some handspun yarn (roving from Girl on the Rocks, colorway "Sirius"). Gigi has wound her yarn for her Basic Chic Pulli (that's her Knitting Olympics project). Jasmin is also knitting a pair of socks out of Dream in Color Smooshy (color, Butter Peeps), a pair out of Lisa Souza's Hardtwist merino (color, Blueflame), some Creatively Dyed Yarns "Ocean" (color # 533), and some Tess Yarns' Peruvian Sock (color, Peach Melba). All of this is for review, later. Review: Jasmin attended Shakespeare Santa Cruz's production of Romeo and Juliet.  It was SUPER GOOD!  The balcony scene made Jasmin feel 14 years old again. You should go to their shows- they cast pretty and hunky people. Stitch and Pitch: Jasmin and Andrew went up with the Purlescence crowd, ate junk food, and had a pretty good time. When Knitting Attacks: Jasmin's handspun "Ain't no mountain high enough" handspun (roving from Crown Mountain Farms) is terribly overspun and over-Navajo Plied. Terribly, tragically overspun and overplied. She's ripping it out and getting rid of the yarn. Gigi is working on her "Perfect T" sweater, but her sleeves aren't quite working out. Mother Knows Best: Gigi will make a paper pattern with the dimensions before knitting another sweater to ensure proper fit. To deal with yarn that has been frogged, re-skein the yarn, soak it in warm-ish water for 15 minutes, and hang it to dry with a tiny bit of weight suspended off of it. Too much weight will damage the yarn, so be careful. Events: Friday, August 1st- All's Well that Ends Well, at Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Come KIP with us with culture! Sunday, August 17th- Monterey Wool Auction Friday, August 22nd- Burn This- Shakespeare Santa Cruz.
